湖南省衡阳市第八中学2022届高三下学期开学考试英语试题
I’m rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village?
It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown, river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticisms: Why didn't we start earlier, bring the map and on and on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, text messaging a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.
Just then-WOW! Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?
Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-colored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.
How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.
We miss a lot, almost everything, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?
24. Which of the following might be the destination of the author’s driving?
A. Her own home. B. A vacation spot. C. A tourist centre. D. Her cousin’s farm.
25. What made the author keep blaming herself in the beginning?
A. That the vacation was below her expectations.
B. That she wasn’t as good at using maps as before.
C. That her cousin and daughter couldn’t get along.
D. That lack of full preparations got her to lose her way.
26. The author felt really amazed because ___________.
A. her carelessness brought an unexpected pleasure
B. she discovered a tourist spot unknown to the public
C. she unintentionally reached what she had planned to
D. the right route to her destination came out of nowhere
27. What does the story intend to tell us?
A. Stay coo when you are trapped in trouble.
B. Make a change for the purpose of survival.
C. Slow down your paces to enjoy beauty in life.
D. Be positive because there's always an alternative.

Lucio Arreola is 50 years old, the father of three daughters and a bank manager in Puerto Rico. He is going to have a surprising Father’s Day this year. He finds just about every day surprising now. Arreola has a new heart, or at least, new to him. On April 20, doctors transplanted (移植) the heart of a dead 25-year-old man into him. Although he may never know the man’s identity, he and his family will always be grateful to him.
Arreola was told he had a heart muscle disease 15 years ago that weakened his breathing and circulation, so he went on a lot of medications. His wife and daughters worried about his health, while he worried about their happiness.
Lucio Arreola has been recovering from his heart transplant surgery at Houston Methodist over the past two months. “One day up, one day down,” he said. “Some days dark, some light. But what happens is that when the sun is out, you really feel it. Every breath is sweet. You see the trees and people. You hear your daughters laugh, and it’s like birds singing. You tell yourself, ‘There is no time in life for anything but love.’”
Liz Laguaite, a hospital music therapist, told Arreola and his family, “Why don’t you try to write a song together about what you’ve been through and what you’ve learned?” They decided to try. Lucio Arreola worried that illness might make his daughters see him as a delicate man. But instead of frailty, they mostly saw his courage to go on. And he said their love was like his own powerful heart muscle that gave him faith, hope and courage.
“My weak heart,” he said, “helped make them strong.”
Lucio Arreola said he had learned that human hearts were delicate. But a family’s love was enduring. The Arreolas recorded the song they created while Lucio recovered. The song begins with the strong beat of a father’s loving heart.

Nashville-based helicopter pilot Joel Boyers had just finished his job on Saturday morning and was heading home when he received a call for help from a woman in Pennsylvania. Her brother Johnson’s home in Waverly, Tennessee, was underwater and he was trapped on a roof with his daughters. Could Boyers help?“I thought how I would feel if I told her I was not even going to try?” he said in a Thursday interview. “She just so happened to call the right person, because I’m the only person crazy enough to even try to do that.”
The weather was terrible and Boyers had to deal with hills and power lines on the way to Waverly, a small city about 60 miles west of Nashville. Just before reaching the town, he found the Internet was down, making it impossible to locate the house he was looking for. He flew on anyway.
“When I arrived, it was nothing but raging water below me,” he said. A few people were out in boats, rescuing the trapped. Boyers was alone in the sky. He started flying up and down the flooded area, grabbing anyone he could.
Boyers said he ended up rescuing 17 people that day. He was proud of that, but said he was the one who should be thanking them. “I literally prayed just days before this that I would be given some meaning in my life, and then I end up getting this call,” he said. He had flown over disasters before including floods, but “The police are usually there, and my hands are tied. This time there isn’t any,” he said.
To perform the rescues, Boyers had to carefully avoid power lines, balance his skids (打滑) on sloped rooftops, and fly over flood waters. It took all the skills learned over 16 years of flying, including for a television news station, for documentaries and for country music stars. “I don’t want to lie,” he said. “It was almost a little fun for me.”
4. Why did Boyers fly to Waverly?
A. Because he had to do his routine tasks.
B. Because his brother was caught in the flood.
C. Because he was going to have an interview.
D. Because he received an emergency call.
5. What was the biggest obstacle to finding Johnson’s house?
A. A long distance. B. The Internet failure.
C. High mountains. D. Fallen power lines.
6. Which of the following best describes Boyers?

