Israeli company Watergen has produced an appliance that generates clean, drinkable water out of air. The device called GENNY is small enough to be used in a home or office but can generate up to 30 liters of water a day.
The water that GENNY produces is not only clean enough to drink, it's also often cleaner than tap water.
GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air then passes through a chamber where heating and cooling cause water vapor in the air to condense (凝结). This water is then passed through several more filters and minerals are added to make it healthier and taste better. Finally, the water is stored in a tank where it is continually circulated to keep it fresh.
A larger model, called the GEN-350, can produce up to 900 liters of water per day. The GEN-350 is now being used in hospitals that previously did not have a reliable source of fresh, clean water. Watergen has also developed an emergency response vehicle (ERV) that can carry a GEN-350 unit wherever it is needed. In addition to the GEN-350, the ERV carries a portable generator that supplies electricity for the GEN-350.
Watergen's ERV is designed to bring water to people who are suffering from the effects of a serious earthquake, fire, flood or other situation. Once such incident occurred in Northern California in 2018. A fire started at a camp site and spread quickly over a wide area, destroying many thousands of acres of trees and many homes. The town of Paradise, California, was hit particularly hard. One of Watergen's ERVs was driven to Paradise, where it provided water for its citizens and rescue workers.

Have you ever tried an escape room? I first experienced one in Montana, U.S.A. with my wife, Pauline. We went to one to celebrate her father's birthday. Her entire family loves games and puzzles, so trying an escape room was a perfect activity for us. The room's theme was "the missing scientist." We played the role of investigating detectives. We entered the room and discovered we were "trapped." We then had only 60 minutes to escape before the room "exploded."
We had to search every corner of the room for clues in order to get out. As we did, we solved simple calculations, unscrambled codes and found keys to secret boxes. Getting one clue involved running balls through a maze. That took some skill! Together we solved every puzzle and escaped with just a few minutes to spare.
Pauline and I now live in Taipei. We tried our first escape room here over a year ago. It was such an amazing experience that we did two more almost immediately afterward. We have become completely hooked on Taipei's escape rooms.
Escape rooms in Taipei are well designed. Inside one, you feel as if you had just stepped into a story. It could be a thriller, a legend or something from sci-fi. Tricks and technology complete the illusion created by the room's theme. And there's always a variety of engaging puzzles.
Different companies offer a number of rooms to try. Some are suitable for just a few friends while others are big and require a large group of people to solve. But be warned: Some escape rooms are extraordinary because they are intense. We learned that the hard way when we invited a large group of friends to one. Some of them had never tried an escape room before. They were a little nervous, but we assured them that escape rooms are relaxing and fun. "They aren't scary or too high pressure," we said. Well, we were wrong. It turns out some are a bit over the top, but we enjoyed that, too! There is nothing like the feeling of solving problems as a team.
60. What was the purpose of the writer and his wife entering the room in Montana for the first
time?
A. To take part in an activity. B. To investigate a case of a missing scientist.
C. To prove their ability. D. To celebrate his father-in-law's birthday.
61. Specifically, how many times had the writer and his wife experienced escape rooms mentioned
in the passage?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
62. What does the word "They" in bold in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. The writer's friends. B. The companies.
C. Escape rooms. D. The problems.

