A shop owner placed a sign above his door that read:”Puppies for Sale”. Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner.
“How much are you going to sell the puppies for?” he asked in a low voice.
The store owner replied, Anywhere from $ 30 to $ 50.
The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. “But I only have $ 2.37,” he said. “Can I please look at them?”
The shop owner smiled and in no second whistled. Out of the kennel came a lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur. One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping(跛行)puppy and said, “What's wrong with that little dog?”
The shop owner sighed and explained that the vet had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn't have a hip socket(髋臼). It would always limp.It would always be lame.
Hearing these words, the little boy became excited, “That is the very puppy that I want to buy.”
“No you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him,I'll just give him to you,” the shop owner said, a little bit confused. The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, “I don't want you to give him to me.”

A brave dog fought off a coyote (丛林狼) twice her size to protect her 10-year-old owner after it attacked them. Owner Lily Kwan, 10, said she had just heard her neighbors in her Toronto, Canada community on Tuesday warning people of a coyote going after children in the area when the animal started biting at her heels while she was walking dog Macy.
In the video captured by a neighbor’s security camera, Lily can be seen running down the sidewalk with her six-year-old rescue dog while the coyote followed them so closely.
“I thought, ‘Am I next, what is going to happen to me?’” Lily told the local newspaper. “I was screaming for help but no one heard me,” said Lily. “I saw this coyote trying to attack my dog and I tried to ring people’s doorbells and knock on people’s doors. Luckily, this one neighbor let me in.”
But while Lucy made it to safety, Macy wouldn’t follow her inside. Instead the little dog turned around toward the coyote. After briefly screaming Macy’s name, Lily ran onto the neighbor’s second floor. Macy could be seen fighting with the coyote, before it caught her and bit her in its mouth and shook her violently. She cried in pain, but kept barking and bit the coyote back until it gave up and ran away finally.
“She’s a super brave dog,” Lily said “I love her so much, and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote.”
Lily’s mother Dorothy Kwan, said she was not surprised when hearing Macy’s action. “My dog would do anything for our family, so I’m actually not surprised that she did that,” Dorothy Kwan said.

A few senior high students were going to Fort Lauderdale with sandwiches and drinks in the paper bags, dreaming of the golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished behind them. As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice a man, who sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He fixed his eyes on the photo in his hands, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.
Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, and everybody got off except the man. He sat rooted in his seat, and the students began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life: perhaps he was a sea captain, a runaway from his wife, an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus, one of the students sat beside him and introduced himself.
“We’re going to Florida,” the student said brightly. “I hear it’s really beautiful.”
“It is,” the man said quietly, as if remembering something he had tried to forget.
“Want some bread?” the student said. He smiled and took a piece. He thanked him and retreated again into his silence. After a while, the man told his story slowly and painfully.
His name was Vingo, he had been in prison in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home. “ When I was in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, if it hurt too much, she could just forget me, I’d understand,”
“Last week, knowing I would be free, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick and there’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she would take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come home with her. If she didn’t accept me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I’d go on through.”
“Wow,” the student exclaimed and gazed at the photo in his hands. All the other students were into it.

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year, thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.
Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.
We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.
When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.
But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.
We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.
Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment, which was on the first floor of the building. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, "No." He asked if we would like to buy some comic books (连环画), which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention (意图) to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen. Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie (解开) the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

Wide awake, I sat up in bed before dawn. I'd had another dream about Jennifer, my middle child. She's 38 now. Usually in my dreams she's still a little shy girl.
Jennifer had been five years old and her older sister seven, when the twins were born. Everything changed. The boys demanded much of my time and energy, so I hardly had any left for their older sisters. Sweet, quiet Jennifer, sandwiched between the others, required almost nothing from me. Eventually Jennifer had her own children and lived about an hour and a half away. But it seemed as though she were worlds away.
I often dreamed about her. In this one she was a grown woman and mixed in with a crowd. I waved hard, “Jennifer! I'm over here!” But she didn't notice me.
I longed to hear my daughter's voice and called, “Hey, I had a dream about you.” Then Jennifer surprised me. “I dreamed about you too. But it was terrible. I won't even tell you.”
“But I am eager to hear.”
Her words came out without thinking, “We were walking through a vegetable garden. A farmer shouted that I'd stepped on one of his tomatoes and asked for 43 cents. I didn't have any money and turned to you. You said no. I begged. I woke up in tears.”
The pain in her voice almost cut my breath off. “There were so many things I should have done for you. I overlooked you. You seemed so competent and independent. I forgot you were just a child.”
There was silence on her end of the line. The communication seemed broken again. I called an old friend and told her about Jennifer's dream and our awkward attempt to connect. “Your relationship probably broke down over a lot of little things,” she said.

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business holidays. 3 years' devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have abundant time to accompany her.
For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds make a nest in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to accompany her without being invited. But whenever I made an attempt to break the ice, “I'm good” was about all she said to me. Code for “Leave me alone”.
“Why doesn't she want to do things with me?” I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence or feel ignored ? Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.
“Mom!” Micah yelled suddenly. “Come quick!”
Surprised, I rushed out, only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.
“The wind must have blown him out of the nest,” I said.
“No, it was Mr. Whiskers-- our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit annoyed.
Looking at the nest without the parents, “I'm sorry,” I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn't respond, but did not refuse my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest. “What should we do next?” I asked. No response again. Instead, Micah went inside and hopped on her iPad. “Bird videos?” I asked. “Yes, I'm finding out what to feed it,” she said seriously.

