Kanda really doesn't like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he'd rather drive-even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking is healthy. “I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter,” Kanda said. “But they are not always available.”
So Kanda, who specializes in human-like bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which, he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person's shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, and is 3.5 inches wide and 10 inches long. A microphone, a speaker, and an internal camera allow it to communicate. It's even equipped with a smile.
Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics. A special speech software provided the robot with a voice. Near a group of parked cars, for example, it might say,“In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parked.”
They tested the robot on 15 volunteers, 10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old. “Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion (蒲公英) seeds into the air?” The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded, “Yes, I often did that when I was a child.” Although several participants noted the robot's weight, Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience strange or funny. “I guess people enjoy new technologies,” he said.
Just like a human partner, Kanda's bot isn't perfect. It's not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions, it can't really hold a conversation, about which Kanda is most worried. Despite its limits, Kanda was comforted by the bot's presence. “I felt a kind of sense of being with someone,” he said, “particularly when it spoke.”
24. Why does Kanda have the idea of developing a robotic walking partner?
A. Because he wants someone to accompany him while walking.
B. Because he has never developed a robot like a parrot.
C. Because his family are unwilling to walk with him.
D. Because he is crazy about developing robots.
25. What characteristic does the robot have?
A. It can “speak” and “see”.
B. It can walk like a human being.
C. It can communicate with people freely.
D. It is much more humorous than a real person.
26. What is necessary for the robot to function?
A. A small size.
B. A boxy shape.
C. A human partner.
D. A speech software.
27. What is Kanda most likely to do about his robot next?
A. To make it more convenient to carry.
B. To improve its conversational skills.
C. To enable it to walk in heavy rain.
D. To better its sound system.
C
Fitness junkies(上瘾者)locked out of gyms, commuters(上班族) fearful of public transport, and families going crazy inside their homes during the coronavirus pandemic have created a boom in bicycle sales unseen in decades.
Bicycle sales over the past two months saw their biggest spike in the U.S. since the oil crisis of the 1970s, said Jay Townley, who analyzes cycling industry trends at Human Powered Solutions. “People quite frankly have panicked, and they’re buying bikes like toilet paper,” Townley said, referring to the rush to buy essentials like toilet paper and hand sanitizer(杀菌剂) that stores saw at the beginning of the pandemic.
The trend is mirrored around the globe, as cities like Manila and Rome, set up bike lanes to accommodate growing interest in cycling while public transport remains reduced. In London, authorities plan to go further by banning cars from some central highways.
There are multiple reasons for the pandemic bicycle boom. Around the world, many workers were looking for an alternative to buses and subways. People unable to go to their gyms looked for another way to exercise. And shut-in families tried to find a way to keep kids active during stay-at-home orders.
The pandemic is also driving a boom in electric-assist bikes, called e-bikes, which were a minor part of the overall market until now. Sales at Cowboy, a Belgian e-bike maker, tripled in the January-April period from last year. Notably, they spiked in Britain and France at around the same time in May that those countries started easing lockdown restrictions, said Chief Marketing Officer Benoit Simeray.
Joe Minutolo, co-owner of Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop, said he hopes the sales growth translates into long-term change. “People are having a chance to rethink things,” he said. “Maybe we'll all learn something out of this, and something really good will happen.”
28. What does the underlined word “spike” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Decline. B. Restriction. C. Increase. D. Disappearance.
29. What can be known about Manila and Rome?
A. Bike Lanes are set up for cyclists. B. Locals still rush to buy toilet paper.
C. Cars are banned from some main roads. D.E-bikes sell much better than other categories.
30. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The appearance of e-bikes.
B. The reasons for the bicycle boom.
C. The daily activities of shut-in families.
D. The traffic conditions around the world.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Buy Bicycles Now!
B. The Bicycle Boom after the Coronavirus Pandemic
C. Attitudes towards the Bicycle Boom
D. Introduction the New Development of Bicycles

