A Narrow Escape
A feeling of terror came over ten-year-old Chet Roscow. He had been swimming in the A Narrow Escape
Matawan River by himself. But he had the idea that someone or something was watching him.
And then he saw a large gray fin(鳍)slicing through the water like a knife. What was that? Could it be a shark? That was impossible! Elm Hills was miles and miles from the ocean. How could a shark find its way into this little river?
But now Chet could see it coming toward him.The shark was bigger than Chet himself. The black eyes staring up through the water-killer eyes.
Chet dived toward the shore, pounding through the water and kicking with all his might. His feet touched the bottom. He was running now, looking over his shoulder. The shark was right behind him, its huge jaws wide open and its white teeth shining in its blooded mouth. Those killer eyes stared at Chet. And then, with a flick of its tail, the shark pushed itself backward into the water, and disappeared down the river.
Chet rose to his knees and threw up. When he could stand, he suddenly noticed his fiends,Sid,Monty and Dewey, standing on the dock(码头).Before he could stop them, they had dived into the water.
"Get out of the water!"he screamed."Get out! Get out now!"
He thundered down the path and onto the dock."You have to get out! There's a shark!"
"You hear that,Monty?" Sid said."There's a shark in the river! We'd better get out."
Sid lifted himself up on the dock and took a running leap off the edge of the dock.He jumped into the river with such an enormous splash that Chet got thoroughly wet. Monty and Dewey dived in after him.
"Oh shaaaaaaa-rrrrrrrk!"Sid called through cupped hands."Here, shark! Come and get us!"

As soon as his workday ended, Jordan rushed out of the office. He drove his car to the nearest supermarket to prepare for his mother’s surprise birthday party that evening. Unfortunately for Jordan, it was Friday and the parking lot was packed with shoppers. He had to drive around looking for a space to park.
After nearly 20 minutes, he noticed a space, but that was specially used for unloading goods. He hesitated for a while, but thinking shopping would take him just a few minutes, he parked his car there and rushed into the supermarket. He hurried down the aisles (过道), checking the shopping list his sister had messaged him. Soon Jordan had almost everything. Now he just needed to pick out a birthday cake.
“Just a few minutes more, ” he repeated these words in his mind several times as he sped down the target aisle. But when he got there, there was a long line of people wanting to buy cakes or cookies. He was getting more and more anxious, and began to regret not ordering a cake the day before.
Half an hour later, it was finally his turn. He asked for a chocolate cake, and carefully placed it in the cart. Now he could go! Jordan raced towards the nearest till (收款处).“Oh, I really have good luck!” he thought. “There’s no one there! ” However, out of the corner of his eye, he saw someone approaching the till ahead of him.

“Be sure to hang the decorations high,” said Polly, my stepmom. “Jake might mistake the colorful glass balls for his toys and try to bite them,” Jake was new to our family that Christmas. He was a beautiful brown-and-white dog. And, of course, he was loaded with the curiosity that made everything a toy.
Two weeks before Christmas, we brought out the boxes of decorations, many of which had been in Polly’s family for ages. Among them was a special box that held an entire gingerbread family (姜饼人). They were real cookies, hung with red ribbons (丝带) and made many years earlier.
Every now and then, I or one of my little sisters—Ruth and Sue—would pretend we were going to eat one, knowing that Polly would say, “You’ll break a tooth! They’re so old that they’re rock-hard.” We didn’t really want to eat them, but we enjoyed making fun of Polly.
Since we didn’t know how Jake would react to the decorations or the Christmas tree, we were careful to put the decorations up high. Jake sniffed (嗅) the tree a lot. Those first couple of days, Polly caught him starting to lift a leg on the tree twice. But he learned quickly and settled for sniffing from a distance.
The weekend before Christmas, Dad and Polly took us to watch the new holiday movie. Excited, we jumped into the car with bags of home-made popcorn, and off we went for a great evening.
A few hours later, we returned home, only to find...a terrible mess. It wasn’t the Christmas tree. In fact, we weren’t sure what it was. We stood just inside the door staring at the mess. As it turned out, it was Jake’s bed, which he’d destroyed. Left alone for the first time, he must have gotten bored, attacked it and left it for dead. We didn’t know that the bed was not the only victim.

