Celeste Ng, a new writer, has gained recognition for her first novel, Everything I Never Told You.
Ng's parents came from Hong Kong, China in the 1960s. Ng was born in America and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights, Ohio, in a family of scientists. Celeste went to Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award.
Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The main character is Lydia, a teenage girl, who is the favorite of three children born to a white mother and a Chinese-American father. The story is about Lydia's disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and exposed secrets as they search for their lost daughter.
Though the characters in this story are Asian, Ng says she didn't really want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story was about real people in her life. Because she grew up in America and doesn't speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian characters in the book.
The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the Editor's Pick for No.1 Best Book of the Year in 2014. Ng is still getting used to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have read her book. With so many readers, it's safe to say this is a book you should read. But if you're looking for a simple mystery, this book might not be for you. Most readers warn that you should not read this book unless you're prepared to cry.

I'm not much of a gardener. I love having beautiful flowers-but I don't have a good track record when it comes to making them grow.
A few months after our son left for the Middle East, my friend gifted me a box of tulip bulbs (郁金香球茎). She explained that these bulbs were put into the ground in the fall and lay sleeping all winter. They had all the nutrients they needed inside the bulb and would come out in the spring. ''When you see the leaves of the tiny flowers pushing toward the sun, you'll know that it's almost time for your son to come home. They'll give you what you need most.'' She walked me through the process of planting them. I thanked her — trying to show my gratitude for her gift.
It was a long winter — cold and dark. I endured both the weather and the loneliness and fear I felt with my son away. Dead leaves, frost and finally a heavy snow covered the area where I'd planted those flowers, and I soon forgot they were there.
Finally the weather began to warm. One day, as I walked down my front steps, I noticed an area of green. I bent down to inspect the situation more clearly and saw that those tulips had begun to grow, their tiny leaves forcing their way to the sun.
Day after day I noted the flowers' progress. And day after day, the time approached when my son would finally be home. Now with spring just around the corner, nothing could keep either of us from marching toward the light. Almost all of those bulbs bloomed. And with each brightly colored flower, I marked off one day closer to getting to hold my son in my arms again.
28. What can we know about the author?
A. She is a professional gardener.
B. She is not good at growing flowers.
C. She never plants flowers at home.
D. She often sends friends flowers as gifts.
29. Why did the writer forget the tulip bulbs soon?
A. The bitter winter reminded her of her son far away.
B. She was discouraged from making another attempt.
C. They failed to live through the cold and long winter.
D. She had no hope for beautiful flowers indeed.
30. What were those flowers mentioned in the last paragraph referred to?
A. A physical representation of the hope.
B. Things deep inside her heart and soul.
C.A lesson she will never forget completely.
D. The trouble she had in making them come out.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A dark winter with hope.
B. Planting hope in winter.
C. An area of green in spring.
D. Living a changeable life.

Five steps to better handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 32 Here are five steps that really work!
Get a great grasp
Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 33 Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡). 34 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
Lower the pressure
35 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.
36
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.
A. Play games
B. Ask for more advice
C. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.
D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.
E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.
F. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
G. The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At noon that day, I drove back to my house after the performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favorite violin.
"Thief!"
I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile, I asked, "Are you Mr. Ram's nephew, Michael? I'm his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You're really like him!"
On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, "Has my uncle gone out? I think I'd better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while."
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, "Do you like to play the violin so much?"
"Yes, but I'm so poor that I can't afford it," the boy replied.
"Then, I give this violin to you." The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper's photo.

Hopefully, you would accept our invitation if it is convenient for you. If you have any questions please call me at 88776655. I'm looking forward to your reply.