C. Modest and creative. D. Humorous and cooperative.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

“Don’t answer it,” I said to Sam. Our door in the inner city is constantly knocked on; our previous door in the suburbs rarely so. Sam has a full-time job and cannot spend his days answering requests to fix leaking baths or carry cash to the bank.
Sam opened the door and it was Mervin.
“There's a bird on the second floor,” he said. “It’s in trouble.”
Sam followed Mervin upstairs. Mervin pointed and tuned to let Sam look. It was a pigeon. The most common of all birds; the bird most likely to foul your newly washed car. And it wasn’t flying away. It was stamping in circles. As Sam went to look, Mervin coughed, “Number two.”
Sam asked him to repeat that. “Number two.” Mervin said. “The pigeon has been sitting in his own number two, and now it's stuck to his foot.”
It had rained for five days and the bird was young. It could have been sheltering in a wet nest of its own waste, which had then dried on its foot, preventing it from flying away. The pigeon moved in a few more circles. Sam bent to take another look. Mervin said. “All right, then.” and walked away.
“Why does everyone think you must solve the problems around here?” I said to Sam when he returned with his story. “It’s a bird. Just leave it on the stairs, and let nature take its course.” Sam didn’t agree. Then he went to the garage and emptied the cardboard box containing our imported camping mats. He returned with the gray pigeon in the box. He showed the bird to our children and they decided to keep it.
They put its foot in the warm water bath and got rid of its waste. Immediately the pigeon erupted in a bomb of feathers and began flying.
4. How did the author feel about the knocks?
A. Surprised. B. Frightened. C. Excited. D. Annoyed
5. Why was the pigeon moving in circles?
A. It was learning to fly. B. It was trapped by its waste.
C. It got caught in the rain. D. It was badly injured.
6. What did Sam use the cardboard box for?
A. To shelter the bird from the rain. B. To lend it to Mervin.
C. To make a nest for the bird. D. To collect our camping mats.
7. We can learn from the text that Sam is ________.
A. warm-hearted B. single-minded C. self-conscious D. hot-headed

Just then, Senora Ines arrived and asked Rosaura if she wouldn't mind helping serve out the hot dogs, as she knew the house so much better than the others.
“See?” said Rosaura to the girl with a bow, and when no one was looking she kicked her in the shin (胫骨).
Apart from the girl with a bow, all the others were delightful. The one she liked best was Luciana, with her golden birthday crown, and then the boys. Rosaura won the sack race, and nobody managed to catch her when they played tag. When they split into two teams to play charades, all the boys wanted her for their side. Rosaura felt she had never been so happy in her life.
The best came after Luciana blew out the candles. First the cake. Senora Ines had asked her to help pass the cake around, and Rosaura had enjoyed the task very much because everyone called out to her, shouting “Me, me!” Rosaura remembered a story in which there was a queen who had the power of life or death over her subjects. She had always loved that, having the power of life or death. To Luciana and the boys she gave the largest pieces, and to the girl with a bow she gave a piece so thin one could see through it.
After the cake came the magician. A true magician, he could untie handkerchiefs by blowing on them and make a chain with links that had no openings. He could guess what cards were pulled out from a pack and a monkey was his assistant. He called the monkey "partner".

