Fun Activities for Children That Are Stuck Inside
    Make Your Own Clothes
There are plenty of things you can do to improve your regular clothes. While you might want to use a cheap white T-shirt, there’s so much you can do to it. You can use tie-dye (手工扎染), spin art, or fabric markers to create your own unique clothes. All of the other students will be jealous (嫉妒) that their parents aren’t as fun as you!
    Bring the Outdoors Inside
Something a lot of kids like to do, even if it is just in the yard, is camping. It’s a good way for children to enjoy something out of the usual while they’re also using their imagination. So, if you’re in a situation where you’re stuck inside, bring the feeling of camping indoors. You can do this by setting up a real tent. You can also make traditional camping food inside to really feel like you’re out in the wilderness!
    Have an Indoor Treasure Hunt
If you are having a treasure hunt, whether it’s inside or outside, you and your young ones are sure to have fun. Choose things around your house and write them down as a list on a piece of paper. Then, let your little ones run around the house to see who can collect all of the things first. Don’t forget to give the players a special prize once they have found all of the things.
Fingerprint Art Is Always a Hit
One of the extremely popular arts to do inside is known as fingerprint art. Children put their fingers in paint and place them on a piece of paper. They can then draw on and around their fingerprint to create whatever they feel like. Furthermore, there are also books on how to make a variety of fingerprint art in the form of animals that could be fun for children to learn as well!

In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp(竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different sized drinking glasses, each filled with water.
Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations. Jamey Turner is 78 years old. Turner became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner always uses low-priced glass because it sounds better than costly crystal(水晶) and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing his finger over the top of them.
The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making its music.
19.What do visitors think of Jamey Turner's performance?
    A.Boring. B.Attractive. C.Special. D.Common.
20.How can Jamey Turner change the sounds of the glasses?
A.By beating the glasses in different parts. B.By placing the glasses on a wooden board.
C.By adding or reducing water in the glasses. D.By holding different glasses with rubber bands.
21.What may be Jamey Turner's real worry about the glass harp?
A.Little music is written for the instrument.
B.People are trying to play the instrument online.
C.Few people are playing the instrument these days.
D.The instrument cannot produce some beautiful sounds.
22.What is the best title for this text?
A.Making Music by Playing Glasses B.Special Sounds from Glasses
C.Devotion to Playing Glasses for Fun D.Fingers over the Tops of the Glasses
According to the World Economic Forum(WEF), eight million tons of plastic waste is being poured out into the oceans every year. That's the equivalent (相等物)of an entire garbage truck being dumped every three minutes, and the source of the problem—the world's cities. In Amsterdam, a simple solution has been found that could stop up to 86 percent of plastic waste ever reaching the oceans—a barrier made of bubbles (气泡).
The way the bubble barrier system works is basically that it is a tube placed diagonally (沿对角线地)on the bottom of the waterway. "The tube has a lot of tiny holes," according to Phillip Ehrhorn, Chief Technology Officer in The Great Bubble Barrier, "We pump air through it, and the air bubbles will rise towards the surface. The plastics are brought to the surface with the air bubbles and then, with the natural flow of the river, towards one side of the river." Then the other part of the bubble barrier system collects and removes the waste.
"Ship traffic is a key economic driver;we won't be able to stop that. So, we would have to find a solution which would not affect all the other existing activities and the ecosystem," Phillip added. The bubble barrier does exactly that. While it provides no block to water traffic and sea life can pass through freely, it also catches plastic waste of all sizes.
The Great Bubble Barrier is trying to work together with Amsterdam and local Non-governmental Organizations(NGOs)to evaluate what the bubble barrier system is catching so as to carry out new policies and additional measures on land. In this way, plastics entering the water could be reduced in the first place. "Our next step is a bubble barrier within Europe and we, of course, want to move to Asia because we think we can make a lot of influence there." said Francis Zoet, the founder of The Great Bubble Barrier.
23.What contributes to the invention of the bubble barrier?
A.Suggestions from the WEF. B.Large amounts of sea waste.
C.Construction of the waterway. D.Requests from the government.
24.What is the function of the air bubbles?
A.Creating tiny holes on the tube. B.Removing the waste in the water.
C.Sending plastics to the surface. D.Changing the speed of the river flow.
25.What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A.The waste B.Ship traffic. C.Sea life. D.The bubble.
26.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Plastics entering the water will increase. B.The city will evaluate the bubble barrier.
C.The NGOs will move to Europe and Asia D.The bubble barrier will benefit more places.
Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.
In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.
In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.
In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve. Then you can say, “I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors’ tragedies and stories, and know that they are cheering on.
27.Imitation proves useful when you ________.
A.know you are unique B.begin to learn something new
C.lose the balance of life D.get tired of routine practice
28.According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are ________ .
A.desperate to influence others with their knowledge B.eager to discover what their ancestors did
C.ready to turn their original ideas into reality D.willing to accept others’ ideas
    29.The trouble a creator faces is ________ .
A.how to use imagination creatively B.the absence of practical ideas
C.how to search for more materials D.the lack of strong motivation
30.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain the meaning of success. B.To criticize the characters of role models.
C.To compare imitation with creation. D.To highlight the importance of creativity.

