My younger daughter, Lauren, has a new car and she has managed to keep it spotlessly clean since she bought it in July.

Lauren’s old car was messy. It was essentially a large garbage dump on wheels. I must admit that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree because until I got my present car, all of my many automobiles had been messy too.

The worst thing about her car was that it took on water every time it rained. No one could ever find the source of the leak (漏洞), which created a pool on the floor of the front passenger side.

Four years ago, I got a new car. I turned over a new leaf and, for the first time since I got my driver’s license, cleaned up my act. I gave my old car, which contained old leaves, to my wife, who in turn gave her car to Lauren. It’s the one Lauren was driving – and filling with so much stuff that there was barely enough room in the back seat for her little dog, Maggie – until she got her new car.

A few weeks ago, Lauren decided to go car shopping. She went to a Volkswagen dealership because she had her eye on a Jetta. She had her other eye on my wallet.

Anyway, she saw a 2005 model, which was shown to her by an automotive associate named Anthony. He spent a lot of time with Lauren each of the three or four times she visited the dealership, let me test-drive the car when I went to see it, and didn’t put any pressure on any of us. In short, Anthony gave used car salesmen a good name.

But he was no match for Lauren when it came to negotiating the price, which he lowered to what she said she could afford and not a penny more.

So now, at 25, which is half the age I was when I cleaned up my act, Lauren has done the same. Her car has been clean for almost three months. Even the dog is impressed.

The downside is that my wife’s car is messy. And she wants a new one, too.

24Which of the following best explains the saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” underlined in paragraph 2?

AAn apple fell somewhere near from the tree, making Lauren’s car dirty.

BUntil 50, the author treated his cars the way Lauren treated her old car.

CThe author didn’t know why Lauren’s car was always so messy.

DIt’s common for many people not to keep their cars tidy and clean.

25What do we know about Lauren’s old car?

AProblems would be created by the leak in the car on rainy days.

BThere was something wrong with the front passenger side.

CIt was given to her by the author when he was 50 years old.

DIt was always over-packed and had no room for her little dog.

26What does this passage imply (暗含)?

ALauren bought her new car with her own money.

BAnthony was a good automotive associate who sells new cars.

CAnthony didn’t put any pressure on Lauren when she visited the dealership.

DIn the end, Lauren picked up her new car for a good price.

27What is the main idea of this passage?

AThe author’s daughter resembled him in all aspects of life.

BThe author taught his daughter how to keep her car clean.

CThe author’s family’s attitudes toward their old and new cars.

DHow the author’s family hungered for new cars.

    C

Every winter, huge crowds come to the parking lots of big box stores. Not crazy shoppers... but crows (乌鸦)

“Sometimes there’re 4,010,00 even 20,000 birds,” says Andrea Townsend, a behavioral ecologist at Hamilton College.” They’re really conspicuous. What they like are urban areas, so you’ll see them in trees, on rooftops, certainly, in well-lit parking lots. They’re their favorite places.”

Crows are known as “partial migrants (候鸟)”. Every year, some members of the population migrate between breeding (繁殖) grounds and overwintering grounds. But others just stay put. So Townsend and her colleagues wanted to know if that urge to migrate was something individual crows can turn on and off. With no previous studies to refer to, they caught 18 crows from overwintering spots to find out. They fitted the birds with little backpack satellite devices after collecting blood and feather samples, keeping recording where they went during winter for years.

Overall, three quarters of the birds migrated, an average of 300 miles. And more importantly, if they migrated once, they did it every year—suggesting traveling is not a habit they switch on and off. The researchers also found migrating crows returned faithfully to the same breeding grounds every year—but were more flexible on where to overwinter, which could be a good thing.

“Birds with flexible strategies can change their behavior when the environment changes, while other birds are more locked into their overwintering sites. They may not be able to adjust so quickly or easily to changing environmental conditions.” Townsend also wanted to know how migration is connected with their mental ability and whether it’s a mental trade-off for the birds—since migrants have to remember all location data.

“Maybe they’re not as good at solving problems as a resident bird that doesn’t have to invest so much in that long-term memory.” Then again, with all that time on the wing, migrants simply may not have as much free time to think hard about problems.

28What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in paragraph 2 mean?

    ADangerous. BSmart. CAnnoying. DNoticeable.

29How did the researchers get their finding?

ABy analyzing previous research. BBy tracking some crows’ movements.

CBy studying crows in urban areas. DBy comparing different migrating crows.

30What does paragraph 4 focus on?

ACrows’ migratory habits. BReasons for crows migrating.

CCrows’ behavioral changes. DWays of crows overwintering.

    31What might Townsend study next?

