A 3,000-year-old ceremonial gold mask has become an unexpected social media hit in China after its recent discovery in Sichuan province. The artefact was one of 500 Bronze-Age relics found at the Sanxingdui archaeological site. Experts say the discovery could provide new insights on the ancient Shu state, which ruled the area before 316 BC.
But the mysterious half-faced mask has also brought about a popular meme and memorable videos on social media. As soon as the latest group of discoveries was announced on Saturday, users of micro-blogging platform Weibo started making pictures combining the mask with the faces of pop culture figures. The comment “Sanxingdui gold mask photo editing competition” has been viewed nearly 4 million times, and has brought numerous posts as netizens praised the "stunning" and "beautiful" mask. "Good morning, we've just woken up, apparently everyone's been busy doing some Photoshopping?" the museum said in a recent Weibo post while sharing its own opinion about the meme. The ruins of a huge Maya city have been discovered in Guatemala with the help of the remote sensing technique LiDAR, according to the National Geographic on Thursday.
This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey landscapes in 3D by reflecting laser pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archeological sites (考古遗址), as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has been the activator (催化剂) of many discoveries in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did.
This large lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna—known for their temples and pyramids—but shows that these famous heritage areas are the tip of the iceberg of this lost urban network.
Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, more than 60,000 human-made features—homes, canals, highways, some of which can even reach the modernized standard—have been identified by an international cooperation of researchers headed by the PACUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya empire.
These ancient peoples obviously established these imaginative cultures based on their known relics, but the new research has shown that the scale of this lost society is far beyond what experts had imagined. The findings will be explored in an hour-long documentary called Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings, premiering (首映) Tuesday, February 6 on the National Geographic Channel.
“There are entire cities we didn’t know about now showing up in the survey data,” said Francisco Belli, one of the lead archeologists on the project. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities there that we don’t know about, and we will push the frontiers,” he added.
35.What can we know about LiDAR?
A.It’s a breakthrough in archeology. B.It’s major equipment in air forces.
C.It was first used in discovering a Maya city. D.It’s a remote sensing technique using laser pulses.
36.What does the underlined word “Those” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The jungles of the Reserve. B.The outlines of the Maya empire.
C.The researchers of the organization. D.The man-made projects of the Reserve.
37.Which of the following words can best describe the Maya empire?
A.Famous and dangerous. B.Vast and highly developed.
C.Mountainous and aggressive. D.Enormous and traditional.
38.What do archeologists hope to do next?
A.Restudy the history of Maya. B.Use the LiDAR sensors as usual.
C.Continue to explore the unknown. D.Study the documentary more carefully.

Zhao Yishen bends over, his eyes staring at the woodblock. Holding a chisel in his right hand, he guides it forward carefully and exactly across the woodblock using his left hand. To carve the woodblocks, the young craftsman has to hold this position for six hours. He has been carving woodblocks since 2012.
“It feels good and looks beautiful when a Chinese character slowly appears on the woodblock under your chisel,” says Zhao. Zhao is now the only full-time carver working at the Zhuyu Shanfang studio, a workshop that focuses on creating woodblock-printed books in Beijing. Each carved woodblock has ink applied and goes on to print a text onto hundreds of pieces of paper. Zhao carves around 20 Chinese characters each day, which means it takes him one year or even a longer time to complete a set of woodblocks fit for a whole book.
As a teenager he loved to read ancient Chinese books in the library, and the curiosity of how the books were made led him to get a job at the Guangling Guji ancient books woodblock printing studio in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, in 2011 after graduating as a law major from college.
Block printing was listed as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. Zhao was introduced to one of the technique’s masters, Chen Yishi, in 2012 and started to learn the skill from him.
In Zhao’s mind, the inked woodblock is a work of art. After a year of learning from Chen, Zhao found a job at Zhuyu Shanfang in 2013, where he upgraded his carving skills. With his progress, his carved woodblocks have been used for more and more books over the past years.
“I have just learned the basic skills, but to master it, I still need years of practice,” says Zhao. “A good craftsman can carve an entire book with every single character lined evenly.”
39.What can we know about Zhao Yishen’s work?
A.It is a flexible part-time job. B.It involves the printing work.
C.It needs much effort and time. D.It includes creating characters.
40.What made Zhao Yishen become a carver?
A.The family influence. B.His major in college.

Long ago there lived an explorer named Nicholas. He traveled around the world in search of new lands, new animals, and new relics to discover. And in every place he visited, Nicholas found a special gift to bring back to his son Christian.
In his most adventurous journey, Nicholas traveled to the Arctic to find the North Pole. Afterweeks of tireless dogsled trekking, Nicholas reached the northern Arctic Circle where very little life could survive. As the weeks turned to months, Nicholas could still not find the North Pole and his food supply was getting low. By this time, Nicholas saw small footprints in the snow. Hungry and freezing, Nicholas followed the footprints to a small village. He could not believe that anyone could live in such a freezing place, but there were dozens of small huts(木屋)around him.
Nicholas unleashed(解开)his dogs and went exploring. In the center of the village there sat a small tree. What caught Nicholas’eyes was a hat sitting atop the tree. Nicholas fought to reach the small tree and grabbed the hat. Not only did it look warm, but also he thought that it would also make a perfect gift for Christian-if he ever made it out of the Arctic and back home. The moment Nicholas placed the hat on his head, everything changed. The villagers left their huts and came out to surround him. The dogs became frightened and ran away at the sight of the crowd.
At that moment, a woman called Michael stepped forward and spoke. “The hat you are wearing was removed from the top of our tree. That tree is the North Pole, where there is no day and no night. As long as the hat stays here, we are unaffected by time. Now that you wear the hat too, you will not age. But the hat cannot be removed. If you do so or leave with the hat, we would not be able to survive.” Nicholas was astonished. He sat down on his sled and cried. He needed to get back to his son. “You may leave for one day a year. Such a short time away would not harm us.” Michael said. “I cannot go anywhere in one day’s time”, Nicholas said.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“You may use our caribous(驯鹿)and you will find the trip much shorter while you wear the hat”, said Michael.

This afternoon all the teachers and students in our school had a discussion about whether Yuanmingyuan Park should be reconstructed and opinions are divided on the question.
60% of the students are against the idea of reconstructing Yuanmingyuan Park. They hold the belief that what it is like now can serve as the best material to educate people. Rebuilding it would not only cost a large amount of money, but also probably lead to people forgetting its history.
On the other hand, 40% think that Yuanmingyuan Park should be reconstructed because it will become more attractive after being rebuilt. Consequently, people can learn more about Chinese culture by visiting the new Yuanmingyuan Park. What’s more, they worry many relics will break down and even disappear for lack of protection.

“You may use our caribous(驯鹿)and you will find the trip much shorter while you wear the hat”, said Michael. The villagers took good care of Nicholas. They fed him well and gave him the largest hut they had. Nicholas spent the next two days building gifts for his son. By the day of his departure, Nicholas had built his son dozens of wonderful gifts out of wood. The villagers helped him pack the presents. Nicholas was almost flying when he was on the caribous! He looked down to see the smiling face of Michael as he waved him goodbye.
But when he entered his house, his son was no longer there and none of his belongings were there either. He wanted his son to have a gift from him. So Nicholas went to every house in the village and dropped a single toy down each chimney, hoping that one of the toys would reach his beloved son. The heartbreak of not finding his son had reminded Nicholas of those waiting for his return up north. He could not let them down, no matter how much he wanted to stay. So with every gift gone, Nicholas flew back to the North Pole.
