Last Saturday morning, Jasmine Harrison became the youngest woman to row(划船)alone across an ocean. It took the 21-year-old swimming teacher just over 70 days to row across the Atlantic Ocean.
Ms. Harrison, who's from North Yorkshire, England, didn't have loads of experience in rowing long distances. She'd only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge(TWAC). "I just thought, I want to do this, so I'm going to do it." she said.
Every year, rowers taking part in the Atlantic Campaign set off from the Canary Islands in December and row roughly 4, 828 kilometers across the Atlantic. Every day, Ms. Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 250-kilogram boat across the ocean. On average, she rowed about 20, 000 strokes a day.
Ms. Harrison had a satellite phone that allowed her to talk with family and friends every day. But the journey still left her with much time all by herself, which she says she enjoyed. But things got harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her favorite songs.
Along the way she saw lots of sea life, including several mild whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. For several days, she was followed by a small group of dolphins. "I'm in their environment." she said. "It's just amazing." But there was danger, too. Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. "Everything happened when I was asleep," she said.
Somehow, Ms. Harrison kept going. On February 20.after 70 days.3 hours and 48 minutes, she reached the island of Antigua-the end of the journey. Her trip didn't just set a record, it also raised over£18, 500 for two charities: Blue Marine Foundation, which works to control overfishing, and ShelterBox, which helps people who have suffered from natural disasters.
    24. What made Ms. Harrison decide to join in the Atlantic Campaign?
    A. Her watching TWAC. B. Her participation in the 2017 event.
    C. Her family's encouragement. D. Her desire to make achievements.
    25. What challenge did Ms. Harrison meet according to the text?
    A. Dangerous sea animals. B. Loss of her phone.
    C. Hunger and tiredness. D. Strong waves.
    26. How far did Ms. Harrison cover every day on average?
    A. About 59 kilometers. B. About 69 kilometers.
    C. About 79 kilometers. D. About 89 kilometers.
    27. What can we know about Ms. Harrison?
    A. She is experienced in rowing. B. She is a well-known swimmer.
    C. She set a record in the campaign. D. She has got many rewards so far.
    C
What acts of kindness will make us the happiest, and who tends to benefit the most? A newly-published review of decades of kindness research provides some answers.
In this paper, researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose measured well-being in various ways, including both mental and physical health. Some were experiments, where people did a kindness practice to observe its effects, while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were.
As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Lead researcher Bryant Hui was astounded that the relationship wasn't stronger than it was, but he was still encouraged by the results.
One thing Hui and his colleagues found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness, like bringing a meal to a sad friend, tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness, like volunteering in a soup kitchen.
The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to be higher in "eudaimonic happiness"(a sense of meaning and purpose in life) more than "hedonic happiness"(a sense of pleasure and comfort). Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind takes effort, which reduces comfort but could make people feel better about themselves and their abilities, which would provide a sense of meaning.
Being kind came with greater eudaimonic happiness for women than for men, too. According to Hui, this could be because, in many cultures, women are expected to be kinder than men; so, they may have more to gain from it. And younger participants experienced more happiness when they were kind than older participants, perhaps for developmental reasons, he says.
Hui isn't sure why acting kind might have these different effects on different groups, but he points to theories put forth by researcher Elizabeth Midlarsky: Being kind may make us feel better about ourselves as a person or about the meaning of our lives, help us forget our own troubles and stresses, or help us be more socially-connected with others.
    28. What does the data in the second paragraph intend to show?
    A. The recent paper is worthy of being read. B. The recent paper gives convincing results.
    C. Kindness is always a hot topic of research. D. Kindness is closely linked to one's well-being.
    29. What does the underlined word "astounded" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Afraid. B. Certain. C. Excited. D. Surprised.
