My father Earl was to take two-lane highways all the way from Chicago to New York.“This way,” he explained,“we’ll actually see where we’re going.I hate turnpikes(收费高速公路),Virgil.” There were other reasons for taking highways:no fee to pay, cheaper gas stations, and a chance to shop for food.
He had me laughing from the moment we left town.I’d never seen him in better spirits. He did imitations, told stories and made remarks to the waitresses in the restaurants we’d stopped in every three hours, highly praising their cooking skills.
Earl asked me to keep an eye out for hitchhikers(搭便车的人),so we might have someone to share the driving. My father had, however, tough standards of selecting hitchhikers. We passed teenagers, soldiers and old men,and each time Earl had a different excuse for not stopping.
Finally,my heart was filled with uncontrollable anger.“Why don’t you ever stop? It’s not fair to look at people and then not stop.”
Earl looked at my face.“I don’t know,Virgil,” he said.“I think the reason is that I don’t want anyone in the car.We never have any time alone and I like it with just the two of us.”
Hearing what he said,I felt tears welling up in my eyes. How wonderful, yet disturbing and unprepared I was to hear it.
We pulled in for the night some twelve hours after leaving Chicago and checked into a nameless motel. It was in this motel that my father and I spent one of the best nights of our lives. He watched TV with me for a while and he begged a pack of cards from the motel manager and did card tricks for me—a skill I had no idea he possessed. Then my father and I played a card game and we were so comforted by the game that we took the pack with us when we drove out for a late night snack of ham and eggs.
The sky was filled with stars. After turning off all the lights,we whispered to each other in bed, like boys who fear they might be overheard.I don’t remember what I said, but I was sure he was listening.

“We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds... Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves.I’m convinced that humans need to leave the earth.” These are the words of the famous scientist Stephen Hawking, spoken at a science festival in Norway in 2017,a year before his death.
Hawking was not alone in this view. Many experts feel that the only way for humanity to last far into the future is to colonise(移民于)other planets. That way,if a terrible disease, nuclear war or some other disasters strike the earth, civilisation as we know it would still have a chance.Mars is one of the most attractive destinations.NASA,the United Arab Emirates, the private company SpaceX,and the organisation Mars One all have plans to send humans there.“Either we spread the earth to other planets,or we risk going extinct,” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said at a conference in 2013.
But not everyone agrees that colonising Mars or any other planet is such a great plan. The most common argument against going is that it’s just too expensive or dangerous. It will take huge amounts of money and other resources just to get people there, let alone set up a place for them to live. It’s not even clear if humans could survive on Mars. One of the biggest dangers is its deadly radiation that ruins the planet.
Maybe all the time and money people would pour into a Mars mission would be better spent on more urgent projects here on Earth, like dealing with poverty or climate change. Some experts argue that handling a problem like an asteroid(小行星) strike or disease outbreak while staying here on Earth would be much easier and less expensive than surviving on a new planet.
In addition, moving to a new planet could harm or destroy anything that already lives there.Mars seems uninhabited, but micro-organisms could exist on Mars.Human visitors may destroy this life or permanently change or damage the Martian environment. Some feel that’s too much of a risk to take.
28.Why did the author mention NASA,the United Arab Emirates,SpaceX and Mars One?
A.To stress the risk of dying out on Earth.
B.To provide evidence for Hawking’s theory.
C.To show growing intention of moving to Mars.
D.To explain the advanced technology in astronomy.

29.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It is costly and risky to colonise Mars.

D.All the time and money should be spent on Earth.

    A.Not steady to keep.
    B.Not fit to live on.

    答案B
    解析词义猜测题。根据最后一段中“Mars seems uninhabited,but micro-organisms could exist on Mars.”可知,but后表明火星可以提供给微生物生存之地,那么but前说明火星可能无法提供生存的地方,也就是火星可能是不适合生存或居住的,故选B项。
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A.Mars,Our Future Planet
    B.Moving to a New Planet
    C.Should We Colonise Mars?
    D.Stay Home or Outer Space?
    答案C

