Most kids can walk into a library or bookstore and find hundreds of books to read. But it’s not that simple for kids who are blind. They read in a different way. Jenny Lee and other braille (盲文) transcribers take the printed words of a book and change them into a code of raised dots. Blind people can read these dots with their fingers. To know what braille feels like, take a ballpoint pen and press hard onto a piece of paper. Now turn the paper over and touch the raised dot made by the pen point.
When Lee first saw the dots of the braille alphabet, she wondered if she’d ever be able to read and write them easily. She took a class and practised hard for about six months before she passed the final exam: she had to convert 35 pages of a book into braille. Today, Lee works for a publisher. One of her jobs is to change children’s books into braille.
To do this, Lee first types the story into a computer and then uses a computer program to translate it into the braille code. Next, she looks over the translation several times to make sure it’s mistake-free. After that, a copy of the braille story is printed with a special printer. Then Lee and a proofreader work together to find and correct any mistakes. When a book is ready, many copies of it are printed. Afterwards, some are sold through websites and others are sent to libraries.
Sometimes, going over a story again and again gets tiring. That’s when Lee takes a break. Several of Jenny Lee’s co-workers, who are blind, use guide dogs. When the animals aren’t working, Lee likes spending a few minutes with them. To her, playing with dogs “is always a pick-me-up in the middle of the day”.
“I love this mission,” Lee says. “Through my brain power and my fingers, I am putting the dots into some kid’s hands.”
4. How does the writer explain what braille feels like?
A. By explaining what braille words look like.
B. By asking readers to experience it themselves.
C. By describing how blind people read books.
D. By giving examples of different braille words.
5. What was Lee’s first reaction to braille?
A. She was excited to get a new skill.
B. She was amazed at the clever idea.
C. She believed it would be difficult to learn.
D. She realized she could teach it herself.
6. What does the underlined word “pick-me-up” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. A discussion to release work stress.
B. Something to improve one’s appetite.
C. A free ride accompanied with a guide dog.
D. Something to help restore one’s spirit.
7. What does Lee think of her job?
A. Profitable and hopeful. B. Relaxing and helpful.
C. Tiring but meaningful. D. Boring but challenging.
C
Older adults with a better sense of smell may live longer than those who have a poor sense of smell, a new study suggests. The study was a project of researchers in the United States that was ongoing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2,300 men and women to identify 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults scores, from 0 to as high as 12, based on how many smells they identified correctly.
During the years of follow-up investigation, over 1,200 of the subjects died. When the study was launched, none of the adults were weak. They could walk a little under half a kilometer, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted that those with a weak nose were 30 percent more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.
Honglei Chen, a doctor with Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, was the lead writer of a report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good-to-excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign for worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing disorders.
The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning for poor health in older age that goes beyond dementia or other neurode generative(神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of a weakening of the mind or body.
8. What do you know about the study mentioned?
A. The study involved researchers from the world.
B. All the participants were of different ages.
C. The study began to be performed about 13 years ago.
D. 2 ,300 men and women were young and healthy.
9. What was the situation like at the beginning of the study?
A. More than 1,200 of the participants passed away.
B. Many of the subjects were found with health problems.
C. All the subjects were independent of others when walking.
D. One third of the participants had a poor smell sense.
10. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. People with a poor sense of smell have heart disease.
B. You should be careful with your health if you smell poorly.
C. People with a poor sense of smell won't suffer from cancer.
D. Most of the elder people may have the dementia disease.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Strong Sense of Smell May Be Linked to Longer Life
B. Old People Tend to Have a Poor Sense of Smell
C.A Number of Factors Result in Longer Life
D. Being Ill Means Losing the Sense of Smell
D
Those who are concerned that robots are taking over the world can rest easy—for now. Though the androids have proved useful at performing ordinary tasks, they are not ready for the greatest time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan’s Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff are being replaced by humans.
The first location of the unique hotel opened in July 2015 was at Nagasaki’s Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park. The hotel’s owner, Hideo Sawada, promised the hotel to be managed primarily by robots. Guests were greeted and checked-in by a dinosaur robot, while a cute android called Churi, placed inside each room, provided information about attractions. Not surprisingly, the lodging, recognized in 2016 as the world’s first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in curious visitors from all around the world.
But as the years have passed, the hotel’s main draw is becoming less novel and more unsatisfactory. Also as the robots are “aging”, they are costing more to repair. Among the 283 androids being replaced are the chain’s two dinosaur receptionists. In addition to scaring young guests, they are also unable to photocopy guests’ passports, forcing human employees to step in each time. Also out are the cute Churi robots, which annoyed guests by interrupting their conversations. For example, one guest told The Wall Street Journal that Churi mistook his snoring for a command and kept asking him to repeat his request all night.
Sawada told The Wall Street Journal, “When you actually use robots you realize there are places where they aren’t needed—or just annoy people.” While Sawada may be cutting back on his use of androids, the recently-opened Smart LYZ Hotel and the Fly Zoo Hotel in China, are run entirely by robots, with not a human in sight. Whether the employees have more competence than those “hired” by the Henn-na Hotel chain remains to be seen.
12. What makes Japan’s Henn-na Hotel unique?
A.Its convenient location. B. Its advanced equipment.
C.Its robot employees. D. Its successful management.
13. What is the author’s purpose with the example in paragraph 3?
A. To entertain readers. B. To persuade people not to book the hotel.
C. To introduce Churi’s functions. D. To prove Churi’s drawback.
14. What does the owner of Japan’s Henn-na Hotel think of his robot staff now?
A. Attractive. B. Disappointing. C. Pioneering. D. Costly.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Robot Staff Are Fired For No Competence.
B. The Boom of Robots-staffed Hotel.
C. Robots Are Taking Over the World.
D. The First Robots-staffed Hotel Won Guinness World Record.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
As is often the case, when we wake up feeling sleepy and with dark circles under eyes, many of us often make a decision: “I’m going to bed earlier tomorrow!” we are so determined. ____16_____. We are still absorbed in what we are doing without realizing it is already too late the next day. This behavior is called “bedtime procrastination” (睡眠拖延症), and results from lack of self-control and our body clock.
_____17______ According to a study carried out by a group of health psychologists, 53 percent of the 2,400 participants said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice a week. They delayed bedtime because they couldn’t stop doing other trivial things (琐事), which were keeping them up in the first place.
People who generally have trouble resisting temptations (诱惑) and following their intentions firmly are also more likely to delay going to bed. They find it hard to control themselves.____18______. Our body clock also plays an important role when it comes to bedtime. Those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning. Night owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school._____19_______.
Therefore, if we want to cure our bedtime procrastination, the intention to go to bed earlier is not enough. _____20_______. We should have a clear understanding that bedtime procrastination is a big problem. The choices we make could turn out to be pretty important for our health.
A. Bedtime procrastination is a common problem.
B. It will have extreme effect on our health sooner or later.
C. Yet, lack of self-control is not the only thing to blame.
D. Unfortunately, chances are that we don’t stick to our promise.
E. It’s their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime.
F. Biological processes need to support this intention.
G. So we just need to take action to change our sleep model.

In the past three years, many activities had been organized by our school. What impressed me mostly was an activity calling “Learning to Farm”. In an autumn afternoon, we went to a farm, where we learned knowledge and had many fun. Having been in the city for such a long time, we were more than happy to go to a countryside. After we arrived, we divided into three groups. Some students learned how to raise pigs, some worked in the garden, and the other helped the farmers with the work in the fishpond. It was not until it was totally dark when we stopped working. Though we were tired out, but we felt pleased on our way back home.
