SHARK CONSERVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA
Take a two-week trip that you will never forget as a volunteer with sharks on a beautiful stretch of South Africa’s coastline. Head out to sea to witness one of the world’s most powerful (and most misunderstood) creatures on this inspiring project, enjoying watching them from both above and below water.
The DAY-BY-DAY schedule
Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday. You will be collected from the airport and spend your first night in a guest house in the city centre.
Day 2: You will be collected bright and early from the guest house and taken down to the project. The drive takes about 90 minutes. You will receive a welcome and head out to sea to witness your first sharks!
Day 3+: Most days you will be out on the boat with the sharks, depending on weather. Help out with the full range of tasks on the boats, and in conservation initiatives on land too.
Last day: On the final day of your project you will be taken back to Cape Town for your onward travel.
The price is £ 829, including the voluntary work programme with accommodations, airport transfers, one night in a guest house in Cape Town, breakfasts daily and lunches when on the boats. Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week.
It is an amazing experience! Some volunteers planned to stay for 4 weeks, extended to 6 weeks and still didn’t want to come home. If you’d like to chat about this holiday or need help, we’re very happy to help.

The family of a 6yearold adopted Chinese girl who badly needs a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植) believes they have found a match in China.
Kailee Wells suffers from a serious aplastic anemia (再生障碍性贫血), which prevents bone marrow from producing new blood cells. She has taken courses of treatment but has shown little sign of recovery.
The best help for such patients is a transplant of healthy marrow or blood cells from a suitable donor. Certain tissue of the patient and the donor must match.
Kailee's mother, Linda Wells, made her second trip to China earlier this month to find a donor. Her husband, Owen Wells, said that his wife believed doctors there had found a match.
“For these last 22 months, we've been living in fear that Kailee would take a turn for the worse and there would be nothing we could do about it,” he said.“Now we have something we can use and save our little girl. We are just about ready to start jumping up and down and rejoicing.”
Wells said a Chinese girl who is about a year old has a blood sample that matches Kailee's perfectly. The next step, he said, would be to make sure the sample is safely harvested and protected for transplant, the details of which have yet to be worked out.
Linda Wells first traveled to China in February to try to locate the girl's birth mother, who is likely to be a match. But she found no relatives and decided to try again this month.
“This gives us so much encouragement because now we found what we thought we would never be able to find for Kailee, ”Owen Wells said. “We're going to continue our blood donor drive to try to continue to help as many people as we possibly can. We're just so happy.”
24.What do we know about Kailee Wells?
A.She was adopted by a Chinese family. B.She has a oneyearold sister in China.
C.She was recovering from aplastic anemia. D.She is unable to produce new blood cells.
25.Which word can replace the underlined word “rejoicing” in Paragraph 5 ?
A.Waving. B.Moving. C.Cheering. D.Crying.
26.What can we infer from the text?
A.Linda Wells has found the girl's birth mother.
B.Owen and Linda tried every means to cure Kailee.
C.Doctors have worked out plans to protect the sample.
D.Owen and Linda visited China twice to find a perfect match.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Long and deep friendship between two families B.Faith leads to hope
C.Match found for a bone marrow transplant D.The journey to China