The watch was my grandfather’s. He hung it by his bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numbers and the case was gold. My grandfather got it after his fifty years of faithful service with his firm. I often gazed at it longingly as I sat with my grandfather after school.
The day I told him of my success in the examinations, he was pleased,“You’ll be going to the new school next, Will. Remember you’ll need plenty of patience. That’s the right way.” I nodded when handing him the watch. He gazed at it for some moments, and wound it.
The next morning my mother told me he had died in his sleep and left me his watch. For safety, my mother was to put it away in trust until she considered me old enough to look after it. I protested(抗议) so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it in the kitchen where I could always see it.
The summer soon ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily, and for a time I did little more than get on speaking terms with some boys. One of them was a rich fellow whose way of impressing us was to parade his possessions before us. Everything Crawley had was better than ours – until he brought the watch.
“I have a better watch than that,” I announced, attempting to impress them. “Well, show it to us,” Crawley sneered (冷笑) in disbelief. Embarrassed, I promised to bring it to them that afternoon.
Considering there was no way to persuade my mother to let me take the watch, I decided to wait for her to step outside and slip the watch into my pocket. So I did. After lunch, as I was too excited to wait for the return bus, I got my bike out of the shed.
I rode fast, excitement coursing through me. Then suddenly a puppy ran out into my path. I pulled at my brakes so hard that the bike stopped to a sharp standstill (急停) and I fell over.

Joe was an old man aged 75. He lived happily in a beautiful family. His children grew up and moved to different cities in pursue of good career and future. He lived in a small village carrying the memories of his deceased wife.
Joe had four grandchildren. They used to visit him during their holidays. It was now their vacation time and Joe was eagerly waiting for their arrival. He prepared his home for the kids, cleaning the house, mowing the garden, and buying their favourite foods and dresses.
In the busy arrangements, he lost his watch. The watch was gifted by his dead wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch. After his wife’s death, it became his sole companion with its ‘tick, tick’ sound throughout the silent night.

It was a gift from your grandma. I lost it while cleaning the house! I feel like I’m missing my heart.” The children tried to comfort him. One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last time before it was missing?”
Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn!”

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

Mai Lin wasn’t doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn’t satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
“Let’s review the material we learned in the last unit,” the history teacher said. “Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812?” Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn’t call her name. They hadn’t studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn’t know the answer.
“Alison?” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school – always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn’t made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher’s question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she’d be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, “Everybody! Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi. Once, I was called at 3 a.m. to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for one light in a window. Often, many drivers would just honk ( 按喇叭) once or twice, wait a short minute, then drive away.
But unless a real danger, I always went to the door to find the passenger. It might be someone
who needed my assistance. Would I not want a driver to do the same if my mother or father had called for a taxi?
So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a weak and elderly voice. I could hear the sound of something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase. “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. “I’d like a few moments alone. Then, if you could come back and help me? I’m not very strong.”
I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm, and we walked slowly toward the cab. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered. “I don’t mind,” she said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to the nursing home.” I saw her eyes shining with tears. “I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I am too old to live alone.”
I quietly turned off the meter (计程器). “What road do you want me to take?” I asked. “First, take me to Sunrise Street. That’s where I was born.”

As 17-year-old Torriell Norwood drove through St. Peters-burg, Florida last February with her friends to pay a visit to the great park as scheduled. Norwood shared her first aid courses and her dream of becoming a doctor and other girls shared their precious experiences about the natural adventures with each other. The laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to screams. As they approached an intersection, another car T-boned them, sending their black car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree. All of them were in panic instantly, totally at a loss!
As smoke waved from the car, a bystander shouted, “It’s about to blow up! Get out!” The impact had caved in Norwood’s driver’s side door, jamming it shut. The bystander seized the front door handle of the car, summoned all his strength to pull it open but failed. Shaken, but otherwise OK, Norwood crawled out through the window. She had a cut on the right side of her face. Originally her lovely face became very pale. Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life.
But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, Azarria Simmons, was not with them. Norwood ran back to the wreck and found Simmons slumped in the back seat. “She was not moving,” Norwood shouted with her heart tightened. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out, avoiding the broken glass as best she could. She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. She checked her pulse. Nothing! She put her head against Simmons’s chest. No sign of life!

18-year-old Sadiya was born in Deora, a small village in eastern India, but moved to the city of Mumbai when she was 3.In 2020, when the pandemic(疫情)broke out, her father’s small business was forced to close temporarily and the family returned to her ancestral village to wait out the pandemic.
However, it greatly shocked her when she found that attending school was uncommon in Deora, where almost half of the villagers couldn’t read. Unable to afford textbooks, many families often withdrew their children from schools. They didn’t wish to educate their children, many of whom had to work in the fields with parents though some had the desire to read.
Sadiya, the college girl with a strong sense of social responsibility, has been trying to seize opportunities to open doors for others. Fluent in Hindi, Urdu, and English, she often speaks at inter-college events on the right to education and enjoys a high reputation among college students.
Used to taking on challenges, Sadiya was determined to do something for the children. One day last July, Sadiya sat down with her family elders and proposed the idea of setting up a library”. Many shook their heads in disagreement—this wasn’t how a young girl should spend her time.
After many discussions, Sadiya finally convinced them and gained access to her relative’s guesthouse, mending it with $67 that she’d won in public-speaking awards. She took the help of her uncle, Akbar, and cousin, Nawaz, and got to work. Walls were repainted, the bamboo roof was repaired and lights and bookshelves were fixed, and the room was filled with chairs and a long table.Vivid charts stuck on the walls—from anatomy(解剖)to transportation, lightened the space. Looking at the newly-decorated“library”, Sadiya couldn’t hold back her excitement while imagining the children reading books here by light.
All was ready except books. So what Sadiya was desperate to do next was fill the shelves with books. She drew on all her savings and purchased many books suitable for children online.

