Ashley Power’s mother bought a computer for her when she was eight. When she was thirteen, she was surfing the Internet on a regular basis, but she couldn’t find anywhere for teenagers lo meet and talk. And one day she thought, “If I had my own website, I’d make it a really interesting site for teenagers.”
Consequently, when Ashley was sixteen, she started her own website called GooseHead. She had no idea how big a success it would be, but three years later, the site was the most successful teen site in the U.S.A.! It was getting 100,000 hits every day, and Ashley had about 30 employees.
After a few years, the website closed down. Then Ashley, who lived in Los Angeles, was asked to write a book called GooseHead Guide to Life. The book is about how to design a website and start a business. It begins with a section called “All about Ashley”, where Ashley tells readers what it’s like to be the boss of a company when you’re only sixteen — not always easy!
In her book, Ashley talks about the problems that teenagers have today plus the importance of friendship. She also focuses on being independent. “Learn to love your friends but not rely on them. I did that by creating GooseHead on my own.”
Ashley says that GooseHead Guide to Life is not a book of teenage advice. “It isn’t a book that’s going to tell you what to do. I hope you can work that out by yourself,” she says. “I just want to provide a little inspiration for teenagers. Maybe after reading my story, you’ll start your own website! But perhaps you’ve got a better idea? Well, if I were you, I’d just do it, whatever it is. Maybe it won’t work — but maybe it will.”

Many Westerners have the idea that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu. This is, of course, a silly belief. But it is true that kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
Like most people from the West, I was first introduced to kung fu through Hong Kong action films. Stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan made kung fu popular in the Western world. The flashy and impressive performances they gave in films like Rumble in the Bronx and Enter the Dragon made them household names in the U.S. and elsewhere.
However, my own personal interest in kung fu was actually inspired by a hip hop group. Wu-Tang Clan, founded in the early 1990s in New York City, is one of the most influential hip hop groups in history.
In their songs, they sometimes mention philosophical concepts that come from Wudang quan — a classic Chinese martial art from which they take their name — and Shaolin Temple. I was just a teenager when I first started listening to Wu-Tang Clan — little did I know that I would actually end up living in China later in my life!
I myself do not practice kung fu. However, the concepts behind it are quite interesting to me. There is a Bruce Lee quote that I often think of when I’m struggling with challenges in life. “Be formless, shapeless, like water,” he once said. By this, he meant that you should be ready to adapt to and change your attitudes or beliefs when you face difficulties. I think this is a good way to deal with life.
    8. What does “a silly belief” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. All Chinese people can do kung fu. B. China is most famous for its kung fu.
    C. Kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture. D. Many Westerners admire kung fu.
    9. What inspired the author’s interest in kung fu?
    A. Hong Kong action movies. B.A TV program about kung fu.
    C. Kung fu stars in Hollywood. D. A US hip hop group.
    10. What do we know about the Wu-Tang Clan?
    A. They have Chinese culture in their songs. B. They taught the author how to do Wudang quan.
    C. They performed Chinese martial arts in the U.S. D. They showed the author the way to live in China.
    11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. The author was sorry that he couldn’t do kung fu.
    B. The concepts of kung fu change over time.
    C. The spirit of kung fu helps the author overcome difficulties.
    D. Bruce Lee was the most popular martial arts master.
    D
Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing(光合作用) while animals have all the fun. Right? Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ant and plant’s co-evolution(共同进化) started with ants feeding on plants and plants evolving ant-friendly features.
Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ants to use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mammals. These include hollow thorns that ants will live inside, or extra nectar(琼浆) on leaves or stems for ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seeds around by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed — often in a nutrient-rich area where it’ll grow better, and since it’s farther away from its parent, they won’t have to compete for resources.
But scientists weren’t sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.
The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it’s not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study matters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.
    12. Why do some plants attach food packets to their seeds?
    A. To reward the ants. B. To make a fool of ants.
    C. To provide nutrition for the seeds. D. To get the seeds moved around.
    13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
    A. How plants and ants interact. B. What ants do to protect plants.
    C. How plants and ants survive from attacks. D. Why plants and ants need co-evolution.
    14. Which is true about the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants?
    A. Ants depended more upon plants. B. It caused a race for better evolution.
    C. How it got started was uncertain. D. It was of little value for future studies.
    15. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
    A. To introduce a science research method. B. To inform readers of a latest research finding.
    C. To arouse readers’ interest in science research. D. To criticize people’s traditional views about plants.

Apologizing the Right Way to a Friend
Why are apologies so difficult? Saying you are sorry can be one of the most difficult things you do. But we all make mistakes, so you’ll probably have an occasion when you need to apologize.
Perhaps you had a big blow up and realized later you reacted poorly. 16 . Whatever the reason, apologizing can help you both heal and move on from the situation.
17 . First, you acknowledge that you did something wrong. With an apology, you take responsibility for your actions, which allows your friend to forgive you. Second, an apology gives you sincerity as a friend. 18 , but that doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t apologize.
Now, what are elements of a proper apology? 19 , depending on what the offense was, where it was done, and who you are apologizing to. In general, a good apology should include the following: a request for their attention, an acknowledgment of what happened, sincerity in admitting you did something wrong and the words. “I’m sorry” or “I apologize.”
Here are things never to say when apologizing. Note that the art of apologizing involves taking responsibility. Never apologize as a way to “shut someone up” when they are saying you hurt their feelings and you don’t think you did. 20 , you should talk things through with your friend until you see why they are hurt or how you came across. You’ll really need to self-reflect so you can see things from your friend’s point of view.
    A. When you make your apology in person
    B. If you really believe you did nothing wrong
    C. Apologies benefit friendships in a variety of ways

    E. Or maybe you just didn’t show support when you needed to
