Dear Joseph,
Today you are ten years old. Everyone says it,but where has the time gone?
Life was quite hard after you were born, but I loved you with all of my heart. What I want to tell you now is how proud I am of the young man you have become.
You have overcome so many challenges and my heart is filled with pride each time—whether that be the continuing development of your speech and language, the way you progressed with your swimming, or your achievements in dance.
I recently asked a number of people who love you to think of a word they connect with you and I was surprised with their answers. Confident, kind, funny, lovely—to name but a few. I want you to remember these in years to come and if you ever have doubts about who you are.
You see, there is another word, autistic (患自闭症的),that people often use to describe you. If there is a time in the future when your understanding of the world around you has grown, I will explain to you what that actually means.
The way your brain works means that you see the world very differently from other people. You can't often say what you feel when you become upset. The things in disorder always trouble you.
You like having people around you, but friendship doesn't come easy. I know you have many people who enjoy your company, but you haven't quite yet worked out how to share those feelings.
At some point in the future, you will move to another school away from the people you have grown up with, but one where they can hopefully prepare you more for your adult life.
At last, I want to say,the most fitting word to describe you, out of all that were provided, was this—“perfect'"—you are and always will be.
Love,
Mummy.

What makes people gain weight? This seems like a simple enough question to answer. If we eat a lot and don't do enough exercise, we will become fat. However, the science behind weight problems is more complicated (复杂的) than we think.
As we know, what we eat greatly affects our weight. It is widely accepted that people have 100% control over what they eat and how much they eat. This, however, is only partly true. People form habits around food at a young age. You may hardly touch vegetables while overeating fried chicken. Meanwhile, the serving size and the background music can both affect how much we eat.
Our bodies themselves can decide whether we are more likely to gain weight or lose weight. Scientists have found that the more delicious the food is, the more excited our brains get. If we often have delicious food, over time, our brains will change. Compared to people of normal weight, fat people feel more excited when they see delicious food.
Now you know why fat people often have a tough time losing weight. They may have tried very hard, but their bodies are working against their will.
Also, our bodies use a variety of hormones (激素) to tell our brains whether they are hungry or full. Ghrelin (食欲刺激素),for example, tells the brain that the body wants food. Leptin(瘦蛋白) meanwhile, tells the brain that it's time to stop eating. Ghrelin and leptin help us to maintain a healthy weight. But sometimes, they may work improperly. As we get fatter, the levels of lepin in our bodies rise. Our brains are told not to cat all the time. In the end, they would no longer trust leptin and would stop responding to its "warnings." When we start to lose weight, leptin levels drop. Our brains think we are hungry and make us find food in our refrigerators.
23.It can be learnt from the passage that how much we eat can be affected by _____________.
①the amount of food we are served
②the music that is being played in the background
③the amount of weight we have recently gained or lost
④the habits around food we formed during our childhood
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
24.Compared to people of a healthy weight, fat people ____________.
A.are more likely to overeat meat
B.are less likely to touch vegetables
C.get bored with the food they don't like
D.feel more excited at the sight of delicious food
25.When ghrelin is working properly, it is responsible for ____________.
A.making us search for food
B.helping us to lose weight
C.showing us how to gain weight
D.telling our brains it's time to stop eating
26.After the levels of leptin have risen in the bodies of fat people, ___________.
A.those people lose weight easily in a short time
B.the levels of ghrelin in their bodies slowly drop
C.those people change their lifelong habits around food
D.the brains of those people finally stop taking notice of leptin's messages

"To be a musician, it's like fulfilling a part of your life that's irreplaceable. It's something that I love to do and get a satisfaction from it."
Born in 1925 in Louisiana, Renald Richard's memories of childhood are filled with music. At the age of six, Richard started piano lessons at home.
