Take back control
There are times in life when nothing seems to go to plan. The trip you were looking forward to is called off, your house sale falls through, and you haven't exercised in three weeks. All of these things have happened to me and, on occasion, at the same time.____35____ Either that, or you end up giving up and feeling like your life is always going to be full of problems.
So, how do you keep your calm in testing times, but also hold it together for long enough to pull yourself out? Contrary to what you may think, I'm a believer in giving in to how you're feeling, at least for a moment.____36____
But how do you turn things around? The first thing I do is write everything down. I draw a line down the middle of a page. On the left, I write down all the things that are stressing me out. On the right, I write down everything that needs to be done to fix these problems. Then, I look at the list and I cross out all the points over which I have no control.____37____ Next, I write down the possible actions against each point on the list. Finally, I force myself into taking action by picking up the phone and asking someone for help;____38____ After all, a problem shared is a problem halved.
In my experience, the easiest way to keep calm is to regain control of your situation. When we feel out of control, we fall into a downward cycle, and taking back control stops this.
____39____ Finally, I remind myself of an age-old truth: this too shall pass.
A. I focus on the things that I can do something about.
B. We can think and worry about many things at the same time.
C. And the moment we start doing, we move away from thinking.
D. I always find that this simple act makes me fix things quicker.
E. The truth is, it's hard not to lose control of yourself in these moments.
F. Better to fall into it, accept the situation for what it is, then get back on your feet and go again.
G. No matter how bad things are, keeping your calm will always help you find a better outcome.
E 36. F 37. A 38. D 39. G
【35题详解】根据上文“There are times in life when nothing seems to go to plan. The trip you were looking forward to is called off, your house sale falls through, and you haven't exercised in three weeks. All of these things have happened to me and, on occasion, at the same time. (生活中总有一些时候,事情似乎无法按计划进行。你期待已久的旅行取消了,你的房子卖不出去了,你已经三个星期没有锻炼了。所有这些事情都发生在我身上,有时,同时发生)”及常识可知,E. The truth is, it's hard not to lose control of yourself in these moments.(事实是,在这些时刻你很难不失去控制)能够衔接上文,其中“in these moments”和前面的“there are times”对应。故选E。
【36题详解】根据上文“Contrary to what you may think, I'm a believer in giving in to how you're feeling, at least for a moment.(与你所想的相反,我相信你会屈服于自己的感觉,至少在那一刻)”可知,我们会屈服于自己感受。 F. Better to fall into it, accept the situation for what it is, then get back on your feet and go again.(更好地陷入困境,接受现状,然后重新站起来,继续前行)符合语境,其中“accept the situation”与前文的“giving in to how you're feeling”相对应。故选F。
【37题详解】根据上文“Then, I look at the list and I cross out all the points over which I have no control. (然后,我看着这个列表,划掉所有我无法控制的点)”及下文“Next, I write down the possible actions against each point on the list.(接下来,我写下针对列表上每个点可能采取的行动)”可知,此处指删除不能做的,做自己能做的。 A. I focus on the things that I can do something about.(我只关注我能做的事情)符合此处语境,其中“focus on the things that I can do something about”和前文“cross out all the points over which I have no control”对应。故选A。
【38题详解】根据上文“I force myself into taking action by picking up the phone and asking someone for help(我强迫自己采取行动,拿起电话并向人们求助)”及下文“After all, a problem shared is a problem halved.(毕竟,分享一个问题就是问题的一半)”可知,打电话并向人们求助能够让自己的问题让他人分担一部分,解决起来应该就快一些了。 D. I always find that this simple act makes me fix things quicker.(我总是发现这个简单的动作能让我把事情处理得更快)符合此处语境。故选D。
【39题详解】根据上文“In my experience, the easiest way to keep calm is to regain control of your situation.(以我经验,最方便的方式是保持冷静来重新控制你的情况) ”可知,此处讲述了保持冷静重要性。 G. No matter how bad things are, keeping your calm will always help you find a better outcome.(不管事情有多糟糕,保持冷静总是会帮助你找到更好的结果)符合此处语境,其中“keep calm”和G选项中“keeping your calm”相对应。
Self-esteem is the ruling view you have of yourself. This includes your beliefs about your inner qualities and how you think others see you. 35 Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional and greatly skilled. Understanding this mysterious emotional currency might be the key to unlocking your own self-worth.
