Over the course of the pandemic (流行病), the landscape of education has greatly changed, but that hasn’t kept one brilliant girl whose dreams have never been earthbound from reaching for the stars.
While most pre-teens are facing the challenges of middle school, at age 12, Alena Analeigh has already earned her high school diploma and is set to attend Arizona State University via remote learning in May.
With a planned double major in astronomical science and chemistry, Alena’s goal is to become a NASA engineer by the time she’s 16, where she hopes to employ her extraordinary skills to build rovers (火星车) like the ones sent to Mars on missions.
“I’ll be driving one of those future space mobiles by the time I graduate from college,” she told ABC News. A distant goal, perhaps. But according to Alena’s mother, Daphne, her daughter had already set her sights on a career with the space agency when she was a little girl. “She would always say, ‘Mom, I’m going to work for NASA,’” Daphne told ABC News. “Then she would start saying, ‘I’m going to be the youngest Black girl to ever work for NASA.’”
Alena’s space journey began with her early interest in Lego building toys, from which she built complex models of everything from the Taj Mahal and the Disney castle to the Apollo 11 rover and a NASA rocket. While building Lego toys, she learned to bring her imaginations to completion. That is mainly what enables this talent to get closer and closer to her life goal, and her smart scientific mind has led Alena to be a sharp observer in other fields of life as well.
Alena sees the difference in STEM (short for science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities for women and people of color. She hopes to serve as an example to other girls — they shouldn’t let the opinions of others keep them from going after their own dreams. “It doesn’t matter what your age is or what you’re planning to do,” she told ABC News. “Go for it, dream and then achieve it.”
24.How is Alena different from most pre-teens?
A.She attends high school via remote learning.
B.She is already qualified for higher education.
C.She has got the chance to set foot on Mars.
D.She teaches her friends to build rover models.
25.What does Alena’s mother say about Alena’s career goal?
A.It took root very early. B.It sounds unrealistic.
C.It was once destroyed. D.It proves challenging.
26.What can we learn about Alena from paragraph 5?
A.She has designed best-selling toys. B.Her enthusiasm for Lego toys fades.
C.She likes traveling around the world. D.Her interest prepares her for her life goal.
27.Which of the following can best describe Alena?
A.Popular and proud. B.Caring and generous.
C.Ambitious and inspiring. D.Intelligent and modest.

Honda is developing an in-shoe navigation (导航) system to support the visually impaired (受损的) with walking, and it could be a game-changer.
The Ashirase is a navigation system consisting of a smartphone app and a three-dimensional device including a motion sensor, which is attached inside the shoe. Based on the route set with the app, the device vibrates (振动) to provide navigation. When the user should go straight, the vibrator positioned on the front part of the foot vibrates, and when the user is approaching a right or left turn, the vibrator on the right or left side vibrates to notify the user.
The navigation provided by Ashirase enables the user to understand the routes more easily, and thus the user does not have to be constantly mindful of the direction, which makes it possible for the user to walk more safely and with a more relaxed state of mind. Having navigation provided through vibration on the foot is also useful in that it does not bother the user’s hand which is holding a walking stick, or ears used to listen to surrounding sounds.
Why is a company known for its automobiles getting involved in this area? Because it matters. In Japan alone, the number of people with visual impairment including low vision was estimated to be 1. 64 million as of 2007, and the number is forecast to increase to nearly 2 million by 2030.
With the concept of “navigation which enables safety and a relaxed state of mind for the visually impaired”, Ashirase is being developed as a product which helps the visually impaired reach their destinations safely and have a more independent lifestyle.
Wataru Chino, a designer at Honda, said, “I am sure that we will face many challenges as we work toward the market launch of Ashirase; however, we’re bound to overcome them to realize the freedom of mobility for visually impaired people.”
28.What does the underlined word “notify” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Protect. B.Assess. C.Inform. D.Stop.
29.What does paragraph 3 focus on concerning Ashirase?
A.Its benefits for its users. B.Its working principles.
C.Its potential challenges. D.Its future improvements.
30.Why does Honda choose to develop the navigation system?
A.Most Japanese people expect the company to do so.
B.The company has trouble developing new automobiles.
C.There is an increasing demand from the visually impaired.
D.The company determines to prevent more visual impairment.
31.What do Wataru Chino’s words suggest?
A.He is confident to make the system accessible.
B.He believes the system will earn much money.
C.He is worried about the future market potential.
D.He finds developing the system less challenging.

