Abut five weeks ag, I nticed the skin f ur pet lizard was grwing dusty. Later, ur lizard emerged frm its tank with its ld skin flwing behind it. I didn't think abut it much until a mrning last week when I kncked my favrite teapt ff the table. It burst int hundreds f pieces. As I swept up the mess, I wndered why we had been breaking s many things ver the mnths.
The destructin started three mnths ag. It was my husband's birthday. He had just lst his jb. The uncertainty was starting t wear n us, s I wanted t d smething special.
“Let's make a cake fr Dad!” I cried. My kids screamed with jy. We baked, iced and sprinkled fr mst f the day. Candles n the cake! Ballns n the walls! Flwers n the table!
Tw hurs befre my husband came back hme frm anther jb interview, my daughter climbed up t grab a glass vase frm a high shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces f glass were everywhere. She sbbed ludly as I threw the cake away. My husband had banana pudding fr his birthday.
Three days ag, the light in ur living rm suddenly went ut. After several frustrating hurs f unsuccessful attempts t fix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jrdan dcumentary series The Last Dance.
The pignancy (酸楚) f Jrdan retiring frm his belved basketball t play baseball and what had pushed him t make such a tugh decisin tk me by surprise. As I watched him take ff his basketball unifrm and replace it with a baseball unifrm, I saw him leaving behind the layer that n lnger served him, just as ur lizard had. Neither f them chse the mment that had transfrmed them. But they had t live with wh they were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we have t learn t leave the past behind.
Humans d nt shed skin (蜕皮)as easily as ther animals. The beginning f change is upsetting. The prcess is tiring. Damage changes us befre we are ready. I see ur lizard, raw and nearly new.

New App Helps Peple Remember Faces
Large gatherings such as weddings and cnferences can be scially verwhelming. Pressure t learn peple's names nly adds t the stress. A new facial-recgnitin app culd cme t the rescue, but privacy experts recmmend prceeding with cautin.
The app, called Scial Recall, cnnects names with faces via smartphne cameras and facial recgnitin, ptentially aviding the need fr frmal intrductins. “It breaks dwn these scial barriers we all have when meeting smebdy, ” says Barry Sandrew, wh created the app and tested it at an event attended by abut 1, 000 peple.
After receiving an invitatin t dwnlad Scial Recall frm an event rganizer, the user is asked t take tw selfies and sign in via scial media. At the event, the app is active within a previusly defined gegraphical area. When a user pints his r her phne camera at an attendee's face, the app identifies the individual, displays the name, and links t his r her scial media prfile. T prtect privacy, it recgnizes nly thse wh have agreed t participate. And the app's creatrs say it autmatically deletes users' data after an event.
The start-up has als develped a versin f the app fr individuals wh suffer frm prspagnsia, r “face blindness, ” a cnditin that prevents peple frm recgnizing individuals they have met. T use this app, a persn first acquires an image f smene's face, frm either the smartphne's camera r a phtgraph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spts that same face in real life, the previusly entered infrmatin is displayed. The cllected data are stred nly n a user's phne, accrding t the team behind the app.
Ann Cavukian, a privacy expert wh runs the Privacy by Design Center f Excellence praises the app's creatrs fr these prtective measures. She cautins, hwever, that when peple chse t share their persnal infrmatin with the app, they shuld knw that “there may be unintended cnsequences dwn the rad with that infrmatin being used in anther cntext that might cme back t bite yu. ”

