Teaching aims:

After learning the lesson, students will be able:

3. to know the importance and ways of protecting animals.

Teaching procedures:

Pre-reading:

Step 1. Lead in

      1. Using Beijing Olympics Mascot to lead into the new lesson, the teacher asks the following questions:

        (1) What are their names?

        (2) Which is Jingjing? What kind of animal is it from?

Step 2. Background information

1. About WWF:  play a video and ask students two questions.

(1) What does WWF do?

(2)Why did WWF choose the panda to be its symbol?

2. About the panda: watch the pictures and complete the tables.

While-reading:

Step 3. Read and match the main idea.

Read and match the main ideas with each paragraph.

Paragraph 1       ---a). Nature parks for pandas

Paragraph 2       ---b). WWF and animals in danger

Paragraph 3        ---c). The panda’s home

Paragraph 4        ---d). An animal in danger

Step 4. Read para1&2 and answer the questions.

      Why are pandas in danger?

      Reason 1: Pandas don’t have many babies, and baby pandas often die.

 Reason 2: Because the bamboo forests are getting smaller.

Step 5. Read para3&4 and fill in the blanks.

Post-reading:

Step 6. Watch and match

      Watch the video and match the two parts to make full sentences.

      Help students understand infinitives to do/to be.

Step 7. Read and think

      Encourage students to understand the structure of passage. The writer sets an example first to arouse readers’ awareness of protecting animals.

Step 8. Group work

      Choose an animal and make a poster for it together:

Some Americans are going to visit Hefei Zoo and Hefei Zoo is going to make some posters of animals to warmly welcome them. But the workers don’t know much English. Can you give them a hand?
