An increasing number of students worldwide are considering studying abroad. The application process varies from country to country. If you’re looking for a university with a strong international outlook but feel swept over by all the application options, here is some guidance to get you started.
UK
International students must apply to universities in the UK through a system known as Ucas. This system allows students to apply to up to five universities with just one application. It costs £20 for a single choice or £25 for more than one choice.
The application consists of a series of questions to determine the student’s schooling and predicted grades. The biggest part of the application form is the personal statement, in which applicants should describe their personal interests and related experiences.
Switzerland
Switzerland has four official languages and is bordered by five countries so it is no surprise that its universities are among the most international in the world. International applicants may need to take an entrance exam if they have a foreign school certificate, and must also prove that they have a good grasp of the French language, usually through taking a language exam. The full application costs 50 Swiss Francs for a holder of a Swiss diploma and 150 Swiss Francs for holders of foreign diplomas.
Canada
International applicants have to write up a personal profile as part of their application, which is very similar to the personal statement required for a UK university application. Students will also have to prove their English-language competency—there are nine ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard, which are listed on many university websites.
Singapore
The process of applying to a Singaporean university is very much alike, but overseas students may be delighted to find that the domestic applicants have to cover the same procedures: filling out an online application form and submit identification documents, supporting documents and an application fee of $20.
21.Which country requires international applicants know French well?
A.UK. B.Switzerland.
C.Canada. D.Singapore.
22.What part of the application is similar between the UK and Canada?
A.The application system. B.The number of universities.
C.The application cost. D.The personal statement.
23.What’s special about the application process in Singapore?
A.Applicants need to pay a lot. B.It is much simpler than elsewhere.
C.It’s no different for native students. D.The competition is even more fierce.

My doctor took me for a walk around the farm where she lives. I was physically and emotionally exhausted and discouraged by anxiety and depression.
The place was full of life. There were insects, horses, rabbits, and a cat. She told me to focus on my body in the environment.
When I was ill, I tended to retreat into my mind and disconnect from here and now. So, when I met a horse named Fira, I expected nothing.
As I got closer to Fira, she nuzzled her nose into my chest, putting a gentle pressure over my heart. Something happened inside me: I felt as if I had reached a wellspring of past hurts, fears and failings. I began to melt emotionally.
I patted Fira’s nose and breathed in her smell. I found I didn’t have to concentrate on feeling better; Fira helped me feel loved and safe.
I worked with Fira often, learning basic communication and leading methods to work together with her. Initially, I wasn’t sure exactly what one would do with a horse except riding it. But I knew that Fira had touched me in an uncommon way and had made me feel better. She connected with me by responding to my emotional state and reflecting it back to me in an open, affectionate way.
In my meetings with Fira, I found that I lost my usual self-consciousness, and I would focus entirely on communicating.
I learned to live in the present, to focus on what was happening this day, in this moment, in this place. I learned to forget the past, with all its hurts. I learned to forget the future, which hasn’t happened yet. When you stand beside a horse, you exist completely in the moment.
With Fira by my side, I saw into a life in which trust comes first, and compassion follows.
I found a deep peace in leading her along a path, by using my own power of intention to indicate whether to start, stop, turn left or turn right. I felt an inner quiet and even joy. My work with this horse was part of a journey out of a very dark night in my soul.

