One afternoon in August, when he reached out to measure some materials, he lost his balance and fell down. The accident left the 55—year—old unable to use his hands and feet. So he had to arrive at the strange London to begin his long recovery period.Having long had an interest in birds, he discovered Horatio's Garden London & South East before long which belonged to the hospital. Then he visited this garden at least once a day.Working in the garden helped his hands to function normally. Not only that, he also felt that there was a different feeling when he was in nature. He loved the sweet smell of the flowers and the colors of the plants. It's therapeutic(治愈的).Fraser was eventually introduced to Ashley Edwards, the head gardener, in September, for one—to—one gardening lessons. “When Curtis first came in, he had very little hand function and was hardly able to hold tools,” says Edwards. “He required a lot of help in the gardening classes but, as each week goes by, I’ve seen a huge improvement in his movements.”Fraser recalls the first lesson: “It was 80 good. We were chatting away and the time went by so quickly. Soon, I could do things that I didn't think I would ever do again.”For Fraser, the garden offered relief(减轻) from the painful treatment. “It gave me clear thoughts. In the garden, I'd forget that I was in hospital. I'd come out and think, ‘Oh man, sill here’—but I'd get a good feeling from the garden.” Fraser has been in recovery for seven months and left hospital on March 1.The new gardener now suggests the garden to fellow patients, who return to tell him about its unique benefits. “That garden helped my recovery so much. Even for a little moment, I'd tell people to visit one. It can clear your mind.”4What was Fraser' s hobby?ADesigning houses. BWatching birds.CCollecting plants. DStudying materials.5What can we infer from Edwards' words?AGardening benefited Fraser.BFraser was unlucky.CFraser had a gift for gardening.DGarden tools were hard to use.6Why did Fraser advise patients to go to the garden?AIt was a nice place to chat.BThey could make more friends.CIt offered an escape from reality.DThey could get free classes there.7What can be the best title for the text?AAn Old Gardener BA Terrible ExperienceCGardening Gets Popular DGardening Works WondersC Surfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study. The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee's attention.” “People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university's website. “Having a short break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day's work, and as a result, increases productivity (生产效率),” he said. According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That's not always a good idea.” However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without.” he said.8What does the University of Melbourne study mainly show?APeople who surf the Internet are good employees.BNot everyone surfs the Internet for fun during office hours.CThe Internet is becoming more and more important in people's life.DSurfing the Internet for fun at times during office hours increases productivity.9Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as one of the most popular surfing activities?AWatching videos.BReading online news.CReading online novels.DPlaying online games.10The underlined word “block” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.Astop BorganizeCprotect Dseparate11What can we infer from the last paragraph?AThose who never surf the Internet have the lowest productivity.BSpending too much time surfing the Internet reduces productivity.CMost people don't surf the Internet in moderation during office hours.DPeople should spend as little time as possible surfing the Internet.  DA company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.A San Francisco-based company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then bonded together. This is done by a 3-D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while people are making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part called the sole(鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon, so we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products. For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shops in the near future.12How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?AThey are used to make shoes.BThey are buried or burned.CThey are changed into soft material.DThey are returned to factories for reuse.13What does the underlined word " knitted" in the third paragraph mean?ACombined. BFixed.CSpotted. DRepaired.14Which of the following directly helped to increase the sales of Rothy's shoes?AThe design and color.BThe reasonable price.CThe power of famous people.DThe company's advertisement.15. What is the purpose of the text?ATo advertise a new kind of shoes.BTo describe the process of making shoes.CTo introduce a new way of recycling plastic waste.DTo stress the importance of environmental protection. 第二节 (5小题;每小题2,满分10)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Are you spending your holidays sitting around bored with nothing to do?