Learning more efficiently is a matter of time, but not in the way you might think. According to Hermann Ebbinghaus, the pioneer of quantitative memory research, you may have a new perspective about it.
The findings
Ebbinghaus is best known for two major findings: the forgetting curve and the learning curve.
The forgetting curve describes how new information fades away. Once you've "learned" something new, the fastest drop occurs in just 20 minutes; after a day, the curve levels off.
Within minutes, nearly half of what you've "learned" has disappeared.
Or not.
According to Benedict Carey, author of How We Learn, what we learn doesn't necessarily fade; it just becomes less accessible.
In my case, I hadn't forgotten a key point. I just didn't access that information when I needed it.
Working with our memory
Ebbinghaus would have agreed with Carey: He determined that even when we think we've forgotten something, some portion of what we learned is still filed away, which makes the process of relearning a lot more efficient.
As Ebbinghaus writes:
Suppose that a poem is relearned by heart. It then becomes evident that, although it seems totally forgotten, it still in a certain sense exists. The second learning requires noticeably less time or noticeably smaller number of repetitions than the first.
That, in a nutshell, is the power of spaced repetition.
The condition is simple. Learn something new, and within a short period of time you'll forget much of it. Repeat a learning session a day later, and you'll remember more. Repeat a session two days after that. and you'll remember even more. The key is to steadily increase the time intervals between relearning sessions.
And forgive yourself for forgetting. Accept that forgetting is actually a key to the process.
Why?
Forgetting is an essential part of learning. Relearning strengthens earlier memories. Relearning creates different context and connections. According to Carey, " 'Some breakdown' must occur for us to strengthen learning when we revisit the material. Without a little forgetting, you get no benefit from further study. It is what allows learning to build, like an exercised muscle."
The process of retrieving a memory - especially when you fail - strengthens access. That's why the best way to study isn't to reread; the best way to study is to quiz yourself. If you test yourself and answer incorrectly, not only are you more likely to remember the right answer after you look it up, you' ll also remember that you didn't remember.
Forgetting, and therefore repeating information, makes your brain assign that information greater importance.
63. According to Ebbinghaus' chart, we conclude that ______.
A. the best time to avoid forgetting is the sixth day after learning
B. we usually forget most of what we've learned on the sixth day
C. forgetting really exists almost in the whole process of learning
D. what has been learned will be forgotten completely in any case
64. Why does the writer say, "Forgetting is actually a key to the process."?
A. Because forgetting itself is one of the steps in our learning.
B. Because forgetting can help us benefit from further learning.
C. Because relearning can create new context and materials for us.
D. Because learning memory is just like muscle memory in exercise.
65. What does the word "retrieve" in the last paragraph but one most probably mean?
A. To reappear in the place. B. To consolidate something in time.
C. To memorize something firmly. D. To find and bring back something.
66. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Forget More with Less Repetition B. Learn More with Less Effort
C. Two Amazing Curves in Learning D. Two Different Findings in Forgetting
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
A. But street performers often help each other out
B. And on a good day, artists can earn a good amount of money
C. Their purpose of performing is to make themselves known to others
D. Most, however, leave a hat or an instrument case out for tips
E. This will make the show more enjoyable for them and for you
F. In this way, they're likely to be mature more quickly
On streets all around the world today, people are performing. Musicians sing or play instruments while other people may juggle (玩杂耍), dance or mime. Some perform as living statues, standing perfectly still in costumes and makeup designed to make them look like statues. Artists perform out in the open, allowing people to enjoy their art for free. 67 .
For up-and-coming artists, busking (街头卖艺), or street performance, is a great way to spread awareness of their talent. They may leave business cards out when they perform or sell CDs. Busking is also a way to practice playing in front of a crowd. 68 .
It's important for street performers to think carefully about where they'll perform. Obviously, places with more people mean they can earn more money. A covered spot will keep the performers comfortable, out of the sun and the rain, But they need to avoid blocking shop entrances. And in some cities, certain artists have places where they typically perform. New performers should respect them and wait until they're done to set up there. 69 , telling each other when they'll finish up or even saving each other places.
If you're a musician and want to busk, have a variety of songs ready. This is especially important if you're performing in front of a shop or a seating area. Playing the same three songs over and over will get annoying really quickly. One performer recommends having at least an hour's worth of music prepared.
Finally, have fun. Remember to look up, smile and interact with your audience wherever you are. 70 .
IV. Summary Writing
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Hanks, wining the Golden Globe Cecil B. deMille Award which is for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment", shared a story of when he worked in his first professional job as an intern at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival. Hanks said he and his fellow interns showed up to rehearsals after doing a little too much partying the previous night. The director wasn't having it.
"He screamed at us," said Hanks. "You know what your job is?" the director asked. "You have got to show up on time, and you have to know the text, and you have to have a head full of ideas. Otherwise I can't do my job."
And there it is, a simple, brilliant, three-step formula for success:
Show up on time, know the text and have a head full of ideas.
Show up on time
"Showing up on time is one of the greatest liberating acts you can give yourself in a movie. You have the freedom of being there early enough to settle down - because when the time comes, you have to hit the marks, " explains Hanks.
Know the text
"Knowing your text - it's not just your lines, it's the whole thing," Hanks continued. "You might not be right in the opinion you bring to it. But you've got to come at it with some direction."
In a word, Hanks is speaking here about preparation. Generally speaking, the more prepared you are, the more successful you'll be.
Think about it - professional athletes, creatives even analysts, it's not the smartest or most talented person in the room who's the most successful.
It's the one who comes most prepared.
Have a head full of ideas
Speaking to this final point, Hanks said the following:
"Bring anything. Try anything. They might not use it. If it is not fit, they won't use it. "
The best companies are successful because their employees are constantly seeking to try new things to grow and improve.
Routines and processes are helpful, but growth doesn't happen when you always do things the exact same way. Growth is a result of being willing to take risks, to break out of your comfort zone and to embrace failure when it happens.
Because out of failure comes learning. And out of learning comes growth.

40 percent of people who bought natural trees last year chose them at tree farms and cut the trees themselves. Real trees are better for the environment because as trees grow, they collect carbon dioxide and other gases while supplying fresh oxygen. The trees also protect water supplies.
Many people throw away their natural trees when the holiday season ends. But some people recycle them. There are many ways to do this. Artificial trees which come mostly from China can be reused for years. Families use them for an average of six to nine years before throwing them away. These trees can remain in a landfill for hundreds of years.
Now listen again, please.

Terry: What are you going to do after final exams, Leah?
Leah: I expect I'll be working. I'm looking for a summer job that pays well. How about you?
Terry: I'll be too busy to work. I'm taking a couple of language courses this summer.
Leah: Well, I'm taking a math course in the evening. But that won't stop me from getting a job.
Terry: Don't you want to have a good rest before your senior year?
Leah: I’d love to, but I can't afford it. If I can't save money from my summer job, I won't be able to attend university after high school
Terry: Why? Won't your parents help with your university expenses?
Leah: They'll contribute, of course. But they told me they wouldn't pay for everything.
Terry: Why not? They make an adequate amount of money, don't they?
Leah: Yes, but they said I should learn to pay my own way.
Terry: They're right, I guess. And if you focus on your studies, you'll be able to do that!
Leah: They also say a summer job provides more than just money.
Terry: Like what?
Leah: Like work experience and the chance to develop important skills.
Terry: Important skills? Making hamburgers or cutting grass?
