    第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Whether you’re travelling to the islands or the mountains of Thailand, you’re likely to spend at least one night in its capital city on the way. Bangkok might be noisy and polluted but it’s also an exciting city with plenty of things to see and do. Why not make it a longer stay?
    Where to stay
The Khao San Road was a famous traveller spot even before Leonardo di Caprio’s character in the film The Beach stayed there. But it’s noisy, not very pretty and not very Thai. For something more authentic, Phra Kanong offers an alternative place to stay, with its fantastic street markets where every day Bangkok people eat, work and live. It’s not as convenient for the main tourist sites, but it has a Skytrain station so you can be at the Grand Palace in 20 minutes.
    How to get around
Bangkok’s traffic can be a nightmare. Sure, you can easily take a taxi --- if you want to spend hours stuck in traffic jams---but there are two much better ways to get around the city. To explore the temples and historical sites, catch an express boat river taxi or a long tail boat along the Chao Phraya river and the canals. For the modern part of the city, the Skytrain is a fast, cheap way to travel from the river to the shopping malls and nightlife of Sukhumvit and the famous Chatuchak street market.
    Where to eat
The simple answer is: everywhere! Thai street food is among the best in the world, and for around $5 you can eat a filling and delicious meal. Some food stands have little plastic seats where you can sit and eat and they cook the same dish over and over, like fried chicken on rice or Pad Thai noodles. Head for Chinatown --- Yaowarat Street --- and choose whatever looks most interesting from the many excellent Chinese and Thai restaurants and food stands.
    21. Where do local Thai people often go?
    A. Khao San Road. B. Phra Kanong. C. Chao Phraya. D. Grand Palace.
    22. Taking______ is a faster way to see the modern part of Bangkok.
    A. a taxi. B. a bus. C. a boat. D. the Skytrain.
    23. Which of the following is true according to the text?
    A. One night is enough time to see Bangkok.
    B. Khao San Road is an authentic Thai area of the city.
    C. Phra Kanong is further away from the main tourist sites than Khao San Road is.
    D. You need to choose where to eat carefully, as not everywhere is good.

    B
After thirty-two hours on hard seats in the train through the Georgia woods, Hattie was alarmed from a light sleep by the train conductor’s yell, “Broad Street Station, Philadelphia!”. Hattie climbed from the train, her skirt still dotted with Georgia mud, the dream of Philadelphia round as a marble in her mouth and the fear of it a needle in her chest.
Hattie and her mother and sisters climbed the steps from the train platform up into the main hall of the station. The round-shaped roof arched. Pigeons cooed in the rafters(椽子). Hattie was only fifteen then, slim as a finger. They stood at the crowd’s edge, waiting for a break in the flow of people. Hattie stepped into the crowd. Mama called, “Come back! You’ll be lost!”. But the crowd was too thick for her to turn back, and she was pushed out onto a long sidewalk .
The outside street was crowded with more people than Hattie had ever seen in one place. A flower vendor’s(摊贩) cart caught her eye. A Negro woman approached and indicated a bunch of flowers. The white vendor took the flowers from a bucket and before wrapping them in paper, he shook the water gently from the stems. As the woman handed the money, she upset three of the flower arrangements, which caused vases and blossoms to crash on the pavement. Hattie was frightened, waiting for the unavoidable explosion. Unexpectedly, the vendor bent down to pick up the mess. The Negro woman gestured apologetically and reached into her purse again to pay for what she’d damaged. In a couple of minutes it was all settled, and the woman walked on down the street with her nose in the flowers, as if nothing had happened.
Hattie looked more closely at the crowd on the sidewalk. Four Negro girls walked by, teenagers like Hattie, chatting to one another in the way only white girls walked and talked in the city streets of Georgia. At last, her mother and sisters exited the station and stood next to her.
“Mama,” Hattie said. “I’ll never go back, never. ”
    24. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
    A. Hattie has deep attachment to Georgia.
    B. The travel is costly and inconvenient.
    C. Passengers are greatly motivated and excited.
    D. Hattie has mixed feelings about the move to Philadelphia.
    25. What is the main purpose of the underlined sentences in paragraph 2?
    A. to show that Hattie has much to learn.
    B. to indicate that Hattie prefers to be outdoors.
    C. to emphasize how vast the station seems to Hattie.
    D. to suggest that the city has many opportunities for Hattie.
    26. What does Hattie’s reaction to the incident with the overturned flowers mainly reveal?
    A. the extraordinary generosity of people in Philadelphia.
    B. the small population of the town where she grew up.
    C. the types of jobs she held when living in Georgia.
    D. the negative experiences she had in the past.
    27. Which of the following sentences best states a theme of the passage?
    A. Hard work can lead to success.
    B. There can be hope when it is least expected.
    C. The presence of a large group can offer security.
    D. It can be important to find support during times of great challenge.

