Gerardo Ixcoy is a 27-year-old teacher in Guatemala. He teaches in the area where having electricity is something of a luxury(奢侈品)and students have no access to mobile apps or computers, which became a problem when Guatemalan government had to choose distance education for students at home because of COVID-19.
Gerardo Ixcoy felt that he had to teach those children living far from the digital world. After all, education is a universal right and Gerardo Ixcoy thought those children shouldn't be excluded from having the education they needed. There had to be an alternative to distance education. But what was the solution?
Gerardo bought himself a secondhand tricycle(三轮车)with his savings. Once he had the tricycle, the next step was to change it into a classroom on wheels. He put a roof with a solar panel(太阳能电池板)on it, along with a screen to avoid the spread of COVID-19. He fixed a whiteboard on it so he could explain to the students the basics of primary education: math, the local language and the universal national language---Spanish.
The purpose of the solar panel is to provide constant power for a small loudspeaker so he can teach from a distance. It's a matter of respecting the healthy distance required to be safe from the virus. He, the teacher, stays outside, and the student participates from his or her house.
With that enthusiasm for education, he tries to visit his students at least twice a week, riding his classroom-cycle. The children he serves say that, although he visits them for only a few hours a week, they look forward to it. They appreciate his visit and will take advantage of it to learn.
21. What is the problem for the Guatemalan students because of COVID-19?
A. They cannot continue their study any more.
B. They are cut off from the digital world and the Internet.
C. They have no right to get the government's distance education.
D. They have to get distance education but they have no access to it.
22. What does the underlined word "excluded" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Chosen. B. Separated.
C. Protected. D. Blamed.
23. What can we learn from Gerardo Ixcoy's story?
A. Hard work pays off.
B. Great hope makes great man.
C. Education contributes to success.
D. Love for education breaks down barriers.

Magic is a form of entertainment that is based on pretending to do things that are impossible. The magician is a specially trained actor. He tries to make the audience believe that he has the power to do things which are against the laws of nature.
Magic shows are entertaining as long as the audience does not discover how the tricks are done. The magician usually depends on his skill with his hands, on his knowledge of psychology(心理学), and, sometimes, on mechanical devices(机械装置). Since magic performance is meant to trick people, the use of psychology is important. The magician must keep people from noticing all the movements of his hands and from thinking about the secret parts of his equipment. He must also lead the audience to draw false conclusions(结论). The magician's success depends on the fact that many things seen by the eye are not the things that matter.
Two basic magic tricks are making objects seem to appear and making objects seem to disappear. A combination of these two tricks makes for(促成)some interesting effects. For example, the magician puts a small ball under one of several cups. The ball then seems to jump from one cup to another or to change colour. What actually happens is that the magician, using quick hand movements or a mechanical device, hides one ball. While doing this he talks to the audience and waves a brightly coloured cloth with one hand. The audience is too busy watching the cloth and listening to the magician's words to notice that his other hand is hiding the ball.
Another favourite trick is to cut or burn something, and then make it appear whole again. What actually happens is that the magician makes the cut or burned object disappear by quickly hiding it while the audience watches something else. Then he “magically” makes it appear whole again by displaying(展示)another object that has not been cut or burned.
24. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote a magic show. B. To teach people to be magicians.
C. To explain the art of magic. D. To praise the talents of magicians.
25. Which of the following is important for a successful magic trick?
A. Moving stage equipment. B. Directing the audience's attention.
C. Applying high technology. D. Keeping the performance in secret.
26. What does the author focus on in the last two paragraphs?
A. Providing examples. B. Making a summary.
C. Drawing comparisons. D. Explaining a concept(概念).
C
No matter how advanced technology gets, it can never be a substitute(代替品) for good doctors and medical workers. During this year alone, healthcare professionals from all over the world have been putting themselves in a harmful way to treat COVID-19 patients. In times like this it is more important than ever that everyone has access to a doctor. But, according to statistics from the WHO, China has 19.79 medical doctors per 10,000 people (2017), the US has 26.12, and the UK has 27.86.
However, the rise of telemedicine(远程医疗)allows doctors to make better use of their time and provides better healthcare access, especially for those in rural areas. Telemedicine is the remote(远程的)delivery of healthcare services, including online consultations and diagnoses, and remote patient monitoring.
According to the World Economic Forum, “Nearly every other industry adopted(采取)widespread use of conference calls, and more recently, used video chats in order to cooperate remotely, while healthcare providers and patients both hesitated(犹豫)to adopt these tools to deliver healthcare.” However, COVID-19 could push them to adopt the new approach. Having one of the best healthcare systems in the world, Switzerland already offers virtual video appointments for private patients, and with cloud computing, this care can go even further.
With patient data being stored in the cloud, medical records can be easily shared and updated by all healthcare providers when required. With the addition of powerful cloud networks, wearable technology, such as bracelets, can monitor a patient’s key signs from their homes, removing the need for hospital care.
Seema, administrator of Medicare and Medicaid Center, told the Wall Street Journal, “The arrival of telehealth has been just completely speeded, and it’s taken this crisis to push us to a new frontier.” Indeed, telemedicine will have a huge effect on medical care, allowing for more personalized treatment of patients after COVID-19 has relieved.
27. What services can Telemedicine offer to online patients according to this text?
① Online operations. ② Online consultations.
③ Remote patient monitoring. ④ Virtual video appointments.
A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ①②③ D. ②③④
28. What is Seema’s attitude towards the future of telemedicine?
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.
29. What can we infer from the text?
A. The UK has the largest number of medical doctors in the world.
B. The number of medical doctors per 10,000 is relatively small in China.
C. Only Switzerland has the most developed medical system in the world.
D. Conference calls and video chats have been used widely in telemedicine.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for this text?
A. Online Medical Care. B. The Shortage of Medical Care.
C. The Side Effects of COVID-19. D. The Advanced Medical Technology.

Online Shopping Safety
Today, I will blog about the safety problems brought about by online shopping. I’m only a senior high school student, but many years as an online shopper have taught me a thing or two.
To begin with, use a familiar website. We will have to provide our address, telephone number and even bank account to the online shop owners. Choose the reliable online shop owners with good reputations only. Additionally, it is a good idea to use strong passwords, including characters, numbers and other signs, which cannot be easily guessed, or broken. Lastly, we’d better not use public computers to shop online, in which way personal information is not easily taken advantage of by others.
Do you have any good idea about online shopping safety? Post your comments below!

Hello, please listen to the following announcement. We’ve found a 6-year old girl named Jenny Smith. She was lost on the second floor near the Starbucks coffee shop. Would her parents please go to the airport office on the first floor to get her?
We also have the following announcements. Our airport shops are having a sale on whiskey from Scotland — if you buy two bottles, you can get a third for free. The same offer is good for wines from Spain. And if you prefer Russian vodka, we’re offering several brands at 25 percent off.
