Along the coast of Cornwall, the UK, by the white beaches near St. Austell, a superhero stands tall. What is this superhero’s weapon of choice? She has two, actually: in one hand, a large recycling bag, and in the other, a heavy-duty litter picker.
Pat Smith, the 71-year-old eco-warrior(斗士) is also known as “Action Granny”. Pat set herself a task to clear the plastic from 52 beaches in Cornwall and Devon. The former teacher jumped into action after watching a film called A Plastic Ocean, which described the range of plastic pollution damaging the world’s oceans and killing sea life.
“It was really life-changing for me,” says Pat. “Until that point, I hadn’t realized there was a problem with plastic in the ocean. I went home from the theater and was really bothered. We have been consuming so much plastic that we are causing an ocean crisis. I said to myself, ‘I’ve got to do something about it.’”
From January 1 until December 31, 2018, Pat cleaned one beach every week. Even with the year over and her task completed, yet she hasn’t stopped. Pat is also picking up litter – and so are her children in the playground. “My daughter-in-law said last week that she had organized a litter-picking activity in the playground with other children. That just shows you that when people are exposed to what you do, they are very likely to follow in your footsteps.”
Joining Pat today is Marta, a research fellow at the Basque Center for Climate Change, who has travelled from Spain to Cornwall to show support for Pat’s action. She also explained her intention of cooperation to Pat. As an environmentalist herself, Marta knows how important it is to work hand in hand, and she would like to show her sincerity.

    A. Her title as a superhero. B. Her watching A Plastic Ocean.
    C. Her previous job as a teacher. D. Her using too much plastic.
    25. What do we know about Pat’s litter-picking action?
    A. It is influential among her kids. B. It has its own limitations.

    27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. A considerate granny and national superhero B. The cooperation between Pat and Marta
    C. Action Granny’s war on plastic waste D. A granny’s study on climate change

In between all the measures to battle the severe air pollution in Delhi, India, there’s one more choice—a bar that has “pure air”.
Founded by Aryavir Kumar, Oxy Pure, Delhi’s first-ever oxygen bar, offers 15 minutes of 80-90 percent pure oxygen, costing $4.2. Customers are given a lightweight tube for oxygen intake. The device(装置) is placed near the customer’s nostrils(鼻孔) through which they are advised to breathe in the oxygen.
The bar also offers its customers several aromas(气味) to go with oxygen, including lemongrass, cherry and more. According to the aroma people choose, each session promises to improve sleep patterns and digestion, cure headaches, and even claims to work as a treatment for depression.
Bonny Irengbam, a senior sales assistant at the bar, said, “Some people, who try it for the first time, will feel relaxed and fresh. But only people who do this regularly will get real benefits. By saying “regularly”, I mean once or twice a month. We don’t encourage back-to-back sessions, as increased levels of oxygen in the body can make a person dizzy.”
Dr. Rajesh Chawla, a senior doctor at the Apollo Hospital, said, “Even if you breathe in the so-called pure oxygen for two hours in a day, you will go back to breathing the polluted air for the rest of the 22 hours. The concept is purely money-driven.”
Recalling the first few months of the bar, Irengbam admitted that people were skeptical. “Many people criticized, saying we were selling air. Others were simply scared to breathe through the tube.”
Irengbam said the bar saw a significant rise in the number of customers two to three days after Diwali, an Indian festival mainly celebrated by fireworks and lights, as the pollution levels were high.

    A. Once-a-month. B. One-after-another.

    31. What is the purpose of the passage?
    A. To explain how to breathe in the oxygen.

    D. To introduce the first oxygen bar in India.

Art—no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply observe and enjoy it—is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people. However, the particular benefits of art go much further.
Studies suggest that art therapy (疗法) can be very valuable in treating issues such as depression and anxiety disorder. It is a great way to express your emotions without words, process complex feelings and find relief.
You don’t necessarily have to see a therapist in order to experience some of the benefits of art therapy. There are many simple activities you can try from the comfort of your home such as art journaling, drawing, making collections, sculpting with clay, etc. It doesn’t matter what one you choose. The only thing that matters is that you feel comfortable using it. Human beings are naturally creative, and all you need to do to complete an art therapy activity successfully is to be with yourself and your emotions. Once you free your creativity, your inner artist will quickly wake up.
However, working with a licensed therapist also has its advantage because a professional can tailor (专门定制) each activity to your own needs. If the activities are done in a group, they are excellent for building healthy connections with other people, which may be very helpful if you are fighting depression.
Experts agree that art therapy has many benefits, from promoting your self-respect, and providing you a safe outlet to relieve your emotions, to giving you a sense of control over your life and helping you to get to know and understand yourself better. During the process of art creation, you will be taking yourself on a journey of self-discovery that will help you get rid of emotional roadblocks, and learn how to communicate with yourself and others.
    32. What do you have to do to complete an art therapy successfully?
    A. Be talented for art.
    B. See a therapist.
    C. Choose a special media.
    D. Accept yourself.
    33. What advantage do the activities done in a group have in art therapy?
    A. The activities are tailored to one’s own needs.
    B. The activities are inspiring.
    C. The activities are comforting.
    D. The activities promote communication.
    34. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
    A. To explain the advantages of art therapy.
    B. To give some advice about promoting your self-respect.
    C. To provide an approach to relieve your emotions.
    D. To summarize the process of art creation.
    35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A. How to develop drawing skills.
    B. How to wake up art creativity.
    C. Art therapy is a great way to treat mental health.
    D. Art can be used to learn how to communicate with oneself.

