Today, some 815 million people suffer chronically(长期地) from hunger. And although this is significantly fewer people than the numbers we saw a decade ago, hunger still kills more people than AIDS, Tuberculosis(肺结核) and Malaria(疟疾) combined.
On May 28th, we observe World Hunger Day. It is an effort to focus attention on the fact that despite an adequate availability of food nearly everywhere, globally, some 21,000 people die every day from hunger or malnutrition(营养不良).
People do not go hungry because the world does not produce enough food for everyone. According to the world Hunger Education Service, over the past three decades, significant growth in food production, along with improved access to food, helped reduce the percentage of chronically undernourished(营养不良的) people in developing countries from 34 percent to 15 percent. The principal problem is that many people in the world still do not have resources to purchase or grow enough food.
Indeed, hunger is a consequence of poverty, and also one of its causes. Hunger exists because many countries lack social safety nets; because in many countries women, although they do most of the farming, do not have as much access as men to training, credit or land.
Conflict, governance systems that do not encourage investment in agriculture, poor management of land and natural resources, lack of educational opportunity, displacement of small farmers by natural disasters, and financial and economic difficulties that remove jobs at the lowest levels, all contribute toward creating conditions that push the poorest into hunger.
Over the past decade, a global push to reduce hunger and extreme poverty has marked some significant successes, thanks in part to the efforts of numerous international and transnational institutions, foundations, NGOs and governments, including the United States.
But on world Hunger Day, let us not forget that with over 815,000 people still living in daily food insecurity, we still have a long way to go before we can safely say that no child goes to bed hungry most nights and that no parent skimps on(节省) their own dinner so the children can eat.
31.The three deadly diseases are mentioned in the text to stress ________.
A.hunger is as critical a problem as they are
B.disease is still the leading cause of death
C.hunger remains to be a rather serious problem
D.disease goes hand in hand with starvation

Gardeners may be able to cut down on the amount of weeds (杂草)killer they use by dealing with invaders at specific times of the day, such as dawn, a new study suggests.
Researchers at the University of Bristol have discovered that the 24-hour rhythms of plants leave them more defenseless to herbicides (除草剂) at different points in their daily 24 hour cycle.
They believe the findings could help farmers by reducing crop loss and improving harvests. And gardeners could benefit from knowing which weeds respond better at certain times of the day. In recent years, pesticides (杀虫剂) and herbicides have been implicated in the decline of important pollinating insects, such as bees.
Dr.Antony Dodd, senior author of the new study, said,“The research suggests that,in future, we might be able to improve the use of some chemicals that are used in agriculture by taking advantage of the biological clock in plants.”
Just like humans, plants have evolved to take advantage of cycles of night and day, with certain biological processes turning on at different times of the day.
Scientists have discovered that many drugs work much better in humans if they are given at specific hours. Aspirin, for example, has doubled the impact on thinning the blood if taken at night as opposed to in the morning. The process is known as 'chronotherapy' and researchers wanted to find out if the same concept could be applied to plants.
Many gardeners already know that plants drink in more water in the morning because their pores(气孔) are open to take advantage of early morning dew and water vapour. At the break of the day, plants are also not busy producing food through photosynthesis(光和作用)。The open pores could also be the reasons that chemicals are more effective at dawn and also at dusk.
The air is also likely to be stiller at dawn and dusk, meaning that pesticides or herbicides are less likely to be blown away to places where they are not wanted.Pesticide labels often warn against spraying on windy days in case they endanger people or animals. Many insects are active early in the morning and around dusk, also making very early morning and early evening effective times for insecticide.
Commenting on the study, Dr. Trevor Dines, Botanical Specialist at the conservation charity Plantlife, said, “This is a fascinating research which will be of great interest to many gardeners like me. This research knocks our previous assumption on its head. The opposite is true.”
34.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “implicated in" in the third paragraph?
A.restored to
B.blamed for
C.limited to
D.composed of
35.According to the research, which is one of the reasons for using herbicides in the morning?
A.The process of photosynthesis is most active in the morning.
B.Insects are more defenseless in the morning than any other time of the day.
C.Bigger pores on the plants make herbicides work more effectively.
D.The stronger morning wind blows pesticides away to more places.
36.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Gardeners were not interested in combining science with gardening.
B.A long time had passed before herbicide was applied in farming.
C.The old assumption about the use of chemicals proved right.
D.Many gardeners used to spray herbicides at the wrong time.
37.What is the main idea of this article?
A.New chemicals have been found to help kill harmful insects.
B.Biological clock of plants could help gardeners use less weed killer.
C.Plants' cycles can be taken advantage of to improve the environment.
D.The research on the effects of pesticides has enabled good harvests.

