For some of us who long to travel, it can be difficult to find someone to journey with. Friends and family members are tied down in jobs, struggling to save money, and don't always want to go to the same places. The solution, of course, is to go alone.
    Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne is a hot-spot travel destination, which has beautiful beaches as well as busy and lively city life. Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo (单独的)travelers go there. Melbourne is incredibly easy to get around because you can walk or bike anywhere!
    Thailand
Thailand is great for solo travelers—perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mentality, which promotes equality among the sexes. Thailand is known for its friendly hospitality, and as a travel hot-spot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. Overall known for being very cheap, especially in the north, it's a good choice if you want to get away on a budget.
    Bhutan
Bhutan is one of the most cultural countries in the world. It is also home to the world's highest unclimbed peak, Gangkhar Puensum. The mountain is sacred (神圣的)and entry is only possible on a pre-booked tour, where you are accompanied around by your own personal guide. Plastic bags have been banned in Bhutan since1999 and in 2004, it became the first country in the world to outlaw(宣布非法)tobacco.
    Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a great place if you're looking for adventure, with surfing, volcanoes and other recreational activities. You'll never get a chance to feel lonely because there's an abundance of exciting adventures to experience! Costa Rica has never seen political unrest, class struggles or revolutions commonly associated with other Latin American Countries. What's more, it doesn't have or need an army because it's such a peaceful country.
    21. Which place is suitable for travelers short of money?
    A. Melbourne, Australia. B. Thailand. C. Bhutan. D. Costa Rica.
    22. What can we learn about travelling in Bhutan?
    A. You can climb the mountain without booking ahead.
    B. You can prepare some plastic bags for your rubbish.
    C. You can experience the rich culture there.
    D. Smoking is allowed at the foot of the mountain.
    23. Where does this text probably come from?
    A. A historical document. B. A science magazine.
    C.A travel guide. D. A book review.
    B
If you were asked to imagine a scientist, what image would come to your mind? The idea that most of the kids have is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and cups of colorful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority regard scientists as strange people who spend a lot of time working in a lonely lab. However, the reality is quite different.
Recently I’ve had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my lab and into Costa Rica. It has a large amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species, which represents nearly 4% of the species worldwide!
First we worked to protect wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮龟) protection center. We helped the volunteers to remove rubbish from the beach to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic (地壳的) activity relating to earthquakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rainforest. On the last day we got a professional introduction of rocket (火箭) science and learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station.
During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesn’t mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist is the one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping protect wildlife, learning about earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring!
    24. According to Paragraph 1, scientists are often believed ________.
    A. to do experiments in messy labs B. to spend too much time in labs
    C. to wear clothes in a different way D. to work in dangerous conditions
    25. In Costa Rica, the author ________.
    A. experienced an earthquake B. took part in rocket experiments
    C. picked up rubbish on the beach D. helped the volunteers collect turtle eggs
    26. What does the author learn about science from his experience?
    A. Science is full of boring experiments.
    B. Science is related to chemical liquids.
    C. Science is more than working in a lab.
    D. Science is about wildlife and earthquakes.
    27. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. What a Scientist Is Like B. Where a Scientist Works
    C. How I Travelled in Costa Rica D. Why I Chose to Study Science
    C
Do you think alien beings exist somewhere in the universe? It seems like Mars, our closest neighbor, has inspired the most science fiction as the place where aliens are most likely to come from. Recent Mars probes (探测) have shown us that there is no life on that planet—at least not now. But that does not mean that life does not exist elsewhere—after all, the universe is really big. A lot of scientific research is going on in the search for “extraterrestrial life”.
Think about it—why should the seven billion people on this little planet be the only living beings in the universe? It would, in fact, seem logical that this is not the case. So scientific research in this matter is based around the idea of finding other planets that have environments that can support life —environments similar to the Earth. The search is on for the evidence of the existence, or earlier existence of life: from very wise beings to simple organisms (有机物).
So far, there have been a number of theories as to which planetary bodies may have an atmosphere that can support such life and therefore deserve closer attention. As for places within our own Milky Way Galaxy, it has been assumed over the decades that Mars and Venus, as well as some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, may have been hosts for life. Now, as technologies have improved and we can obtain measurements of the composition of the atmosphere on extra-solar planets, the chances of finding “alien” life forms are increasing.