Chinese astronauts conducted a science lecture to millions of students on Dec. 9, 2021 from the Tiangong space station. The three astronauts, Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, showed life in space and conducted experiments in microgravity.
It was the first lecture of the Tiangong Class, China ’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series. Its goal is to popularize space science.
“The laboratory of the space station has many conditions that the Earth laboratory does not have, such as the environment of weightlessness and radiation, ” said Wen Xin, a professor at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He said that important jobs for astronauts in the space station include cell observation and maintaining plant life.
In the lecture, Ye demonstrated experiments related to cell growth in a weightless environment. He compared the growth and shape of cells in artificial gravity and zero-gravity to study their changing principles in space.
Another experiment in the space lecture was shown by Wang Yaping. She illustrated how a paper flower “bloomed” on the surface of water in Tiangong space station. She explained that the surface tension of water is magnified (放大) in space due to zero gravity.
One of the examples of surface tension on Earth is that some insects can “walk” on water. They use surface tension to “stand” instead of falling through water.
Surface tension plays a key role in product development. Researchers around the world are measuring surface tension to improve the quality of their products, according to Biolin Scientific, a science company. Paints are tailored to stick better on the surfaces they are applied to. Surface tension also has impacts in drug development.
Although the astronauts are thousands of miles away, their research does influence our life. Shi Yi, a teacher at the Beijing No. 101 Middle School, told China Daily that the space lecture was “an eye-opening experience that would arouse students’ interest in science”.
32.What makes the space laboratory special?
A.It is operated by a professor.
B.It has a unique experiment environment.
C.It broadcasts experiments to students.
D.It promotes cell growth.
33.What can we learn through Ye’s cell experiment in space?
A.The rules of cell growth. B.The secret in a weightless environment.
C.The conditions of cell growth. D.The differences between the universe and the earth.
34.What can we say about surface tension?
A.It can speed up flower blooming. B.It is related to product quality.
C.Paints have an influence on it. D.Drugs are used to measure it.
35.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Special Laboratory Environments B.Examples of Surface Tension
C.Learning from Space D.Lectures about Cells

Kumar was a hard-working and ambitious student in Academic Magnet High School, who had a preference for the engineering design. One day he was walking home from school. Nothing pleased him more than to walk along the busy street and look at the glass doors of the shops. When doing so, he never failed to stop to look at the latest laptops in the computer shop. He was thinking. “I would love so much to own that laptop. But nobody will buy it for me.”
So Kumar thought hard of what to do. The school holiday was coming up next week. An idea struck him. He would do odd jobs to earn some money. Yes! That was what he would do.
His house is next to East Lake shore Drive in Chicago, where there stand varieties of cottages with beautiful gardens. It follows that he designed a plan of working in his neighbors’ gardens. First, he would approach them and ask them to let him clean up their gardens. After his finishing the job. each owner would probably pay him $50 or $ 60. Working in more than ten gardens would enable him to accumulate enough cash to buy his beloved laptop. Making up his mind triggered a feeling of joy and a brisk walk home.
The next day. he went around his neighborhood and asked the residents if he could clean their gardens. He asked them politely. “Excuse me. can I work in your garden during the school holiday?” Many of the owners were kind of curious about what Kumar was requiring and asked why. Having known about his thirsty for a laptop, they all replied “Yes”. They liked the courteous (有礼貌的) boy.
So Kumar started working in his first house. He woke up early that morning. He took three hours to clear the rubbish and cut the grass. It was not easy work. He had to mow the grass. After that, he had to pull the weeds. Then, he had to arrange the flowerpots. This arduous (艰巨的) work went on for a week. Consequently, he had no time for games or even watching television.
