    1. I have a(n) ________ to make to you--I opened your letter by mistake .
    A. apology B. disadvantage C. fault D. shortcoming
    【答案】A
A.A.apology道歉;B.disadvantage不利条件;C.fault缺点;故障;D.shortcoming缺点;短处。
2.We offer an excellent education to our students. ________, we expect students to work hard.
    A. On average B. At best C. In return D. After all
    3. Every morning he spends________ hour doing exercise, then he goes to________ work.
    A. a ;a B. an; / C. a; / D. an; the
    4. "You __ have a wrong number," she said. "There's no one of that name here. "
    A. need B. can C. must D. would
从“There's no one of that name here.” A.need需要;B.can可能;C.must一定;D.would会。
    5. Currently, about 35,000 works ________ in over 300 rooms in the Louvre, and it would take a lifetime to see everything.
    A. were displaying B. are displaying
    C. were being displayed D. are being displayed
    6. Yesterday I broke my favourite watch, and now I have to get it________.
    A. repaired B. repairing C. repair D. to repair
    7. ________ their hats into the air, the fans of the winning team shouted happily.
    A. To throw B. Throwing C. Thrown D. Being thrown
8.After months of research there was little hope ________ the lost car might be found.
    A.when B.where C.which D.that
“the lost car might be found”是对名词hope的解释说明,所以为hope的同位语从句。
    9. The money will be used to help the people________ homes were lost in the earthquake.
    A. what B. whose C. whom D. which
10.--May I use your dictionary?I'm stuck in the sentence.
--It's just on my desk ______.
    A.Got it B.My pleasure C.Help yourself D.come to power
    【答案】.C

How can having a childlike view of the world help the environment? Danish eco-artist Thomas Dambo combines a talent for recycling with a fairy-tale imagination to bring people worldwide closer to nature.
For the “Guardians of the Seeds” exhibition, Danish eco-artist Thomas Dambo built five trolls from discarded wood materials, which were appointed by Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG) for its splendid riverside woodland.
The exhibition composed of the five trolls aims to give visitors an emotional connection with nature that will encourage them to become keepers of it. For the exhibition, Thomas came up with a story that a family of trolls hid 10 golden seeds to protect the old forest. Using a map that's provided, visitors follow clues to find where the seeds are hidden.
Besides using carefully selected recycling materials to produce his works, to challenge himself creatively, the artist allowed for a degree of production on-site. He gave a skinny troll named Birk a beard made from the roots of fallen trees. The fur of another troll Roskva is made from bark. Also, Gro, sitting with her eyes closed in a yoga pose, has a tongue made out of a nearby deserted planter.
“Thomas wants people to interact with them,” says Gretchen, president of CMBG. “He wants it to be a journey of discovery where you're walking along and all of a sudden this big magical being appears in front of you. These are friendly, happy trolls. They're not scary, mean trolls.”
Thomas hopes that “Guardians of the Seeds” gives viewers the same joy he gets from an occupation that he compares to a hobby. He says too many people lose their playfulness in their adult life. The key quality of his work is just its playfulness. One of his trolls sits on a real car on a hillside, appearing to cheerfully ride it. He wants to reactivate a childlike imagination in adults so they begin to see trash as objects that can be repurposed in practical and even picturesque ways. And he loves to entertain kids, too.
Nowadays, Mr. Dambo gets a kick out of seeking waste everywhere, hoping to find more stuff he could refashion into something amazing.

By now, it is pretty well understood that we regularly pay for things in ways other than using money. Sometimes we pay sill with cash. But we also pay for things with data, and more often, with our time and attention. We effectively hand over access to our minds in exchange for something "fee", like email, streaming video or online shopping pages. As opposed to "paying" attention, we actually "spend attention", agreeing to the view ads in exchange for something we really want.
The centrality of that deal in our lives makes it unacceptable that there are companies who seize our time and attention for absolutely nothing in exchange, and indeed, without permission at all-otherwise known as "attention theft".
Attention theft happens anywhere you find your time and attention taken without permission, like the new, targeted advertising screens in hospital waiting rooms, the airlines that play full-volume advertising from a screen right in front of your face, or the advertising - screens in office elevators. These are just few examples in what is a growing category. Combined, they threaten to make us live life in a screen-lined cocoon(茧),shrunken and incapable of independent thought.
Then, what makes it "theft"?Advances in neuroscience over the last several decades make it clear that our brain's resources are unconsciously triggered(触发)by sound and movement;therefore the screens seize rare mental resources. Meanwhile, in the law, theft is typically defined as the taking control of a resource "under such circumstances as to acquire the major part of its economic value or benefit. " Given the established market value of time and attention, when taken without permission or compensation, it really is not much different from someone taking money out of your pocket. Thus, when the firms selling public-screen advertising to target audiences brag of rapid growth and billions in profit, those are actually earnings made by stealing from us.
    42. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 1? ______
    A. Preference for cash. B. Consumption of attention.
    C. Payments in shopping. D. Addiction to mass media.
    43. How does the writer show the wide spread of "attention theft"? ______
    A. By making a definition. B. By analyzing causes.
    C. By giving examples. D. By predicting results.
    44. Why is "attention theft" considered as a theft? ______
    A. It brings a fortune to the thief.
    B. It lays heavy burden on the brain.
    C. It takes up mental resources secretly.
    D. It brings about economic loss constantly.
    45. What could be the best title for the text? ______
    A. The Crisis of Attention Theft
    B. The Price of Attention Theft
    C. Ads:Source or Theft of Information
    D. "Paying" Instead of "Spending" Attention

故选A.

Just like everyone, I have experienced ups and downs in my life. I am an experienced engineer from India, I was told by my relatives, close friends and others that it was hard for a non-IT student to pursue a master's degree in IT and graduate from a US university.
I had never taken courses related lo computers or programming. l was never interested in being a programmer, but things changed. I became so fascinated with the convenience IT has brought to our life that I made up my mind to chase a master's degree in IT.
At first, I came across too many difficulties and setbacks. Coming from a middle-class family, the huge cost per credit was a big issue. My English accent was terrible. Most importantly, the course seemed impossible at first. Although I felt so discouraged and frustrated, I never thought of giving up.
Then I decided to choose my university because it promised its students to help them learn practically. During my first month, it was difficult to understand the Americans' accent and finish my assignments. But I never gave in. I walked two miles to the university every day so that I could use my travel money to buy a meal.
