Across the world, language and history are connected. As society and tradition change, new words or phrases are created to show the present cultural understanding. Some old phrases and words simply turn into the accepted usages with their backgrounds forgotten.
One such phrase “grandfathered in” has become a common one now. Although it often makes people think of the image of a gray-haired, older gentleman, who gets out of trouble because of his age, it actually means that one person or a business has the right to refuse the new rules.
A deeper look into the first use of the phrase shows an interesting story in history. It happened in a town in the 1980s. A new law was passed there not to allow illiterates (文盲) to participate in the making of rules as they couldn’t read or write and might not help in the process. The limit was potent because except for the old and children, there were close to 30 percent of young adults in the town who had little or no education. Being strong and energetic, they made up an important part of the town’s development.
Considering that, some officers in the town didn’t readily accept the rule. Instead, they carefully gave their advice to the head of the town. At the same time, they encouraged these young adults to pass the literacy(读写能力)tests. Thus a “grandfather clause(条款)”was added to allow illiterates to participate as long as they or their grandfathers had once been participants. The clause no doubt helped remove the unfairness and benefited all.
The phrase “grandfathered in” is of course still widely used today without being limited to a certain field. But even as culture and tradition change, whether we’re aware of it or not, language has the power to hold our history.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), along with Chinese Kungfu and Peking Opera, is one of China’s cultural symbols recognized worldwide. It is a gem of Chinese civilization, and it has also made great contributions to world civilization by improving people’s health and promoting social progress.
There used to be a debate in China about whether TCM or Western medicine was better, and arguments can still be heard today. But actually, TCM and western medicine are two different medical theoretical systems that can not replace each other. In some aspects such as surgery, Western medicine is better than TCM, but in other areas, such as recovery after surgery and treatment of chronic (慢性的) diseases, TCM is more effective. This is way some Chinese hospitals provide both TCM and Western medicine treatments. A combination of both has been accepted by many Chinese people as the most effective treatment.
Today, promoting and innovating TCM has become a consensus (共识) in Chinese society. The Chinese government has formulated policies to support the development and innovation of TCM, with a view to establishing a Chinese healthcare development model paying equal attention to both.
The supportive policies of the Chinese Government will focus on three aspects. The first is the strengthening of TCM services in medical institutions. The second is to apply Internet technology to TCM management, including setting up a database containing TCM electronic medical records and prescriptions (处方). The third is to give better play to the advantages of TCM, especially acupuncture (针灸) and naprapathy (推拿). The function of TCM in disease prevention and recovery will also be enhanced.
As long as TCM keeps its core strengths and respects the rules of development and innovation, it will surely be able to maintain its vitality and bring more benefits to people in China and the world.
36.What advantage does Western medicine have over TCM?
A.It is a symbol of national civilization.
B.It is more successful in recovery after surgery.
C.It is more effective in surgery.

A.It calls on the public to support TCM.
B.It combines Internet Technology with TCM.
C.It makes better use of the advantages of TCM.
D.It increases TCM services in hospitals and medical centers.
38.What can be a suitable title for the text?

C.TCM is One of China's Cultural Symbols. D.TCM Breaks New Ground.

The Beginning of Canada
Canada is in the North American continent. For people who live outside this country the history of this nation may not be known.
Canada has gone through a long history. North America's first humans migrated from Asia, probably over a land bridge from Siberia to Alaska sometime about 12,000 years ago.Unknown numbers of people moved southward along the western edge of the North American ice cap.The Inuit who live in Canada's Arctic regions today were the last people to reach Canada.
Before Europeans came, about 12 languages were developed by the natives of the land. These languages were found in various cultures and tribes. In these tribes, there was mixture of agriculture and hunting. Also, some groups had a high-level of political, religious, cultural, and trading organization.
The first European explorers-of the Canadian region were Vikings from Iceland, where they came to Labrador and Newfoundland. The natives and Vikings did not get along well, so Vikings eventually ran away from the region. John Cabot, an Italian navigator came upon this land Cabot and his crew were the second group of Europeans to reach what would become Canada around 1000 CE.
The first claiming of the land in Canada was by the French. Between 1534 and 1542, Jacques Cartier made three voyages across the Atlantic, claiming the land for King Francis I of France. By the 1550s, the name of Canada began appearing on maps.
More French settlement activity continued in the name of competing with the Spanish. In1604 the French navigator Samuel de Champlain led a group of settlers to Acadia which proved unsuitable. In 1605, they moved across the Bay of Fundy to Port Royal but found its water systems were too difficult to get through for efficient goods delivery. Finally in 1608, Champlain built a fortress (堡垒) at what is now Quebec City
In the following years, England, the Netherlands, and also Scotland tried to claim parts of Canada as their own through trade and war. Competition for the region was in trade, land, and religion. With many countries competing for Canada at its new home, the British eventually made it a new part of its empire, with the French taking a smaller part in its governing and influence.

''What's wrong, Biyen?'' said Peter's grandmother. Biyen was the Ojibwe (齐佩瓦人) name for Peter, He called her Nokomis, which meant grandmother.
Peter looked up. ''I have to give a presentation where I talk about a family tradition. I know we have lots of beliefs and customs. Can you remind me of one? ''

Peter opened the box. Present before him was a wooden hoop (圈). It was in the shape of a circle. String was woven and twisted around the hoop. It looked like a spider web. A black bead (珠子) sat near the center with feathers hanging from the bottom. Seeing it, Peter wiped away his tears and smiled.
''This is a dream catcher, '' said Nokomis. ''Our people have made these for many years. Circles are symbols of unity and strength. Let's hang it over your bed tonight. It will catch your bad dreams in the web, and your good dreams will fall through the center. Maybe it will give you courage to do your presentation.'' Looking at Nokomis, Peter asked whether he could take that to school. Nokomis refused because the dream catcher was extremely precious, which meant a lot to her.
Peter felt disappointed at her words because he wanted to share the dream catcher with his class, ''We could make you one,'' said Nokomis. ''I'd like that! '' cried Peter in excitement. Without delay, Nokomis and Peter worked together and they made a dream catcher.

Part 3 读后续写
That night, as Peter looked at the dream catcher over his bed, he had an idea. Besides telling his classmates about their tradition, he wanted everyone to have a good dream, so he decided to teach them how to make a dream catcher. With the help of his Nokomis, Peter wrote down the steps of how to make a dream catcher. When finishing, he smiled in excitement. He would share it with his class.
Thunders of applause exploded after Peter gave the presentation. For they all had a better understanding of the symbols of a dream catcher. Then, peter told them he would teach them how to make one for themselves. Everyone followed as they were being told. Soon, they all had a dream catcher, which was precious to them. They all showed their gratitude to Peter and promised to talk about their own tradition next time.
Considering that every one of his classmates was likely to have a dream catcher, he decided to teach them how to make one for themselves.考虑到他的同学可能都想有一个捕梦网,他决定教他们如何为自己自作一个。句用使用了现在分词作状语。
【高级句型二】He would share what he had written down with his classmates the following day.第二天他要把所写的分享给他的同学。句中使用了what引导宾语从句。
