When starting college, most students enjoy a week’s stay on campus before classes actually begin. What should you do with that time? Below are several tips to ease (使熟悉) yourself into college life.
Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations (迎新会), campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture: What do students do for fiin? What are their favorite classes? What is the history of your university? It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are — such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center — will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won’t have to look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes, and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you’re worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings, a quick test run won’t hurt. That way, you will avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different times, so it’s a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.
21. By participating in campus welcome activities, freshmen can________ .
A. learn about campus culture
B. get their course schedule
C. have a physical examination
D. take an entrance test
22. Why are freshmen advised to have a quick test run between buildings ?
A. To see how many facilities they can use.
B. To avoid being late for future classes.
C. To help those getting lost on campus.
D. To practice running on their way to class.
23. When is it best for freshmen to start getting used to the new routine?
A. On the first day of their classes.
B. Before the orientation week.
C. After their first-day classes.
D. During the orientation week.
B
John Otway
John Otway has been playing music and making records in the UK for more than 40 years. Over the years he has released more than ten albums. He has played hundreds of concerts. He has written two autobiographies. He has worked with some of the country’s best musicians and he has even made a film about his life. But despite all of this, most people have never heard of him.
Otway released his first record in 1972, but it was the Punk Movement a few years later that really gave him his big chance. Otway wasn’t the greatest musician but his songs were always fun, and his performances on stage were always entertaining - there was a good chance he would fall off the stage at least once in each show. The punks liked him, and in 1977 he had a small hit when his single Really Free made it to No. 27 in the UK top 40 charts. Otway really enjoyed his success but unfortunately, no more came. Not one of his records over the next 30 years was a hit.
Although he never had much commercial success, Otway had a lot of very loyal fans. When someone asked him what he would like for his 50th birthday, his reply was: “A second hit.” His fans went out and bought as many copies of the new single Bunsen Burner as they could. And in October 2002, Otway finally saw his wish come true. In a chart that featured international superstars like Pink, Will Young and Oasis, Bunsen Burner made it to No. 9. Many high street shops refused to sell the record, saying that Otway was too old and unattractive for the teenage market. Otway didn’t care. He celebrated his success with an appearance on TV’s biggest music show Top of the Pops.
These days John Otway continues to play his music around the country, and there are always plenty of people who are happy to go and watch him perform. He’s a great example for anyone who loves making music. You don’t have to be young, good-looking (or even very talented) to enjoy a long career in the music business.
24. From paragraph 1, we know that ________.
A. John Otway has released hundreds of albums
B. John Otway never worked with best musicians
C. John Otway has written hundreds of autobiographies
D John Otway is not well-known in the UK as a musician
25. John Otway saw his wish come true when he released ________.
A. Really Free B. Bunsen Burner
C. Top of the Pops D. his first record
26. Why were some street shops unwilling to sell his single Bunsen Burner?
A. They thought it was terrible.
B. It wasn’t a very big hit.
C. John Otway didn’t want them to have it.
D. They thought teenagers would not like to buy it.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Musicians have to be young and attractive.
B. Success isn’t important in our life.
C. We should be determined to do what we love.
D. Musicians do much better as they get older.
C
When thinking about intelligence, we often place humans at the top of the ranks. However, there is a species whose intelligence is far more advanced and perhaps more similar to humans than we'd thought - crows (乌鸦).
In 2002, a crow named Betty wowed Oxford University by picking up a piece of wire in her cage and bending it at one end using another object to shape the wire into a hooked (钩状的)tool. The hooked tool was then used to lift a small container containing a pig's heart from inside a plastic tube for the bird to eat. Many years later, researchers found that bending tools was in fact, not that unusual for New Caledonian crows.
Part of the Corvid family of birds, the brains of New Caledonian crows and others within the family have been studied more closely. Corvids have shown amazing cognitive(认知的)abilities. Unlike humans, corvids do not have a neocortex—a brain structure that allows for advanced cognitive development. Instead, their brains are filled with neurons(神经元)which have enabled the birds to have similar mental capacities.
According to a paper published earlier this year, New Caledonians are fastidious about the type of plant stem (茎)used to make their hooked tools and are able to figure out what the best plant stem is for them. They are capable of looking for that plant stem even when it is disguised(伪装) with leaves from a different plant species. Crows are also able to apply their abilities to advanced problem-solving. Through only learning individual steps of a challenge, a crow successfully solved it by arranging the steps in the correct order. This shows the bird's ability to make judgements through context. Crows also seem to use their cleverness for fun, much like humans do, as young birds love to play.