Upright farming is a hugely promising agricultural technique that aims to produce more food to meet the growing population on our limited planet. Techniques include growing in vertical frames(垂向框架) or even in high-rise farms while moving farms into urban areas, and producing nutritious crops without topsoil.
Vertical farmers plant crops in nutrient-rich water, so plants can be raised without soil. They also grow plants using water from fish tanks, or using nutrient water mist systems that reduce water use by more than 90 percent, which was a technique developed by NASA as a way for astronauts to grow in space and feed themselves without soil while preserving precious water supplies. All of these soil-less growing techniques use less or no chemicals, and recycle water with less waste. Plants can be sown and harvested year-round, free from bad weather conditions such as drought or flooding.
“This is the farming of the future,” said Paul Myers, co-founder of vertical farming enterprise Farm Urban. “Chemical-free and moving from the traditional horse and tractor agriculture that is steadily destroying the planet to a more sustainable approach.”
The global vertical farming market is expected to be six times bigger in 2026 than it is today. This is fueled in part by rising demand for organic, chemical-free foods, but also by countries looking to increase their food security and cut down on imports—the UK for example uses more than 70 percent of its land mass for agriculture but imports more than half of its food.
As the vertical farming industry expands, it is worth noting that it has limitations -- it only works for some crops, and urban locations can be expensive.
38.Where will upright farming be popular in the future?
A.In cities. B.In plains. C.In deserts. D.In the countryside.
39.What do the techniques mentioned in paragraph 2 have in common?
A.Waste-free. B.Nutrient-rich. C.Soil-less. D.Water-proof.
40.Why is upright farming promising?
A.The trade routes are not secure. B.Organic food is increasingly popular.
C.The economic benefit is substantial. D.Imports are becoming more difficult.
41.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Upright Farming: How to Save Soil And Water
B.Upright Farming: What to Plant In The New Way
C.Vertical Farming: Lowering Environmental Impact
D.Vertical Farming: Raising Agriculture’s Potential
Part 3
Akram would spend his day taking care of sheep in the grassland. When night fell, he only had one thing to entertain himself—to talk to the stars, and study the shape of the constellation(星座). Afterwards, he would move back to the camp late at night and rest before starting the same routine the next day. In fact, his life formed an endless cycle of traveling between the grassland and a small camp house with a roof made of grass, but that had only been his routine for two years. Before that, he had been living in a small village with his family.
He was just ten but was homeless two years ago, and was forced to travel across his country to the neighboring country because of war, leaving behind a wonderful childhood on his own land.
After settling down in the valley in this new land, he had been used to his new life by accepting that he was taking care of sheep, something that he had never thought of doing be-fore. It was his job to lead the sheep to the grassland and let them eat grass. From time to time, he would take his sheep to a more remote valley, because it reminded him of his village and his grandfather.
Sometimes, he imagined losing himself in those sands blown by the wind, and going to another world, free of suffering, pain and cruelty. In this way he passed his time, keeping his memories alive by simply recalling them again and again, refusing to let them disappear.

根据文章第一段“Today, some 815 million people suffer chronically(长期地) from hunger. And although this is significantly fewer people than the numbers we saw a decade ago, hunger still kills more people than AIDS, Tuberculosis(肺结核) and Malaria(疟疾) combined.”(今天,约有8.15亿人长期遭受饥饿之苦。
根据文章第3段第一句“People do not go hungry because the world does not produce enough food for everyone. ”(人们饥饿并不是因为粮食的产量不够。)和最后一句“The principal problem is that many people in the world still do not have resources to purchase or grow enough food.”(主要问题在于:世界上的很多人没有资源,无法购买以及种植粮食。) 第4段第一句“Indeed, hunger is a consequence of poverty, and also one of its causes.”(事实上,饥饿是贫困的结果,也是贫困的原因之一。)第5段“Conflict, governance systems that do not encourage investment in agriculture, poor management of land and natural resources, lack of educational opportunity, displacement of small farmers by natural disasters, and financial and economic difficulties that remove jobs at the lowest levels, all contribute toward creating conditions that push the poorest into hunger.”(冲突、不鼓励农业投资的治理体系、土地和自然资源管理不善、缺乏教育机会、小农因自然灾害而流离失所、以及导致最低层次工作岗位流失的金融和经济困难,所有这些都有助于创造条件,使最贫穷的人陷入饥饿。)
根据文章最后一段“But on world Hunger Day, let us not forget that with over 815,000 people still living in daily food insecurity, we still have a long way to go before we can safely say that no child goes to bed hungry most nights and that no parent skimps on(节省) their own dinner so the children can eat.”(但值此世界饥饿日之际,让我们不要忘记,由于每天仍有81.5万人生活在粮食不安全之中,我们还有很长的路要走,才能有把握地说,大多数晚上没有孩子饿着肚子上床睡觉,没有父母会吝啬自己的晚餐让孩子们吃。)