A master of words, a literary genius and a philosopher, Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is known by many as the greatest writer of all time. Even in 2020, 110 years after his death, his two greatest masterpieces, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, continue to be widely read, appreciated and highly influential.
“If the world could write by itself, it would write like Tolstoy,” the Russian author Isaak Babel once said. Tolstoy’s realistic fiction is famous for its powers of observation and ability to mine the depths of human consciousness, such as the psychological exploration of a married woman in Anna Karenina. In War and Peace, Tolstoy also describes Russia’s national soul and expresses public unity through his many characters. His characters feel alive; they grow, they change and they stick in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned.
Tolstoy’s influence on literature is without comparison. Authors regularly mention his novels as their highest ambition, works that they could only dream of writing themselves. American writer Francis Scott called Tolstoy the “greatest of all novelists” in his essay. He wrote, “from his first words, we can be sure of one thing at any rate – here is a man who sees what we see, who proceeds, too, as we are accustomed to proceeding, not from the outside inwards but from the inside outwards.”
“He defends fundamental values such as love, friendship, and family relations. He gives positive answers to the questions mankind is asking. In this sense he gives more hope,” Tolstoy’s great-great grandson, Vladimir Ilyich Tolstoy, said.
Tolstoy’s message of peace has even had an effect on the real world. He inspired the leader of India’s independence movement, Mahatma Ghandi, and his philosophy of non-violence over the course of a year in which they wrote letters to each other.
28.What does the second paragraph intend to tell us?
A.The writing style of Tolstoy.
B.Tolstoy’s influence on other authors.
C.The characters in Tolstoy’s works.
D.The introduction to the greatest works of Tolstoy.
29.Which words can best describe Tolstoy according to the passage?
A.Humorous and caring.
B.Determined and optimistic.
C.Productive and hard-working.
D.Insightful and peace-loving.
30.How does the author introduce Tolstoy in this passage?
A.By contrasting with other authors.
B.By analyzing characteristics of his works.
C.By quoting comments and opinions.
D.By describing his deeds in life.
31.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Tolstoy and His Works
B.Tolstoy’s Life and Achievements
C.War and Peace: a Great Masterpiece
D.Tolstoy: a Writer Beyond Comparison
D
Babies are surrounded by human language, always listening and processing. Eventually, they put sounds together to produce a “Daddy” or a “Mama”. But what still confuses neuroscientists is exactly how the brain works to put it all together.
To figure it out, a team of researchers turned to a frequent stand-in (代替) for babies when it comes to language learning: the song-learning zebra finch. “We’ve known songbirds learn their song by first forming a memory of their father’s song or another adult’s song. Then they use that memory to guide their song learning,” said Neuroscientist Todd Roberts. “It’s been a long -term goal of the field to figure out how or where in the brain this memory is. This type of imitative learning that birds do is very similar to the type of learning that we engage in regularly—particularly when we’re young, we use it to guide our speech learning.”
Roberts and his team had a feeling that the interface (交叉区域) between sensory areas and motor areas in the brain was critical for this process, and they focused on a group of brain cells called the NIf.
“In order to prove that we could identify these circuits, we thought if we could implant a false memory.” First, they used a virus to cause the neurons (神经元) in the birds’ NIf to become sensitive to light. Then, using a tiny electrode as a flashlight, they activated (激活) the neurons. The length of each pulse of light corresponded with the amount of time the neurons would fire. And the birds’ brains interpreted that time period as the length of each note.
Soon enough, the birds began to practice the notes they had learned, even though they never really heard the sounds. Amazingly, the birds produced them in the correct social situations. The researchers say this is the first time anybody has found exactly a part of the brain necessary for generating the sorts of memories needed to copy sounds.
“This line of research is going to help us identify where in the brain we encode memories of relevant social experiences that we use to guide learning. We know that there are several neurodevelopmental disorders in people that have really far-reaching effects on this type of learning.”
32.The zebra finch is researched because its song-learning mode ________.
A.decides whether it will sing songs
B.helps it to say “Daddy” or “Mama”
C.is like the way babies learn speech
D.reflects its talent for imitating its father’s song
33.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The interface in the brain.
B.Guidance from adults.
C.Imitative learning type like birds’.
D.The way of regular learning.
34.What can we learn from the research led by Roberts?
A.Scientists activated some neurons by using an electrode.
B.A bird only sings what it heard before.
C.The brain produces tiny electrodes.
D.Birds are sensitive to light.
35.What do the Roberts’ team expect of this line of research?
A.A change in our way of listening and processing.
B.A chance to have relevant social experiences.
C.A better knowledge of the secrets of learning.
D.Identification of neurodevelopmental disorders.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched(栖息)on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you that it’s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?”
At this time some expression of irritation (恼怒)was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff(生硬回绝). “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.

Dear Peter,
Knowing that you will come to China for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, I’m very delighted. As for how to improve your spoken Chinese in a short time, I’d like to give you some suggestions.
To begin with, make more Chinese friends in your daily life, and you can practice your spoken Chinese with them. What’s more, listening to Chinese songs and watching Chinese movies are also good ways, which can help you broaden your horizons and improve your listening skills. Last but not least, the more Chinese tests you take, the more progress you will make.
I hope you’ll make great progress in oral Chinese.
Yours sincerely,

六、读后续写(共1小题;共25分)
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best day.”
