Late last year, I needed to transport some furniture from our house to my son’s flat in central London. I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.
Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately, I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously.
At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement café waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just finished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You’ve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the damaged car’s windscreen, giving my phone number.
I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,” I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he’d witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked.
He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.
4. The man felt ______ to have delivered the furniture himself.
A. grateful B. regretful
C. proud D. confident
5. The man trembled violently because ______.
A. he caused a terrible traffic accident
B. driving the lorry was too difficult for him

6. The man said he was a bad man most probably because ______.
A. he made the traffic accident on purpose
B. he parked the big lorry on the pavement
C. he shouldn’t have driven the lorry himself
D. he shouldn’t have caused trouble for the disabled
7. The writer intended to suggest that ______.
A. it was exciting to drive a lorry B. it was hard to avoid accidents
C. being too confident is foolish D. the boss was expert in driving

A lot of people feel that it’s much harder to learn a foreign language as you grow older — and they’re right. A new study found that if you want to achieve the proficiency(精通) of a native speaker, you’d best start when you’re 10 years old.
There is a lot of evidence that shows children find it much easier than adults to learn a foreign language, which has made researchers suggest that there is an “important period” for language learning. But until now, no one has really been sure what that age period is. Now, MIT researchers believe they have solved one of those things.
They found that the window starts to close when you’re about 10 years old. Although children up to 17 or 18 learn a new language faster than adults, and their ability drops slower than that in adults, it becomes very difficult to reach the proficiency of a native speaker if you start later than age 10.
The findings are based on an analysis of a grammar test taken by nearly 670,000 people. Researchers took snapshots(快照) of thousands of people who were in different stages of learning English. They also used a game called “Which English?” to judge which dialect of English the test-taker speaks. Within hours after being posted on the social media, the 10-minute test “Which English?” spread quickly.
Researchers found that the grammar-learning ability remains strong until age 17 or 18, after which it starts to drop — which was rather unexpected. It’s not clear why the drop starts to happen. It may either be a cultural reason or a biological one. You shouldn’t let this disappoint you. Even if it’s a bit harder, you should try it. It’s not just the ability to talk to someone from another country. Studies have shown that learning a second or third language does wonders for your brain and mental health.
8. What does the word “window” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A good period to learn a foreign language.
B. A better way to solve a problem.
C. The ability to learn a foreign language.
D. A good memory to recite new foreign words.
9. What’s the function of “Which English?”?
A. It is a kind of grammar test.
B. It is a new method of learning English.
C. It helps analyze the way to learn English.
D. It can tell what kind of English people speak.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Culture affects language learning greatly.
B. Learning a foreign language can be very useful.
C. You had better not learn a new language when old.
D. The author doesn’t think the research is complete.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. When is the best time to learn a foreign language?
B. What kind of people are fit for learning a foreign language?
C. Things we should care for when learning a foreign language
D. Some special ways to learn a foreign language