Nothing Extraordinary
It was a Saturday. The mall was packed with people. I was with my mom.
Mom is short, skinny. It is easy to overlook her in a crowd simply because she is nothing extraordinary to see.
On that day we went for another window shopping in a mall next to our apartment, peeking at window boutiques(时装店)in fleeting glances because we both knew we wouldn’t be buying much, like always.
I remember I was looking up at the people we passed as we walked—at first indifferently, but then more attentively.
Ladies wore bright, delicate clothing and five-inch heels that clicked importantly on the floor. Men stepped by smelling of sharp perfumes. An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. I tried to push it out, but once it took root, it refused to be rid of and tossed away: I was ashamed of my mother.
We were in a high-class neighborhood, I knew that. We lived in a small, overpriced apartment building that Mom chose to move to because she knew the schools were good.
We were in a high-class neighborhood, but as I examined the passers-by and then turned accusing eyes on Mom, I realized for the first time that we didn’t belong there.
I could see the heavy lines around Mom’s eyes and mouth, carved deep into her skin without luxurious creams to ease them away. She wore cheap, ragged clothes with the seams tom, shoes with the soles(鞋底)worn down. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make ends meet and her hair was too gray for her age.
My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment she stood out because she was just so plain.
I don’t want to be seen with her, so I hurried away to the bathroom. When I finally made my way out with reluctant steps, Mom wasn’t in sight. I had to search door to door, only to find Mom was standing in the middle of a high-end store, holding a sweater that looked much too expensive.

My wife called, "Will you come here and make your darling daughter eat her food?"
I threw the newspaper away and rushed to the scene. My only daughter looked frightened. Tears were welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a bowl filled with curd rice whichshe particularly hated. But my mother and my wife believed firmly that curd rice is beneficialto health. I cleared my throat, and picked up the bowl. "Dina, why don't you take a fewmouthfuls? Just for Dad's sake, dear." Dina softened a bit, and wiped her tears with the backof her hands. "OK, Dad. I will eat not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot. But, youshould…" She hesitated. "Dad, if I eat this entire curd rice, will you give me whatever I askfor?" "Oh sure, darling,"! I replied. "Promise."
My girl stared at her mom and continued, "Ask Mom also to give a promise." My wifeput her hand on Dina's and said, "Promise.”
"Dear, you still want a new computer? Dad doesn't have that kind of money right now. OK?" I became a bit anxious.
“No, Dad. I don't want anything expensive." Slowly and painfully, she finished eatingthe rice. Dina came to me with her eyes wide with expectation. All our attention was on her. She demanded, "Dad, I want to have my head shaved off this Sunday!" My wife shouted, "Agirl having her head shaved off? Impossible!"
"Dina, can you ask for something else? Seeing you with a clean-shaven head, we'll besad," I said. But Dina said, "No, Dad. I don't want anything else. You promised to rewardme with whatever I ask for. Now, you are going back on your words. Keeping up seemed so important when I was a teenager. Back in 1973, if you weren't wearing Penn Loafers(乐福鞋) you'd just as soon go around in your bare feet. There was only one problem that year, I had bought Oxfords—but Penny Loafers were in.
“I need some money for Penny Loafers,” I told my dad one afternoon at the place where he worked as a car mechanic.
Dad looked at me for a full minute before he answered, “Wear those shoes one more day. Look at every pair of shoes you see at school. If you can tell me that you are worse off than the other kids, I'll buy new shoes for you.”
The next day, I did what Dad said. I saw many schoolmates wore torn shoes of the likes I'd never had to wear, and shoes with holes in them, but I had no intention of telling him the results.
When school was out, I rushed to the place where Dad worked. It was quiet. Only an occasional clank(叮当声) of metal could be heard as Dad worked under a car. Then dad's shoes came into my sight. They were old and black, the kind mechanics and service-station attendants wore. I saw the mended soles(鞋底) and the spliced laces(拼接的鞋带).
“You do what I told you today?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Well, what do you want to do?” He looked as though he might know what my answer would be.
“I still want the Penny Loafers.” I forced myself not to look at his shoes.
Dad handed me ten dollars. I took the money and went to the store two blocks down the street. A rack(货架) on a far wall appeared as if it had a million pairs of black Penny Loafers resting on it. On a rack next to it was a sign that reads “CLEARANCE 50% OFF”. Below the sign sat several “young” versions of Dad's shoes.