There has been a theory that some of the planets in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Gliese 581 may be able to support life. In 2007, scientists discovered exoplanet Gliese 581c—and felt that its atmosphere was most suitable for supporting life. But further research revealed that it would not. Now, attention has been turned to Gliese 581d, at the outer edge of the star’s habitable zone. The main standards for deciding whether a planetary body can be life-supporting are atmospheric conditions which allow the existence of water. Gliese 581 is about 20.4 light years away from the Earth, so even if life does exist there, the distance would mean that communication would be unlikely.
Having said this—who says alien life forms (if they exist) need water?
    28. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Life existing outside of the Earth.
    B. The evidence of the existence of life.
    C. Other faraway planets in the universe.
    D. Creatures known from science fictions.
    29. What makes it possible for people to find “alien beings”?
    A. Modern scientific theories. B. Atmospheric conditions.
C Environments similar to the Earth. D. Advanced technologies.
    30. From the passage, we know that _________.
    A. the atmosphere of Gliese 581c was most suitable for life
    B. it is not certain whether alien life forms need water or not
    C. the 7 billion people on the Earth are the only beings in the universe
    D. the distance of 20.4 light years makes it impossible to find life on Gliese 581d
    31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
    A. Do Aliens Exist? B. Is Mars Suitable for Life?
    C. Are Alien Life Forms Various? D. Can We Communicate with Aliens?
    D
Convincing someone to change their mind is really the process of convincing them to change their tribe (部落). If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too.
The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, to combine them into your tribe, to bring them into your circle. Now, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.
The British philosopher Alain de Botton suggests that we simply share meals with those who disagree with us: “Sitting down at a table with a group of strangers has the incomparable and odd benefit of making it a little more difficult to hate them without punishment. Prejudice and conflict between groups of people from different nations or races feed off abstraction. However, during a meal, something about handing dishes around, unfolding napkins (餐巾纸) at the same moment, even asking a stranger to pass the salt makes us less likely to hold the belief that the outsiders who wear unusual clothes and speak in distinctive accents deserve to be sent home or attacked. For all the large-scale political solutions which have been proposed to ease racial or cultural conflict, there are few more effective ways to promote tolerance between suspicious neighbours than to force them to eat supper together.”
Perhaps it is not difference, but distance that produces tribalism and unfriendliness. As proximity increases, so does understanding. I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” Facts don’t change our minds. Friendship does.
The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami once wrote, “Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.”
When we are in the moment, we can easily forget that the goal is to connect with the other side, cooperate with them, befriend them, and integrate them into our tribe. We are so caught up in winning that we forget about connecting. It’s easy to spend your energy labeling people rather than working with them.
The word “kind (family and relatives)” originated from the word “kin (old fashion of family and relatives).” When you are kind to someone, it means you are treating them like family. This, I think, is a good method for actually changing someone’s mind. Develop a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a book. Be kind first, be right later.
    32. People are likely to change their mind when they _________.
    A. change their beliefs B. are made friends with
    C. move to a new community D. are given somewhere to go
    33. What does the underlined word “proximity” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Nearness. B. Action. C. Communication. D. Politeness.
    34. The author quotes from Haruki Murakami to imply that _________.
    A. breaking down one’s reality is easy
    B. kindness is more important than right
    C. arguing and winning are not important
    D. losing one’s identity is a painful process
    35. According to the passage, sharing meals is effective in building connections
    because it ________.
    A. pleases people with different beliefs or accents
    B. makes people focus on eating rather than conflicts
    C. brings benefits to the people having dinner together
    D. promotes understanding and tolerance among people

You put a great deal of effort into reaching the college of your dreams. It’s time to get started. But what’s next? The beginning of college life can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adapt to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience.
    ● To save time and money, use the college’s bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. 36 It’s also a good way to be environmentally aware.
    ● 37 You might not even need all of the recommended books. New textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Try buying used textbooks — it’s a good way to save money and serves the purpose as well.
    ● Do never look at college life as endless parties and social activities. There is a whole lot more to college if you’re serious about graduating. 38
    ● Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your studies. If the dorm doesn’t suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. 39 Find a quiet area, like the library, to do your work. Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.
    ● 40 Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid foods that are processed or high in sugar. The “freshman 15” is real. Many college students gain at least 15 pounds during their freshmen year.
    ● While electives (选修课) can be helpful when figuring out your major, you shouldn’t entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having too much on your plate can hurt your grades.
    A. Be mindful of your diet.
    B. Take relaxed attitudes to your diet.
    C. Don’t take part in too many after-class activities.
    D. Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts.