The first time I ever wandered into my college library was when I was in Fresher’s Week. That afternoon, I didn’t have a tight schedule and I decided to go walking around the campus. I went to different places until I saw a door with a sign “library” on it. I pushed the door open, and what welcomed me were rows of tall shelves, with lots of books on them. It was as if each book on the shelves had its own unique smell and each book was trying to tell its story. I walked up to the first shelf and picked up the first book that caught my attention.
Luckily, a book exhibition was taking place there. The author of one of my favourite books was giving a lecture. Her book inspired me a lot, so I was very happy to see her. While I recorded her lecture with my phone, I had so many questions coming into my mind to ask her.
After that, I came across a new friend at the exhibition. We discussed what we thought about the exhibition and we had a lot in common to share. He talked about how novels expand one’s horizons, and how they draw people into another world. “A good writer makes a reader who has never been to Europe or any other continent experience that continent without stepping foot onto it.” What he said really impressed me.
At the very moment, one of his friends was looking for him. I wanted to add him as my friend, only to find my phone had run out of power. So we had to swap phone numbers. After saying goodbye, I remained in the library, picking up a novel to read.

Things only got stranger in art class. Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table fromAgatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn't looking.
Now, Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all, she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass(放大镜) abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence's table
and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing? This wasdefinitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on, but they keptsmiling at her in a slightly strange way. Of course, Agatha could have asked them what they were upto, and they might have told her - -but she wouldn't have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school, Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha andher mum. Agatha saw them go into the bookshop. Strange, again. Florence didn't read much - - nomatter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school, Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play withher after school, but they said they couldn't because they were busy. Even more mysterious ..

Strange Footprints in the Snow
Jonathan woke up and looked around. For a moment, he wasn’t sure where he was. Then he remembered. He and his sister, Julie, were visiting Aunt Gwen. They had spent yesterday helping Aunt Gwen clean her basement. Today they would have time to play.
He looked out the window. Fresh snow covered the ground. He could hardly wait to go outside. Jonathan dressed and hurried downstairs to the kitchen.
“Hi, sleepyhead,” said Aunt Gwen. “Julie has already eaten her oatmeal. She’s outside.”
“That’s where I’m going as soon as I finish breakfast,” Jonathan said.
A short time later, he zipped up his coat, put on his boots, and walked out the front door. The sun made the snow sparkle. He looked around. He didn’t see his sister, but he saw something else. Strange footprints in the snow tracked across Aunt Gwen’s yard.
“They’re way too big to be Julie’s. They look like they belong to a dinosaur,” Jonathan said. Then he added, “But that’s silly. Dinosaurs are not around anymore.”
He looked closer: The footprints were the shape of a very large oval (椭圆) with a stem. “Maybe they belong to an elephant or a hippo that escaped from the zoo,” he thought. He held his breath and listened. He didn’t hear anything.
He remembered a book he’d seen earlier on Aunt Gwen’s shelf. It was a book about animal tracks. He dashed inside to get it. The book had pictures of animals and the tracks they made. He turned the pages one by one, but none of the photos looked like the footprints in Aunt Gwen’s yard.
He stared at those footprints again. An animal that made such big tracks would have to be heavy. Its tracks should sink far down into the snow. Yet these footprints seemed to skim across the top.
How can that be? He wondered.
Jonathan noticed something else. The tracks never left Aunt Gwen’s yard. Instead, they turned and went around the house. “Maybe the animal is still here,” he whispered.
Quietly, he began following the footprints.

It all started at lunch. Someone asked Maria, a girl in my class, if she wanted a piece of pie. But because she’s allergic (过敏) to wheat, she can’t eat pie. Everyone was sympathetic. Then I said I was allergic to bananas. At first, everyone stared at me like I was from another planet. So, for the next ten minutes, I had to listen to all sorts of silly jokes about what bad luck I have because I can’t eat bananas. Later, when my friend Joe and I were walking home, he began to laugh about the incident at lunch. I complained that if I was going to be allergic to something, at least it should be something I hated. “Like what?” he asked. “Well, like...” I began, making a face, “maybe broccoli (西兰 花).” Joe laughed. Then he started clowning around, pretending that he was me eating broccoli. “Oh, oh,” he groaned, scratching (挠痒) himself. “I itch (发痒) everywhere!” When I got home, I smelled something delicious. “What smells so good, Mom?” I called out. My mother replied, “It’s dinner. I found a new recipe I think you’ll like.” After setting the table, I called my younger brother and sister. We all sat down, and Mom spooned out the vegetable. When I saw what it was, shock set in, and I was speechless. Mom said, “Luis, eat! It’s broccoli with beans.” I couldn’t move. She said again, “Luis, eat. You know the rule.” Mom had the rule that we had to eat everything on our plate, or we couldn’t have dessert, usually my favorite ice cream. I picked up my fork, took a tiny bit, and put it to my mouth. I put the fork down again. I thought of Joe’s crazy act and started scratching myself—slowly at first and then faster and faster. My brother and sister looked at me suspiciously. “Luis, what’s going on?” Mom asked. I said, “Mom, I think I’m allergic to broccoli.” “Really?” she asked. I nodded, and she studied me for a moment. Then she said, “I just read an article in a health magazine. It tells parents what to do when their kids show sudden allergies to broccoli. Let me get the cure.”