Paragraph 1:
A few years later, I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students. Fascinated by the gentle sound of one participant, I was wholeheartedly impressed by his wonderful performance and solid strength. As I flicked my eyes up to glance at the performer, I was so astonished to see a thin face, so familiar, yet now lit up with joy and confidence. The "thief"! For an instant, I was amazed that the kindness I offered to cover the boy's misconduct would made such a big difference!
Paragraph 2:
After the competition, "Michael" ran to me, holding a violin box. He asked with a tremble in his voice, with his thin face reddening with excitement, "Sir, do you recognize me? The nephew! It's your kindness that enlightens my life, so does your violin. Today, I can give back this violin to you without regret..." Tears welled up in my eyes. Never had I anticipated that a tiny white lie would inject such great power into others and change their life.
(Text 1)
M: I’d like to buy a copy of Professor Frank’s book on American culture. W: I’m sorry. The book has been out of print for some time now.
(Text 2)
W: Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Who usually does the cooking in your family?
M: My mother and my two aunts don’t let anyone else do anything except for the drinks. That includes all the sauces, salad, and place settings.
(Text 3)
M: When does the play start? My ticket says 7:30pm.
W: Well, that’s when it officially starts. They actually check tickets fifteen minutes earlier, and if you’re not seated when the lights go down five minutes before that, they won’t let you in.
(Text 4)
M: I used to hate math, but I’ve done much better since we had that new teacher.
W: I don’t enjoy the classes with the new teacher. Although he’s really good at explaining, he goes too far and makes it all a bit too simple.
(Text 5)
M: I read in the newspaper that the novel you are reading is excellent.
W: Yes. It’s really worth reading. I’ve read a lot of people saying they loved it.
M: Yeah, me too, though I’ve also read some negative reviews. They say it is just like another novel—that they were no original ideas.
W: Really? I didn’t know that.
(Text 6)
W: Our house is such a mess. I can never find anything. Have you seen my blue jacket? M: Sorry, no. Do you want to borrow my sister’s black jacket?
W: It’s too heavy. It’s not very cold outside.
M: Her green one might be OK. That’s not too heavy. W: Oh, yeah. Thanks.
M: Wow, that looks great. Where are you going?
W: I will buy Mary a dress first. Then we’ll go and see a movie together. It’s her birthday. M: That sounds like fun. Have a good time!
(Text 7)
M: We have a weekly schedule of evening activities, which anyone can attend if they choose. Every Sunday we show a film suitable for the whole family. Monday is dessert night. Our cook prepares a variety of desserts.
W: Umm...I’d like to be there for that.
M: Yes, it’s great. We get more serious towards the middle of the week, during our discussion night on Tuesday.
W: Discussion night?
M: Yes, we discuss different current events, you know, what’s happening that week in the news. And on Wednesday, we have lectures. We invite different experts to talk about local history on nature topics. Thursday night is totally different. That’s when we play games.
W: That sounds interesting!
(Text 8)
M: Hi, Judy. It’s Peter Kent from ABC Company. I’d like to tell you that we have received the machine and are quite satisfied with it, but we were disappointed that there wasn’t much choice of color.
W: Sorry to hear that. We will fax you the brochure this afternoon. It shows color pictures of all our models. M: Great.
W: Can we expect an order from you?
M: Yes, that’s why I’m calling. I want to order 500 machines. I wonder if you can make the delivery by the end of this month.
W: OK. We can do that. I will work out the agreement this evening. Would you be free to come over tomorrow morning to sign it?
M: I’m afraid I can’t. I’ve got a staff meeting to attend then. Shall we meet at lunchtime? W: Sure, sounds good. Bye for now.
(Text 9)W: Excuse me. My name is Melanie Smith. I’m doing a questionnaire. Do you mind answering some questions about travelling?
M: OK.
W: Thank you. Have you travelled abroad in the last three months? M: Yes.
W: How often do you normally travel abroad each year? One to three times, four to six times, seven to ten times?
M: I went abroad five times so it’s four to six times.
W: So can I ask you how much you take with you in different currencies? M: Yeah, sure.
W: What about euros? Do you have 1 to 50, 50 to 200, 200 to 500? M: Oh, I have only about 50 euros.
W: And American dollars? M: More than 500 .
W: When you come back from abroad, do you change the currency back into pounds?
M: No, I always keep it.
W: Do you use cards or cash when you travel?
M: Well, I used the cash for taxis, newspapers and snacks. I used the credit cards to pay for hotels and meals.
W: OK, I need to ask you for a few contact details. We don’t ask for an address, just an email and a contact telephone number.
M: Mmm, I’m glad to give you my number, but I don’t want to give out my email, if you don’t mind.
W: That’s fine.
(Text 10)
M: This year, the Summer Festival is the biggest we’ve ever seen, so there should be something for everybody. This is the third year they’ve run it and the timing is slightly different: for the last couple of years it’s been around the fifth to seventeenth, but this year they’ve put it at the end of the month.
The program has theatre dance and a large number of art exhibitions, but the thing the Festival is most famous for its great street music. For today’s report though, I’m looking at some of the theatrical events that you might like to see; in particular, at this year’s theme—circuses.
There are two circus performances. The first is the Circus Romano. As this is a travelling circus, it’ll be performing in a tent, usually put up in a green space. There are no animals—just very talented clowning. It’s really for adult tastes.
The second is Circus Electrica at the Studio Theatre. It’s a showcase for skills in dance and music. An interesting feature of the show is that the performers are so young—the youngest is only fourteen. It’s a good one for the whole family.
Then finally, as it’s summer, there are some performances presented outdoors, like the famous Mekong Water Activity, performing in the City Gardens this week. It’s a must-see for young children.
Well, that’s all I have time for today.
