Readers’ Favorite Running Routes
Paul Ghent, Belgium
I love running in Ghent. It is completely flat, so encouraging for beginners and people aiming for personal bests. There is a rowing lake with a 5km track. This connects with a nature reserve on an 8km loop. If that isn’t enough, there is another nature reserve, full of birds and canals surrounded by a 10km loop. I will be running my first marathon in Ghent in March 2022. Anyone?
Jennifer Nice, France
In Nice Provence, I really enjoyed joining the local joggers running along what is one of the most beautiful streets in the world—the Promenade des Anglais. You have the fresh salty sea breezes filling your lungs, the sun shining on the waves of the sea, and the beautiful buildings standing along the running route. Feel free to grab some fresh shellfish and a glass of wine on the beach as a reward.
Lisa Offa, UK
The Offa’s Dyke path, which runs from Prestatyn to Chepstow, provides stunning scenery and is just perfect to focus on the run. The sections of the route I like the most include the slopes (坡地) of Moel Famau and the section from Llangollen to Bodfari, where there is an excellent pub (The Dinorben Arms) to refuel in comfort. Perfect.
Richard Protaras, Cyprus
My favorite route is in Protaras, Cyprus. There is a path that runs from Fig Tree bay to Polyxenia beach and you have wonderful views of the bays and beaches while running. The amazing clear seas and sandy beaches make it very pleasant. The best time to go is early morning when the sun isn’t blazing and the paths aren’t too busy with holidaymakers.
21.Which route best suits people who enjoy nature reserves?
A.Nice, France. B.Offa, UK.
C.Ghent, Belgium. D.Protaras, Cyprus.
22.What do the routes shared by Jennifer and Richard have in common?
A.They have beautiful streets. B.They have lovely sea views.
C.They are famous for seafood. D.They are fit for morning runners.
23.Where can the text be found?
A.In a science paper. B.In a history novel.
C.In a sports magazine. D.In a geography textbook.

Paparella first became aware of foster care(寄养中心)in elementary school when her parents were considering adopting a child. The plan didn’t work out, but Paparella often found herself thinking about that girl.
At 16, Paparella visited Summit County Children Services in Akron, Ohio, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What do these young people need most?” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home!” say Paparella. The idea of moving into an apartment and not having a bed to sleep on or a sofa to sit on pulled at my heartstrings.
Paparella contacted her parents’ friends, asking if they had spare furniture to donate. A local furniture store, Chez-Del Interiors, offered free warehouse space and its delivery truck. Social workers provided delivery. In between lacrosse games and college applications, Paparella --with her dad’s help --added furniture delivery person to her résumé.
Watching the receiver’s faces when they receive a bed, a couch-whatever-would change her in a way. Paparella remembers delivering a gold lamp to a woman and watching her polish it lovingly, getting rid of dust and fingerprints. To think that this lamp which hadn’t been thought about in years now brought so much happiness to somebody was amazing.” Paparella says.
Today, Paparella has given furniture to nearly 200 young adults across six Ohio counties. As word has gotten out, Paparella has received donations from people who have bought new furniture and want to get rid of their old pieces. People who are moved, and people who have heard of her work on social networking sites. She’s convinced these contributions give the receivers hope and confidence.
24.Why did Paparella visit Summit County Children Services?
A.She considered adopting a child.
B.She planned to take care of the children there.
C.She wanted to know the life of grow-ups there.
D.She intended to persuade her parents to help the children.
25.What does the underlined sentence “That struck home!” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Moving. B.Shocking. C.Amusing. D.Disappointing.
26.What do we know about the woman who received a gold lamp?
A.She didn’t like the dusty old lamp.
B.She loved the gold lamp very much.
C.She made little difference to Paparella.
D.She owned many different lamps in the past.
27.Which word can best describe Paparella’s character?
A.Humorous. B.Honest. C.Imaginative. D.Devoted

