Teaching analysis: | The materials are two diaries, which record Jane’s vacation. These diaries are kept in simple past tense, and followed the order of time. There are many details of Jane’s activities with her family and her feelings when doing these activities. Students have touched the form of simple past tense in the former class. So it will be easier for them to describe their personal experiences of vacation in simple past tense. |
Teaching procedure: | 1.Pre-reading:(5 minutes) Activity 1: Free talk The teacher asks students what they did and how they felt on Labor Day. T: Good morning students, Labor Day was over. How was your vacation? Did you go on a visit? Linda, please. S: I went to Thailand with my family. The trip was nice. T: What did do in Thailand? S: I walked on the beach and swam in the sea. T: That sounds wonderful. What about you, Susan? S: My vacation was terrible because I had to stay at home looking after my baby sister. T: You are warm-hearted. Now please talk about you Labor Day with your partner. What did you do and how did you feel? I will give you three minutes. (Justification: This activity arouse students’ interest to anticipate in the class and leads in today’s topic—vacation experiences.)
2.While-reading: Extensive reading: Activity 1: read and answer the questions. The teacher encourages students to read the whole passage and answer the questions. 1. Did Jane have a good time on Monday? What about Tuesday? 2. How did she really feel on these two days? T: Time is over. Today Jane wants to share her vacation with us. Now please read Jane’s two diaries quickly and answer the following questions. S: Jane had a good time on Monday and she felt exciting as if she was a bird. But on Tuesday, she didn’t have a good time and she felt terrible. (Justification: This activity helps students get a basic comprehension of the reading material.) Intensive reading: Activity 1: Read and fill in the blanks The teacher asks students to read the first diary and fill in the blanks. Weather: sunny and hot Activity: went to the beach, tried paragliding , had/tasted some special delicious noodles, rode bicycles to Georgetown, saw the house, enjoyed walking around the town (Justification: This activity will help students catch the details and the orderof Jane’s vacation on Monday. And the blanks are most for past tense, which consolidate students’ application.) Activity 2: True or false The teacher asks students to read the second diary and do true or false.
T: Read the part two carefully and judge these sentences are right or wrong. If they are wrong, please correct them. You can discuss with your partner. (Justification: This activity testifies whether students create a structure of comprehension.) Activity 3: Read and answer the question The teacher encourages students to read part two again and answer the question. Why did Jane say that what a difference a day makes? T: Why did Jane say that what a difference a day makes? Please read the passage again and try to find out the differences. S: on foot to take a train. waited for the train for over an hour didn’t have an umbrella or enough money couldn’t see anything below the hill only had one bowl of rice and some fish food tasted great T: Jane’s day was full of ups and downs. 3.Post-reading; Activity 1: Retell these two diaries T: According to your notes and memories, please retell Jane’s two days (Justification: This activity helps students review the whole passage and create a pattern of story by themselves.) Activity 2: Write a diary of your Labor Day and exchange it within your group. (Justification: This activity attains the outcome of what students have learned today.) |
Summary: | Labor Day was over. No matter how we felt on this vacation—happy or sorrowful, it is worth recording our memories in the diary. So try to form a habit of keeping a diary. |
