    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
    “Tiki!” I yelled desperately.
Our dog, Tiki, had slipped out the door earlier that evening. Now I was searching the neighborhood trying to find him. My seven-year-old son, Jordan, was following behind.
I was worried about Jordan. He had lost so much already. The last few months had been difficult. After getting divorced, I could no longer afford our house in Indianapolis. Jordan and I moved in with my parents in northern Indiana. Jordan missed his friends and his old school. Losing his childhood dog was the last thing he needed.
We called out Tilki’s name until it was completely dark. We were forced to return home, empty-handed.
“Mom it’s all new here. What if Tiki can’t find Grandma’s house?” asked Jordan. “It’s okay,” I said. “He’s wearing his collar and dog tag (标牌).” It was at that moment that I realized Tiki’s tag listed our address and phone number in Indianapolis. If someone found him, they’d have no way to reach me. I felt sick to my stomach.
The next day, I kept asking around to see if anyone had spotted him. But after two weeks, I began to lose hope.
One afternoon, I found Jordan crying in his room. “At school, we had to write about our wishes,” he said. “I wrote, ‘I wish my dog would come home.’ Mrs. Rush hung our papers in the hallway. Every time I see my paper, I feel sad.” My heart broke for him.
So later that week, when he put on a stained shirt from his old school back in Indianapolis, I just let it slide. If it helped him get through the school day, that was more important than looking put-together.
When he got home that afternoon, he told me the school custodian (管理员) had asked him about his shirt. “I told him we just moved here from Indianapolis,” said Jordan.
The next day, I got a call from Mrs. Rush. “I’m calling on behalf of our school custodian,” she began. “His grown daughter found a dog a few weeks ago, and he thinks it might be yours.”

    第二节:读后续写
    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a cold yet sunny Saturday morning in February. Dad’s New Year’s resolution had been to get fit. Mum pushed him out of bed and told him to go jogging by the river. Later, after a nice lie-in, she went downstairs in her dressing gown and found the kids watching TV. She turned it off and said she was going to do something really special for Dad’s birthday. If they overheard anything, just promised to keep it secret.
Jenny looked at Mum with a puzzled expression on her forehead and promised they wouldn’t say anything whatever happened. But Jenny reminded Dad’s birthday was in June and it might be a little too early to get all steamed up about it.
Silent for a moment, Mum said she was not getting everything ready but just wanted to spare enough time for preparation as this year it’s a bigger deal than usual. Dad was going to be 50.
“50! Gosh, that’s half a century,” spluttered Gerry. “I knew he was old, but I didn’t realize he was ancient!”
Indeed, that was why Mum started planning a special party for him. Mum talked with grandma about the plan because her house was the only one in the family that is spacious enough for all friends and relatives. Grandma quite agreed and also started preparing.
“But you know how Dad feels guilty to bother others. You’ve got to admit,” reminded Jenny. Thinking over the special occasion, Mum was continuing with her secret when one evening, Dad was sitting at the dinner table and he suddenly slapped his forehead, “I just realized that I am going to be 50 in June. Let’s just quietly forget about it. I want to mourn (哀悼) the passing of my youth in private.”
“Oh, come on Dad, don’t be such a spoil-sport!” begged the kids, hoping to give mum a hand.
Realizing no more chance to hide the secret, Mum carefully worded her thought and shared her plan of having a little party at grandma’s house. Dad was stunned (震惊的) to no reply.

    第二节:读后续写
    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?” She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”
“OK, fellas!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest snowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance performance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or an assembly, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself — and me!!!
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

    47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. “We need to make the hole bigger,” he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.
Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking lo him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me — we were both lonely and anxious — and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.
There weren’t any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends — a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend…no joke. Weird kid.
One day, my parents asked Bill whether he’d watch me while they were away on business. This worked for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became “my” room.
Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow to the front of the lawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. “Sure you will. You’ll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing,” Bill said with a smile.
One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, “What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?” My parents said I could go over and ask him.

