Chemicals are part of our daily life. All living and nonliving matter is made up of chemicals and virtually every man - made product includes the use of chemicals. Many chemicals can, when properly used, significantly contribute to the improvement of our quality of life, health and well-being. But other chemicals are highly hazardous and can negatively affect our health and environment when improperly managed.
Chemical safety is becoming an increasingly important topic around the world. I covers the handling and use of chemicals in a way that is safe for humans and the environment. It includes risk assessment and education in best and safe practices. It brings attention to potential danger and discusses safety in industrial, teaching and academic settings.
Chemical safety has many scientific and technical components. Among these are toxicology(毒物学),ecotoxicology and the process of chemical risk assessment which requires a detailed knowledge of exposure and of biological effects.
The International Programme on Chemical Safety(IPCS) works to set up the scientific basis for the sound management of chemicals, and to strengthen national abilities for chemical safety.
Chemical Safety is achieved by undertaking all activities related to chemicals. It covers all chemicals, and the full range of exposure situations from the natural presence of chemicals in the environment to their extraction (提炼), industrial production, transport, use and handling.
The Chemical Safety programme helps to address proper use, handling, and storage of these materials. These activities are extremely vital to a safe working environment.
The production and use of chemicals continue to grow worldwide, particularly in developing countries. This is likely to result in greater negative effects on health if sound chemicals management is not ensured. Eye conditions are quite common. Those who live long enough will experience at least one eye condition during their lifetime.
Globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision condition that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. Reduced or absent eyesight, if not received timely attention and care, can have major and long-lasting effects on all aspects of life, including daily personal activities, interacting( 互动) with the community, school and work opportunities, the ability to access public services and general health status.
Reduced eyesight can be caused by a number of factors, including systemic diseases, age-related degeneration(退化), and infectious diseases. The majority of people with vision conditions are over the age of 50 years; however, vision loss can affect people of all ages. Blindness and vision damage more severely impact on the life of people in low-and-middle income settings where accessibility to most basic services and specific government-supported aids may be lacking.
Most eye conditions can be targeted effectively with preventive strategies. For example, preventative lifestyle changes among children, including a combination of increased time spent outdoors and decreased near-work activities, can delay the arrival and slow the progression of eyesight degeneration, which reduces the risk of high nearsightedness and its complications(并发症).
The treatment of eye conditions targets curing as well as addressing symptoms and progression. Surgery can remove cataracts(白内障) and visual correction can get rid of the majority of visual errors. Treatment for other eye conditions require longer-term follow -up to control the progression of the condition.
Treatment is also required and available for the majority of eye conditions that do not typically cause vision damage, such as dry eye, conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Treatment of these conditions is often directed at relieving the symptoms. Worthy of mention is that certain eye conditions that do not typically cause vision damage, may do so, if left untreated.
( )32. What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A. People don’t live long enough.
B. People don’t pay enough attention to eye conditions.
C. Most people have a near or distance vision condition.
D. People with eye conditions won’ t be able to work any longer.
( )33. Why does vision loss affect people from poor background more severely? .
A. Because they have some other diseases.
B. Because most of them are more than 50 years old.
C. Because they work too hard to care about their eye conditions.
D. Because they can hardly get basic services and aids from the government.
( )34. How can children reduce the risk of high nearsightedness?
A. By changing lifestyle. B. By joining in activities.
C. By taking on more near work. D. By spending more time outdoors.
( )35. What does the treatment aim at if eye conditions don ‘t typically cause vision damage?
A. Finding out the damage. B. Reducing the symptoms.
C. Removing the visual errors. D. Controlling the progression.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
If you struggle with reading, then watching TV can certainly seem a lot easier. 36 But what benefits are you missing out on by not reading? And what specifically are the benefits of reading compared to watching television or movies? Here are reasons why you should read more books.
Reading improves your concentration.
Unlike blog posts and news articles, sitting down with a book takes long periods of focus and concentration, which at first is hard to do. Being fully engaged in a book includes closing off the outside world and burying yourself into the text. 37
Readers enjoy the arts and improve the world.
A study done by the NEA explains that people who read for pleasure are many times more likely (than those who don ‘t) to visit museums and attend concerts. 38 And they are almost three times as likely to perform volunteer and charity work.
Reading improves your imagination.
39 The worlds described in books, as well as other people’s views and opinions, will help you expand your understanding of what is possible. By reading a written description of an event or a place, your mind is responsible for creating that image in your head, instead of having the image placed in front of you when you watch television.
40
Books offer an outstanding wealth of learning and at a much cheaper price than taking a course. Reading gives you a chance to consume huge amounts of research in a relatively short amount of time. Heavy readers tend to display greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people were, which, in turn, leads to a quick mind.
A. Reading makes you smarter.
B. You are only limited by what you can imagine.
C. Over time, it will strengthen your concentration.
D. Subjects only need to read silently to reduce stress.
E. It certainly requires little effort from us but to relax.
F. Reading is not only fun, but it has all the added benefits.
G. Readers are active participants in the world around them.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tawny Nelson is a single mother of 4 daughters, who, you can imagine, was having a tough time financially after her ex(前夫) left her and the girls. Even though she devoted herself to raising her four children, feeding four children and herself on a waitress’s wages turned out to be hard. Sometimes they didn’t have enough food to eat. They had to wear thin clothes in winter. She didn’t always go to doctors when she was sick. The truck she was driving had a few issues- -a bad engine, a bad battery, a tire with a slow leak, and other problems.
One day Tawny and her children went to a grocery store for some bargains, but unfortunately were trapped in the grocery store parking lot, in a rainstorm, and in a truck that wouldn’t start because the battery had died. Tawny no longer had a cell phone and didn’t have any family in the area she could call.
She lifted the hood (引擎盖) on the truck and started asking people if they could give her truck a jump. It was a pretty simple request. Many people have jump started more vehicles than they can count.
But Tawny asked more than twenty people in the course of two hours for a jump. They all ignored her. Not even a no. Just acted like she didn’t exist.
She was so sad.“What is wrong with people?" she wondered, “Why wouldn’t someone help this poor young mother and her children?" Having 4 daughters herself, she couldn’t imagine them needing help and no one taking a few minutes out of their busy day to help them.
Her 5 year old was melting down, her newborn screaming, her two year old crying she was hungry, and her oldest desperately trying to help.
Tawny was completely desperate and threw herself into the truck seat, feeling like the worst Mom ever.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150字左右。
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then an older gentleman knocked on the truck window.
The next morning the gentleman returned to her house with the fixed car.

