Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely. Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources. Millions of waterfowl (水禽) were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen. Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat. In 1934, with the passage of the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act (Act), an increasingly concerned nation took firm action to stop the destruction of migratory ( 迁徙的) waterfowl and the wetlands so vital to their survival. Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and over must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. The very first Federal Duck Stamp was designed by J.N. “Ding” Darling, a political cartoonist from Des Moines, lowa, who at that time was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as Director of the Bureau of Biological Survey. Hunters willingly pay the stamp price to ensure the survival of our natural resources.About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System — a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come. Since 1934 better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat. Little wonder the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated.1. What was a cause of the waterfowl population decline in North America?A. Loss of wetlands. B. Popularity of water sports.C. Pollution of rivers. D. Arrival of other wild animals.2. What does the underlined word “decimate” mean in the first paragraph?A. Acquire. B. Export.C. Destroy. D. Distribute.3. What is a direct result of the Act passed in 1934?A. The stamp price has gone down.B. The migratory birds have flown away.C. The hunters have stopped hunting. D. The government has collected money.4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A. The Federal Duck Stamp Story B. The National Wildlife Refuge SystemC. The Benefits of Saving Waterfowl D. The History of Migratory Bird Hunting参考答案:本文是一篇说明文。 根据第一段“Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat.” 根据前一句“Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely.” A. Acquire获得;B. Export出口;C. Destroy破坏;D. Distribute分配。故选C。3. 根据最后一段“Since 1934, better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat.” 大陆;欧洲大陆4.be alive with v. ③ About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System — a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come. 分析: a fact that ensures..此处a fact两词做同位语对前面的事件进行解释说明,而that从句则为定语从句,用来修饰fact ,all generations to come. ④ Millions of waterfowl were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen. Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat. 分析:were killed运用被动语态;were dried之后的to feed.... 四:相同话题训练Passage APangolins (穿山甲) are the most trafficked (非法交易) mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly (有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation. Partnering with the non-profit organization Pangolin. Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal’s habitats.Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, "One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant."Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men on a mission to get all four species of African pangolin on camera for the very first time.1. What is the purpose of the documentary?A. To study the situation of pangolins.B. To collect fund to protect pangolins.C. To raise awareness of pangolin protection.D. To propose setting up pangolin reserves.2. What is the meaning of the underlined word “fussy” in paragraph 2?A. Picky. B. Messy.C. Showy. D. Heavy.3. What’s the documentary mainly about?A. The illegal trade of pangolins.B. The medical function of pangolin's scales.C. The life of pangolins in their natural habitats.D. The efforts of Pangolin, Africa to save pangolins.4. Where is the text most likely from?A. A brochure. B. A diary.C. A novel. D. But that doesn’t mean they’re doing alright in the wild.TigersAll six tiger species (物种) are endangered, with Suatran tigers and South China tigers at a seriously endangered status. The main reasons for their population decline are illegal hunting and destroyed habitats, as humans clear forests to get wood and build roadways. Only about 3,890 tigers presently live in the wild.Ground squirrelsThat’s right, even squirrels are endangered, specifically the San Joaquin ground squirrel. Native to California, USA, these guys have been disappearing since 1979 on account of the construction and human developments going through their habitat.Their total population is unknown, but it could be anywhere between 124,000 and 413,000.GiraffesThe International Union for the Conservation of Nature recently put giraffes at a vulnerable (易受伤害的) status, the level just before endangered. The giraffe population has declined 40 percent in the last 30 years, primarily due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Some giraffes are killed just for their tails, which are considered status symbols in Africa.Asian elephantsThe main threat to Asian elephants, one of the most intelligent animals, is their shrinking habitat. As the human population grows, people invade their land to build roads and railway tracks. Elephants in Myanmar are at an especially high risk for being captured and traded or used illegally in the tourist industry. Fewer than 50,000 are left on the entire continent.1. Giraffes.C. Ground squirrels. D. Asian elephants.3. What is the common threat to the four wild animals?A. Illegal hunting. B. Disturbed habitat.C. Developing tourism. D. Unnecessary construction.4. Which word can best describe the present situation for protecting wild animals?A. Satisfactory. B. Optimistic.C. Urgent. D. Stable. Only about 3,890 tigers presently live in the wild. The main threat to Asian elephants, one of the most intelligent animals, is their shrinking habitat. The main reasons for their population decline are illegal hunting and destroyed habitats,Ground squirrels部分中的these guys have been disappearing since 1979 on account of the construction and human developments going through their habitat,Giraffes部分中的primarily due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting和Asian elephants部分中的The main threat to Asian elephants... is their shrinking habitat. But that doesn’t mean they’re doing alright in the wild.
