根据第一段中“She loves the experience of gaining new knowledge and also loves sharing it with others. (她喜欢获得新知识的经历,也喜欢与他人分享。)”以及她所说的话“I’ve taken so many Udemy courses, and ifs such a great feeling to get my brain working again. I find just as much satisfaction in teaching animation too. Passage 2(2021•天津3月卷•第56—60题)
I’ve always been creative since I was a little girl. My childhood was filled with arts, crafts (手工) and music, and every day was an exciting adventure of creation.
Somewhere along the way, however, I lost touch with my creative self. At 21, I landed a job at a big insurance company out of my business degree. I would go to the office, sit at my desk and repeat the same work five days a week 9 to 5. The days were long and tedious. Working this way for one year was painful enough, let alone a lifetime. Before long I decided to make a change.
One thing I had developed an interest in was sewing, so I took a sewing course at a community college. It was only a five-week course but it awakened my interest and got my confidence up.
As I dreamt bigger, I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. I attended classes two nights a week. Although exhausting, it gave me energy, enthusiasm and happiness.
As it became clearer that fashion was what I wanted to do full time, the reality of my day-to-day work at the insurance company became harder. I felt bored. No energy, no motivation and zero fulfilment (满足感).
I knew I needed to make a bigger change. After struggling for quite a while, I made a difficult decision—leaving my job and studying my design course full time. Two years later I got my diploma.
The last few years have been exciting because I’ve been following my heart to do what I love. Today I am living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand.
Sometimes it’s hard to make a change, but I’m so glad I set the wheels of change in motion with that very small first step because it has led me to where I am today.

Passage 3(2020•
As any younger brother will tell you, having a big brother involves a lot of walking in someone else’s shadow, especially when you have a brother who is a typical example of “cool”. For years I wanted to do everything my elder brother Tyson did, but no matter how hard I tried, I was always the neglected (被忽略的) one. My legs just weren’t made to run like his. I could never play football or basketball well.
I probably would have continued trying to keep up with him for the rest of my high school career, but when my family moved, everything changed. Tyson left for college, so I had to start at a new school all by myself. This new start gave me an opportunity to redefine myself and discover an entirely new version of “cool”.
I don’t know what made me decide to try some new activities at the new school, but one day I chanced to show up for an after-school meeting of the Science Olympiad team. I had always been fascinated with chemistry, biology, and math, but since those interests hadn’t fit Tyson’s definition of “cool”, I had never pursued them. On this day, for some reason, I did.
As we organized teams, prepared resources and practiced answering questions, I felt more connected than I ever had to any sports team. I didn’t feel as though I needed to keep up with anybody else; I was finally with peers who understood me. It was so good to feel accepted for what I’m good at. For the first time in my life, I actually felt cool. Now I know who I am! I’m Tyson’s little brother, but that’s only part of my identity. I’m a cool guy in my own way, too. I’m relieved to know that “cool” has a much broader definition than what I used to think.
56. How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 1? (no more than 8 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________57. What changes offered a new start to the author after his family moved? (no more than 15 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________58. According to Paragraph 3, what marked the turning point in the author’s growth? (no more than 7 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________59. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________60. What is your example of “cool”? Please explain why. (no more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
56. Receiving less attention than someone else.
Or: Being/Feeling less successful than someone else.
Or: Being/Feeling neglected.
57. That his brother left for college and he changed schools.
Or: Tyson’s leaving for college and the author’s going to/attending a new school.
58. Joining the Science Olympiad team.
Or: That he joined the Science Olympiad team.
Or: Discovering his true interests (in science).
59. (How) the author discovered a broader definition of “cool”.
Or: He has discovered his own way to be cool.
Or: He found his own identity.
60. Playing football well is cool because I can show how strong I am.
Or: Playing the piano is cool because it can give me joy.
Or: Helping the poor is cool because it can give them hope and bring me pleasure.