There is no such thing as a perfect woman, and Nothing but Thirty screenwriter Zhang Yingji wanted to convey this message in telling the stories of three different women, who have found very different ways to climb their own mountains.
Wang Manni is a woman who will climb any mountain as long as she finds it challenging. Zhong Xiaoqin is one who will only climb if she has someone to go along with her. She will not overexert herself, and she will definitely stop once she has reached a comfortable place. Gu Jia, on the other hand, has already started to think about reaching the peak before she even starts the climb, regardless of whether she is alone or has company.
In a sense, the scriptwriter purposely created Gu Jia as the perfect woman of thirty. She is married, with a successful husband and a young son. She is living the dream, but Gu Jia does not feel complete. She feels lost. She is flawed. She has episodes of succumbing to her own greed and disregard to those around her.
“She is someone who chases alter perfection.” said Tong Yao (who portrays Gu Jia). “Obviously, this is stressful for those around her. She hides things. She isn’t perfect, but in front of others, she has to stay perfect.”
Her chase for perfection and her stubbornness to maintain this image has effected many of the relationships in her life. She chases after what she believes is right for others. Because of this, she and her husband start to see and value things differently, which puts a strain on their relationship.
Gu Jia’s personal struggles give life to the character. Many viewers are able to relate to her, and, through her character, find a shadow of themselves. There’s still a lot left that we can learn from the women of Nothing but Thirty, but maybe like them, we too can find the courage in ourselves to walk on that road which is truly meant for us.
24. According to the article, which of the following best describes Zhong Xiaoqin’s personality?
A. Ambitious and goal-driven B. Moderate and content
C. Aimless and impulsive D. Visionary and independent
25. According to Paragraph 3, what is not true about Gu Jia’s life?
A. She has her own worries and insecurities.
B. She leads a seemingly perfect and enviable life.
C. She can be greedy and insensitive to others’ feelings.
D. She is discontented with life because of her husband.
26. According to the passage, audiences have a preference for Gu Jia mainly because she ________.
A. is a perfectionist B. stands up to her husband
C. balances her work and life well D. displays some identifiable traits
27. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To call attention to the rise of feminism.
B. To introduce the plot of Nothing but Thirty.
C. To contrast the main characters of Nothing but Thirty.
D. To encourage viewers to find inspiration in Nothing but Thirty.

Intel Capital a global investment company, has announced it’ll invest in Shubham Banerjee’s company, making the teenager the world’s youngest tech entrepreneur to receive venture capital funding.
Shubham Banerjee learned about Braille, the writing system used by the blind last December. To the middle schooler’s shock, he discovered the Braille printers cost thousands of dollars, so he decided to make his own. Using Lego pieces, he created a cheap Braille printer for his school’s science fair.
Now what started as a science fair project has transformed into a family-run startup: Braigo Labs, with mom Malini Banerjee the CEO, and dad Neil Banerjee on the board of directors. Neil also drives Shubham around and accompanies him to press events, interviews and meetings.
The funding from Intel will allow the family to hire engineers and designers, allowing Shubham to return his focus to school and easing the financial burden on the Banerjee family; Neil was planning to dipping into his own savings before Intel made its offer.
The investment also earns Shubham a place in history. He is two years younger than Nick Dickens, who was previously the world’s youngest tech entrepreneur to receive an investment in 2011.
Braigo includes software that Shubham created using Intel’s new Edison chip — a development platform to power devices built by early startups — and a printer that uses various motors and tools. Shubham published the code for the software on the Web, so other developers can use it, but the family has a patent for the printer. Intel engineers, including his dad, helped Shubham build the model.
Many have welcomed the prospect of an affordable Braille printer, which they say could give blind people better access to literature and improve Braille literacy rates. Others, however, expressed concerns, saying that the demand for Braille printers will drop.
“The number of potential sales are quite limited because there aren’t that many people who read Braille,” said Ike Presley, national project manager for the American Foundation for the Blind. “We don’t know what the demand will be for hard copy Braille 5 to 10 years from now.”
But whether or not the company survives, the experience is almost certainly something his parents will long hold onto.
“He would stay up until 2 a.m., and I would be like, ‘Give it up Shubham, just give it up,’” said Malini Banerjee. “He would keep building and breaking things and I would get so discouraged, asking, ‘Why is he wasting his time?’ But now I tell every mom, ‘Believe in your child.’”
4. What can we learn about Shubham’s company?
A. It is about to go bankrupt.
B. It is inspired by a Lego project.
C. It is burdened with media attention.
D. It is staffed mainly by the Banerjees.
5. Why does Shubham have “a place in history”?
A. He shares online the code for the software open-source.
B. He reinvents the writing system used by the blind people.
C. He is the youngest to get investment from a big company.
D. He launches a new reading news app for the blind people.
6. What does Ike Presley really mean?
A. Braigo Labs’ future is not so promising.
B. People will read more materials in Braille.
C. It’s wise for Intel to invest in Braigo Labs.
D. More needs to be done to raise Braille literacy.
7. Malini Banerjee can be best described as _______ now.
A. hesitant B. demanding C. supportive D. courageous

On one day of May, when Jared Garcia got home from work, he opened the fridge and saw four different pizza boxes from four different restaurants. “It’s pretty embarrassing, but it’s the truth,” Jared said.
At 129 kilograms, the 27-year-old would sit on the couch watching TV, without energy left after conquering the workday. Late-night snacks included popcorn and ice cream. Gradually, his clothes felt like getting smaller every time he did laundry. Also, Jared missed the feeling he got when he used to play sports as a teenager.