AProblem-solving skill and memory of crows. BImpact of the changing environment on crows.

CRelation between crows’ migration and mind. DDifferences between migrants and resident birds.

    D

The digital revolution has arrived. As automation becomes ever more common, even those professions once thought to be insulated from technological disruption(扰乱)face an uncertain future. Given that state of uncertainty, Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun argues that college graduates can no longer be confident that the job they hold will be financially sustainable for the long term. Automation, long a threat to low-skilled jobs, is now cost-effective in all repetitive work, including high-skilled jobs in health care, law, and research. Thus, for many the prospect of being replaced by a robot is more pressing.

To address this, it falls to higher education to prepare graduates for changes that are sweeping through the world of work. But how can institutions prepare the next generation, when it's not clear what professions will exist to employ them?

Aoun argues that universities must reinvent themselves to address this age of disruption and to provide their students with the educational foundation that ensures their employability in the coming decades. To do so, he calls for higher education to focus on those features that separate humans from machines. He named this new framework "Humanics".

Aoun details a two-tiered(两层的)structure for Humanics and explains how these tiers work together to develop creativity in students. The first tier consists of 21st-century literacies that he argues must be central to any forward-thinking educational program. In addition to reading, writing, and arithmetic, Aoun argues that all students must be competent in data interpretation and analysis, technical functions like engineering, and human-centric studies such as design thinking and communication.

This first tier of literacies forms the basis for Aoun's second tier of cognitive(认知的) capacities. Systems thinking, critical thinking, and cultural awareness constitute the mind-sets that Aoun argues are critical to distinguishing human employees from machines. A student with these mind-sets can solve problems creatively while making logical judgments.

Having defined what a robot-proof education must involve, Aoun looks into how that education should be offered and what colleges and universities must do to meet the needs of a modern student body. He calls for higher education to fully accept experiential, lifelong learning. He argues that it is only through rich experiences that students can apply their 21st-century literacies to complex problems, which will eventually shape their mind-sets. This type of learning must be lifelong because the rapid rate of change that accompanies automation will require that students consistently refresh their skill sets

Aoun acknowledges that education will never be a cure-all for society's ills. A more practical approach might be to see Humanics not as a new medicine but rather as a supplement to our current educational system.

In an automated world, to prepare for the economic disruption such automation may cause, higher education must create a generation of graduates that is liberated to think creatively while continuing to function in more traditional capacities. Perhaps that will ensure workers and the universities that educate them are indeed robot proof.

32What does the underlined word "insulated" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    AGenerated BSheltered CProhibited. DSeparated.

33What can we learn about automation from the first two paragraphs?

AIt has posed a threat to employment. BIt has made high-skilled jobs demanding.

CIt helps to fuel the process of digitalization. DIt promotes the development of new professions.

34According to Joseph Aoun, institutions should________.

Aset the trend for automation Bprovide a robot-proof education

Credefine the framework of Humanics Dvalue cognitive capacities over literacies

35What does the passage mainly discuss?

AWhere is automation leading us? BWhat does Humanics mean to universities?

CWhy is it critical to acquire higher education? DHow can we get ready for an uncertain future?

    第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

To help you understand what 5G is, and what it means to you, we’ve put together a handy guide here.

    What is 5G?

___36___At its most basic level, 5G will be used to make calls, send texts, and to simply get online. But it’s going to be significantly faster than previous generations, and could open the door up to a range of exciting new uses.

    ___37___

5G will use new higher radio frequencies to send out data, which are less cluttered(挤了)and carry information much faster. While these higher bands are faster, they don’t carry information as far. That’s to say, smaller multiple input and output antennas (天线)will be used—promoting both signals and capacity(容量).___38___

Why is it better than 4G?

5G is expected to be faster than 4G, with some firms claiming it could be as much as 100 times quicker. The fastest 4G networks can deliver peak download speeds of around 300 Mbit/s.____39____In real life, this could allow you to download a full HD film in less than 10 seconds!

___40___It means there will be very little—if any—delay when you carry out tasks on a device. While this will help improve things like gaming experiences, it could also pave the way for safer self-driving cars—in which even a short delay could be life-saving.

Finally, 5G will have a larger capacity, meaning networks will be able to deal with several apps at once. Generally, this should mean that devices have a faster, more stable connection. AHow does 5G work?

    BHow will 5G affect you?

C5G is also expected to have a lower latency.

D5G is short for “5th generation mobile network.”

EIn comparison, 5G could offer download speeds of over 1 Gb/s.

FTherefore, the similarity between 5G and 4G technology is huge.

GThis means 5G will support up to 1,000 more devices per meter than 4G.