    C
Like many of the arts, music flourished during the Zhou dynasty. From this period we have instruments, models of performers, descriptions of musicians and dancers, and the Shijing, or The Book of Poetry, which contains poems and songs of court and common people during the Zhou dynasty. It is likely that music played an extremely important role in the Zhou dynasty for all social classes.
One of the most important sources of information the researchers have regarding Zhou-dynasty music is from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zeng (433 B.C.E.). This tomb was uncovered in 1977 in Hubei Province and contained the most extensive and well-preserved set of musical instruments ever found in an ancient Chinese tomb. This four-chamber(室) tomb was designed in imitation of a palace with a central courtyard, reflecting the belief that the Marquis Yi would require the same comforts in the afterlife that he had enjoyed during his lifetime. The central chamber of the tomb, which mirrored a palace courtyard, contained most of the musical instruments found, including a complete set of sixty-five graduated bells fixed on wooden shelves. In addition, twenty-one young women were buried with the Marquis Yi, some of whom were likely his favorite musicians and dancers.
The Marquis Yi’s set of sixty-five bells is remarkable for a variety of reasons. First, they are clearly dated—an inscription(碑文) indicates that the bells were a gift given to him in 433 B.C.E.. Second, the bells were very expensive to produce and to purchase, particularly a set of this size, so they are further evidence of the Marquis Yi’s status. Finally, the bells, along with the other instruments in the room, illustrate what an instrumental band might have consisted of during this period. Scholars predict that it would have required twenty-four musicians to play all instruments at once.
There are still many gaps in our knowledge of ancient Chinese music, partly because there was no system for recording music in a written form.
    28. The Book of Poetry is mentioned in paragraph 1 to _______.
    A. show the significance of the book.
    B. describe the meaning of the book.
    C. represent the life of people in the Zhou dynasty.
    D. show the popularity of music in the Zhou dynasty.
    29. According to the passage, what can we know about the tomb?
    A. It contains a complete set of musical instruments.
    B. It is designed by the Marquis Yi of Zeng.
    C. It is of the same size as that of the palace.
    D. It reflects the wish of the Marquis Yi for his life after death.
    30. Why is the set of sixty-five bells extraordinary?
    A. Because it once was an expensive gift.
    B. Because it was difficult to buy at that time.
    C. Because it might prove the Marquis Yi’s position.
    D. Because it needs twenty-four performers to play at the same time.
    31. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. A look into the Zhou-dynasty Music. B. An Invaluable Tomb.
    C. Ancient Musical Instruments. D. The Importance of Ancient Music.

    D
‘Instead of corona virus, the hunger will kill us.’ A global food crisis appears.
In the largest slum(贫民窟) in Kenya's capital, people desperate to eat cause chaos during a recent giveaway of flour and cooking oil, leaving scores injured and two people dead.
In India, thousands of workers are lining up twice a day for bread and fried vegetables to keep hunger away.
The corona virus pandemic has brought hunger to millions of people around the world. An estimated 265 million people could be pushed to the edge of starvation by year's end. "We've never seen anything like this before," said Arif Husain, chief economist at the World Food Program, a U.N. agency. "It wasn't a pretty picture to begin with, and this makes it probably worse."
The world has experienced severe hunger crises before, but those were regional and caused by one factor or another — extreme weather, economic downturns, wars or political instability. This hunger crisis, experts say, is global and caused by a variety of factors linked to the corona virus pandemic and the following interruption of the economic order.
There is no shortage of food globally, or mass starvation from the pandemic — yet. But problems in planting, harvesting and transporting food will leave poor countries exposed in the coming months, especially those dependent on imports, said Johan Swinnen, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington.
To lessen the impact of this crisis, some governments are fixing prices on food items, delivering free food and carrying out plans to send money transfers to the poorest households. Yet, communities across the world are also taking matters into their own hands. Some are raising money through crowdfunding platforms, while others have begun programs to purchase meals for needy families.
    32. What can we know from the scenes of people getting food in Kenya and India?
    A. Food shortage is becoming increasingly severe.
    B. People in Kenya and India are rude and mean.
    C. Food shortage causes people to go on strike.
    D. People are afraid of being infected by corona virus.
    33. What is Arif Husain’s attitude to the starvation caused recently?
    A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Pessimistic.
    34. Why is this hunger crisis different from the previous hunger crises?
    A. It is global and caused by various factors.
    B. It has caused mass starvation regionally.
    C. It is caused by natural disasters.
    D. It is caused by the economic disorder.
    35. Which of the following measures is taken by the governments for this hunger crisis?
    A. Raising money. B. Buying meals.
    C. Giving out free food. D. Setting prices on goods.

    第四节 书面表达(满分25分)
    Dear Eric,
Hearing that you feel depressed because of corona virus pandemic, I am writing to offer some suggestions. Here are the details.
To begin with, I think it necessary to hold a positive attitude towards the pandemic. Only if everyone supports the measures taken by our government can we eventually succeed in dealing with the situation. What’s more, you are supposed to take regular exercise and have a balanced diet, which can build up your body and protect you from diseases. Most importantly, it’s suggested that you should carry on with your study as planned in spite of the problems you have to face. Just as Emerson says, do the thing and you will have the power.
I hope that my suggestions are of great help to you and your life will be back to normal soon.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
