Jamie Whitmore, 44, isn’t used to slowing down. The professional athlete who became a gold medalist in the Olympics for the disabled has never met a challenge she couldn’t overcome, whether it was a mountain bike race or cancer.
One morning in 2007, Whitmore found her leg muscles were tight when going for a jog. Thinking she’d pushed herself too hard in the last race, she ignored the pain. Later at a sports camp in Arizona , she realized something was wrong. “Once I got on my bike I was so painful that it was hard to lift my legs. I flew back home to go to a hospital.” What doctors found shocked them all: Whitmore had a soft tissue tumour(肿瘤)that started in the bone, and the tumour was wrapped around her nerve of waist, touching several vital organs.
After the surgery, Whitmore had to learn to walk again with the help of a physical doctor. She also started radiation treatment, but four months later, doctors had worse news: A scan showed the cancer was back. “This time it was more aggressive . Doctors took the rest of my nerve in the waist, and removed some tumours from my tail bone.” Whitmore developed sepsis(败血症) from the surgery and endured a two-month recovery. “ My scans were coming back, showing I was clear of cancer, but now I had all of these other complications(并发症)。”
Today, Whitmore is a mother and cancer-free. She has won a gold medal in the Paralympics, and has set two world records. Whitmore has some advice for others with limitations: “Never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. You have to find out yourself . Some doctors told me I would never ride anything more than a stationary bike. And yet I rode my mountain bike 104 miles climbing from 9,000 feet to 14,000 feet. You just cann’t give up.

In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities, because the countryside is much poorer than the city, and often there isn't much work there. Services such as hospital and transport are usually much better in the city than in the countryside. They hope that their lives will improve when they move to the city.
But in the big cities of Europe like London or Paris, people are moving out of the city. These rich families want to live a quieter life. They are tired of the noise and the dirt of the city, and they are tired of the crowded streets, crowded trains and buses. They don't want to live in the cities any more. They want a house with a garden in the countryside, and breathe the fresh air there.
So they move out of the cities. Some don't go very far, just a little way out of the city, to the towns near the cities, other people move to the real countryside with sheep, cows and green fields. There, they start new lives and try to make new friends.
Not all those who move from the city to the countryside are happy. After two or three years, many people who have done this feel that it was a big mistake. They don't make so much money and there isn't much work to do. People in the countryside are very different and aren't always very friendly.
As a result, quite a lot of people who have moved to the countryside move back to the city. "It's wonderful to see crowds in the streets and cinema lights," they say.
8. Which is NOT the reason for people moving to the cities in China?
A.The countryside is much poorer than me city.
B.People in the countryside have nothing to eat.
C.People in the countryside don't have much work to do there.
D.Services in cities are usually much better than those in the countryside.
9. Why do some rich families in Europe move to the countryside?
A.Because they will find good jobs.
B.Because they are tired of living in the city.
C.Because they can make more money there.
D.Because they like feeding sheep and cows in the green fields.
10. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph shows __________

D.they are tired of the noise and the crowded streets in the city

A. They can’t make much money
B. There isn’t much work for them to do in the countryside

Telling fewer lies benefits people physically and mentally. Anita Kelly, study author and professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame, employed 110 adults for her study. She divided them into two groups and asked one group to stop lying for 10 weeks. Lies included big ones and tiny ones—any false statements—but participants were still allowed to leave out the truth, keep secrets and avoid questions they didn't want to answer, etc. The other group wasn't given any special instructions about lying.
It turns out that both groups reduced their lying, but those who were specifically told to tell the truth improved their health more. “We found that the participants could purposefully and dramatically reduce their everyday lies, and that in turn was associated with significantly improved health,” said Kelly.
When participants in the nolie group told three fewer white lies than they did in other weeks, they experienced, on average, fewer mentalhealth complaints and physical complaints. They were less likely to feel tense or sad and also experienced fewer sore throats and headaches. They also reported that personal relationships improved. Additionally, participants found themselves honest about their daily accomplishments, and they stopped making up excuses for being late or failing to complete a task, for example.
“It's certainly a worthy goal to have people be more honest and interact with others in a more honest way,” says psychologist Robert Feldman. “That would be beneficial, I'm a little doubtful whether it makes us all healthier, but it may make us healthier in a psychological way.”
13.Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.People who tell lies are healthier than those who don't.
B.Being honest can help cure sore throats and headaches.
C.Not all the participants were required to tell the truth.
D.Participants involved are asked not to keep secrets.
14.From Robert Feldman, we can learn that ________.
A.white lies might make people have more complaints
B.honesty is likely to help people become mentally healthier
C.people should not be honest with others but with themselves
D.telling the truth can make people physically and mentally healthy
15.The text is mainly about ________.
A.the connection of honesty and health
B.research on physical and mental health
C.advice about being an honest person
D.effects of honesty on personal relationships

How to Prevent New Coronavirus(冠状病毒)?
New coronavirus is a member of the coronavirus family that cause conditions like the common cold, SARS and other respiratory(呼吸的) conditions. While new coronavirus can be serious, taking preventative measures can help you protect your health at home.
Wash your hands with soap and water to minimize your infection(感染) risk. 16. Wet your hands with warm water, then apply a mild soap. Work the soap for 20-30 seconds, and then wash your hands clean under warm running water.
Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. You may come into contact(接触) with the new coronavirus on a surface, like a door handle or countertop. When this happens, the bacteria can stay on your hands, so you can easily infect yourself if you touch your face with dirty hands. 17.
Stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing. 18. Additionally, coughing and sneezing both release the virus into the air, so they may increase your risk of infection. Keep your distance from people who appear to have symptoms of an upper respiratory infection.
Disinfect high-touch surfaces daily by using a product that kills viruses. Unfortunately, new coronavirus can stay on surfaces, such as door handles and countertops. 19. Make sure the surface stays wet for about 10 minutes so it effectively kills the virus. This limits the risk of the virus staying on the surfaces and potentially causing an infection.
20. Information about new coronavirus has spread on social media, sometimes causing unnecessary fear. It’s helpful to fact-check your information before making any decisions.
A.Try not to worry too much if you’re not truly at risk.
B.Don’t run the risk of handling an animal that might be ill.
C.Use a spray disinfectant or wet wipes to clean the surfaces daily.
D.Call your doctor if you suspect that you are hit by new coronavirus.
E.Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth in case the virus is on your skin.
F.The best way to prevent new coronavirus is to wash your hands as often as possible.
G.Since new coronavirus is a respiratory infection, coughing and sneezing are common symptoms.

Here I am in the middle of a city, 350 miles far away from our farmhouse. Do you want to know why we move last week? Dad lost his job, and as mom explained, he was lucky to find other one. His new job meant I had to say goodbye to my classmate, my school or just everything else in the world. To make matters bad, now I have to share a room with my younger sister, Maggie. Tomorrow is first day of school. I am awfully tiring, but I know I’ll never fall sleep. Good night and remember, you, my dear diary, is my only souvenir from my past life and my only friend.