Life has gone mostly online for many people around the world. With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic global Internet traffic has become a big problem. Between January and late March. many major cities experienced an increase in Internet traffic.
Video meetings, online classrooms and stay-at-home entertainment have become a daily routine. This increase in traffic is testing the Internet' s strength. In March. major phone networks in the UK experienced mass outages(断供). People were not able to take calls, receive texts or use mobile data.
In the US, major telecommunications companies like AT&T said traffic was up 21 percent month over month. Video streaming services like You Tube, Netflix and Facebook have cut their picture qualities and download speeds. This is being done to reduce network traffic jams.
China has seen an Internet traffic increase of around 50 percent compared to the end of 2019. The country's network speeds went down sharply in early February. However, they returned to normal soon afterwards and have been working well. This is due to China’s work in building network infrastructure(基础设施), especially 5G technology. By the end of February, 164,000 5G base stations had been built nationwide. This has given Chinese networks the power to handle increased traffic.
“If there were no such development in the Internet network field. people could hardly enjoy such a colorful life at home. Online working and teaching could never be realized so smoothly," said Wen Kun, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
28. What happened to the Internet due to COVID-19?
A. Internet traffic was jammed. B. Internet access was cut off.
C. Internet service was ignored. D. Internet community was ruined.
29. Why did some US companies cut download speeds?
A. To increase Internet strength. B. To improve picture qualities.
C. To avoid Internet breakdown. D. To reduce the number of users.
30. Compared with other countries. China's Internet system_________.
A. suffered bigger losses B. recovered faster
C. cost less money D. started earlier
31. What is Wen Kun's attitude towards China's Internet network?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring.
C. Critical. D. Positive.
D
“You’ll get square eyes!” my mother used to say as I sat for hour after hour glued to the TV. I ignored her, of course. Past-forward a few decades and now I’m the parent. My 5-year-old lives in a world where screens aren’t fixed pieces of furniture. You can’t even avoid them by going outside. Screens are not only in our pockets; they’re everywhere.
The concerns have grown with the screens. In the past decade, we have heard that they will damage our mental health. Many of us feel more distracted by them, feeling guiltier and more tired as a result.
The apps and websites we can access on our phones have also sparked widespread concern. Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition, hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts. Social media has created a culture of mass narcissism (自恋), which has led many to worry about the emotional stresses on teenagers. A quick online search brings up dozens of papers linking screen use or social media with harmful effects on mental health, including depression and suicide.
Such statements are alarming. They are also widely believed, thanks to popular books like iGen by Jean Twenge, which claims that digital technology has ruined a generation. Yet, Amy Orben at the University of Oxford, who studies the impact of digital technology and social media in particular on mental health, holds different views. She claims that the underlying data can be used to tell different stories. She also spotted shortcomings in several large studies that claimed to show correlations (相关性) between the use of devices with screens and depression in users.
Twenge stands by her own finding pointing in turn to what she considers flaws in Orben’s research methods. For David Max, at Royal College of Child Health in London, the effect of screen time and social media use on mental health remains speculative. “We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says Davie. “We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is not responsible,” he says.
The explosion of mobile phone use has revolutionized our lives. I can download movies, write articles, communicate with my family and broadcast to the world all at the push of a button. Rather than impose constraints (限制), we should take a look at our use of screens and ask how they fit with the activities and lifestyle.
Every new technology with widespread impact has given rise to new fears. So the best bet may simply be to ask yourself what level of screen use makes you and those around you happy and try to stick to it. If you find yourself over addictive, don’t panic—and certainly don’t feel guilty. Nobody knows anything worth getting scared about.
32. According to the passage, people give likes, retweet or count followers to __________.
A. share one’s lifestyles B. show respect for others
C. seek social recognition D. relieve emotional stresses
33. The underlined word “speculative” probably means “__________”.
A. Doubtful B. specific C. important D. abstract
34. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Teenagers are more affected by screen use both physically and mentally.
B. Orben claims it is far too early to blame screen use for ruining a generation.
C. Big tech companies help to produce many research papers on mental health.
D. Twenge mainly introduces the overall benefits of digital technology in her books.
35. The passage is written to __________.
A. encourage readers to reduce the time of screen use
B. share different opinions on the effects of screen use
C. explain why screen use may have negative effects on people
D. relieve people’s concerns and worries about the use of screens

Making decisions when shopping is often a tough call. Even if you're satisfied with the first dress you try on would you go on looking for alternatives, comparing styles and prices ,until dropped dead?
Psychology researchers have studied how people make decisions and concluded there are two basic styles. " Maximizers" like to take their time and weigh a wide range of choices, sometimes every possible one —before choosing." Satisficers" would rather be fast than thorough
___36___So even if they see what would seem to meet their requirements, they can't make a decision until after they've examined every option to make sure that they're making the best possible choice. Researchers followed 548 job-seeking college seniors at 11 schools from October through their graduation in June. They found that the maximizers landed better jobs.____37____
"The maximizers is kicking himself because he can't examine every choice and at some point had to just pick something, " they say." Maximizers make best decisions and end up feeling bad about hem.____38____"
Satisficers also have high standards, but they are happier than maximizers. Maximizers tend to be more depressed and to report a lower satisfaction with life, his research found.
Faced with so many choices in our lives, we need to learn how not to waste time and energy on our decision- making. ____39____For instance, if you're picking a restaurant for lunch meeting, first deciding on a certain part of town or type of cuisine can narrow your choices.
Once you've arrived at a decision, stick with it. ____40____To limit the number of choices you can set a time for decision-making. Say you are buying a new bag, you could spend an amount of time studying features, price and value but if you give yourself only five minutes to make a decision, and there are only bags you can consider, you'll save time. You'll be happier with your decision, too.
A. Firstly, decrease your range of choices.
B. Maximizers are people who want the best.
C. Just accept no decision is ever completely perfect.
D Comparing is often a must when you make a decision.
E. Satisficers make good decisions and end up feeling good.