Smokers who give up smoking and live on a diet high in tomatoes and fruits, especially apples, have better chances of repairing their lung function harmed by smoking, a new study finds. The study, published in the December issue of the European Respiratory Journal, said former smokers who ate more tomatoes and fresh fruits regularly saw a slower natural drop in lung function over a 10-year period.
According to the study, conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, adults who on average ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruits a day had a slower drop in lung function, compared to those who ate less than one tomato or less than one portion of fruits every day.
Lung function starts to drop at around age 30 and poor lung function is related to higher risks of death from all diseases, including heart disease and lung cancer. “A diet rich in fruits can slow down the lung’s natural aging process even if you have never smoked,” said Vanessa Garcia Larsen, the study’s lead author, who is also an Assistant Professor in Human Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Larsen and her team examined diets and lung function of more than 650 adults from Germany, Norway and Britain in 2002 and performed lung function tests on the same group of participants 10 years later. The researchers found a more eye-catching connection between diets and lung function among former smokers, who had a slower drop over the 10-year period because their diets were highly rich in tomatoes and fruits.
Such a result suggests that the nutrients(营养物) in their diets are good for repairing the harm to the lung done by smoking.
12. What’s the effect of tomatoes and fruits on former smokers?
A. They help smokers repair their lung function.
B. They slow down the aging process little by little.
C. They greatly reduce the risk of serious lung diseases.
D. They make smokers less worried about their health.
13. What risk is a 35-year-old man of poor lung function likely to have?
A. The acceleration(加速) of the lung’s aging process.
B. The heavy dependence on smoking cigarettes.
C. The danger of dying from serious diseases.
D. The faster natural drop in lung function.
14. Why were lung function tests performed on the same group 10 years later?
A. To examine if the participants develop the disease.
B. To make the readers believe the result of the study.
C. To see clear signs of a quick drop in lung function.
D. To see changes in lung function of the same person.
15. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce two kinds of fruits.
B. To describe some research work.
C. To tell people the result of a study.
D. To explain the effect of smoking on people.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In a recent survey of more than 1,300 students, 96% said they feel worried about exams. 16 There is no doubt that anyone wants to get high marks in exams, so students should learn to deal with exams as calmly and effectively as possible.
Develop a plan.
17 However, most of the students don’t plan how they’ll be prepared. They just tell themselves they’ll study as much as possible — then they’ll “hope for the best”. This isn’t a wise way. Preparing for an exam is like taking on an important project. It’s important to outline a plan for how you’ll get ready for an exam.
Change the sleep time early.
Many exams are held in the early morning — a time when students don’t usually feel very awake. If you’ll be taking a morning exam, start sleeping earlier at least one week before the exam so that your body will have time to adjust(适应). 18 Besides, it’s also a good idea to get eight hours of sleep each night.
19
It’s common for students to spend the 10 minutes before an exam doing some last-minute studying. This may provide some comfort, but overall it does more harm than good. The 10 minutes before an exam will make no difference. If you study during this time, you’ll become more stressed and worried. 20
A. Study until the last minute.
B. Don’t do any last-minute studying.
C. This high percentage isn’t surprising.
D. This will have a bad influence on your performance.
E. This will help you become more confident in the exams.
F. If not, your mind won’t be in a good state to take the exam.
G. It is of great importance for students to make a proper plan before an exam.

During the Great Depression in the 1930s, my grandparents Milas and Mary Dunaway lived well on their small farm — always busy with gardening, beekeeping or one of their many other projects. They also owned a tiny country store. Almost every day, you could find my brothers, my cousins and me hanging around our grandparents’ place, eyeballing Grandmother’s teacakes and other goodies. Grandpa, on the other hand, was the person we would try to move quickly to avoid, because he always had dozens of things just waiting for us.
One fine spring day, when Cousin Mary and I had just planned a full day of playing around when Grandpa saw us. “Come on,” he said. “I need you to help plant soybeans(大豆) .” We were a little afraid of him, so we had to follow along. The field, which wasn’t really very big, looked like a hundred acres to Mary and me.
Grandpa showed us how he wanted the soybeans dropped into the furrow(犁沟) he made in each row. This was fun for a few minutes, but we quickly got tired of dropping soybean after soybean, evenly spaced, into the soil. The job seemed endless. When we began dropping the soybeans too thickly, he would correct us. Under the watchful eye of Grandpa, we planted carefully behind him, soybean after soybean, slowly down the rows.
But as he began to trust us to do it right, Grandpa worked his way a good distance ahead of us. Suddenly, as we looked toward him, Mary and I noticed a hollow stump(空心的树桩) up ahead that had not been cleared from the field. That’s when a trick started. We looked at the soybeans, looked at the stump and looked at Grandpa. Walking slowly and heavily along, one tiny soybean at a time, we came near to the stump. Once we reached it we quickly put more than a gallon of soybeans into the stump and began covering the whole thing with dirt. Just then Grandpa turned and looked our way.

