As a child, Jane Goodall had a natural love for the outdoors and animals. And at age 23, she
left for Nairobi, Kenya. There, Jane met famed Dr. Louis Leakey, who offered her a job at the
local natural history museum. She worked there for a time before Leakey decided to send her to
the Gombe Stream Game Reserve in Tanzania to study wild chimpanzees. He felt her strong
interest in animals and nature, and her knowledge as well as high energy made her a great
    candidate to study the chimpanzees.
In December 1958, Jane returned home to England and Leakey began to make arrangements
for the expedition (考察) , securing the appropriate permissions from the government and raising
funds. In May 1960, Jane learned that Leakey had gained funding from the Wilkie Brothers
    Foundation.
Jane arrived by boat at the Gombe Stream Game Reserve on the eastern shore of Lake
Tanganyika with her mother. The early weeks at Gombe were challenging. Jane developed a fever
that delayed the start of her work. Finally, an old chimpanzee named David Greybeard began to
allow Jane to watch him. As a high-ranking male of the chimpanzee community, his acceptance
meant other group members also allowed Jane to observe. It was the first time that Jane had
witnessed David Greybeard using tools. Excited, she telegraphed Dr. Leakey about her
observation. He wrote back, “Now we must redefine ‘tool’ and ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as
    humans.”
Jane continued to work in the field and, with Leakey’s help, began her doctoral program
without an undergraduate degree in 1962. At the University of Cambridge, she found herself at
odds with senior scientists over the methods she used — how she had named the chimpanzees
rather than using the more common numbering system, and for suggesting that the chimps have
emotions and personalities. She further upset those in power at the university when she wrote her
first book, My Friends, the Wild Chimpanzees, aimed at the general public rather than an academic
audience. The book was wildly popular, and her academic peers were very angry and shocked.
Dr.Jane Goodall earned her Ph. D. on February 9,1966, and continued to work at Gombe for the
    next twenty years.
    24. Why did Leakey appoint Jane to Tanzania?
    A. Jane was asked to change her workplace.
    B. Jane was not suitable for her previous job.
    C. Jane’s abilities and talents were discovered.
    D. The natural history museum was out of business.
    25. What does the underlined phrase “at odds” mean in Paragraph 4?
    A. Agree. B. Disagree. C. Resemble. D. Associate.
    26. It can be inferred that the academic peers thought Jane’s first book was .
    A. short of academic value B. a common achievement
    C. worth farther discussion D. a new direction of knowledge
    27. What can we learn from Jane Goodall?
    A. Challenging senior scientists is a must in gaining fame.
    B. The ability to raise funds counts for achieving great success.
    C. Cooperation is the only key to making significant discoveries.
    D. Passion and hard work can make a difference in scientific research.

The first set of Chinese stories presented in English scripts (剧本) , titled Stories of China:
Performed in English, was officially published by Foreign Languages Press. Planned by the New
Channel International Education Group with the participation of playwrights from China, the
United Kingdom and the United States, the book provides a new way for young people to learn
English while inheriting (继承) and spreading Chinese culture.
The book contains 20 English scripts in novel formats covering a wide range of subjects.
Unlike the most common English scripts for young readers on the market which are based on
adaptations of European and American stories, those scripts presented in this book are unique for
being based on classic Chinese stories, re-adapted and written in English. The book is divided into
three grades in terms of grammar and vocabulary difficulty, making it suitable for young English
learners from primary schools to junior and high schools.
All the scripts in the book are written by top playwrights with elegant, pure and vivid
language. The scripts are provided with a summary of the story in both Chinese and English, so
that readers can fully understand the plot as well as the history and culture behind it. Readers can
not only improve their English skills through immersive (沉浸式的) reading and performance but
    also appreciate Chinese culture.
Hu Min, English education expert and founder of the New Channel, said the combination of
traditional Chinese culture and English teaching has become a trend, guiding young people to tell
Chinese stories to the world with their own wisdom and deep Chinese cultural heritage. The New
Channel will offer special courses on Stories of China:Performed in English in its many schools
across the country, and cooperate with primary and secondary schools in Beijing, Shanghai to
offer English drama courses on a trial basis. Hu believes the courses will set off a new wave of
    enthusiastic learning among young people.
    28. Why was Stories of China:Performed in English published?
    A. To offer English drama courses on a trial basis.
    B. To make foreign students enjoy Chinese culture.
    C. To advertise some of the top playwrights in China.