Nstalgia(怀旧) has becme increasingly cmmn in ur current climate f unexpected, fast-paced change. Mre and mre peple are turning back with lnging fr what feels like simpler, sweeter times. They cllect cassette tapes, manual typewriters even decades-ld vide games.
Is it a mistake t get t bsessed with the past? Sme psychlgists warn that t much devtin t the s-called gd ld days is an escape frm reality; it can indicate lneliness r that a persn is having a difficult time cping in the present. Psychlgist Stephanie Cntz argues that nstalgia distracts us frm addressing the prblems f mdern life and cntributes t anxiety, depressin, insmnia etc.
But new studies suggest that a mdest dse f nstalgia is nt nly harmless, but actually beneficial. They suggest it helps strengthen ur sense f identity and makes us feel mre ptimistic and inspired. It is als a tl fr self-discvery and memries are a psychlgical immune respnse that is triggered when yu want t take a break frm negativity. Interestingly, thse happy memries can be particularly beneficial bth t kids in their teens and t sciety's elders. Recalling ur childhd reminds us f “the times when we were accented and lved uncnditinally, ” says Krystine Batch, a psychlgist. “That is such a pwerfully cmfrting phenmenn, knwing that there was a time in life when we didn't have t earn ur lve. ” Nstalgia can transfrm even the mst rdinary past int legends which warms the heart and the bdy. Let's nt frget that nstalgia has been a surce f inspiratin t innumerable American writers. Mark Twain recalled his byhd, writing, “after all these years, I can picture that ld time t myself nw, just as it was then: The white twn drwsing in the sunshine f a summer's mrning. ”
S g ahead, daydream a little abut yur best childhd friend, yur first car, a lng-gne family pet. As Dr. Sedikidessays, “Nstalgia is abslutely central t human experience. ” But at the same time, keep these wrds f wisdm frm the great inventr Charles Kettering in mind as well: “Yu can't have a better tmrrw if yu are thinking abut yesterday all the time. ”
32. What did sme psychlgists in paragraph 2 prbably agree?
A. Nstalgia can cause sme mental prblems.
B. Nstalgia makes us devted t the present life.
C. Nstalgia shws yu are trying t get rid f lneliness.
D. Nstalgia helps us cpe with the difficult time we are ging thrugh.
33. There are many benefits f nstalgia except ____.
A. It can enable us t knw urselves better.
B. It can bring us sme cmfrt when we recall.
C. We are likely t gain attentin if we recall the happy childhd.
D. We can smetimes break away frm negativity with happy memries.

He raised the alarm and was thanked fr his ptentially life-saving act at the time. Later he was recgnized in the Extra Mile categry at the Micrlise Driver f the Year Awards.
Rn had been frced t abandn his car due t the cnditins fllwing a heavy snwfall in the regin, but he was determined t reach his custmers. He walked nine miles t wrk befre taking ut a full delivery.
His rund that day tk fur hurs lnger than usual, but he saw hw desperate sme custmers were and hw appreciative they were when he arrived. He tk ut an extra delivery, arriving back t his base in Leeds after midnight.
Simn Gregg, Asda’s vice president f nline grcery, said. “We’re really prud f Rn fr winning this award fr ging the extra mile. Rn demnstrates the Asda values every day f ging abve and beynd t ensure ur custmers get their rders. Grwing up as kids we are tld t share ur tys and nt t be selfish. We als live in an age when discussing ur feelings is encuraged. But when des it all becme t much? With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a carpet as a dress, the questin is: when can sharing becme versharing n scial media?
“Oversharing” has becme assciated with scial media, but it isn't exclusive t this platfrm. Imagine yu head t a party and meet x k w smene. Within five minutes they have revealed private details abut their life. While sme f us may try t escape these peple, accrding t marriage advisr Carlyn Cle, this frm f versharing culd cme frm a strng desire t cnnect with smene. But hw des this translate t scial media?
Dr. Christpher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychlgy (网络心理学),says the mre details peple disclse, the less sympathy we express when things g wrng. It seems that searching fr sympathy by versharing is generally cnsidered as negative rather than the cry fr help it culd really be.
Hwever, Dr. Hand's research als seems t suggest that the mre we pst n a platfrm, the mre scially attractive we becme—if the psts that we bang ut are psitive. Even back in 2015, Gwendlyn Seidman PhD said that we shuld avid cmplaining and being negative nline. We shuld als avid shwing ff, especially abut ur lve lives. It makes sense—if yur date is ging “that well", wuld yu really have time t share a pht with text?
S, hw can yu knw if yu are versharing? Well, why nt ask yur friends in real life. They wuld prbably be happy t tell yu if yur psts abut yur breakfast r yur cmplaints abut yur lack f mney really are t much.
8. What des the underlined wrd “exclusive" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Unique. B. Similar. C. Relevant. D. Fundamental.
9. Which f the fllwing may Dr. Hand agree with?
A. Sharing mre details nline can attract mre sympathy.
B. Oversharing negative experiences is equal t crying fr help.
C. Sharing negative psts can't help ne becme scially attractive.
D. Oversharing isn't likely t happen nline when things g wrng.
10. Accrding t the text, what shuld be avided fr nline sharing?
A. Reflecting n past bad manners.
B. Shwing a great many expensive gds.
C. Writing a recipe fr a balanced breakfast.
D. Recrding unfrgettable mments with friends.
11. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Develping gd relatinships by versharing

