Every year, a lot of young people in Britain finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university. Some people go to other countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give their time to help people — for example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they help with environmental protection.
Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to a university to study Spanish, but now she is living in Belize, a small country in Central America. Pauline says, “I'm working with other people here to protect the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is polluted, the coral dies. I'm helping to study the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it's too late.
I'm staying with a family here. They are very friendly and I help with the cooking and the cleaning. I don't get any money, but that's OK. Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱). Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral. Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn’t help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer,” If there’s anything I can do …” Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that man’s need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel, or house-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks,” How did you know I needed that one?” I reply,” Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”
( )7.The writer didn’t know what to put into the suitcases because _____.
A. she couldn’t do it on her own B. she was too sad to do anything
C. she wanted to take everything to Seattle D. she was not good at housework
( )8.Here’s a time line of what happened in the story.
Which of the events should go second above?
A. Emerson came to clean the shoes. B. The couple bathed the children.
C. They cleared the supper dishes D. The writer found the shoes cleaned.
( )9.If one of her friends has lost a loved one, what will the writer probably NOT do?
A. Call her friend to ask what she can do.
B. Look after her friend’s young children.
C. Take her friend’s dog to the boarding kennel.
D. Offer her friend house-sitting during the funeral.
( )10.Which sentences best expresses the theme of this story?
A. One person’s loss is another’s gain.
B. An act of kindness is often rewarded.
C. A near neighbour is better than a brother far off.
D. Do something specific to help those in need.

Calvin waited outside Trudy’s bedroom. Then it happened—a scream, a very loud scream. Calvin ran to his room and dived into bed.

“Don’t think that just because it’s your birthday you can get away with something like this,” Mama scolded.

Everyone likes a well-mannered person. A well mannered person knows what he should do and what he shouldn’t do. Here are some examples.
He never laughs at the people in trouble. Instead, he tries his best to help and make them feel comfortable. We say that a person has good manners because he is polite, kind and helpful to others. Everyone likes people with good manners. He always treats people kindly. He is kind to the animals too. When people are waiting in line for a bus, or in a cinema, he always waits for his turn patiently. He does not push in before others. If he bumps into someone in the street, or someone gets in his way, he says “sorry” or “excuse me”.
He says “please” when asking for help and “thank you” when he receives something from other people. He usually stands up when he talks to a lady or an elder person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated. He does not talk or laugh loudly in public.
However, people in different countries have different manners. Before entering a house in some Asian countries it is necessary to take off one’s shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house never finishes a drink. He leaves some to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink to show that he has enjoyed it.

Don’t circle your plate with your arms. If you do so, you will become the focus of the table. Everyone would wonder, “Is there anything wrong with the food?” This may give a wrong message that you don’t like the food or something like that.
Don’t push the plate back when you have finished eating. Leave it where it was. Don’t lean back and say “I’m through” or “ I’m full”. Just put the fork and knife across the plate. That’s all.
Don’t cut up everything before you start to eat. Cut only one or two bites at a time. Never take a huge mouthful of anything. Do you want to show how hungry you are? Don’t do that. It’s bot so good.

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In a 1 way, failure may be a way towards success. Edison, the i 2 of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked w 3 he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often, he smiled and said, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50,000 ways that won't w 4 .
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top from yourself? What can you change? Then you can decide w 5 to keep on working hard or try it in a better way, and things will probably not go wrong n 6 time.
Second, is the goal you're trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think c 7 about this question. “If I am able to achieve my goal, where will it get me?" This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn't be doing anyway.
The t 8 thing to keep in mind about failure is that it's mother of success. Don’t give up easily. Learn to “live with yourself" even t 9 you may have failed. Maybe this will help you s 10 in what you are doing in the end.