    D
Few people would name their favourite color as gray or cream, yet our homes are often filled with these neutral tones. When I studied color and its effect on joy,I wondered:Why is there such a gap between the colors that make us feel energetic, and the colors that surround us?
“Chromophobia” was the immediate answer I received when I posed this question to Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat, architects of Saguaro Hotel in California.“People are afraid of color. It’s the fear of making a choice,of making a mistake and having to live with it.”
I could relate.I used to be such a person,so afraid of color that the spectrum of my entire apartment fell between white and cream. Then one day I moved into another apartment—everything was to my taste except that the walls were a buttery yellow which gave me an urge to repaint them. But something funny happened. Each day I’d come home to that apartment,it felt like the sun was shining, even in the dead of winter. In ever again thought about repainting after the first week.
If you’d like a more energised space, experts agree the best first step is to start with white walls, bringing color into the space through furniture and decorative objects. This approach of using tiny bursts of bright color can be an appealing strategy for people who are afraid of color and it’s surprisingly effective.
It takes a little practice to become confident with color, especially when it comes to putting different ones together. But here’s a clever shortcut for finding joyful combinations.Once, when Stamberg and Aferiat were stuck on choosing a color for a house they were designing, they turned to painter David Hockney who suggested,“Look at Matisse.” Not only did the brilliant paintings of Henri Matisse inspire them to choose the right blue, but they also began to use this approach with clients. When people see striking colors coexisting kindly on a canvas,it gives them confidence that they will also work in their homes.
    【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。文中作者结合自己对颜色的恐惧引出,人们可以通过家具和装饰物将色彩带入空间,从而营造更有活力的空间,明亮的颜色也可以使人们生活得更加快乐。
32.What does the underlined word “Chromophobia” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A mental state of fearing color.
B.A social phenomenon of rejecting changes.
C.An attitude to pursuing a simple lifestyle.
D.An awareness of making the right choice.

We live in a society that constantly produces and consumes electronic products. It is often cheaper to buy new pieces of equipment than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies persuade consumers to replace their old TVs,mobile phones and computers for the latest models.E-waste is created when we throw away electronic equipment like this.In the EU alone, about 8.7 million tonnes of e-waste is produced each year. 37
    The problem with e-waste
Burying e-waste in landfills or burning it causes serious problems for the environment. 38 These substances can then leak into the ground in landfills or pollute the air when they are burnt.
    Global recycling schemes(计划)
39 However, their schemes are not always managed properly and sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health.Setting up recycling programs in the countries that create e-waste could solve this problem.E-cycling centres could recycle the parts that we can reuse and properly dispose of the rest.
    Take-back policy
Another solution to e-waste is to make manufacturers responsible for their used products. This could mean forcing them to take back old products which are no longer wanted. 40
    Consuming less
We can all reduce the amount of waste we produce by buying electrical products only when we have to.

A.Sadly, just over one million tonnes is recycled.
B.Electronics contain dangerous chemicals and metals.
C.In recent years, many countries have started recycling e-waste.
D.They should then make sure they are properly recycled or reused.
E.This report will examine this problem and provide some possible solutions.
F.By resisting the temptation to buy a product just to have the latest version,we cut down on e-waste.
G.Both manufacturers and consumers must accept their responsibilities and make efforts to keep it to a minimum.

My dad’s life seemed typical of his generation. He graduated from high school during the Depression and worked for a large company. He enlisted(入伍) in 1941,served in the Pacific and Europe.
On returning,he met my mother, married and had three children.Because of the job,he needed to continue his education. With his full-time job and attending to his family,he attended college in the evening and obtained his degree.
As kids,we knew what Dad told us.During cold winters he sympathized with unfortunate kids in just a T-shirt and shorts. He was saddened by children with nothing under the Christmas tree.He loved kids and schools and he wanted to spread kindness to everyone in need of help,so he was always ready to give a hand to people he met.
With us three kids on our own,Dad and Mom retired and came to Florida. Two years later Mom died,in 1980.From that time,Dad got into the habit of walking around his house. He also tried golf but failed to become addicted to it.Although it was hard time for Dad,he didn’t give up the hope of life.He decided to do something meaningful to society.
Then he saw an ad requesting literacy(读写能力) volunteers.Dad helped some children who were homeless learn to read and write. He also helped an old man learn to read because his literate wife was going blind. He told us he even wanted to be a teacher to help more people.
As time passed,Dad had some health problems. His legs became weak and he started to have trouble in sleeping. My brother,my younger sister and I came to look after him, telling him to stop doing the volunteer work and have a rest at home. However,he was so stubborn that he disagreed with us and insisted on his decision.
    注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Before long,Dad made his dream come true.

    参考范文
Before long,Dad made his dream come true.As it happened,a teacher who lived near Dad’s home resigned. The school needed someone to help teach students.Dad realized it was time for him to take action. He began working as a teacher’s assistant in a third-grade class, helping children with spelling and grading papers. He spent a lot of time with the students, playing games and singing songs with them.As a result, all the students like getting along with him and he was well popular in the school.
One year later, something surprising happened.Dad’s physical condition turned better. He explained to me that the students kept him healthy. He said every time he stayed with the children,he moved and smiled a lot, which made him feel energetic and happy.Seeing Dad was satisfied with life,I learned a lesson:Our value shouldn’t be limited by the face and age,but it should depend on what we can do for others.