You’re also eating in sync (同步) with your circadian rhythm (昼夜节律), which is more favorable for weight loss,” said Jared.
They immediately noticed their energy levels started to pick back up as they started eating pizza for proteins like turkey alongside vegetables. “When we’re eating only during a ten-hour period, we do want to follow good nutritional guidelines, including protein, fiber, enough fluids in our diet as well,” Jared said.
Jared loved eating healthier options, but always had a hard time getting up to go to the gym. For Bella, food was a weakness, but she was excited to get up and work out. Anyway, they would stay the course.

Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian has dedicated his emotional men’s 100-meter final run in Tokyo to star hurdler Liu Xiang, the first Chinese athlete to win a gold medal on the track in the men’s 110 m hurdles in Athens 2004.
Finishing sixth in 9.98 seconds, Su is the first Chinese to qualify for the Olympic 100 m final after setting an Asian record of 9.83 seconds in a highly competitive semi-final. Before Su, the last time an Asian runner reached the final of the Olympic blockbuster event was at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, where Japan’s Takayoshi Yoshioka finished last.

Su highlighted the fact that before Liu, no Chinese athlete had ever won a medal in an Olympic sprint event and for all Liu’s injury records, he is an inspiration to all. “If Liu Xiang had not come to prominence, many people might not have dared to dream that we could appear in the final of the Olympic Games and that we Asians were able to win a track and field gold,” said Su. “I finished sixth in the 100 m final, and hopefully, I could also bring encouragement to younger athletes and drive more young Chinese players to break the 10-second barrier.”

It was our first evening dog-sitting while our teenage daughter Rochelle was on vacation for two weeks. Louie searched the entire house for his “mommy”. Then, that disappointed but determined puppy (小狗) developed a plan.
While my husband Paul and I were watching TV, we heard loud noises. Something heavy was being dragged down the stairs. I looked around and saw this six-month-old puppy laboriously dragging his large, hard-sided carrier down the stairs. The next moment saw him drag his possessions one by one, first his blanket, and then his bowl, bone, ball and sweater. The project took most of the evening but Louie showed no sign of tiredness at all.
After packing all the items into the carrier, he attempted to jump inside. Once inside, he got the zipper between his teeth and, with all the strength, he pulled the zipper closed. Then he lay down and went to sleep in it throughout the night. The message was abundantly clear. He wanted to go see his “mommy”. He had seen her pack her suitcase and go away for her vacation. He must do the same so he could find her. When I unzipped his carrier in the morning, Louie was excited, but his “mommy” was nowhere to be seen.
The puppy surprised us with new undertakings every day. His absolutely favorite activity was going for a car ride. The possibility of stopping at McDonald's was his consideration. But one day, my husband didn't stop at McDonald's. He left Louie in the car with the window slightly open while he went to a drugstore. Louie managed to jump out of the window. He walked two blocks and found Paul, walking around him as if saying, “Can we go to have fried chicken now?”
Louie is an old gray-haired dog now, but he is still up to his old, and new, tricks.
24. Why didn't Louie show any sign of tiredness?
A. He was eager to see Rochelle. B. He could drag the carrier easily.
C. He wanted to delight Paul and me. D. He enjoyed searching the house.
25. How could Louie manage to pack himself?
A. He did that as trained. B. He used his strong teeth.
C. He followed his owner. D. He employed all his strength.
26. Why did Louie enjoy going for car rides with Paul?
A. He could play at McDonald's.
B. He could have his favorite food.
C. He could walk through the blocks freely.
D. He could accompany Paul to the drugstore.
27. Which of the following can best describe Louie?
A. Clever and well-trained. B. Brave and proud.
C. Strong-minded and smart. D. Faithful and quiet.