第三部分 写作
第一节 应用文写作
参考范文:
Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that you have been sick for days. You have studied so hard that you have no time to do any exercise, which does harm to your physical and mental health. It would be of great benefit to your health if you do more exercise.
Actually, exercise can improve your physical conditions and relax your mind. Only when you are in good health can you ensure and improve your study efficiency.
Therefore, I suggest that you take at least one hour’s exercise every day. I would be very pleased to see you have a stronger body.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
第二节
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Our hearts beat very hard and quickly. We’d been caught! But Grandpa just called out, “You two had better stop playing in the dirt and get back to work.” After a moment, we answered that we were almost out of soybeans. He came over, checked our bags and said, “I think I bought enough for this whole field.” Mary and I soon finished planting the remaining soybeans and happily ran back to the house. Grandmother even gave us candies as a reward for our help. We had gotten away with it!
Paragraph 2:
Our trick wasn’t found out until a few days later, when it rained. When the sun came out, Grandpa went out to the field to see if his soybeans were up. Oh, they were up,
all right — especially in one location. Hundreds and hundreds of tiny soybeans stuck up from the stump. We had thought we were so smart that we could fool Grandpa. Mary and I were finally punished, and Grandpa had the last laugh. Everybody must learn to be honest from a young age.

Text 4
M: I’m sorry I’m late, dear. I had a long meeting at the office.
W: That’s OK. Now we can try that new Chinese restaurant downtown.

M: I think you’d be a fool not to get it!
Text 6
W: Hi, Mark. How are you?
M: Great, Cindy. What’s new? Would you like to come in for coffee?
W: I’d love to. But to tell you the truth, I’m right in the middle of making Linda’s birthday cake, and I’m out of eggs. Do you think I could borrow a couple?
M: Oh, sure. No problem. How many do you need?
W: Just two.
M: Wait a minute. I’ll get them.
Text 7
M: Jane, I will leave here tomorrow.
W: Why? You are so skilled at your work.
M: I’ve been here for too long. I want to change my environment.
W: A new environment? You mean you have found a post in a new company?
M: No, but I’ve decided to study abroad.
W: Sounds a good idea. I also want to be a student again.
M: I’m quitting because I want to try something different. But first of all, I must have a higher degree.

M: I played computer games. I have been so absorbed in it that I forgot the time. I’m always crazy about playing the game. It’s a pain in the neck to cut down playing the game.
W: Maybe you should find some important things to do instead. If you were busy in other things, you would have no time to play it.
M: En…Good idea! I will try it from tomorrow. Thank you very much! Really nice speaking to you!
W: You too! See you later.
Text 9
W: I hate looking for a new apartment.
M: I don’t like it, either. But I’m hopeful about this one.
W: Why?
M: This one has a lot of great things about it. Well, for one, it’s a corner apartment. That means we don’t share as many walls with neighbors.
W: Good. I don’t need them telling me to turn down my music.
M: It’s also on the top floor, so we don’t have to listen to anyone walking above us.
W: OK. You’ve almost convinced (说服) me. Now, tell me what’s wrong with it.
M: Well, the bad thing is that it’s not super big.
W: You know I don’t care about that. Is it expensive?
M: No, it’s actually within our price range.
W: Well, you should have told me that first! I’m ready to stop the search now.
Text 10
M: Each year, the World Children’s Baseball Fair gives the chance for teams of children from around the world to learn and play baseball together.
I was lucky enough to attend the fair in Taiwan last summer. At first, I felt very nervous about traveling so far, however, my teammates tried to make me feel comfortable.
In the mornings, we learned baseball skills. In the afternoons, we took part in some interesting activities. On our first day, for example, we visited a traditional Taiwanese farm. We learned to make rice dumplings with the local people. Later, we also visited local museums and restaurants.
The best part of my trip was meeting kids from around the world. The children came from different countries, including France, Holland, Japan and Mexico. Most of us spoke different languages, but that didn’t matter. We could use baseball as an international language to communicate and create friendship.