M: But I’ll miss the news. It ‘s important in my business to keep up with events in China.
W:I know, I know. Why not get your earphone? You can listen to the news and get healthy at the same time.
M: That’s a good idea!
Text 10
Talking about the events of my life that have influenced me, I thought of the night of August 1, 2006. I found myself in Radio City Music Hall in New York City sitting by my mother. We had flown there the day before for’“An Evening with Harry, Carrie and Garp”, a charity event with readings by three authors. The excitement kept me awake, I was standing and applauding a tiny woman as she prepared to read.
The Harry Potter series accompanied my childhood. I was so attracted by the Harry Potter world. These books opened my eyes to the whole world. They kept my brain working over the summers. More importantly, they taught me that there is always another way to look at problems that may result in new, different, faster and easier solutions.
Mrs. Rowling beautifully created the stories which, like all great books, created a connection across mind, body, and soul. Although some people believe the series teach magic powers, many think that these books offer wonderful messages beyond words.
Nowadays, with so much attention on physical aspects of life, it would be easy to become depressed. But I am not worried I have been surrounded by 6,000 people, all of whom paid good money, not for a sporting event, but to hear authors read their works. I have evidence that words on a page can change not only my life, but the world.

写作第二节
Then an older gentleman knocked on the truck window. She opened the door. He handed her a plate of chicken and biscuits, as well as bottles of water. “Feed those babies and yourself, young lady. I called a garage and my wife will be here shortly to take you all home."”Thank God for the unnamed old man who came to her rescue. Tawny and her . children were taken home and her truck was sent to the garage for repair.
The next morning the gentleman returned to her house with the fixed car. When she asked what she owed him, he smiled telling her,“The only payment I want is for you to never give up and keep being an amazing mom." The elderly gentleman then left and did not return. His words brought tears to her eyes. She had never cried so hard in her life. What he did restored her faith when she was falling apart. But she couldn’t even thank him. She hoped one day she could do what he did for her for someone else.

(4)评分时,应注意的主要内容为:内容要点、应用词汇和语法结构的丰富性和准确性及上下文的连贯性。