Most of us haven’t been taught how to apologize (道歉). Sometimes our efforts tend to be hurtful and can make people feel even worse. When the apology is absent or it’s a bad apology, it puts a crack in the very foundation of a relationship and can even end it. And that’s why it is important to get it right. A good and responsible apology can meet the moment and improve our relationships. ___31___
    Less is more.
Keep your apology short and avoid the drama. If you’ve forgotten to return your friend’s bike, you don’t have to overdo it as if you’ve run over her kitten. Over-apologizing is not only annoying — it affects the flow of the conversation and shifts (转移) the focus away from the person who needs to be paid attention to. ___32___ .
    No ifs or buts.
When you’re apologizing for something, it’s essential to show true sadness and regret. ___33___ . “But” almost always means a criticism, or an excuse. It doesn’t matter whether what you say after the “but” is true. The “but” makes your apology false.
    ___34___ .
If you always listen for what you don’t agree with in order to defend yourself and correct the facts, it will do harm to both sides. Instead, you should keep an open mind and listen with an aim to understand the other person.
___35___ . An apology isn’t the only chance you ever get to address the existing issue. The apology is also the chance to establish the ground for future communication. When done with attention and care, an apology can be a channel for greater understanding and deeper connection.
    A.Be real
    B.Drop your defenses
C.Here are some tips to offer an apology
D.You’ve made the apology all about you
E.A good apology is a beginning, not an end
F.A sincere apology does not include ifs or buts
G.It’s not “I’m sorry” that fixes the problem, but your deeds

    The Price of a Dream
I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters--a group of foster kids, my father and my wonderful mother. My parents worked day and night to keep a roof over our heads and food on our table. It's true that we had little money and few goods, but we got plenty of love and attention. I was very happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. I fell in love with baseball at an early age, a love so deep that I almost gave it my all. I practiced hard every day and that made me a little closer to my dream. By the time I was sixteen, I had made great progress: I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fast ball and hit anything that moved on the field. I was also lucky: my high school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but also taught me how to believe in myself. One particular incident (事件) with my coach Ollie Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer holiday in Senior 2 and one of my friends recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and I could also begin to save money for a house for my mother, which was what I had always dreamed of. The prospect (前景) of this summer job was attractive and I wanted to jump at this chance. Then it hit me that I would have to give up summer baseball training to deal with the work schedule. I was afraid of telling my coach, who would certainly be against my plan. I hesitated for several days. At last, I spurred (给……打气) myself with the advice my mother often gave us, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I made up my mind.
    Paragraph1:
When I told my coach Ollie Jarvis, he was as angry as I expected him to be.

    19.
根据文章第二段中“Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations.”
根据文章第三段中“Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound.”
根据文章最后一段中 “Few people play the glass harp these days, … He hopes the next generation will continue making its music.
故选 A 项。

根据文章第一段“According to the World Economic Forum(WEF), eight million tons of plastic waste is being poured out into the oceans every year. That's the equivalent(相等物)of an entire garbage truck being dumped every three minutes, and the source of the problem—the world's cities. In Amsterdam, a simple solution has been found that could stop up to 86 percent of plastic waste ever reaching the oceans—a barrier made of bubbles(气泡).(根据世界经济论坛(WEF)的数据,每年有800万吨塑料垃圾被倒入海洋。这相当于每三分钟就有一辆垃圾车被倾倒,而问题的根源是世界上的城市。在阿姆斯特丹,人们找到了一个简单的解决办法,这个办法可以阻止多达86%的塑料垃圾流入海洋,那就是用气泡做成的屏障。)”可知,大量的海洋垃圾促成了气泡屏障的发明。故选B。
    24.
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“We pump air through it, and the air bubbles will rise towards the surface. The plastics are brought to the surface with the air bubbles and then, with the natural flow of the river, towards one side of the river. (管子上有很多小孔,我们把空气抽进去,气泡就会上升到表面。塑料和气泡一起被带到水面,然后随着河流的自然流动,流向河的一侧。)”可知,气泡的作用是把塑料送到水的表面。故选C。
    25.
词义猜测题。根据文章第三段划线词前句“So, we would have to find a solution which would not affect all the other existing activities and the ecosystem, ( 所以,我们必须找到一个不会影响所有其他现有活动和生态系统的解决方案。)”和后句“While it provides no block to water traffic and sea life can pass through freely, it also catches plastic waste of all sizes. (虽然它不阻碍水上交通,海洋生物可以自由通行,但它也可以捕获各种大小的塑料垃圾。)”可知,气泡屏障不会影响到水上的船舶交通。所以that指代“船舶交通”。故选B。
    26.
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Our next step is a bubble barrier within Europe and we, of course, want to move to Asia because we think we can make a lot of influence there. (我们的下一步是在欧洲建立一个泡沫屏障,当然,我们希望转移到亚洲,因为我们认为我们可以在那里产生很大的影响。)”可推断,气泡屏障创始人Francis Zoet希望泡沫屏障将使更多的地方受益。故选D。