As any younger brother will tell you, having a big brother involves a lot of walking in someone else’s shadow, especially when you have a brother who is a typical example of “cool”. For years I wanted to do everything my elder brother Tyson did, but no matter how hard I tried, I was always the neglected one. I was always the neglected one可推测,划线部分的意思是“得不到关注/被忽略”。故填:Receiving less attention than someone else.
Or: Being/Feeling less successful than someone else.
Or: Being/Feeling neglected.
根据第二段的but when my family moved, everything changed. Tyson left for college, so I had to start at a new school all by myself. That his brother left for college and he changed schools.
Or: Tyson’s leaving for college and the author’s going to/attending a new school.
I had always been fascinated with chemistry, biology, and math, but since those interests hadn’t fit Tyson’s definition of “cool”, I had never pursued them. On this day, for some reason, I did. Joining the Science Olympiad team.
Or: That he joined the Science Olympiad team.
Or: Discovering his true interests (in science).
Now I know who I am! I’m Tyson’s little brother, but that’s only part of my identity. I’m a cool guy in my own way, too. I’m relieved to know that “cool” has a much broader definition than what I used to think.(现在我知道我是谁了! (How) the author discovered a broader definition of “cool”.
Or: He has discovered his own way to be cool.
Or: He found his own identity.
Playing football well is cool because I can show how strong I am.
Or: Playing the piano is cool because it can give me joy.
Or: Helping the poor is cool because it can give them hope and bring me pleasure.
Passage 4(2020•
I remember the day shyness took over my life. I was 14 and having a French lesson The teacher told us to record ourselves speaking about a holiday. Perfect! I recorded myself with confidence. Then, I pressed "play" to listen back. All I heard was a little kid talking. My immediate reaction was to assume I was listening to someone else's recording. But that was my voice. I realised there was something strange about me.
My little voice has made me feel really shy. And my shyness has caused me to avoid attending events, not make important connections, and keep my ideas to myself. As a shy person, working from home, hiding behind my computer was brilliant. But the more time I spent hidden away, the more my comfort zone shrank(缩小). Everyday interactions, like ordering a coffee, became increasingly awkward and uncomfortable.
And then, one day I was at a big conference and it suddenly hit me like lightning. All speakers were confident, comfortable with being seen. There were no quieter voices. But the trouble is, if the loud voices are the only ones you hear, we quiet people feel even more alienated(疏远的)。 The world needs a mixture of personalities. Success is not just about who can shout the loudest. The world needs quieter people, too. That day I chose to stop hiding and embrace my shyness. No more feeling like I needed to change who I am in order to succeed. No more living a small life.
Then I created the Shy and Mighty Society, a space for shy people like me to shine, and in the process of helping others, I could also push myself forward, bit by bit. Now, I'm happy to tell people I feel shy. I'm not ashamed any more. And I know that I’m not alone.
56. Why did the author feel strange about herself after listening to the recording? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
57. What is the main idea of Para.2? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
58. What does the underlined word in Para.3 mean? (1 word)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
59. Why did the author create the Shy and Mighty Society? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
60. Suppose you are in charge of the Shy and Mighty Society, what will you do to help other shy people? And why? (no more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________

57. Her shyness had a/an(bad) influence/effect/impact on her(life)
Or: Her shyness kept her hidden away.
Or: Her shyness kept her away from other people.
58. Accept.
Or: Welcome.
59. To help shy people(to shine) and push herself forward.
Or: To help other shy people and herself.
60. I will organize a speech contest so that they can walk out of their comfort zone and become more confident.
Or: I will share my experience with them, telling them how I handle my shyness.
Or: I will encourage them to take part in various activities to improve their social skills.
根据第一段“I pressed "play" to listen back. All I heard was a little kid talking. My immediate reaction was to assume I was listening to someone else's recording. But that was my voice. I realised there was something strange about me.” Because her voice was different from what she had expected. Or: Because all she heard was a little kid talking. Or: Because of her little voice.
