Cikgu Azam worked in an IT department. At the same time, he had a side job where he prepared activities for school children with special needs.
In 2007, during a program, he succeeded in helping a boy with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). “While I was assisting him, I could see the tears of joy coming from his parents who were there with us as well,” he said. “If you had more expert knowledge, you’d help more people,” his friends told him. With that, he went back to school to get a degree in special education.
In 2009, he became a special education teacher in a school. Trained to help students with cerebral palsy, when he came to the school in the first year, he was surprised to learn that he would also be teaching blind students. However, he did not back down in the face of such pressure, Cikgu took the time to educate himself on what would best help his students.
“It’s disappointing to see they are so used to their closed environment. It’s not because they are disabled, but because they don’t have the courage to explore the outside world that has caused them to be depressed.” He changed this by helping them run, simply putting his hands on their shoulders to guide them. One of his students, Nur Yusrina Alisya, won several awards in sporting events.
But as he’s gotten older, it’s difficult to keep up with them. “So, one day, I saw one student pushing a foldable trolley (推车) and the idea suddenly came to mind,” he said. Ever since then, Cikgu has made it his mission to create an even better device. He’s built Caballus RAFVI which is named after a blind but brave horse. “My students need it so they can participate in sporting activities. I’ll try to improve it,” he said. “I’m going to stick with my job though I’m getting older.”
24. What made Cikgu get a degree in special education?
A. The IT department’s requirements.
B. His success in helping a boy.
C. The boy’s parents assisting him.
D. The encouragement of his friends.
25. How did Cikgu find his first year in the special education school?
A. Challenging. B. Disturbing.
C. Promising. D. Refreshing.
26. What did Cikgu think the students lack?
A. Healthy bodies. B. Self-confidence.
C. Daily exercise. D. Families’ concern.
27. What can we infer about Cikgu from the last paragraph?
A. He’ll retire immediately. B. He’s looking after horses.
C. He’s a potential inventor. D. He’ll participate in a sport.

Scientists in Israel have taught goldfish an unusual way to reach a target -- by driving a small robotic car on dry land.
Six goldfish, regardless of their weight and size, took part in the experiment and were taught to drive in 30-minute sessions, conducted three times a week, every two days. The experiment was led by researchers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. They wanted to see if goldfish’s ability to navigate (导航) depends on their natural environment, or if they could navigate even under very unusual conditions.
To test the goldfish, the researchers created a special robotic car that could drive forward, backward, and from side to side. The scientists called the car a Fish Operated Vehicle (FOV).
Goldfish was placed inside a water tank on the FOV. Using a special system, the car tracked where the goldfish was and what direction it was swimming in. The FOV would then automatically move in the same direction. To prevent the goldfish from getting stuck in barriers such as walls, researchers equipped the car with lidar (激光雷达). The researchers tested them by placing the car in a small room with a pink target on one side--that was where the fish were supposed to arrive. The fish were rewarded with food when achieving the task.
The fish did indeed learn to drive the FOV, becoming more skillful in its operation overtime both in terms of achieving tasks and in the time taken to complete that task. The researchers wanted to check that the fish weren’t just memorizing a set of movements to earn a reward, so they repeated some tests with a new starting position or added other targets that were a different color. They found the goldfish were able to deal with those changes.
Though the experiment showed that the fish were able to navigate to a target, it’s not likely that the fish knew they were controlling a car. The researchers say that in the future it may be possible to change the FOV to test these ideas.
28. What did the researchers do before testing the goldfish?
A. They fed them. B. They numbered them.
C. They trained them. D. They weighed them.
29. How did the goldfish get their reward in the experiment?
A. By making the FOV move forward.
B. By avoiding the car being stuck.
C. By mixing the target’s colors.
D. By having the car reach the target.
30. What did the researchers discover about the goldfish?
A. They were born with the ability to remember.
B. They could recognize the color’s changes.
C. They were curious about new environments.
D. They could understand simple words.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Goldfish Learn to Drive on Land
B. Scientists Teach Fish Navigation Skills
C. Goldfish Know How to control the FOV
D. Scientists Help Goldfish Find Destinations