G. Their starting salaries were 20 percent higher but they felt worse about their jobs.

第一节
A篇21―23 DAD
根据Day 1部分中的“Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday”和Day2部分“You will be collected bright and early from the guest houseand taken down to the project... head out to sea to witness your first sharks”可知,真正的鲨鱼观赏之旅是在周一。
根据Day 3+部分中的“Most days you will be out on theboat with the sharks”可知,如果天气条件允许的话,第三天可以在海上航行。故选A。
根据文中的“Take a two-week trip”“The price is£829”“Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week”可知,两周的旅行费用是829英镑,之后每延长一周,费用增加375英镑。
由第二段中的which prevents bone marrow from producing new blood cells可知Kailee Wells患有严重的再生障碍性贫血症,她的骨髓不能产生新的血细胞。
由文中提到的Linda两次来中国及Owen的话 “We're going to continue our blood donor drive to try to continue to help as many people as we possibly can.”
A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据原文第一段“With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic, global Internet traffic has become a big problem.”
根据原文第三段“Video streaming services like You Tube, Netflix and Facebook have cut their picture qualities and download speeds. This is being done to reduce network traffic jams.”
根据原文第四段“However, they returned to normal soon afterwards and have been working well.”
本题是对于观点态度的判断,根据原文最后一段其所说的话“If there were no such development in the Internet network field. people could hardly enjoy such a colorful life at home. Online working and teaching could never be realized so smoothly”可知,“如果在互联网领域没有这样的发展,人们很难在家就享受到这么多彩的生活,在线的工作和教学从未像现在这样如此流畅地实现。”
C 33. A 34. B 35. D
根据第三段中的“Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition, hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts.”
根据画线词后的““We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says Davie. “We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is not responsible,” he says.”
根据第四段中的“They are also widely believed, thanks to popular books like iGen by Jean Twenge, which claims that digital technology has ruined a generation. Yet, Amy Orben at the University of Oxford, who studies the impact of digital technology and social media in particular on mental health, holds different views.”
【点睛】词义猜测题难度较大,画线词后起解释说明或举例说明的句子往往是重要线索,例如本篇第2题,根据画线词后的““We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says Davie. “We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is not responsible,” he says.”
B 37. G 38. E 39. A 40. C
可知与B项中的 want the best.
与A中的decrease your range of choices. 故选A。

People’s opinions are divided when it comes to the question whether we can order takeout food at school. Some people are in favour of it because it saves them much trouble, allowing them to have delicious food delivered directly to them. However, others don’t think it right to do so. They point out that takeout food is usually delivered in plastic containers. Countless plastic bags and boxes will cause white pollution. What’s more, there can be health risks involved in takeout food. Personally, I will say no to takeout food, which must be banned from entering the school, so that we can have a good environment.

Text 10
Good afternoon, shoppers. We need your attention. We have a lost boy at the front of the store. He has been in the manager’s office for 10 minutes, and no one has come forward to ask for him. He has light brown hair and blue eyes. (17) He is wearing a red T-shirt and jeans. He has a white T-shirt in his hand. On the back of the T-shirt is the word BOY spelled in big letters. He says his name is Jack. (18) He doesn’t know his mother’s name because he says he calls her “Mom”. He doesn’t know his address because he says his mom always takes him home. He appears to be about six years old. A clerk found him sitting in the toy section drawing in the coloring books there. (19) If his mother is still in the store, we ask that she come by and please pick up her son. (20)