    这是一篇议论文。作者认为盲目模仿是自我毁坏,幸运垂青那些乐于把自己的新奇想法付诸实践的人们,世界的发展更是需要这些有创造力的人。
    27.
细节理解题。根据第二段中“In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful.(在技能或性格发展的早期阶段,模仿是有帮助的)”以及所举的例子可知,当你开始学习新东西时,模仿被证明是有用的。故选B。
    28.
根据第五段中“Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration not desperation. (有福的人是愿意按照他们突然的渴望去创造一些独特的东西。想想那些对你影响最深的电影、书籍、老师和朋友。他们之所以能够打动你是因为他们的创作是基于灵感而不是绝望)”可知,根据作者的观点,世界因为那些准备把他们的原始想法变成现实的人而前进。故选C。
    29.
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.(有创造力的人有无穷无尽的想法。创作者面临的问题不是没有素材;它是关于如何处理敲着想象之门的材料)”可知,创造者面临的问题是如何创造性地运用想象力。故选A。
    30.
根据第一段“Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.(盲目模仿是自我毁灭。对于那些认不出自己独特价值的人来说,模仿显得很有吸引力;对于那些知道自己实力的人来说,模仿是不可接受的)”及下文论述可知,文章的主要目的是强调要创新,不要盲目模仿。故选D。

    本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些道歉的技巧。
    31.
根据前句“A good and responsible apology can meet the moment and improve our relationships.(一个好的、负责任的道歉可以适时地改善我们的关系)”及下文关于“一些道歉技巧”的内容可知,这里为承上启下句,介绍道歉的技巧。所以C“Here are some tips to offer an apology(下面是一些道歉的技巧)”符合上下文语境。故选C。
    32.
根据前句“Over-apologizing is not only annoying —   it affects the flow of the conversation and shifts the focus away from the person who needs to be paid attention to. (过度道歉不仅让人恼火,还会影响谈话的进行,把注意力从需要关注的人身上转移开)”可知,作者在讲过度道歉的危害,建议不要过度道歉,过度道歉会把道歉的重心从被道歉人(被关注人)身上移开,这样会造成道歉的关注点(重心)不是别人而是你自己,该空与上文因果关系,所以D“You’ve made the apology all about you (你让道歉的重心全是围绕你)”承接上文讲过度道歉的危害。故选D。
    33.
根据小标题“No ifs or buts.(没有“如果”或“但是”)”和后句““But” almost always means a criticism, or an excuse. (“但是”几乎总是意味着批评或借口)”可知,道歉时,不要使用“如果”或“但是”。所以F“A sincere apology does not include ifs or buts (真诚的道歉不包括“如果”和“但是”)”符合上下文语境。故选F。
    34.
根据下文“If you always listen for what you don’t agree with in order to defend yourself and correct the facts, it will do harm to both sides. (如果你总是倾听你不同意的东西,以捍卫自己和纠正事实,这将对双方都有害)”可知,本段主要介绍道歉的时候要放下自己的防御。所以B“Drop your defenses (放下你的防御)”符合上下文语境。故选B。
    35.
根据后文“An apology isn’t the only chance you ever get to address the existing issue. The apology is also the chance to establish the ground for future communication. (道歉并不是解决现有问题的唯一机会。道歉也是为今后的沟通奠定基础的机会)”可知,好的道歉只是一个开始,为以后的沟通奠定基础。所以E“A good apology is a beginning, not an end (一个好的道歉是一个开始,而不是结束)”符合上下文语境。故选E。

You can’t afford to waste them.” I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mother a house was worth facing his disappointment. “How much are you going to make at this summer job, son? ” he demanded. “$ 3.5 per hour,” I replied in a low voice.
    Paragraph2:
“Well,” he asked, “is $ 3.5 an hour from the summer job the price of a dream?” That simple question set me thinking. It made me understand the difference between wanting something right now and having a long-term goal. Determined to put all my heart into baseball, I promised the coach that I would give up the job. That summer, I dedicated myself to baseball training, and the next year, I was given a baseball scholarship to a university. Finally, I signed with a famous team for $ 1.7 million, and certainly bought my mother the house of my dream.
