He planted some seeds in it. But at that time I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden. One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!I panicked for a moment, but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are so big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty.Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and I admitted, “Dad wanted a salad, but the garden was a disaster. I didn’t want to disappoint him so I went to the store.” She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. “Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this is one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.4.Christine originally said she would do the gardening because she . A.knew it was important to her fatherB.wanted to improve her gardening skillsC.was asked by her father to do itD.was interested in growing vegetables5.Which of the following was a problem in the garden?A.Animals often dug in the garden.B.Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots.C.The plants were given too much water.D.The vegetables were marked incorrectly.6.Christine could secretly make the salad from store-bought vegetables because . A.her father couldn’t see the garden’s progressB.her father was in hospital at that timeC.her mother helped her to buy the vegetablesD.her mother helped her to make a spray7.What did Christine learn through her experience of gardening?A.Always prepare for a rainy day.B.Don’t be disappointed by bugs.C.Hard work can be rewarding.D.Working alone produces results.C Most kids grow up learning they cannot draw on the walls. But it might be time to unlearn that training — this summer, a group of culture addicts, artists and community organizers are inviting New Yorkers to write all over the walls of an old house on Governor’s Island. The project is called Writing On It All, and it’s a participatory writing project and artistic experiment that has happened on Governor’s Island every summer since 2013. “Most of the participants are people who are just walking by or are on the island for other reasons, or they just kind of happen to be there,” Alexandra Chasin, artistic director of Writing On It All, tells Smithsonian.com. The 2016 season ran through June 26 and featured sessions facilitated by everyone from dancers to domestic workers. Each session has a theme, and participants are given a variety of materials and prompts and asked to cover surfaces with their thoughts and art. This year, the programs ranged from one that turns the house into a collaborative essay to one that explores the meaning of exile (流放). Governor’s Island is a national historic landmark district long used for military purposes. Now known as “New York’s shared space for art and play”, the island, which lies between Manhattan and Brooklyn in Upper New York Bay, is closed to cars but open to summer tourists who flock for festivals, picnics, adventures, as well as these “legal graffiti (涂鸦)” sessions. The notes and art scribbled (涂画) on the walls are an experiment in self-expression. So far, participants have ranged in age from 2 to 85. Though Chasin says the focus of the works is on the activity of writing, rather than the text that ends up getting written, some of the works that come out of the sessions have stuck with her. “One of the sessions that moved me the most was state violence on black women and black girls,” says Chasin, explaining that in one room, people wrote down the names of those killed because of it. “People do beautiful works and leave beautiful messages.”8.What does the project Writing On It All invite people to do?A.Unlearn their training in drawing.B.Participate in a state graffiti show.C.Cover the walls of an old house with graffiti.D.Exhibit their artistic creations in an old house.9.What did the project participants do during the 2016 season?A.They were free to scribble on the walls whatever came to their mind.B.They expressed their thoughts in graffiti on the theme of each session.C.They learned the techniques of collaborative writing.D.They were required to cooperate with other creators.10.What kind of place is Governor’s Island?A.It is a historic site that attracts tourists and artists.B.It is an area now accessible only to tourist vehicles.C.It is a place in Upper New York Bay formerly used for exiles.D.It is an open area for tourists to enjoy themselves year round.11.What does Chasin say about the project?A.It just focused on the sufferings of black females.B.It helped expand the influence of graffiti art.C.It has started the career of many creative artists.D.It has created some meaningful artistic works.D Thailand’s capital Bangkok is both attractive and wonderful, a city of glass towers and concrete buildings crowded with nearly 10 million people. The ground beneath is spongy(松软多孔的) and moist. Imagine a brick resting on top of a birthday cake. That’s Bangkok-it’s sinking into the earth at an alarming rate. Thailand’s disaster specialists have been warning of this coming disaster for years. One expert has said he’s worried about Bangkok resembling Atlantis. Another previously told GlobalPost that the city will be under five feet of water by 2030. The latest estimates suggest that Bangkok is now sinking as fast as two centimeters per year in parts of the city. The predictions for 2100 are even more terrible. By then, Bangkok will be fully submerged and unlivable. Like global warming, which will accelerate the city’s submersion by raising the sea level, Bangkok’s sinking problems are repeatedly shrugged off.But the monsoon season, currently underway, tends to bring this crisis to mind. A nasty storm can suddenly turn Bangkok’s streets into gushing streams. Sewers overflow, taxis move through dirty water and, occasionally, kids can pick up displaced fish. Anond Snidvongs, director of the Southeast Asia Regional Research Center, predicts the city’s outskirts will be the first to go. Parts of the shoreline beyond Bangkok are already lined with pumps that make noises and help to transform invading seawater. They don’t always work. During heavy rains, salt water flows in the streets of the city. Bangkok is swallowed up a little more each day. Experts tend to offer two solutions. The first is to put up a massive seawall that could cost nearly $3 billion-nearly 1 percent of Thailand’s current GDP. The second option is to give up entirely and move the capital to higher ground.12.Why is Bangkok sinking into the earth?A.Because its buildings are too heavy.B.Because it has an overlarge population.C.Because its underground is too loose.D.Because it is resting on top of a lake.13.What is the most likely meaning of the underlined phrase “shrugged off” in Paragraph 3?A.Ignored. B.Valued.C.Agreed. D.Misunderstood.14.What information does Paragraph 4 express?A.The optimism and wisdom shown by the city people.B.The present serious situation faced by Bangkok.C.The weakness of the pumps to transform water.D.The huge power produced by the surrounding seawater.15.What’s the best title of the passage?A.Bangkok Is DisappearingB.The Removal of BangkokC.Thailand’s Capital Needs a SeawallD.An Attractive City Under Water第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Feel Worthy16. It might be when spending time around others or when you’re by yourself but it’s often spurred on by feeling that others are more successful, privileged or more clever than you. The following tips may help you get out of the suffering situation. 17. Comparison weakens your self-reliance and causes you to feel less than, because instead of concentrating on what you have, you only see what you don’t have. Think of a bloom—it blooms amid many other blooms and does not compare itself to all those blooms; instead, it does what it was made to do—bloom.  Learn how to appreciate other people’s achievements.18. If you appreciate other people’s work, others will also appreciate you, which is a form of respect and satisfaction that adds to your sense of self-worth. Make new friends. Surround yourself with like-minded people. In this way, you can create your own space, and you will feel worthy. Stop criticizing yourself. Every person has certain limits—you are not a super human who can(or even should) do everything.19.   Involve yourself in community services, you will feel confident.20. You will feel worthy, when you see the love for yourself reflected in other people’s eyes. A.Avoid comparing yourself with others.B.Try to ignore others who are surrounding you.C.There are times in life when you may not feel worthy.D.Instead, enjoy your own individual qualities and abilities.E.Criticizing others does little to help build your self-worth.F.Therefore, think of yourself before others can help you relax.G.Often helping others further shapes and builds up your character.第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 As the temperature approached as high as 90 °F last July 4th, three police officers went into a Foods Market to get something 21 to drink. He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was eating. His socks never made them into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else. One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since morning. “You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m not cleaning today.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read. At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place on the table. Mom’s spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called. “There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot. When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt!”注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。Paragraph 1: However, Mom was still reading and said nothing.                                        Paragraph 2: “Mom?” said Arthur. “Tomorrow can you show me how to do the laundry so I can wash my socks?”