New Caledonian crows have emotions and memories and are cognitively skilled animals. They just might not be so different from us humans after all!
28. How did Betty surprise the scientists?
A. She made a hooked tool.
B. She escaped from her cage.
C. She managed to lift a heavy container.
D. She showed great interest in a pig's heart.
29. What do we know about New Caledonian crows?
A. They remain unknown to humans.
B. They are quite different from other corvids.
C. Their brain structure is similar to that of humans.
D. Their cognitive abilities are decided by neurons.
30. What docs the underlined word “fastidious” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Guilty. B. Hesitant
C. Picky. D. Curious.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The intelligence of crows.
B. The survival skills of crows.
C. The development of the crow family.
D. The emotions and memories of crows.

Time spent alone during the pandemicled to positive effects on well-being across all ages, new research has found.
The study of more than 2,000 teenagers and adults found that most people experienced benefits from solitude during the early days of the global Covid-19 pandemic. All age groups experienced positive as well as negative effects of being alone. However, the researchers found that descriptions of solitude included more positive effects than negative. On average, well-being scores when participants were alone were 5 out of 7 across all ages, including adolescents aged 13—16.
Some study participants talked about worsening mood or well-being, but most described their experiences of solitude in terms of feeling skilled and feeling self-reliant. 43% of all respondents mentioned that solitude involved activities and experiences of spending time on skills-building and activities, and that was consistent across all ages. Meanwhile, self-connection and reliance on self was a major feature particularly for adults, who mentioned it twice as often as teenage participants.
Dr Netta Weinstein, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Reading said, “The conventional wisdom is that adolescents on the whole found that the pandemic was a negative experience, but we see in our study how components of solitude can be positive. Over those first few months of the pandemic here in the UK, we see that working adults were actually the most likely to mention aspects of worsening well-being and mood, but even those are not as commonly mentioned as more positive experiences of solitude.”
The researchers noted that the findings were taken from one phase of the Covid-19 pandemic during the summer of 2020, and recommended that follow-up data looks at experiences of solitude during challenging periods such as this one, and also more commonplace periods where daily solitude may look and feel different.
32. What did participants think of solitude?
A. It was time consuming. B. It involved too much activities.
C. It mostly decreased well-being. D. It made them more independent.
33. What information is mainly conveyed in paragraph 4?
A. Solitude is still beneficial to life despite some negative aspects.
B. The pandemic led to negative experiences on the whole.
C. The working adults complained of the decreasing well-being.
D. Adolescents in the study always disliked staying alone.
34. What do the researchers expect of the following-up study?
A. It’ll be different. B. It’ll be challenging.
C. It’ll get more periods involved. D. It’ll focus on data on the pandemic.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Joys of Solitude B. More Solitude, Better Welling-being
C. Welling-being across All Ages D. More Staying Alone, Less Enjoyment

People of all ages and nationalities are opening Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts to connect with friends, celebrities, and those who share similar interests as them. ___36___ Small businesses and corporations are also using it to develop closer relationships with their fans and attract new customers.
___37___ For starters, it can be an effective way to conduct market research. In the past, companies often spent millions on studies to determine what their customers wanted. However, they often had difficulties locating people who were interested in their products or services. Nowadays social media has simplified this process as many customers will follow or like the companies they purchase products from. Furthermore, online advertising campaigns through social media allow companies to specifically target people who like similar products as the ones they are selling.
___38___ It allows fans and customers to leave comments about companies, their products, or their services. In turn, these companies can evaluate this feedback and respond in a way that shows they truly care.
However, companies shouldn't jump into social media without a carefully-planned strategy, as this can cause more harm than good. A common mistake is putting new hires or outside consultants in charge of social media accounts. ___39___ Another mistake is using conservative, corporate language in posts and updates. On social media, people are looking for personalities they can connect with, so companies shouldn't shy away from using humor or being colorful. Finally, social media accounts should always provide value and other share-worthy content to fans, for that is the primary reason they became followers. ___40___
A. Social media has swept across the globe.
B. Social media isn't just for individuals though.
C. One company called Zippos does this extremely well.
D. The person controlling these accounts must be knowledgeable.
E. There are many ways that organizations can benefit from social media.
F. Social media also gives companies greater control over their brand image.
G. Only by following these tips, organizations can take their businesses to the next level.
