Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none -- that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas -- the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed -- All he needs is a stick, a garden rake and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance drawing, was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.
Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand -- he is also an excellent chef and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.
    14. It can be learned from the text that _________.
    A. Denevan walks a lot to complete his work
    B. it is not hard for Denevan to find suitable sand to draw on
    C. it usually takes long for the storm to destroy Denevan’s work
    D. Denevan is very particular about his drawing instruments
    15. What does Denevan enjoy about his work according to the text?
    A. Walking a long distance.
    B. Waiting for the storm to come.
    C. Looking for a suitable canvas.
    D. Watching his work being destroyed by nature.
    16. Which of the following can best describe Denevan?
    A. Generous. B. Open-minded. C. Imaginative. D. Traditional.
    17. Denevan is also popular as a chef because _________.
    A. He founded an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”
    B. He likes to treat diners to delicious food at its source
    C. He always holds events in different farms
    D. He was ever the topic of a documentary

    C
If you have ever felt sick at the back of a bus or after a boat cruise, then you might have experienced motion sickness. The condition’s most common symptoms are dizziness, headaches, sweating and vomiting.
Humans haven’t always experienced this reaction. According to Fred Mast, a professor at the University of Bern, motion sickness began to affect us when we created vehicles for getting to places faster. “Our bodies were not prepared for it,” he says, explaining that human-made acceleration creates a disturbance between our vestibular system (前庭系统), which is responsible for controlling balance, and our vision. While travelling on a boat or in a car, you may not be watching the movement of the vehicle, but your vestibular system registers it. Since the human brain has not evolved enough yet to resolve that conflict, it leads to motion sickness. Motion sickness can also strike when there is simulated acceleration, such as in some video games or movie scenes in the theatre that make the viewer’s brain think it’s moving when it’s not.
While one in three people experiences motion sickness at some time, certain people are more easily affected. These include: children and young adults (according to a German survey, half of those under the age of 30 report being affected); patients; and women.
Sufferers can avoid motion sickness by making changes to how they travel. For instance, sitting facing forward at the front of a bus allows you to see the movement. Sitting in the middle of a boat or next to the wing of an airplane will reduce the amount of movement you feel. Staying away from alcohol and heavy meals ahead of car, boat or plane trips can also be helpful.
    18. What does the underlined word “simulated” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. fake B. sudden C. frequent D. visible
    19. What is the second paragraph mainly?
    A. The symptoms of motion sickness.
    B. The cause of motion sickness.
    C. The function of vestibular system.
    D. The evolution of humans’ brains.
    20. Who is more likely to suffer motion sickness?
    A. The old. B. The young. C. The male. D. The hungry.
    21. What can be done to avoid motion sickness while travelling?
    A. Closing eyes to feel the movement.
    B. Sitting close to the bus driver.
    C. Filling the stomach before a boat trip.
    D. Choosing a middle seat in the airplane.

    D
Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein’s jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bags.
Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts (收银台) . The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume.
Among the bag makers’ argument: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today.
The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.
Environmentalists don’t dispute (质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.
    22. What has Steven Stein been hired to do?
    A. Help increase grocery sales.
    B. Recycle the waste material.
    C. Stop things falling off trucks.
    D. Argue for the use of plastic bags.
    23. What does the word “headwinds” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Bans on plastic bags.
    B. Effects of city development.
    C. Headaches caused by garbage.
    D. Plastic bags hung in trees.
    24. What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers?
    A. They are quite expensive.
    B. Replacing them can be difficult.
    C. They are less strong than plastic bags.
    D. Producing them requires more energy.
    25. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Plastic, Paper or Neither
    B. Industry, Pollution and Environment
    C. Recycle or Throw Away
    D. Garbage Collection and Waste Control

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, and then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend. Everyone except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package on my desk. I ripped open the wrapping paper and just stared down at my desk. There sat a box of perfumed powder (香粉). The girls sitting near me giggled and went off about the “old lady” gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened. I felt my face turned red as I shoved (胡乱丢) it into my desk.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the same girls who had seen me open the powder started talking trash about my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying. “What could my fiend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and filed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normally like me to say mean things like that about someone.

Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth, tears streaming down her face. “Actually, I’m your secret friend; I’m terribly sorry about the gift,” she whispered to me, sobbing with her face hidden in her hands. Frustrated and somewhat grieved, she explained that she couldn’t afford a fancy present and her mother had given her the powder, the only luxury in her family. Then, she ran out of the bathroom with some girls staring at her. Regretful and kind of embarrassed, I was sick to my stomach as my mean words ran through my mind. With the water running through my fingers, I felt my throat was tightened as if a rock were stuck in it because I ruined everything she specially prepared for me. After a while, I plucked up my courage and ran out for her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I was trying to be cool and fit in to the group. I added that having known how precious the powder was to her family, I was really grateful for receiving the gift from her. Relieved and delighted, she flashed a smile to me, looking me in the eyes and comforted me that she understood my difficult situations because she had been trying to fit in, too. “We share something in common, don’t we?” she said, with a broad smile spreading over her face. Her simple words, spoken from her heart, found their way straight into mine. Touched immensely, I felt warmth flowing through me. That day, I gained a real “secret friend” and also learned to cherish real friendship.
