    Strange Museums You Never Know

Some museums hold stranger collections than others. Here's our list of the extremely unusual ones.

    The Museum of Bad Art

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to the curators at the Museum of Bad Art, none of these pieces are beautiful. They're either bad pieces made by otherwise talented artists, or bad pieces made by untalented artists. The collection includes portraits, landscapes, and still life pieces.

    International Banana Museum

You can find practically every object shaped like a banana at this museum in Mecca, California. Some examples: staplers, statues, record players, and salt and pepper shakers. Even better, you can also eat practically any banana-flavored treat here, like banana ice cream, banana soda, and, of course, banana splits.

    Busy Beaver Button Museum

Learn about the history of buttons. Appreciate a collection of political, humorous, and just plain entertaining buttons. You can even make your own button at this hidden Chicago museum. And you can get a reward if you complete some 18th century puzzles.

    National Museum of Roller Skating

This museum in Lincoln. Nebraska, has the largest collection of historical roller skates, in the world. Some skates are almost 200 years old! There are also skating costumes, thousands of photos of skaters and programs from national and international roller skating competitions.

International UFO Museum and Research Center

Do aliens (外星人) exist? If so, what is their preferred mode of transportation? The IUFOMRC in Roswell, New Mexico, is dedicated to answering these questions and researching UFO activity. It includes exhibits on crop circles, Area 51 and other alien-related events. It even keeps an official record of UFO sightings across the country.

I love charity(慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you wont find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.

The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charitys appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations(捐赠物). They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find childrens books, all 10 or 20 pence each.

Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they dont encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.

The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million a year, funding(资助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.

    24. The author loves the charity shop mainly because of       .

    A. its convenient location      B. its great variety of goods

    C. its spirit of goodwill        D. its nice shopping environment

    25. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to       .

    A. sell cheap products     B. deal with unwanted things

    C. raise money for patients    D. help a foreign country

    26. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops?

    A. The operating costs are very low.  B. The staff are usually well paid.

    C. 90% of the donations are second-hand. D. They are open twenty-four hours a day.

    27. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?

    A. What to Buy at Charity Shops.

    B. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development.

    C. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate.

    D. The Publics Concern about Charity Shops.

    C

A calorie deficit (赤字) is a state in which you burn more calories than you consume. As one of the most popular approaches to losing weight, how does it work? For example, if you burn 2,500 calories per day but only eat 2,000, you have created a deficit of 500 calories per day. There is mathematical certainty. But, this by no means tells the whole story about how calories deficit affects our lives.

Before wondering what a calorie deficit is, its probably best to learn what a calorie is. A calorie is a unit that we use to track our bodys energy expenditure (消耗) and storage. In order to just stay alive, human beings (and animals) burn calories. This means, even before we perform any activity, our bodies are already using energy (measured in calories) to keep us alive. Around 70% of the calories we consume are spent on just keeping our vital organs running. Thus, if a person consumes calories far less than needed to look thinit may have negative effects on the body.

When people pick up a calorie deficit, they often merely note that the calorie math is irrefutable (无可辩驳的). The question here is that not all calories are the same. If you eat a few bags of potato chip worth of calories to support the calorie intake needed to maintain or cut down on your weight, it will work. But, this doesnt have the same effect on your body and overall health as a balanced nutritional meal containing the same amount of calories.

It seems like a simple unit of energy has become an object of our societys obsession. It needn't be that way. Remember, calorie deficits are just a tool, which serves a purpose in losing some weight and keeping track of your calorie intake seems simple enough.

    28. What do we know about the calorie deficit?

    A. It helps people lose weight.      B. It is a way of doing exercises.

    C. It affects people's lives positively.  D. It means the calories people consume.

    29. Which of the following statements can be learned in Paragraph 2?

    A. A calorie is a unit to store daily energy.

    B. People need to burn calories to be alive.

    C. Calorie intake is merely to keep our organs operating.

    D. Living animals only burn calories after activities.

    30. What is suggested for people to lose weight healthily?

    A. Focusing on the calorie math when eating.

    B. Focusing on different calories when eating.

    C. Having bags of potato chips containing enough calories.

    D. Having balanced nutritional diets containing proper calories.

    31. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Influences of calorie deficits.    B. Approaches to lose weight.

    C. Distinctions between calories.    D. Ways to track calorie intake.

    D

We already know that salt can lead to heart disease. But could it also affect our mind? Scientists found that a high-salt diet caused cognitive impairments in mice» and it could produce the same effect on humans.

Costantino Iadecola, director of the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research the Institute, said they fed the mice eight to sixteen times their normal salt intake and then tested the mice. After about three months, the mice had a big change in their behavior. Mice are very curious, and they like to look for new things. However, the tested mice lost the ability to identify a normal object. When the mice were put in their cage and asked to find a quiet spot, they did not remember where the quiet spot was. Then when the mice were building a nest, which is something the mice do daily, they, were unable to do so. The research suggested humans would experience a similar response.

Studies have shown Australians eat around double the recommended amount of salt each day, most of it coming from processed food. Dr. Ladecola said the estimated two teaspoons of salt the average Australian eats each day could affect the brain function in the long term. However, the decline might not be as obvious as in the mice, who were given extremely high levels of salt. "But probably over years and perhaps decadesas opposed to a few months for the mouseeven lower levels of salt may have a terrible effect," Dr ladecola said.

High levels of salt cause serious immune changes in the organs in and around the stomach, resulting in an almost autoimmune effect on the brain. It is part of a growing body of evidence that we really are what we eat,Bryce Vissel, director of the Centre for Neuroscience at the University of Technology Sydney, said. "Those changes in turn cause all sorts of responses in the body, which over time certainly contribute to cognitive impairments."

    32. Which can describe the tested mice?

A.They remained quiet all day.     B.They became smarter than ever.

C.They forgot some routine things.  D.They were quick at finding objects.

    33. What do we know about Australians?

    A.They ignore health advice.        B.They have a higher-salt diet.

C.They dislike processed food.      D.They value their brain health.

    34. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?

A.Studies carried out by Bryce Vissel.

B.Immune changes brought about by salt.

C.Effects of daily diets on human behaviors.

D.Links between salt intake and brain damage.

    35. What does the text suggest?

A.Brain health counts much.    B.The body never tells a lie.

C.Low-salt diet is to be advocated.      D.Heart diseases can be prevented.