    D
It’s time for bed, the lights are out, and yet you’re wide awake. You do eventually manage to
fall asleep, but even then, it’s a very shallow, restless sort of sleep.
Now more research suggests you needn’t look at the moon for the cause of this sleeplessness.
However, in a surprising twist, the findings aren’t entirely what the researchers expected. While
we know that humans are a species ruled by light, the “lunar phase effect” (月相效应) affects
sleep even when artificial sources of light are accounted for.
Rather than staying up later and sleeping less during the full moon, it was just before the full
moon that people had a shorter and lighter sleep. “It turns out that the nights before the full moon
are the ones that have most of the moonlight during the first half of the night,” said Horacio
Iglesia, a professor of biology at the University of Washington in The Guardian. The opposite was
true just before the new moon — people tended to sleep more and go to bed earlier.
Ninety-eight participants across three indigenous communities in Argentina wore wrist
monitors tracking sleep patterns over the course of one to two months. While one community had
no access to electricity, the second community had limited access, and the third community was
located in an urban setting with full access to electricity.
The study also found that this lunar phase effect on sleep also appeared to have greater
impact on people who had more limited access to electricity. In every community, participants’
peak (高峰时期的) sleepless period occurred in the three to five days leading up to the full moon
night, while the opposite was true for the new moon, the study authors found.
Wanting further insight, the researchers compared their data to the results of a similar study
of 464 Seattle-based students at the University of Washington. The findings proved consistent.
This research supports the view that try as we may, we can’t ever fully get away from some
    forces of nature.
    32. What makes it hard for people to fall asleep according to the passage?
    A. Faded light. B. Visual distance.
    C. Artificial light D. Bright moonlight.
    33. When do people usually have a light sleep?
    A. Before the full moon. B. During the full moon.
    C. Before the new moon. D. During the new moon.
    34. What did the research in Argentina show?
    A. The third community slept least during the new moon.
    B. The lunar phase effect affected the first community more.
    C. The peak sleepless period often happened at the same night.
    D. The result of the research differed from previous ones.
    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Shallow Sleep Does Harm to Health B. The Moon Affects Our Sleep Cycles
    C. People Live in Harmony with Nature D. Sleep Patterns Differ from Each Other

    第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
    选项。
Tips on Living in the Present
We’ve all been asked this question: where do you see yourself in five or ten years? 36
While thinking ahead is important, it often causes unnecessary stress. Thus, living in the moment
is the right choice and the tips below will help you.
37 If not, it will only ruin all the good things happening now. If you focus on the
future too much, it will make the present irrelevant. What will be, will be and stressing about
something isn’t going to change that.
Be spontaneous (自发的) . What if you are saving for a house, but your friend invites you to
a last-minute group tour? 38 Group holidays with all your friends don’t come around often
and as you get older and people start their families, they are less likely to happen. Good memories
    will always be precious.
In order to fully live in the present, surround yourself with people that make you feel good.
39 So, if you find yourself doubting your achievements and think you perform worse than
other people, take a step away from them for a while until you no longer feel negative about the
differences in your lives and achievements.
Put yourself first and stop trying to please anyone else. You are your own number one, and
looking after yourself before anyone else is the most important. Work towards the goals you want
to achieve, not the ones others want you to achieve. If you don’t want to get married, that’s OK,
and if you do, that’s OK too. 40
    A. Go for it!
    B. Anyway, others’ opinions don’t matter at all!
    C. Fully appreciate the moments of today.
    D. Just make sure anything you do is done for you!
    E. Stop worrying about what hasn’t happened yet.
    F. But actually most of us don’t have the answers to that.
    G. It’s easy to get caught up in others’ lives and compare the achievements.

    第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的
    最佳选项。
After realizing that my wife and I were using electronic devices around our toddler (刚学步
的小孩) too much, we decided to try removing them from his life entirely. When we’re with him,
we put our 41 away and if we need to use one, we move to another room. Considering how
simple this is, it’s revealing how 42 I’ve found it.
I realized I was talking about this 43 as if it were my son’s, when obviously it’s my own.
Our son doesn’t 44 them at all, whereas we feel strangely naked (赤裸裸的)without phones.
Having our phone in our hand has become second 45 .
Every day I 46 through the same two or three apps, clicking on notifications as if my
well-being 47 on it. I click on Twitter less than three seconds after I last 48 it. I find myself
looking up 49 information – the difference between frogs and toads(蟾蜍), the lyrics to a song I
will never remember... I spend too much time 50 things on the internet and not enough time
looking up from it. But at the very least, I can 51 doing this when my 52 is around.
All parents have had the 53 of looking away for five seconds only to look back and
discover their child moments away from 54 . It was a common part of 55 even before phones
were invented, but the 56 is whether I’ve been creating more 57 for such moments to occur.
And the answer is yes. There is simply no bit of trivia (琐事) online that is worth 58 my child’s
    safety.
And the 59 is I’ve been missing out on the world in front of me, even if it’s just for a
minute or two at a time. I fear my son thinking I’m more 60 in the screen than I am in him. So,
from here on out, I’m looking up.
