Lu Xun’s real name is Zhou Shuren. He was born on September 25th, 1881. This year is the 140th anniversary of his birth. People still remember and talk about this great writer.
Pick up the pen
Lu Xun once dreamed of being a doctor. He went to study in a Japanese college. However, in the early 20th century, Lu Xun found that there were many problems in Chinese society. A warrior-writer
Some people said Lu’s words are like weapons(武器). Famous writer Lin Yutang called him a “warrior”. His works show the dark side of society and tradition in a special way. For example, in the story A Madman’s Diary, the madman sees a “man-eating” society. Then another story, Kong Yiji, is about a man who fails the imperial exam(科举) again and again. The story shows that this kind of exam needs change. “Reading one story by him is more useful than reading many by others. His care for society and his sharp words are so different,” a reader under the name of Mian told The Paper.
A changer of writing
Lu Xun is called the “Father of Modern Chinese Literature(中国现代文学之父)”. He wrote A Madman’s Diary in spoken language. It is a first in modern works. Before this, people wrote in wenyanwen. Wenyanwen is hard to read for someone without training. Lu Xun’s writings opened a new page for modern literature. More writers followed him to write in spoken language.

When a virus changes, it becomes a “variant(变种)”. The World Health Organization (WHO) names and grades COVID-19 variants for the problems they may cause. The Delta variant is now common around the world. Now, there’s a new variant and it’s causing new problems.
The variant, named Omicron(奥密克戎), was first found in South Africa on November 9th. Omicron can make people sick more easily. Our antibodies(抗体) are not so good at stopping it, reported Newsweek.
The WHO has warned that Omicron can put the world at “very high” risk and is likely to spread all over the world. Over the past weeks, countries including Belgium, the UK and Italy have also reported their first cases of the Omicron variant.
Will the current vaccines(疫苗) protect people against the new strain of virus? Although not much is known about the variant, many people who already recovered from COVID-19 can still catch Omicron, said the WHO. Vaccinations have already started in some parts of the world. However, the effects don’t meet the requirement. According to CGTV, vaccine makers are working to upgrade(升级) their COVID-19 vaccines against Omicron.
Governments around the world moved fast to keep out the new variant. On November 26th, the US brought out travel restrictions(限制) to eight African countries including South Africa and Zimbabwe. On June 2nd, 2021, the Chinese powerful telecom company Huawei announced Harmony OS for phones came out. From then on, someone who uses Huawei phones can use Harmony OS.
Harmony OS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, is an open-source operating system for phones and other devices(设备). As China’s first self-developed operating system, it was used first for Huawei’s wearable devices, such as watches, in August, 2019. Huawei’s wearable devices are mainly designed for different groups of people with different kinds of functions.
The recent launch for smart phones is part of the company’s effort to improve its software products. China Daily said the move is a big step for Huawei, which has been preparing to change from Google’s Android for a long time.
“Harmony’s development for smart phones will surely be a serious rival(对手) to Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS.” Bradly Blan kenship wrote for CGTN.
Huawei expects the number of devices using Harmony OS to reach 300 million by the end of 2021, including more than 200 million for Huawei devices. Wang Chenglu, president of software department at Huawei’s consumer business group, said, “The goal was to have 300 million devices running Harmony OS in 2021”.
“Now, we have hundreds of millions of Huawei mobile phone users. If they change their smart phone systems to Harmony OS and feel that the experience is good, they will stay with our products.” Wang told China Daily.
Harmony OS is designed for IOT(物联网) time. It can connect all kinds of IOT devices. It is convenient to develop apps based on Harmony OS, said Yin Dong, a Beijing-based software developer.
“Unlike Android, which is firstly designed only for smart phones, Harmony OS is for lots of devices, including watches, TVs, cars and even ovens, which enables them to easily connect with each other and deliver new functions.” Yin said.