    E. You won’t have to locate or afford a place to park either.
    F. The best location for your studies isn’t always your dorm.
    G. Having a good college experience is all about balancing work and fun.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare(瞪眼看)at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. "What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.
"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

W: You’re late again. Did your car break down?
M: No, I forgot to set my alarm clock, so I slept overtime.
    Text 3
M: I wonder if our children will still be able to breathe clean air, drink clean water and see a blue sky.
W: Yes. I think it’s time man learned to live in harmony with the earth instead of destroying it.
    Text 4
M: You are a good piano player. How long have you been playing the piano?
W: I’ve been playing the piano since I was 6 years old. About 9 years ago.
M: Really? That’s a long time. I’m also planning to learn to play these days.
    Text 5
W: Gary, hello. How are you? You look taller and stronger than before. I remember little Gary, the best student in the class.
M: No, you were a better student than I was, but I remember a little girl with glasses. You’re different, too.
    Text 6
M: Lucy, are you going out?
W: Yes. I need a new dress for Jenny’s birthday party.
M: I’m going downtown, too. Could you give me a lift?
W: Sure. By the way, do you have a membership card for the Pretty Girls Store?
M: Yes. I often buy dresses for Ann in that store. I can get a 20 percent discount on everything there.
W: Great. Could we go there first? I want to use your card.
M: Why not? It’s still 2:00. I’ll still have enough time to choose some books.
W: So you are going to the City Library, aren’t you?
M: No, I’m going to buy some books for Ann. She likes reading.
    Text 7
W: Hi, Mr. Smith. I wonder if you’re free on New Year’s Eve. We’d like you to come to our New Year’s party.
M: Thank you. I’d love to come. Where will it be?
W: In our classroom at 6:00 pm. By the way, could you sing a song for us at the party?
M: I’m afraid I’m not that good at singing, but I’ll try. How about an English folk song?
W: That would be wonderful. Our monitor has been wanting to ask you to sing. We’ll also invite several other teachers to the party. Each of them will perform something for us, and I think the headmaster will give a speech before the party.
M: Sounds great. I hope there will be some fun games at the party.
W: Oh, of course, and we’ll all share our New Year resolutions at the end of the party.
    M: I’m sure it’ll be a great party.
W: Yes, I hope we’ll all have a wonderful time.
    Text 8
W: Mr. Smith, may I talk with you for a moment?
M: Of course. Come in, please.
W: I’ve come to talk to you about my grade on my last paper. I want to know why I was given an “F”.
M: Well, yours was so similar to that of another student in the class, and I think that you’d not done it yourself.
W: I did work closely with my roommate Jean, but let me explain why. A week before the paper was due, I was too sick to do my research. Jean agreed to help me. But it was really on my own.
M: Well, you’d been given a month to work on the paper. Wouldn’t it be better to get ahead rather than to wait until the last minute? Each student was supposed to prepare it individually. I’m afraid my decision remains the same. However, if you’re willing to make an oral presentation about the government’s role in running the economy, I’ll give you extra credit.
W: Thank you. I’ll do that. But when?
M: My assistant Ms. White will inform you as soon as it is decided.
    W: OK. Goodbye!
    Text 9
M: Good morning. This is Spa Heaven. How can I help you?
W: Well, basically, I think I’m too tired and looking for some way to relax.
M: OK, sure. Did you know that we recently have a special offer which allows non-members to use our facilities without having to pay the membership fee?
    W: Oh, that’s great.
M: Yeah, but the offer is just until the end of this month. Anyway, let me tell you a little about the facilities at Spa Heaven. First, we have a fitness center where you can have a weight training so that you can lose some weight.
W: And that sounds good, but I’m not really interested in getting fit. I just want to get rid of my tiredness. Mm, well, I’d like to go swimming and I find that helps me relax.
M: We have two 25-meter pools here.
W: Can you tell me how much that costs?
M: Well, for non-members, it costs just $ 10 for each time.
W: OK. I think I need to do something more relaxing, you know, like yoga. Do you have anything like that?
M: Well, yes. And during the special offer period, non-members can take part for just $ 35 per class.
W: OK. Thanks very much for your help. I’ll come down this afternoon and arrange a yoga class.
M: Sure, I’m looking forward to seeing you then.
    Text 10
W: A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling left out at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her, and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around, maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom — thinking about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile and be friendly. Offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” at lunchtime. If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and pretty soon you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