Coca-Cola is probably the most famous brand in the world. Although the company is trying to present itself as a health-conscious company, you can’t really say that drinking cola is healthy for you. 36 And we tell ourselves that it’s all okay as long as we don’t overdo it. However, Coca-Cola has other functions besides drinking.
Cola removes the tarnish(暗锈) from old pennies. Got some old rusty (生锈的) pennies? Not to worry! 37 When you get them out, you’ll have shiny pennies that will look as if they were coined a couple of days ago. If you couldn’t clean those pennies with industrial acids, just buy a can of cola and let it do its magic!
You can remove gum from your hair with cola. If you’ve got gum stuck in your hair and don’t know a better way to get it out, don’t worry, you won’t have to cut it. Just pour some cola into a bowl and dip the part of your hair with gum on it inside. 38
39 You probably know about this one. You can make an exploding fountain by putting a mint inside a two-liter bottle. Then move away from the bottle and get ready for a Coca-Cola explosion. 40 Don’t eat a mint and drink cola at the same time, because a similar thing could happen to your stomach.
    A. You can make an exploding fountain.
    B. This is a fun thing to do, but it is also a warning.
    C. Still, we all drink cola, some more and some less.
    D. Coca-Cola is also very cheap and safe for people to drink.
    E. Put them inside a glass of cola and let them rest for a while.
    F. Leave it for a couple of minutes and then simply wipe off the gum.
    G. In some areas you can even access it easier than clean drinkable water.

After the medical treatment , she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica.“How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match . ” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”
After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda.  Following you, I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape (磁带)!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.”With these words, she then rushed out.

    One possible version:
Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda’s tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma, “This is my chance to defeat her.” But on a second thought, she changed her mind, “If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something.” She placed it on the chair carefully, leaving a note saying “Take it easy, we are the best.” Soon, it’s her turn to come on the stage.
Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, “I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.” But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. To her surprise and relief she saw the tape and Mary’s note. With Mary’s kindness and encouragement, Linda finished her performance calmly and skillfully. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won everything.

W: The price of stamps keeps going up and up. I think stamps used to cost penny.
M: Stamps are 42 cents now, but in May they will be 44 cents.
M: Well, I've never lost a letter in the mail so I guess it worths the money.
    Text 4
M: Excuse me. Do you know how I can pay for parking here? This machine doesn’t accept dollars.
W: You can pay with coins or you can use a credit card.
    Text 5
    W: I’m sorry, officer, I wasn’t paying attention.
M: Listen! When you’re speeding, you’re taking your life and very possibly someone else’s life into your hands.
    Text 6
W: Do you want to take a Thai cooking class with me, Allaufu?
    M: Is it expensive?
W: Not really. It only costs 15 dollars each class and you get to eat the food afterwards.
M: That’s about the same price of a meal. Not bad!
W: If you take 10 lessons, you’ll also get a free recipe book and a pan.
    M: Samiap.
W: Do you like Thai food?
M: Not really. But I love to cook and I need a pan anyway.
    Text 7
M: Oh, Mrs. Smith. Can I take the test now?
W: Excuse me?The test ended 10 minutes ago. And you weren’t here to take it. So why weren’t you in class?
M: Oh, my bus didn’t come on time this morning.
W: Are you sure? Your friend Tony made it to class and he said you were still in bed an hour ago.
M: Ah, actually my alarm didn’t go off this morning. Mrs. Smith, please. I really need to pass this class. I’ll lose the scholarship if I do poorly in the class and my parents will be very disappointed in me.
W: I’m really sorry, but I can’t help you with that.
    Text 8
M: So, Marshall, what did you think?
W: Well, between Sarah Tines and Daniel Watson, I think the choice is pretty obvious.
M: So do I. Daniel looks so good on paper. His resume was a little too perfect.
W: He seemed great when I first spoke to him.
M: Yes, but first impression often lies. I guess some people like that sort of style. But it wouldn’t fit in with us. He was much too confident.
W: I couldn’t agree more. Whereas Sarah Tines...
M: She was very convincing and confident, but also modest and I thought her presentation was excellent.
W: Yes, it was. But I’m a little worried about how much experience she has.
M: Yes, that’s true. But she seems ready to take on any challenges we give her.
W: So, who do we give the job to?
    M: Sarah.
    W: I agree entirely.
    Text 9
M: It’s raining so hard. I can hardly see out the front window.
W: Do you need me to drive?
M: I don’t think you can see any better than I can. Plus you aren’t wearing your glasses. Maybe we should pull over and wait the storm to pass.
W: That could be hours and we are supposed to be my grandma’s house by 3 p.m. for Christmas dinner. It’s already 2 o’clock. We also need to pick up a baked turkey at the store and we’re supposed to bring something else too. Do you remember what it is?
    M: Hot chocolate?
    W: No. It’s a food item not a drink.
    M: A salad?
W: No. Oh, a pie for dessert. Ok, I do think we need to pull over now. Can you call mom and tell her we’ll be late?
M: Mom never answers her phone. I’ll call aunt Cathy.
W: Great. Thanks. Tell her we’ll be about 1 hour late.
    Text 10
And for our last news item today, a special report from Diana Hansen on an animal that is rapidly becoming known as man’s best friend—the dolphin. Last week, 28-year-old diver who went swimming in the red sea with a group of dolphins learned a hard way just how caring these creatures can be. When the diver was suddenly attacked by a shark, the dolphins saved him by forming a circle around him and frightening the shark away. It’s not the first time such a rescue has happened and it’s been known for some time the dolphins will do for humans what they do for their own kind. They are, in fact, the only animals in the world whose brains match ours in terms of size and the intelligence. The only creature that concerns dolphin in fact are sharks and man. We don’t necessarily harm them on purpose, but we trap them and fish in that. And we pollute the water they swim in. So without the good deed they do for us, isn’t it the time we start caring about them?
