  Glacier National Park

Some of the best cliff dwelling, including Cliff Palace, Balcony House and Long House, require the purchase of tickets.   I was overloaded with work ----- final exams, students’ grades, parents’ meetings, paperwork...I felt frazzled and I really needed a break. I stood up, wanting to relax my brain. From the window, I found my former student Kelly White to my office.

  Kelly had taken my public speaking class. He was an outing student and he was admired by many students as he was really good at playing football and his athletic skills had earned him a scholarship. However, he never put much effort into my class. So he failed the final public speaking exam. That meant Kelly had no chance to go to college on time.

  So Kelly wished me to change his grade. I rejected his requirement though it made him angry. If I changed Kelly’s grade, why shouldn’t I change every other student’s failing grade? Why should be treated differently because he was blessed with athletic skills?

  Now Kelly came back to me. He said,“because of sports, in the past, I often got away with punishment. No one taught me to be responsible for my actions, except you. It was you that made me later realize that I had to be responsible for my actions. You did the right thing. And by the way, I know you think I learned nothing about public speaking in your class, but I really did. I need to come back to thank you.”

  Hearing Kelly’s words, I was touched and learned that as a teacher I could have quite positive influence on some students and play a very big role in their life in the long run.

 When I was a little girl, by chance I heard Whitney Houston’s song, I Will Always Love You, which made a great, deep impression on me though I didn’t understand what I heard. I wanted to learn how to sing the song but in vain because I couldn’t speak English. So I tried to remember the tune in order not to forget the song.

  Five years later, I bought a cassette that included I Will Always Love You. I was absolutely thrilled that I found the song I had been looking for. Later I started to listen to local radio which broadcast English songs, and sometimes it told lyrics of the songs. That helped a lot. As time went by, I started to understand a few words and then 50% of songs I heard on the radio. Of course I was a middle school student at that time, so I knew some English grammar.   After leaving high school, I decided to study English literature at university. And that was what happened ----- I studied English literature at university and graduated recently. I chose this major because I really loved learning English. Now I speak like an American native.