    30. Which of the following acts of kindness can make one feel happier according to paragraph 4?
    A. Volunteering in a hospital. B. Cleaning a community.
    C. Returning a lost item to its owner. D. Collecting donations for the poor.
    31. What do the researchers find from the paper?
    A. Being kind has different effects on different groups.
    B. Eudaimonic happiness makes people feel comfort.
    C. The younger experienced more happiness than the older.
    D. Female participants are kinder than male ones.

When archaeologist(考古学家)Zahi Hawass and his team set out to excavate an area near the Egyptian city of Luxor in September 2020, all they were hoping to find was King Tutankhamun's mortuary temple. Instead, the archaeologists came across the largest ancient city ever found in Egypt. Hawass, who exposed the discovery on April 8, 2021, believes the extremely large, well-preserved city is the "So'oud Atun", or the "Rise of Aten".
"The discovery of this lost city is the second most important archaeological discovery since the tomb of Tutankhamun," Betsy Bryan, an Egyptology professor at Johns Hopkins University and member of the team, said in the statement.
The city dates back 3, 400 years to the times of Amenhotep III, one of Egypt's most powerful pharaohs(法老), who ruled Egypt from 1391 to 1353 BC. The ninth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty ruled during a time of peace, allowing him to accumulate large amounts of wealth. While archeologists suspected the pharaoh had used some of his riches to build what Hawass refers to as "the golden city", they'd never been able to find it.
The researchers believe that his son, King Akhenaten, briefly lived in So'oud Atun before founding the city of Amarna about 250 miles away. Historians think the pharaoh and his followers left to escape the priests(祭司)who were unhappy about his decision to give up all other deities(神抵)in favor of the sun god Aten. Following Akhenaten's death, his son, Tutankhamun, moved to Thebes, which also served as Ancient Egypt's capital. The scientists aren't sure if So'oud Atun was ever occupied again.
So far Hawass and his team have unearthed thousands of amazing artifacts(手工艺品). Among them are rings, amulets, and pottery vessels. They also found a well-preserved bakery, cooking, and food preparation area, complete with ovens and storage vessels. Due to its size, the researchers believe it may have been a commercial operation. Hawass, who says the team has only explored about a third of the lost city so far, believes there're a lot more surprises to be found.
    32. What word can best describe the discovery of the ancient city?
    A. Accidental. B. Profitable. C. Intentional. D. Difficult.
    33. What contributed to the formation of the "golden city" according to the text?
    A. The ancient pharaohs' desire for wealth.
    B. The demand for an ancient Egypt's capital.
    C. No wars during the period of Amenhotep III.
    D. The religious belief in gods in the ancient times.
    34. What can we infer about the ancient city from the text?
    A. It should be more than 3, 500 years old. B. It is a sign of ancient architectural art.
    C. It used to be the largest city in the world. D. It has not been explored before.
    35. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A well-preserved temple. B. An archaeological discovery.
    C. A great Egyptian archaeologist. D. A new research on an ancient city.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As you get older, you'll meet a wider range of people from different cultures. Culture is an idea that isn't easy to understand. People often use the term to refer to things like food, holidays, clothing and music. 36 Religion, customs, beliefs and values are also part of your culture. So when meeting people from different backgrounds, you can sometimes find that there're huge differences in how you see the world.
37 For example, when you meet people from a different culture, ask them about their lives. It is one of the best ways to understand the culture. But be polite about it and remember they don't owe you an answer, and might not want to give it-not everyone wants to explain everything about their culture.
Maybe you've recently met someone from a different culture you find interesting. 38 Get to know his/her families and see how their customs and traditions differ from yours. You might be surprised to find how culturally different two people living even in the same town can be!
Read books by and about people who are different from you. Reading memoirs(回忆录), biographies and other nonfiction books is an obvious way to learn about a country or someone's life. 39 Like with books, you can also watch movies to learn more about a culture. What's more, keeping yourself in a different culture through travel is also an amazing way to understand another culture.
40 So accept and respect the differences between yourself and your friends from different cultures-remember that what is a difference to you is just their normal life!
    A. Make friends with him/her.
    B. But it also goes much deeper than that.
    C. Show respect towards people from other cultures.
    D. You may think you know a lot about a culture or place.
    E. Differences between us are what makes life so interesting.
    F. There are many ways to understand other people's cultures.
    G. Also don't ignore novels that have been translated from other languages.

The toughest task I had was from Ireland. I was asked do a model of part of a large house that had been burnt down years before. Since then, I had done all sorts of buildings.