People with healthy self-esteem don't need to boast about themselves to others. People with low self-esteem may tell you how much everyone loves them, what a great job they do at work, and how amazing they are at pretty everything under the sun even though they really wonder if it's true. People may see them as obnoxious or "full of themselves". 36 They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. They also take care of themselves without second-guessing or apologizing. They are the people who we say seem "sure of themselves".
If you're starting to think you may have low self-esteem, you can work on the way you talk to yourself. When you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor to positive reinforcements and access the courage to show different sides of yourself. It isn't going to feel good at first, though. Keep going until it becomes less and less and maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help. 37
However, in serious cases of low or even non-existent self-esteem, you may want to call in a professional or a specialist. Good mental health is important, and professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give corrections. 38 It is the best way to get at the roots of your real self-esteem problems.
39 It will take some work but your entire life—from your relationships to your body image toyour work habits—will be touched with the kind of power that only comes from someone believing in themselves. This is the hardest part, and the greatest leap. With some changes and support, you can improve your self-esteem and see how everything else changes as a result.
A. Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.
B. You have the power to shape a new self-perception
C. This encourages you to speak openly without worry.
D. The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes
E. Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of his or her value or worth.
F. People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.
G. With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.
35.A 36.F37.G 38.C 39.B
【35题详解】空格下文“ Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional and greatly skilled.”(有些人即使很能干、很有技能,也可能会发展出低自尊。) A“Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.”(然而,自尊并不总是根植于现实。)
【36题详解】这段第一句“People with healthy self-esteem don't need to boast about themselves to others. ”(有健康自尊的人不需要向别人吹嘘自己。)可见,整一段都在讲健康自尊的人们。再者空格后“They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. ”(他们不羞于分享想法,包括对他人的建设性批评。)可知,选项B的“People with a healthy level of self-esteem ”与整段的指代一致,故选择F。
【37题详解】根据空格前“When you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor.....Keep going until it becomes less and less and maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help.”(当你停止消极的自我对话时,你就能敞开心扉...... G"With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth."(通过一些练习和坚持,你会赢得这场内在的斗争,看到你的自我价值。)
【38题详解】空格前“professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give corrections. ”(做心理治疗的专业人员不会通过判断或给予纠正。)可知,这个现象与选项C中指代的this指代一致,专业人员不会判断或者纠正,所以这将鼓励你去放开说。故选择C.
【39题详解】空格后“It will take some work but your entire life—from your relationships to your body image to your work habits”(这需要付出一些努力,但你的整个生活——从你的人际关系到你的身体形象,再到你的工作习惯),可知it 指代与选项B"You have the power to shape a new self-perception(你有能力塑造一种新的自我认知)相一致,可知新的自我认知需要一些努力,但会让你受益颇多。故选择B.

Sometimes in our life we face this problem: loved ones as well as strangers annoying us. At home, we’ve had to put up with children screaming during online meetings, and family members on the computer all the time. 35
Kindness seems like a distant memory. The ability to live peacefully with annoying housemates or neighbors seems more difficult than ever. 36 If we take kindness as a skill, making it a daily practice, it will come easier over time.
37 Loving Kindness Meditation (默想) (LKM), which dates back to the time of its roots to early Buddhism, helps us find sympathy for one another even during trying times. The meditation asks us to send thoughts of loving kindness to loved ones, then to acquaintances (people you don’t know very well) and finally to challenging people. Over time, our unkind thoughts are replaced with more open, accepting ones. Anger is replaced by love, or at least kindness.
Donald Altman, a psychotherapist from Portland, Oregon, says LKM helps us recognize we are all weak and have been hurt. 38
So how? To begin with, Altman suggests finding a quiet place to sit. He says to then imagine a favorite family member or friend sending you the words, “May you be well, happy and at peace.” After a few minutes, direct the words at yourself, “May I be well, happy and at peace.” 39 Replace the “I” with the name of a teacher or coach, then a family member or friend, then an acquaintance, and finally an unfriendly person in your life. End the meditation by spreading the blessing to all living beings.
Indeed, we should find our own way toward LKM—but only if we are prepared to access its benefits and extend them to anyone who may need them.
The good news is that it isn’t lost.