根据第二段“My little voice has made me feel really shy. And my shyness has caused me to avoid attending events, not make important connections, and keep my ideas to myself. As a shy person, working from home, hiding behind my computer was brilliant. But the more time I spent hidden away, the more my comfort zone shrank(缩小).” Her shyness had a/an(bad) influence/effect/impact on her(life). Or: Her shyness kept her hidden away. Or: Her shyness kept her away from other people.
上句提到“The world needs a mixture of personalities. Success is not just about who can shout the loudest. The world needs quieter people, too.” 根据“That day I chose to stop hiding”可知作者选择不再躲藏,接受自己的害羞。 Accept. Or: Welcome.
根据最后一段“Then I created the Shy and Mighty Society, a space for shy people like me to shine, and in the process of helping others, I could also push myself forward,”可知作者创建Shy and Mighty Society是为了给像自己一样害羞的人发光的空间,在帮助别人的过程中,也可以推动自己一点点前进。 To help shy people(to shine) and push herself forward. Or: To help other shy people and herself.
I will organize a speech contest so that they can walk out of their comfort zone and become more confident. Or: I will share my experience with them, telling them how I handle my shyness. Or: I will encourage them to take part in various activities to improve their social skills.
Passage 1(2022
I love beautiful scenery as much as others do,but I have always focused downwards wherever I walk. I love finding unexpected treasures — the habit likely goes back to my childhood. Even today, I engage in this obsession while walking the dog up and down the river park, Don Valley.
In January 2019, a few days after an unusually heavy snowfall, I was struggling through the Don Valley as usual with my dog. Snow days are not the best for treasure hunting, so I was surprised to see a shiny gold beneath the snow near the bottom of a hill. I carefully took out a ring decorated with a Cartier logo.I walked into the local coffee shop nearby to see if anybody had reported lost jewelry. Sadly, they had no news,so I headed home to print up flyers(传单) to post around the neighborhood. I also tried a local Facebook group.
I waited and waited but nobody called to lay claim to my small treasure. After putting it on the shelf, I eventually forgot all about it. That is, until many months later when our daughter Katie came back home for holiday. She happened to see the ring when reaching a book. With far better eyesight, she soon noticed the tiny letters on the inside of the ring that read, “Omar and Yoshi.” It was so obviously important to them. I promise to do whatever I could to track down this couple.
We searched through years of wedding notices but there was nothing on record for those two names. Frustrated (感到沮丧), I began to give up hope, then had one last thought: why not call Cartier stores in the city? I called one store. An understandably confused gentleman listened to my story, went silent for a moment and then stated that the ring was totally untraceable He apologized, and I was about to hang up when he suddenly asked if I had found a name on the ring. I told him just the first name, Omar.
“Omar?” he said excitedly. “Omar and Yoshi?”
After nearly a whole year, I finally made it to return my small treasure to Omar and Yoshi.

Until last January. I was very much a prose (散文) writer. I loved to write short stories but couldn’t stand poetry because it seemed like a lazy version. But then I entered a local poetry competition and won a prize. I read my poem at the award ceremony, and received a positive reaction from the audience. It was then that I realized poetry was much more interesting and diverse than I had previously thought, and that maybe I wasn’t too bad at writing it.
Since February. I have been trying to write poetry as often as possible, and it proves that somehow I like it now. Poetry isn’t a lazier version of prose, but it can be an easier one.
I met Mrs. Sase in my senior year of high school. I was struggling greatly in her math class. On top of always struggling with math, I was dealing with the anxiety that came with being a foster youth and worrying deeply about the future that lay in store for me. I had been living with my foster parents (养父母), and our agreement was that after graduation I was to move out and begin my life as an adult to support myself, at seventeen.
What accompanied the burden of the anxiety was a lack of motivation in school. Most teachers didn’t notice me. Mrs. Sase, however, took a closer look. I will never forget the first time she walked over to my desk and handed me a little folded note. It read, “Are you okay?”