根据第七段中的“Many gardeners already know that plants drink in more water in the morning because their pores(气孔) are open to take advantage of early morning dew and water vapour.( 许多园丁已经知道,植物在早晨喝更多的水,因为它们的毛孔是开放的,可以吸收清晨的露水和水蒸气)”及“The open pores could also be the reasons that chemicals are more effective at dawn and also at dusk.(开放的毛孔也可能是化学物质在黎明和黄昏时更有效的原因)”可知,在清晨使用除草剂的原因是植物上更大的毛孔使除草剂更有效地发挥作用,故C项正确。
36.
根据最后一段中的“This research knocks our previous assumption on its head. The opposite is true.(这项研究推翻了我们之前的假设。但事实却恰恰相反)”可知,研究推翻许多园丁过去的想法,因此推断许多园丁过去常常在错误的时间喷洒除草剂,故D项正确。
37.
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据第一段内容“Gardeners may be able to cut down on the amount of weeds (杂草)killer they use by dealing with invaders at specific times of the day, such as dawn, a new study suggests.(一项新的研究表明,园丁们可以通过在一天中的特定时间对付入侵者,比如黎明,来减少杂草杀手的数量。)”

根据第二段“Vertical farmers plant crops in nutrient-rich water, so plants can be raised without soil. They also grow plants using water from fish tanks, or using nutrient water mist systems that reduce water use by more than 90 percent, (垂直种植的农民在营养丰富的水中种植作物,所以植物可以在没有土壤的情况下生长。他们还利用鱼缸中的水或营养水雾系统种植植物,这些系统可以减少90%以上的用水量)”和“All of these soil-less growing techniques use less or no chemicals, and recycle water with less waste. (所有这些无土栽培技术使用更少或不使用化学品,并以更少的废物回收水)”可知,第二段中提到的技术共同点是节省土壤。故选C。
40.
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“This is fueled in part by rising demand for organic, chemical-free foods, but also by countries looking to increase their food security and cut down on imports — the UK for example uses more than 70 per cent of its land mass for agriculture but imports more than half of its food.(这是部分是因为对有机和不含化学物质食物需求的增长,但也受国家寻求提高粮食安全和减少进口的影响——例如英国陆地总面积的70%用于农业,但进口的一半以上的食物)”可推断,垂直农业有前途的原因是有机食品越来越受欢迎。故选B。
41.
根据第一段“Upright farming is a hugely promising agricultural technique that aims to produce more food to meet the growing population on our limited planet.(垂直农业是一种非常有前景的农业技术,旨在生产更多的粮食,以满足我们有限的地球上不断增长的人口)”以及倒数第二段“The global vertical farming market is expected to be six times bigger in 2026 than it is today.(预计到2026年,全球垂直农业市场的规模将是现在的六倍)”及全文可知,本文主要是讲述垂直农业在农业上的发展潜力。故选D。

Akram always remembered wonderful days with his grandfather on nary nights. As a child, one of his favorite things was to sit outside the yard with his grandfather. He liked counting stars, which shone like diamonds in the darkness. Both his grandfather and he enjoyed imagining each constellation as different shapes like dogs, flowers, spoons and many other things. Sometimes, he could hear lots of interesting stories told by his grandfather. All these were the most precious part of his life.
However, such thoughts broke when some sheep started bleating(咩咩叫). It was often the case that he was forced to return to the real world. Then he waved his stick in the air to stop them from their fighting with each other. He would guide the sheep to grassland in the direction of his hometown. Looking at the distance, he found that the mountains stood like soldiers, guarding his motherland. He wondered how soon he would be back to his own land.
