Hong Kong’s Four Best Siu Mei Restaurants
Want an authentic taste of Hong Kong? Then siu mei (烧味) must be the best choice. It’s a general term for those roasted meats hanging in a restaurant’s front window. If this tasty cuisine has already attracted you, read on to see the 4 top siu mei restaurants in Hong Kong.
    Chop Chop
This modern-style siu mei restaurant delivers traditional cuisine in a fun contemporary setting. Headed by chef Dai Lung, whose careful cooking inspired the char siu(叉烧) dish -- “sorrowful rice” that featured importantly in comedian Stephen Chow’s 1996 film The God of Cookery,Chop Chop’s signature dish is the roasted pork belly char siu rice.
    One Goose
This creative, newly opened restaurant has set out to reform(改革) the traditional siu mei. One Goose’s black pepper-seasoned roast goose is a perfect combination of East and West. Coupling the appetizing siu mei with the restaurant’s classically excellent decorations, you’ll definitely enjoy this one-of-a-kind dining experience.
    Yue Kee Restaurant
Since its establishment in 1958, Yue Kee has been run as a family business. Today, the second generation of ownership insists on creating its roast goose in the most traditional way possible. What’s more, it differs from others with the bird sourced from its eight privately owned farms in China.
    Luen Fat Restaurant
As simple and plain as it gets, Luen Fat is a time-honored spot. The restaurant has a large number of loyal customers who come in groups for the shop’s delicious honey char siu and tantalizing roast pork ribs, always resulting in a long queue outside the restaurant. Its simplistic layout and furnishings represent the traditional siu mei restaurant.

Every year, the brightest young scientists from around the globe come together to participate in the world's largest pre-college science competition, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).They demonstrate their knowledge of science and engineering to improve the way we work and live .
One of 2019’s winners, Katie Lu, found a method for removing oil from water. This concept can also be applied to the removal of microplastics from our oceans as well.
Here is what Katie told reporters:
My experience at Intel ISEF was amazing! I remember on judging day, walking the exhibit hall and looking at the people gathered outside waiting to get in. My teacher turned to me and said, "That's the future right there." It was so amazing to spend time with all of these participants who are going to do amazing things in the future.
My scientific career has taught me not to fear failure and not to be afraid to ask for help. It 's really easy to be overwhelmed (挫败) and wonder if what you’re doing is going to work out, but even if it doesn’t, it’s OK! Always look on the positive side! A failure now doesn’t mean you’re a failure forever. Failure makes success feel earned when it comes. Also, asking for help is good when you’re struggling. You learn how to do things a lot faster and more efficiently.
I'm shocked that some people are still skeptical about climate change. It is real, it is dangerous and it is one of the most important issues of our generation. Reducing carbon emissions isn't a "should", it is a "must" to continue living on the planet. Additionally, people aren't really worried about their personal impact on the earth in terms of littering, overusing plastic or wasting resources. If we don’t curb harmful human activity before it's too late, it will be a problem that affects all humans, not just those that contribute.
    24. What seems to concern Katie most?
    A. Ocean exploration. B. The overpopulation on the earth.
    C. Environmental problems. D. The shortage of natural energy.
    25. What can we learn from what Katie's teacher said?
    A. No Intel ISEF, no future.
    B. All the talents are at the Intel ISEF.
    C. The participants will make the future amazing
    D. Katie should try to do better than the other participants.
    26. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
    A. The setbacks Katie experienced in her science.
    B. The relationship between failure and success.
    C. Seeking help is a shortcut to doing things well.
    D. What Katie has gained from her scientific career.
    27. What does the underlined word “curb” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
    A. Punish. B. Control C. Doubt D. Measure.

    C
Sugar cane(甘蔗)contains around 10% sugar. But that means it contains around 90% non-sugar—the material known as bagasse (甘蔗渣)which remains once the sugar-bearing juice is squeezed out. World production of cane sugar was 185 million tons in 2017 , which results in a lot of bagasse.
At the moment, most of it is burned. But Zhu Hongli, a mechanical engineer at Northeastern University, in Boston, thinks it can be put into better use. As she and her colleagues describe, in Matter this week, with a bit of improving bagasse makes an excellent and biodegradable (可生物降解的)replacement for the plastic used for disposable(一次性的) food containers such as coffee cups.
Dr. Zhu is not the first person to have this idea. But previous attempts tended not to survive contact with liquids. She knew from previous research that the main reason why past efforts fell to pieces when wet is that bagasse is composed of short fibres which are unable to hold the finished product. She therefore sought to insert a suitably long-fibred substance(物质).
Bamboo seemed to be the best choice. It grows quickly, degrades (降解)readily and has appropriately long fibres. And it worked. When the researchers blended(融合) bamboo remaining into bagasse, they found that the result had a strong crossing of short and long fibres.
To put their new material through its paces, Dr. Zhu and her colleagues first poured hot oil onto it and found that, rather than passing through the material, as it would have with previous bagasse products, the oil was resisted (抵制) by their invention.
They also found that when they made a cup out of the stuff and filled it with water heated almost to boiling point, the cup remained unbroken for more than two hours. Though this is not as long as a plastic cup would last, it is long enough for all practical purposes.
    28. What do we know about bagasse?
    A. It is widely used. B. It is usually wasted.
    C. It can not be degraded. D. It takes up 10% of sugar cane.