When given the chice, abut 85% f peple say they wuld nt want t knw abut sme negative event far in the future. Yet recently millins arund the glbe have dwnladed FaceApp, which allws users t see hw they might age in real life.
Many had fun with jking that they lve the FaceApp ld filter. Beneath the humr is a serius subject: Hw d we learn t relate t ur future selves? It’s imprtant that we try t because it culd help strengthen the lng-term decisins that we make. Hwever, we ften fail t make sacrifices fr the grayer versins f urselves.
Mre than half f the respndents in a recent survey f 2,800 Americans said they rarely r never thught abut what their lives might be like 30 years frm nw. This isn’t surprising, since mst f us are firmly rted in the present and thinking abut the distant future can seem like a distant pririty ( 优 先 ). My nging research might als ffer an explanatin: We tend t think abut ur future selves as if they are smene different frm wh we are tday. In an effrt t narrw these empathy ( 共 情 ) gaps, my research wrkmates and I have tried t humanize(使人性化) peple’s future selves in the same way thers have tried t humanize charity receivers. Given that a phtgraph f ne hungry child can spark emtinal reactins, and cause viewers t dnate, we have presented participants with vivid images f their distant selves.
That seems helpful. In a recently cmpleted prject in Mexic, we fund that expsure t future-self images led mre peple t cntribute t their pensins (养老金). Despite this research, I’m skeptical that the app users will suddenly increase their pensin cntributins and care abut their health. The silly app isn’t paired with an immediate pprtunity t change any f these things.
The lessn frm FaceApp shuldn’t be that we need t marry hi-tech visuals with savings fr retirement. The lessn, then, lakes the frm f a questin: What mre can be dne t urge us t think abut, care fr wh we will ne day becme?
12. What can we learn abut FaceApp?
A. It prvides future-self images. B. It is the mst dwnladed app.
C. It helps peple make decisins. D. It makes peple age in real life.
13. Why d mst respndents rarely think f their future life?
A. They have knwn future life frm FaceApp.
B. They fail t make sacrifices fr their future.
C. They attach greater imprtance t the present.
D. They cnsider future selves the same as tday’s.
14. What des the underlined wrd “that” in paragraph 4 refer t?
A. Cmpleting a prject in Mexic. B. Offering aging images f participants.
C. Raising cntributins amng viewers. D. Giving a phtgraph f a hungry child.
15. What’s the authr’s attitude t FaceApp?
A. Psitive. B. Dubtful. C. Ambiguus. D. Unfavrable.

The demlitin was hard wrk, but it gave him time t think abut what he wanted t d, and “t treasure what was there—the walls, the rust, the light,” Ycum said. “Every seasn, mre paint falls ff the walls and mre rust develps. It’s like an art installatin (装置) in there—a slw-mtin shw.”
Since the back building had been cnstructed withut windws, an all-glass frnt was added t the building t give it a view f the curtyard, and skylights were installed in the rf. The back f the building is a wrking area and a living rm fr Ycum and his wife. A srt f buffer (缓冲) zne between the frnt and the back cntains a bathrm, a kitchen and a mechanical rm, and the walls that separate these znes have penings that allw views thrugh t the frnt f the studi and the curtyard beynd.
Ycum and Bell, wh have just cmpleted an art gallery fr the city, feel that the experience frm the decratin f their building, fcusing n the inside rather than the utside, has influenced their wrk. It has als given these architects a chance t shw hw they can make mre ut f less.

Daniel Andersn, a famus psychlgist, believes it’s imprtant t distinguish televisin’s influences n children frm thse f the family. We tend t blame TV, he says, fr prblems it desn’t really cause, verlking ur wn rles in shaping children’s minds.
One traditinal belief abut televisin is that it reduces a child’s ability t think and t understand the wrld. While watching TV, children d nt merely absrb wrds and images. Instead, they learn bth explicit (明确的) and hidden meanings frm what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychlgy f characters in TV shws. Anther argument against televisin is that it replaces reading as a frm f entertainment. But accrding t Andersn, the amunt f time spent watching televisin is nt related t reading ability. TV desn’t take the place f reading fr mst children; it takes the place f similar srts f recreatin, such as listening t the radi and playing sprts. Things like parents’ educatinal backgrund have a strnger influence n a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by hw much a parent reads.” Andersn says.

In fact, research suggests that it’s the ther way arund. “If yu’re a smart kid, yu’ll watch less TV when yu’re lder,” Andersn says. Yet, peple f lwer IQ tend t be lifelng televisin viewers.
Fr years researchers have attempted t shw that televisin is dangerus t children. Hwever, by shwing that televisin prmtes nne f the dangerus effects as cnventinally believed, Andersn suggests that televisin cannt be cndemned withut cnsidering ther influences.

While parents, particularly mthers, have always been attached t their infants, scietal cnditins frequently made this attachment difficult t maintain. Firstly the high infant death rate in the premdern times meant that such attachments ften ended in hpelessness.
