    Governments, financial institutions, employers, border security and police services are increasingly using facial recognition technology. This allows them to quickly confirm a individual’s identity. Systems are becoming so competent that a wanted criminal can be picked out of a crowd of thousands of people. All that’s required is an image in a database to compare with the image of any number of people in a crowd.
    Ordinary people, too, are using facial recognition to unlock their phones, computers and other devices. Such systems are generally quite secure. They also are instantaneous (瞬间的) and relieve people of the need to memorize passwords or PINs (Personal Identification Numbers).
    Despite these advantages, human rights groups in the U.S. have protested against the growing use of facial recognition technology for two main reasons. The first is that current facial recognition systems frequently make mistakes with certain groups of people. A study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology examined three systems and found that they wrongly identified up to 34 percent of women who had dark skin. Another government study on facial recognition systems found that their error rates were higher for black women and Asians as well as for African men and women. The systems were much more reliable when they were used to identify white men, suggesting that their facial recognition technology had mainly been trained using white faces.
    The second reason is that these systems could be used in ways that would harm human rights. If the systems improved enough to become one hundred percent reliable, police departments might use them to identify people taking part in legal protests and demonstrations. Gathering and storing such information about citizens could violate their privacy rights.
    In response to such concerns, the U.S. city of Portland has forbidden the use of facial recognition by government agencies as well as by stores, restaurants and hotels in the city.

    Dear Benjamin,
    I just read an article about the effects of climate change on coffee production. The article raises a number of concerns that will affect our own company in the future. I’m attaching a portion of the article. Please click on it below and read it.
    The article mentions Ethiopia in particular and explains an important climate-related disadvantage that it has. This disadvantage may prevent that county from being a reliable source of coffee in the future. Currently, most of the coffee that our company distributes in Asia is imported from Ethiopia. Thus, I believe that our company should reduce its dependence on Ethiopian coffee and begin distributing coffee imported from other countries instead. One country that we should consider is Columbia. It does not suffer to the same degree from the disadvantage that Ethiopia faces.
    I think that we should also ask our old friend Katherine Chen for advice about this. She has been a leader in our industry for more than 30 years and knows more about it than anyone else.

    Climate change is creating environmental stress, which spreads parasites, pests and plant disease. All of these have increased the fragility of the coffee crop and created the possibility of a species-destroying rot.
    Almost all the coffee cultivated in the world today is one of two species, Arabica or robusta, either of which might be wiped out in this way. There are other species of coffee, and scientists are hoping that, if worse comes to worst, a different species can be bred into coffee.
    Unfortunately, almost all of these species exist only in Ethiopia, a country that climate change is already hammering. As the environmental nonprofit USAID points out:

    The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City (《我在故宫修文物》) does not just focus on the stories of the past.
    Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary people—the restores (修复者) of relics and antiquities (古董).
    The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
    “If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
    A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (工艺) in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance (忍耐), loneliness… All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”
    But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
    One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”
    Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