    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Birthdays are typically the occasions for delight and feasting. Family and friends get together on the occasion and convey their regards with the beautiful presents they bring with themselves. I am personally a big fan of birthdays and wait for my birthday approximately a month prior to the day.
This year, my birthday came off on last Monday. I didn’t know that my parents had arranged a special party for me. At eight o’clock in the evening of my lucky birthday, I was alone at home complaining and frowning, and pitying myself for my misfortune. I thought it was going to be a special day filled with presents and fun, but all I received was a “Happy Birthday”.
All of a sudden, the electricity was cut off and there was a complete darkness in the house. I couldn’t do anything. Therefore, I decided to go to sleep and end this unlucky day.
Out of the blue in that quiet night, I heard a sudden noise coming from downstairs. Startled and terribly shocked, I suspected that someone broke into the house. Immediately, I tried to phone my parents, but no one answered.
After a couple of minutes of fear, I started to calm down. Although in the meantime I heard more noises of people talking, I summoned up some courage and started heading for the basement. As I slowly drew closer to the basement, I guessed there were more than one person, but I found it hard to believe. There couldn’t be a lot of people in our basement!
Courageously, I opened the door of the basement. There was a complete darkness. There wasn’t a single noise. However, as I approached, I heard some laughter and confirmed that there were people. Suddenly, the lights were on and there stood my parents and friends cheering at me with the beautiful presents they had carefully prepared for me. It was a surprise party! The room was beautifully decorated with colorful balloons. Tables and chairs were laid and covered with white and contrasting red sheets. A gigantic birthday cake was positioned on the innermost table.

    第二节:读后续写
    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I’d seen Kim around campus long before the winter of my sophomore (大二) year. I’d admired her from afar. She was pretty with smooth hair, always wearing a bright smile. I’d decided that if I were to choose one girl as my friend, she would be the one. Even though our paths crossed several times a day, I felt as if she lived in some remote corner of a distant universe, where I was sure she had no idea that I existed.
She was there the night when I was invited to a party. A favorite band was playing that night, and I welcomed the chance to get out of my stuffy dorm room and away from hard work. I arrived late and took a seat at a table alone in the back of the room. The others didn’t notice me, but I didn’t care. I made a decision to hang out for fifteen minutes and then left.
I heard a familiar laugh.... Then, I saw her sitting with her friends. She seemed to shine, making everything and everybody else in the room fade to insignificance. How I wished I were together with her! I looked around and wondered if anybody else saw her, but they all seemed too caught up in their corners of conversation to notice. How could they not? She was shining.
I imagined myself walking up to her and then saying hello. What would she say? Would she just laugh or simply ignore me? Maybe my voice would crack, and I’d turn and slink away as if it had all been a mistake. Then I could simply spend the rest of my college years going around corners and taking roundabout routes to avoid seeing her.
At that moment, she turned toward the back of the room. Her gaze rested on me. I saw her lean over and whisper something to one of her friends, and then she got up and weaved her way through the cluster of tables.

    第二节:读后续写
    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Dad and Madison were walking through the party store gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake to not invite Lucy to the party. ”
“She never even talks to me! ”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope(缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My name is Franklin G. Takata, but everyone around here calls me “Find-It Frankie.”
Let me tell you something: you don’t get a nickname like that overnight. I’ve been finding things since before I can remember. Mom said it all began when I started teething as a baby.
And when I turned five, I got a partner, my dog Munchy. For my fifth birthday, my parents let me pick him out at the animal shelter. When we opened his cage, the first thing he did was dig into my pocket and find the candy I had been saving for later. I guess you could say I saw a bit of my younger self in him.
Anyway, Munchy and I were playing in the yard one Thursday afternoon when Mom approached us with the case in question. Her diamond ring was missing, and she wanted us to find it. If I had known how tricky the case would be, I might have hesitated. But I said then, “There’s nothing we can’t find, guaranteed!”
I asked Mom the first question I always ask when something goes missing: “Where do you last remember seeing it?”
“ I was m the kitchen baking cookies," Mom answered. “I took off my ring and placed on the small shelf above the counter. But then your aunt called, and when I came back from talking to her, the ring was gone!”
"Hmm. Well, it couldn’t have disappeared all by itself I said. "Munchy, let’s go take a closer look.” Munchy led the way to the kitchen. There was no sign of the ring on the shelf or the counter, but tiny paw prints in the spilled flour told me who might have seen it last.
“The cat! I exclaimed. “See those prints? Mr. Jingles must have been playing with the ring and knocked it onto the floor!” On my hands and knees, I searched all over the floor for the ring. No luck.
“Munchy, you’re up! Go find Mr. Jingles.” Munchy’s ears popped up. He never passed up an opportunity to annoy the cat.

