从地点上看，除个人在家庭中举办的派对外，还有学校、机构在单位举办的联谊、庆祝活动，以及在宾馆、饭店、酒吧举办的正式及休闲派对，如dances and balls（社交舞会），blck party（社区或街区欢聚），cstume r fancy dress party（化装舞会）。还有一些专门设在户外举办，例如sea shre party，bnfire party（篝火联欢会）。甚至有些派对主办者会收取门票费用。 一般派对有正式和非正式之分，大致可分成三种类型：聚集式、家庭式和宴会式。聚集式：一种较随意的聚会，只要主办人提前发个邀请，说明时间地点就行了。到了那天，各人带上自己做的饭菜或买来的食品，包括点心、饮料、水果等，放在一起，供来者分享。家庭式：以节日或其他理由邀请客人前来参加的聚会。通常都是主人款待一切，来客多为熟人，也就无须过于拘礼。但美国人常常还延续一些欧洲人的习惯，给主人家带上一点小礼品，如鲜花、小工艺品、水果、点心等以示友好，增添欢喜。宴会式：较为正式，多为鸡尾酒会形式。会场内设有椅子，大家站着随意交流，吃的也是简单但却精致的自助餐。