A. Luckily, we can look to ancient disciplines for guidance.
B. At work, we’ve had to face the added pressure these demanding jobs create.
C. Then, extend the blessing to other people, in order of decreasing fondness.
D. For that reason, we could all benefit from love’s warm and comforting blessing.
E. You can combine the words with breathing, repeating a phrase of love for yourself.
F. Outside, we’ve encountered drivers speeding on busy roads and passengers talking loudly on the subway.

Humans start developing a sense of humour as early as six weeks old, when babies begin to laugh and smile in response to stimuli ( 刺 激 物 ). Laughter and humour provide psychological scientists with rich resources for studying human psychology.
Theories focusing on the evolution of laughter point to it as an important adaptation for social communication. For example, in 1950, a U. S. sound engineer started recording his own ‘laugh tracks’. These were intended to help people at home feel like they were in a social situation. He even recorded various types of laughter. 35 _________
In one study, carried out in 2016 at the university of California, samples of laughter from pairs of English-speaking students were recorded and played to listeners from 24 diverse societies.
36____________ On average, the results were remarkably consistent: worldwide, people’s guesses were correct approximately 60% of the time.
Another study by researchers of Australian National University was based on the assumption that humour might provide a pause from dull situations in the workplace. 37_________ The researchers first asked the students to cross out every instance of the letter ‘e’ over two pages of text. The students then were randomly assigned to watch a video clip. Some watched a clip of the BBC comedy Mr. Bean, and others a factual video about the management profession.
The students then completed a task requiring persistence in which they were asked to guess the potential performance of employees based on provided profiles, and were told that making 10 correct assessments in a row would lead to a win. 38__________ Students who had watched the Mr. Bean video ended up spending significantly more time working on the task, making twice as many predictions as the other group.
39__________ Again, participants who watched the humorous video spent significantly more time working on this boring task and completed more questions correctly than students from the other group.
Traditionally, individuals are advised to avoid things such as humour that may distract them from the accomplishment of task goals. However, humour actually helps relieve stress and facilitate social relationships. It is not only enjoyable but more importantly, energizing.
A. Participants were asked whether the pairs were friends or strangers.
B. This ‘mental break’ might facilitate the addition of mental resources.
C. The researchers then had participants complete long multiplication questions by hand.
D. A team made up of 30 psychological scientists played these recordings to different people.
E. However, the software was programmed that it was impossible to achieve 10 correct answers.
F. Researchers have also found different types of laughter serve as codes to complex human bonds.
G. He found out a simple ‘haha’ communicates a remarkable amount of socially relevant information.
35. G 36. A 37. B 38. E 39. C

F17. E18. G19. A20. D
设空处前的“Fake news is a term used to describe any news item that presents false information as facts in an attempt to make you believe a certain thing or react in a certain way.(假新闻(Fake news)指以虚假信息作为事实,试图让你相信某件事或做出某种反应的新闻。)”
根据本段小标题“Is there a sensational headline?(有没有耸人听闻的标题?)”
根据该段中的“If the article you’re reading has spelling mistakes,an incorrect date, or anonymous sources, bear in mind that this news article might be unreliable(如果你正在阅读的文章有拼写错误,错误的日期,或匿名来源,请记住这篇新闻可能是不可靠的)”可知,有拼写错误,日期不正确,或者来源是匿名的新闻可能是不可靠的。
根据本段小标题“Where does the news come from?(消息是从哪里传来的?)” D项“Most news articles will have a ’source’ for their information.(大多数新闻文章都有一个信息来源)”讲明了信息来源,其中的source与设空处后面的source构成词汇复现,故选D。

Children are naturally curious beings. ___16___ Teachers and parents often find themselves making use of rewards in the form of stars, promises of high grades and wonderful careers, or threats of punishment. But what if rewards and threats aren’t the answer?
Natural curiosity is sometimes referred to as “inner motivation”. ___17___ And it’s easy to understand why it’s hard to study something we aren’t actively engaged with, and if we’re passionate about the information we’re digesting, it feels more fulfilling.
External motivation, things like rewards and punishment, does have its uses too. Praise and stimulation based on achieving good grades or fear of punishment has been acknowledged to motivate older students. ___18___ So, if it’s the case that natural curiosity is motivation for better learning, how can we stimulate that interest?