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack’s. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in the following semester.
Jack was waiting outside for Frey. “What are you doing? Where's your stuff?” Frey asked, lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Willow's garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can't do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Willow’s. She thinks they’re kind of old and can’t afford to hire a cleaner.”
To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the Willow’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn't sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.
“You’ve got to see this.” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.
Frey frowned and shook his head. “Are you crazy? That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It's kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in Igo’s Sports Store”. With this, Jack put the rest money back.
Frey was about to grab the money from Jack’s pocket when they heard a voice, “Hello, boys. Come in for a chocolate cake! Mrs. Willow made one for you.” Mr. Willow walked into the garage.

As a country music song goes, "She's a wild one with an angel's face." That is my younger sister, lulu. When I think of er, I think of trying to tame a wild horse.
It is hard to find words to describe my relationship with Lulu. "All-out nuclear warfare" could not interpret it quite exactly. The irony is that we are very much alike: we share the hot-tempered and fast-forgiving personality.
Speaking of personalities, the Chinese Zodiac (属相) describes Lulu and me perfectly. People born in the Pig Year are "stubborn" and "tough" and often "fly into anger," although they "never harbour a grudge (记仇)" as they are honest and warm-hearted. That is Lulu and I exactly, with an age gap of twelve years.
I had my first face-off with Lulu when she was about five. It was a freezing winter afternoon in New Haven, Connecticut. Mum and Dad were at work. Babysitting Lulu at home, I decided that it would be the perfect time to introduce Lulu to the piano as I was in the learning process myself. Excited about working together - with her brown curls, round eyes, and China doll face, Lulu was desperately cute - I put her on the piano bench, on top of some comfortable pillows. I then demonstrated how to play a single note with a single finger, and asked her to do the same. A small request, but Lulu refused, preferring instead to smash at many notes at the same time with two open palms. When I asked her to stop, she smashed harder and faster. When I tried to pull her away from the piano, she began yelling, crying, and kicking angrily.
Fifteen minutes later, she was still yelling, crying, and kicking, and I had had it! Avoiding her blows, I dragged the screaming demon (恶魔) to our back door, and threw it open. The wind chill was six degrees below zero, and my own face hurt from just a few seconds' exposure to the icy air.

    THE PET LAMB
Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “You see I am here for the lamb,” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother's side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie!” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours!” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Pray tell your boy to stop a moment,” she said in husky (沙哑的) tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

At the end of the class, Mr. Smith announced our assignment for the next Monday was to talk about someone we were grateful to instead of a book report. Upon hearing it, I couldn't help complaining to Mareya that I was so nervous about having to talk in front of the whole class.
"You've been in at least three plays," Mareya pointed out. "If you don't get stage fright in front of those big audiences, why are you bothered by a few kids in our class?"
It was true, but in a play you were part of a group. I shook my head. Plus, there were so many people I was grateful to. There was no way I could possibly pick just one. Plus, even if I picked one, I'd have no idea what to say. Plus, even if I figured out what to say, I was a million-percent positive I'd mess up if I tried to say it out loud! I'd be standing there with everyone staring at me, waiting for words to come out of my mouth. "Oh, my goodness!" I pulled my sweatshirt hood (兜帽) over my face, put my hands over my ears and said, "I don't want to talk about it!"
But one thing about really good friends who knew you really well was that they didn't always do exactly what you asked them to. Mareya could be pretty pushy talking of being helpful. She scribbled (潦草地写) something on a piece of paper, lifted my hood, and smiled. She'd drawn a funny elephant with the word BREATHE coming out of its trunk.
"This is Franky, the 'everything's going to be all right' elephant." Mareya giggled. She held the picture up to her ear and asked, "What's that you say, Franky? You think my friend Arizona should come over to my house this weekend so we can work on our talks together?"