Perspective is an art technique for creating a false concept of 3D on a 2D surface. Perspective is what makes a painting seem to have form, distance, and look "real." The same rules of perspective apply to all subjects, whether it's a landscape, seascape, still life, interior scene, portrait, or figure painting.
Perspective is possibly the most feared aspect of learning how to paint. The mere word "perspective" makes many a hand tremble. But it's not the basic rules of perspective that are hard, it's the consistent application of the rules to every bit of a painting that's hard. You need to have the patience to check the perspective as the painting progresses, and to take the time to fix it. The good news is that learning perspective is like learning how to mix colors. To begin with, you have to think about it all the time, but with practice, it becomes increasingly instinctive(本能).
Viewpoint is the spot from which you, the artist, is looking at the scene. Perspective is worked out according to this viewpoint. There's no right or wrong choice of viewpoint, it's simply the first decision you make when beginning to plan your composition and figure out the perspective.
Normal viewpoint is how an adult sees the world when standing up. When painting in a realistic style, this is the viewpoint you'll probably use because it's what we're accustomed to seeing. It's what looks most real. A low viewpoint is when you're looking at a scene from much lower than you would stand up. A high viewpoint is when you're looking down on a scene. You might be on a ladder, up a hill, on the balcony of a tall building.
The rules of perspective don't change between a normal, low, or high viewpoint. The same rules apply in all cases. What changes is what you see in a scene. The rules of perspective help us interpret and understand what we're seeing, and enable us to "get it right" in a painting.
32. How do artists use perspective in painting?
A. To give a three-dimensional feeling to a flat image. B. To make paintings look more beautiful.
C. To help viewers form a viewpoint. D. To create space and depth.
33. Why is perspective feared by many beginners?
A. It is acquired only by talent. B. It’s patience- and-time demanding.
C. It is hard and abstract. D. It makes painters’ hands shake.
34. Which position has a low viewpoint?
A. Floating in a hot air balloon. B. Standing on the top of a high cliff.
C. Standing in a valley looking upward. D. Standing on the balcony of a tall building
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. Illustrating relationship between perspective and viewpoint.
B. Emphasizing the importance of perspective.
C. Helping readers understand perspective.
D. Introducing different viewpoints.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As most of us know, talking to and listening to parents don’t always go smoothly. Emotions and past experiences can get in the way. Since communication is a two-way street, some depends on your parents and some of what happens depends on you. 36 So here are some guidelines to consider how to talk to parents:
•Be clear and direct.
Be as clear as you can about what you think, feel, and want. 37 They can listen better or be more helpful if they understand what you mean specifically and what’s really going on.
•Be honest.
If you’re always honest, a parent will be likely to believe what you say. 38 If you sometimes hide the truth or add too much drama, parents will have a harder time believing what you tell them.
•Try not to argue.
Using a friendly and respectful tone makes it more likely that parents will listen and take what you say seriously. 39 If you think your emotions might get the better of you, do something to let off steam and calm down before talking.
• 40
If you have a disagreement, can you see your parents’ side? If you can, say so. Telling your parents that you understand their views and feelings helps them be willing to see yours, too.
A. Communicate as often as possible.
B. Try to understand their point of view.
C. If you lie, they’ll find it hard to trust you.
D. Make careful preparations before talking to your parents.
E. Give details that can help parents understand your situation.
F. The way you talk can influence how well a parent listens to and understands you.
G. Of course, this is hard for any of us when we’re feeling heated about something.

第二节(满分25分)

In a bakery store, some cakes are put in row on a shelf during the Christmas season. Here you may select the one which is most to your taste, and you are even allowed to sample (试吃) them before coming to a decision.
I have often wondered whether some people, who have no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this. One day I asked the shop girl this question, and the answer was yes. “Now there's one old gentleman, for instance,” she told me, “he comes here almost every week and samples each one of the cakes, though he never buys anything, and I suspect he never will. Well, let him come if he wants, and he is welcome to it. And I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if he needs it, and I suppose they can afford it.”
She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped(蹒跚) up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of cakes with great interest.“Hey, that's the very gentleman I've been talking about,”whispered the shop girl, and then turned to him,“Would you like to sample them, sir? Here's a spoon for you to use.” The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the cakes, only breaking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief. “This is quite good.” “This is not bad either, but a little too heavy.” All the time, it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of these cakes, and I was positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old man! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left to him from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite cake.
Among the crowd of happy, prosperous looking Christmas shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place.

读后续写
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
In a burst of mercy, I went up to him and said, “Dear sir, do you have your favorite taste among these cakes?” The old man put down the spoon and looked at me, with obvious embarrassment. “Oh, yes. But, I am sorry, you know, er...” “It doesn't matter, sir. I know maybe you forget your wallet this time. Everyone forgets something sometimes. Do you mind if I pay for this purchase for you?” The man hesitated for a moment, and then nodded. “Which one do you prefer this time, Papa?” He pointed to the one he just tasted. I turned to the girl and asked her to pack it for the old man.
Paragraph 2:
The girl took down the cake from its stand and started to make a parcel of it. During the time, I had a happy Christmas talk with the old man. He lived in the neighborhood for a long time and loved the people here. With the talk I knew that he was a nice man. I was sure that he never wanted to cheat the shop, but maybe he really couldn't afford it at the moment. Many people may meet this situation, and that is what we can do for these needed people.