    29. Why do the previous attempts fail?
    A. The cups are not disposable. B. The fibres of bagasse are short.
    C. The plastic can not be replaced. D. The material is not biodegradable.
    30. What is special about Zhu's invention?
    A. It can let oil pass through. B. It can be boiled in the water.
    C. It can hold liquid and resist heat. D. It can reduce the use of bamboo.
    31. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. New Bamboo Containers B. A New Application of Fibres
    C. Young and Promising Materials D. A Perfect Mix of Cane and Bamboo

    D
One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think that we'd make better decisions if only we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision- making. It's true that there is plenty of research showing that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.
Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationship (for example, they fear to be abandoned) tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger is present.
In the real world though, it's worth realizing that feeling anxious once in a while is extremely common. It communicates to others that you care, and what's more, it's probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: if you're a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future and imagine possible plots, including bad ones.
The important thing, if you are a worrywart(杞人忧天者),is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don't bury your head in the sand. Instead, act on your fears——do the research as well as preparation, so rather than walking blindly into that which you fear, you meet the challenge in full readiness.
When anxiety beats you, or casts a shadow over your life, this is a serious problem. No one is denying that. But like everyday anxiety of this kind that you feel before a presentation or interview, you needn't see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution. As for people who are fairly anxious by nature, there is reason for cheer, too. Your nerves(神经紧张)are a sign of your watchfulness. Listen to them and act on them. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage.
    32. What can we infer from the first paragraph about anxiety?
    A. It can enable us to be more focused.
    B. It can stop us from thinking logically.
    C. It can make us more willing to take risks.
    D. It can be the only reason for all bad decisions.
    33. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Anxious people are less sensitive to danger.
    B. Anxious people have difficulty discovering liars.
    C. Feeling anxious is more likely to put people at risk.
    D. Feeling anxious occasionally is a sign of intelligence.
    34. How should we deal with anxiety in the author's opinion?
    A. Regard it as our enemy. B. Take action to control it.
    C. Avoid being defeated by it. D. Treat it as a minor feeling.
    35. What is the theme of the passage?
    A. Effective ways to prevent anxiety. B. Unexpected benefits of anxiety.
    C. Tips on how to keep a good mood. D. Common misunderstandings about anxiety.
    第二节(共5 小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Over the last few years, there’s been a trend to focus on gratitude. We can buy different kinds of gratitude journals, or download apps that remind us to write down our blessings. 36 "But it's also important to remember that gratitude is free.” says Laurie Santos, who teaches a course on the science of well-being and happiness at Yale University.
Noting down gratitude seems to pay off. Studies have found that giving thanks can help people sleep better, lower stress and improve interpersonal relationships. Keeping a gratitude journal can decrease materialism and promote generosity among adolescents. 37 “It's one of the practices that really wins out from the field of positive psychology.” she says. Her students, in addition to keeping gratitude journals, are asked to write a thank-you letter and then read it out loud to the recipient (收信人).“They show measurable improvements in well-being even a month after they've done this." she says.
38 One study found that counting blessings once a week improved happiness, but doing so three times a week didn't. There's also a lack of research on how gratitude exercises help people with clinical depression or anxiety. Indeed, for all the research on the broad benefits of expressing gratitude, it isn't for everyone. 39 It can’t make injustice, loss or pain disappear .
During really tough times, like when she suffers from poor health, Santos feels like she is reaching for reasons to be grateful. But she still tries to find some. "I'm grateful for the sun that's shining or being able to wake up," she says. 40
    A. And it isn't a cure-all.
    B. So it doesn't feel pleasant.
    C. Those products remind us to take time to be grateful.
    D. What works for some people may not work for others.
    E. Gratitude allows her to remember what is going well.
    F. Practicing too much gratitude certainly have undesired effects.
    G. That’s why gratitude features heavily in Santos’ happiness class.

More importantly, we got a hands-on learning experience where we were allowed to practice making porcelain. Travelling eastward, we came to Wu Yuan County which presented a beautiful countryside scene to us. Here we not only enjoyed natural beauty and the folk architecture style and local traditional culture, but also learned the revolutionary spirits with which people fought for freedom and liberation.