I was shocked by her genuine care and interest in my well-being. Not only was she sensitive enough to notice my reserve, but she also took the time to personally make a difference. She listened as I shared my most hidden fears about my past and the uncertain future that was closing in on me. She listened when others seemed to be too busy to show concern. And she agreed to write a letter of recommendation for me when I decided to apply for the Guardian Scholars Program, a program committed to helping ambitious, college-bound students exit the foster care system.
I found new ambition through Mrs. Sase’s support and devotion to my academic and personal success. Gradually, not only did my grades improve, but my confidence also improved.
The most amazing thing about Mrs. Sase was that I was just one of an army of students who would confess that Mrs. Sase had changed their lives. Her entire classroom was filled with letters of utmost appreciation for her and the life-changing impact she had on so many students.

To make matters worse, I recalled my failure again and again, which put more pressure on me than I could bear. As a result, I was always feeling down during class time.

All the pains and the embarrassing things we experience are part of the process. So keep up your spirit! At last, he added, “If you are optimistic, things you want may happen to you!”
Warmth rushed through my soul. I suddenly found the sun shining again when I stepped out of his office.
With the teacher’s help, I eventually got over my depression. From then on, I no longer bowed my head and began smiling to my classmates. I would put up my hand confidently in class and play with my new friends in my spare time. Meanwhile, I was gradually embraced by my classmates.
Now faced with fierce competition, we all study hard because we know that every second counts. Moreover, there is an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect between us. I love my class; I love my classmates!

It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can't I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. 第一段中“However, he did not lose his determination to lead a full and active life.”(然而,他并没有失去过充实而积极的生活的决心。) Determination. It is determination that can lead one to overcoming all difficulties and become successful.
Passage 4
Cao Yuan proved he was special at age 14 when he was enrolled in the University of Science and Technology of China’s School of the Gifted Young, which is a special school to nurture
teenagers into world-class talents.
But Cao himself didn’t think he was special. He often stressed that he was just an ordinary kid who loved reading about science and doing experiments.
But there is other evidence that Cao is a bit different. On Dec 19,the now 22-year-old doctoral candidate in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT),US,was named one of the 10 people who mattered this year by the journal Nature. It was for discovering a“magic angle”in graphene(石墨烯)sheets that he has opened up a new field of superconductor physics(超导体物理学).
Graphene, first discovered in 2004, is a material made of a single layer of carbon atoms. It’s the thinnest and strongest material in the world. Cao’s work shows that when two layers of graphene are cooled to 1.7 C above absolute zero(-273 C)and rotated(旋转) to a “magic angle”of 1.1 degrees, the upper layer of graphene exhibits nonconducting behaviors.
However, Cao found that these electrons(电子) could flow in the graphene sandwich freely — as if they were traveling through a superconductor —when small amounts of electrons were added to the structure.
The discovery is exciting. “One can imagine making a superconducting transistor out of graphene, which you can switch on and off , from superconducting to insulating” , Pablo Jarillo-Herrero,Cao’s professor at MIT,told Science Daily.
But why was Cao able to make the discovery? Both his high school physics teacher Huang Jiatang and Jarillo-Herrero attribute it to Cao’s capacity for independent learning and interest in doing experiments.
Huang said that he remembered that as a young kid Cao had a strong ability to study on his own, a love for hands-on experiments and was unafraid to challenge teachers and ask difficult questions.
Cao seems to be a highly inquisitive young man. Jarillo-Herrero told Nature that Cao’s hobbies include photographing the night sky using homemade cameras. “Every time I go in Cao's office, it’s a huge mess, with computers taken apart and pieces of telescope all over his desk,” he said.
But even with such convincing proof, Cao still sees himself as an ordinary college student. “After all, we are all humans, with flaws and emotions,” he said.