When answering a question, your silence might say more than your words. A new psychology study has found pausing before replying, even for just a few seconds, can make you seem more insincere or dishonest. That perception (感知) of dishonesty might not be too inaccurate, either. Numerous studies in the lab and in real life suggest people are slower to respond when they are not being truthful, possibly because it takes more mental work to block a truthful response or make up an alternative.
What’s been less clear is how well our lies have been fooling people. Some studies suggest delayed answers come across as insincere to the listener. Others find no relationship between the two, and still more have found the opposite: That a bit of hesitation increases our perception of sincerity. These findings are inconsistent and confusing. They are also mostly based on connection. Even the few studies that have actually looked at causal relationships often didn’t consider confusing factors that could also give away a liar or an insincere speaker.
The new research seeks to improve some of those limitations by examining thousands of people under a variety of conditions. Together, it involves more than 7,500 individuals from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France in a total of 14 experiments. On the whole, the authors found an immediate response was perceived as more sincere, while a delayed response, even a delay as brief as two seconds, was seen as more insincere.
“Evaluating other people’s sincerity is an important part of social interactions,” says consumer behavior researcher Ignazio Ziano. “It would be unfair for the responder, such as a crime suspect, if the response delay was mistakenly due to thought control or answer fabrication (捏造) when it was in fact caused by a different factor, such as simply being absent-minded or thoughtful,” explains Ziano.
Unfortunately, even when participants were instructed to ignore the response delays in one of the experiments, it only reduced their perception of insincerity; it did not completely remove it.
32. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. The perception of dishonesty depends on your silence.
B. Preparing a truthful response needs more mental work.
C. The impression of dishonesty isn’t always accurate.
D. Quicker replies to questions make you seem reliable.
33. According to paragraph 3, how do researchers carry out their research?
A. By studying the findings of several previous research projects.
B. By testing a lot of people in various situations.
C. By collecting data from the database from a new research.
D. By analyzing the circumstances of the responses involved.
34. Why does Ziano say it is unfair for the responder in paragraph 4?
A. Listeners should ignore the pauses.
B. A real criminal could escape quietly.
C. The responder may be judged wrongly.
D. The response delay affects people’s preference.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Slower Response Makes You Seem Insincere
B. New Evidence of Being Dishonest Is Found
C. Think Carefully Before You Answer
D. Action Speaks Louder Than Words

Mateo, a seven-year-old boy, was very interested after seeing the wooden box on the sidewalk. The sign on the front said “Little Free Library”. Luisa, Mateo’s older sister, told him that people build boxes and put books inside so other people can take books they want and add ones they’ve already read.
The idea excited Mateo and he decided to make his own so kids could trade books. But Luisa was worried that kids may not notice it. Mateo wanted to have a try anyway, and he asked Luisa to help him. Luisa agreed and went to Papa for tools, while Mateo ran inside to collect books.
With Papa’s help, they built a wooden box. They put a door on it and attached the box to a post. Then they dug a hole in their front yard and stuck the post into the hole. Mateo arranged the books inside the box and closed the door. “Now I just have to wait,” he said.
Mateo ran outside three times that day to check. But each time, his books were the only ones inside. For the next few days, Mateo kept checking the box, but his books were still there.
“No kids noticed it and no one wants to trade books,” Mateo said in low spirits, kicking at the pebbles in the path.
“I know you really wanted your idea to work, Mateo,” Luisa comforted him. “I’m sorry it didn’t.”
The next two days, Mateo didn’t check the box. Luisa went to his room to encourage him to take a look in case someone decided to trade, but Mateo refused and buried himself in the sheets. Reading his frustration, Luisa let out a sigh and walked out of the room.
