It was designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and American designer Joshua Ramus. Tours began in 2006, two years after its opening. The library hosts "Dinner in the library", which invites readers for cocktails, and also a special speech from distinguished(卓越的)authors.

In the past hundred years, a million people have died in earthquakes, another million have been killed by hurricanes and tornadoes, and 9 million have lost their lives in floods. In addition to this, many millions have died as a result of hunger and disease. We should also not forget in many of the world's countries, drought—serious water shortage—is a fact of life, especially in the African Sahel area bordering the Sahara Desert.
Scientists and engineers around the world have made great advances in earthquake engineering. It is, of course, physically impossible to move cities such as Tokyo and San Francisco that have been built on earthquake belts. But most often it is not the earthquake that kills people. It is the falling buildings, bridges and so on that cause deaths, and such a happening can be greatly reduced by better building programs.
Finally, perhaps we need to consider the natural disasters that we are causing ourselves. Through our mismanagement of the planet's resources we have sped up the dying out of hundreds of sorts of plants and animals, at the same time possibly destroying our own long-term surroundings for life. Maybe this is one disaster that could be prevented if we are willing to act with a sense of responsibility.
    24. How many people have been killed in natural disasters in the past 100 years?
    A. 1 million. B. 9 million.
    C. More than 11 million. D. More than 1 million.

    C. cities built on earthquake belts can be moved in time
    D. losses and deaths caused by earthquakes can be reduced with human efforts
    27. What does the underlined "one disaster" in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Earthquakes. B. The text doesn't tell us.
    C. All of the disasters mentioned. D. Man's mismanagement of natural resources.
    C
Sleep is a basic human need, as basic as the need for oxygen. Getting a good night’s sleep is not only directly related to how we feel the next day, but to our long-term health as well. However, many of us suffer from insomnia (失眠). Even more of us report at least one night of restless sleep per week. This is a serious problem.
Well, how can we make sure that we rest well and stay healthy? Here are some suggestions.
If you can’t sleep in the middle of the night, don’t get up. The bright light will affect your body clock and worsen your insomnia. Stay in bed!
Avoid short sleep during the day, except for a brief ten to fifteen-minute sleep between 2:00 and 4:00 P.M.
Limit your time in bed to the average number of hours you’ve actually slept per night last week. Don’t try to make up for lost sleep. It can’t be done.
Get regular exercise each day, but finish at least six hours before bedtime. Exercising in the evening can help keep you awake.
Take a hot bath for thirty minutes within two hours of bedtime. The bath will warm you, relax you, and make you feel sleepy.
Keep our bedroom dark, quiet, and well ventilated (通风).
Keep a regular schedule seven days a week. Avoid sleeping late on weekends. Although it may feel good while you’re doing it, sleeping late on weekend can lead to insomnia during the week.
Don’t drink alcohol (酒精). Although, having a drink before bed makes you sleep, alcohol loses its effects after a while. The secondary effects of alcohol can wake you up during the second half of your night’s sleep.
Keep the face of the clock in your bedroom turned away, and don’t find out what time it is when you awaken in the night.
    28. The first paragraph serves as a(n) __________.
    A. argument B. introduction
    C. comment D. explanation
    29. Which of the following is NOT advised for a good night’s sleep?
    A. Staying in bed after failing to sleep.
    B. Don’t exercise six hours before sleeping
    C. Don’t drink alcohol before sleeping.
    D. Preventing the wind from blowing into your room.
    30. To sleep well, you need to __________.
    A. get up late on weekends

    D. have a bath in the morning

A dam is a man-made structure built across a river. Most dams are built to control a river’s water flow, improve navigation and control flooding. However, some dams are built to produce hydro-electric power.
Hydro-electric power is produced as water passes through a dam, and into a river below. The more water that passes through a dam, the more energy that is produced. Once a dam is built, a man-made lake is created behind the dam.
Electricity is produced by a kind of equipment called a turbine(涡轮机).Turbines contain metal coils(线圈)surrounded by magnets(磁铁). When the magnets move round rapidly over the metal coils, electricity is produced. Turbines are located inside dams. The falling water makes the magnets go around the coils.
Dams provide clean energy, but they can also harm the environment. Species that use rivers to reproduce are often hurt by dams. In the northwest of the US, the population of fishes has dropped from 16 million to 2.5 million since hydro-electric plants were built on the Columbia River. Dams all over the world have hurt some species.
The highest dam in the United States is located near Oroville, California. The Oroville Dam towers 230 meters and is more than a mile wide. This dam was built in 1968, 22 years after the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam, on the Nevada-Arizona border controls the Colorado River. It is 221 meters high and has 2.6 million hectare-meter(公顷)of water.
The highest dam in the world is the Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan, a country in central Asia. This dam is 300 meters tall.
    32. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of a dam according to the passage?
    A. To control a river’s water flow.
    B. To produce hydro—electric power.
    C. To improve navigation and to control flooding.
    D. To reduce the population of some species of animals.
    33. The third paragraph mainly tells us________.
    A. what a turbine is and how it works
    B. how hydro-electric power is produced
    C. how the magnets and the metal coils work
    D. how the falling water passes through a turbine
    34. Which is the highest dam in the US?

    A. 1 million. B. 9 million.

    B. sleep during the day sometimes
    C. avoid looking at your clock
    D. have a bath in the morning

    C. some effects of bad night’s sleep

    A. The Nurek Dam. B. The Oroville Dam.
    C. The Vakhsh Dam. D. The Hoover Dam.

These days air pollution is becoming more and more serious in our city. Every day we have to take in very dirty air, which does great harm to our health. To reduce the pollution, we should take action immediately.
Firstly, we should call on people to take a bus or ride a bicycle instead of driving a car. We should try to use cleaner fuels when driving. Secondly, some factories which send out heavy smoke should be closed or moved out of the city. What's more, we need to plant more trees and grass to make the air fresher. Only in this way can we enjoy a better air quality.
I hope you can take my suggestions into consideration.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