___19___ Let children see their learning as their own thing and give them a bit more choice of what and how they learn. For example, if you want to teach children to read, let them choose which book they use. Whether it’s a graphic novel, TV guide or classic literature, the aim of stimulating their appetite for reading is achieved.
Likewise, build a relationship with children as learners and listen to their negative feelings. If they are unwilling to get involved in an activity, don’t rush to use threats or rewards. Try to find out why. Perhaps it’s simply because they feel the activity boring. ___20___
All in all, the answer to motivating children, especially the young ones, comes from inspiring their inner motivation. Once their inner motivation is generated, the children will be fired up.
A. The key is to allow some degree of freedom.
B. Children who see learning as fun are better at it.
C. It doesn’t have as much effect at an early age, though.
D. Then explain its value, even if it doesn’t seem appealing.
E. It’s unapparent whether they lack inner or external motivation.
F. Even top students have days when they aren’t motivated for learning.
G. But getting them to study what they aren’t interested in can be a tricky task.
G 17. B 18. C 19. A 20. D
根据上文“Children are naturally curious beings.(孩子们天生好奇)”以及后文“Teachers and parents often find themselves making use of rewards in the form of stars, promises of high grades and wonderful careers, or threats of punishment. But what if rewards and threats aren’t the answer?(老师和家长经常发现自己利用星星、高分和美好事业的承诺或惩罚的威胁等形式的奖励。但如果奖励和威胁不是解决办法呢?)”可知,后文提到老师和家长需要依靠一些奖惩手段来让孩子学习,说明本句与上文构成转折,指出让孩子学习不敢兴趣的东西很困难,G选项中them指代上文Children。故G选项“但是让他们学习他们不感兴趣的东西可能是一项棘手的任务”符合语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Natural curiosity is sometimes referred to as “inner motivation”.(天生的好奇心有时被称为“内在动机”)”以及后文“And it’s easy to understand why it’s hard to study something we aren’t actively engaged with, and if we’re passionate about the information we’re digesting, it feels more fulfilling.(我们很容易理解为什么学习一些我们没有积极参与的东西是很难的,如果我们对我们正在消化的信息充满热情,就会感到更有成就感)”可知,后文解释了为什么学习一些我们没有积极参与的东西是很难的,可见让孩子主动学习需要激起孩子学习的乐趣,故B选项“把学习视为乐趣的孩子更擅长学习”符合语境,故选B。
根据上文“External motivation, things like rewards and punishment, does have its uses too. Praise and stimulation based on achieving good grades or fear of punishment has been acknowledged to motivate older students.(外部动机,比如奖励和惩罚,也有它用处。在取得好成绩或害怕受到惩罚的基础上给予表扬和激励,已经被认为是对年长学生的激励)”以及后文“So, if it’s the case that natural curiosity is motivation for better learning, how can we stimulate that interest?(所以,如果天生的好奇心是更好学习的动力,我们该如何激发这种兴趣呢?)”
根据后文“Let children see their learning as their own thing and give them a bit more choice of what and how they learn. For example, if you want to teach children to read, let them choose which book they use. Whether it’s a graphic novel, TV guide or classic literature, the aim of stimulating their appetite for reading is achieved.(让孩子把学习看作是他们自己的事情,在学习什么和如何学习方面给他们更多一点的选择。 例如,如果你想教孩子们阅读,让他们选择他们使用的书。无论是漫画小说、电视指南还是经典文学,激发他们阅读欲望的目的已经实现了)”可知,本段的主旨是给予孩子更多一点的选择,即“允许一定程度的自由”。故A选项“关键是允许一定程度的自由”符合语境,故选A。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Likewise, build a relationship with children as learners and listen to their negative feelings. If they are unwilling to get involved in an activity, don’t rush to use threats or rewards. Try to find out why. Perhaps it’s simply because they feel the activity boring.(同样地,与作为学习者的孩子建立一种关系,倾听他们的消极感受。如果他们不愿意参与一项活动,不要急于使用威胁或奖励。试着找出原因。也许只是因为他们觉得这个活动很无聊)”可知,本句承接上文,说明找出原因的过程,D选项中it指代上文the activity。故D选项“然后解释它的价值,即使它看起来不吸引人”符合语境,故选D。