The most popular martial arts today originated in Asia, especially in China. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for self-defense.
Martial arts are often referred to as either soft or hard. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent’s force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent's force to defend yourself. Soft styles use flowing movements and timing to avoid their opponent’s attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force. Techniques involve blocking, posturing and powerful hitting and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.
Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 4th century, a community of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities — one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours.
In fact, Chinese influence in martial arts was not limited to kung fu. The very first Korean military training guidebook was based on a Chinese version. During the Japanese invasion of Korean in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of troops. They adopted a training methodology from a Chinese military book called Ji Xiao Xin Shu, written by the famous Chinese general, Qi Jiguang.
28.Why did people invent martial arts?
A.For keeping fit. B.For self-defence.
C.For competition. D.For attacking others.
29.Which is the character of soft martial arts?
A.Using violence to attack others.
B.Attacking your opponent's weakness.
C.Using smooth action to defend yourself from damage.
D.Defending yourself with powerful hitting and kicking.
30.Who spread Karate?
A.Chinese army. B.Korean military. C.Japanese troops. D.Chinese migrants.
31.Why did Korean army adopt a training methodology from Ji Xiao Xin Shu?
A.To train soldiers. B.To keep soldiers fit.
C.To attend cultural activities. D.To show admiration for Qi Jiguang
D
In a conversation with an acquaintance, your brain might skip ahead, anticipating the words that the other person will say. Perhaps then you will cry out whatever comes to mind. Or maybe you will nurse your guess quietly, waiting to see if — out of all the hundreds of thousands of possibilities — your conversational partner will arrive at the same word you have been thinking of. Amazingly, your companion will often do so.
How does the brain do this? Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers brought a new take to the quest ion using a technique called integrative modeling. They compared dozens of machine-learning algorithms called neural networks to brain scans and other data. The researchers had a two-part goal: they wanted to figure out how the brain processes language and in doing so. expand on what machine-learning algorithms can teach us about the brain.
The modeling technique shows that a key role may be played by next-word prediction. which is central to algorithms such as those that suggest words as you write your texts and e-mails. The researchers discovered that models that expert at next-word prediction are also best at anticipating brain activity patterns and reading times. So it seems like these models are not just useful for presenting the word “want” after you have typed “do you” — or for allowing computers to complete any number of tasks from behind the scenes. They may all offer a window into how your brain makes sense of the flood of words coming out of your friend’s mouth.
The researchers claim that this study marks the first time that a machine-learning algorithm has been matched to brain data to explain the workings of a high-level cognitive task. The finding suggests that predictive processing is central to how we understand language and proves how artificial neural networks can offer key insights into cognition.
“I did not think this would happen in my lifetime.” says Evelina Fedorenko, a cognitive neuroscientist at M. I. T. “These models are much better than I would have predicted, relative to human neural data. That just opens up all sorts of doors.”
32.What will happen in a conversation with your friend according to paragraph 1?
A.Your mind will be blank. B.Your friend will be silent.
C.You will have much to say. D.You will get what you predict.
33.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The foundation of modeling. B.The heart of algorithms.
C.The process of modeling. D.The methods of algorithms.
34.Which is the best title for the text?
A.The Brain Guesses What Words Come Next
B.Integrative Modelings Affect How Conversations Go
C.Artificial Neural Networks Teach Humans How the Brain Works
D.Machine-learning Algorithms Explain Why the Brain Has High Cognition
35.What is probably the text continued with?
A.Wider survey of human neural data. B.More introduction to human neural data.
C.Further study about the integrative models. D.Deeper explanation of high-level cognition.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was last August. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools.
Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.
My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.
It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.

Text 10
My way to stay young is simple: Give full attention to the part of you that’s young and growing---your brain. Keep your mind active and your body will stay young, too. These are exciting times. Take an interest in the world around you, and make a point of learning one new thing every day.
Never think about your age, it’s not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a house wife who became a famous industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid artist.
Get over the idea that you are too old to go back to college. I know I man who entered medical school at 70. He got his degree with honors and became a top doctor. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer.
Even if you are getting on in years, staying young is easy for those who live for the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind alive and active; this is the key to staying young, and it will certainly work.

So it seems like these models are not just useful for presenting the word “want” after you have typed “do you” — or for allowing computers to complete any number of tasks from behind the scenes. They may all offer a window into how your brain makes sense of the flood of words coming out of your friend’s mouth.(该建模技术表明,下词预测可以发挥关键作用。 故选A。

Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse. In fact, by the time I climbed down the rocks and my husband pulled Wyatt out of the water, she had already called 911. She put a red, white, and blue towel under Wyatt's head. She told us to keep him still and on his back in case he had injured his bones. I finally had time to ask her name. “Lisa,” she said. “And I'm not leaving you.”
The rescue team finally came. They took Wyatt out of the park to the nearest hospital. Wyatt had three broken bones and a wound in lung—injuries that sound terrible but recover on their own. As soon as I knew that Wyatt was going to be OK, my thoughts fell to Lisa. If she had not stepped up, would someone else have done so? Perhaps. But it was her. She was the one who went toward the unthinkable instead of turning away.
