Iraqi women are working as engineers in Iraq's oil industry, an important source of income for the government to help develop their country's economy.
Amjad is a 24-year-old engineer who works on an oil rig for six weeks at a time. She said: "They tell me the field environment only men can withstand, if I gave up, I'd prove them right." Rawthan, also a 24-year-old engineer, is working in another oil rig in Basra where she supervises a team that prepares large drill pipes to collect information about rock formations. Most women who are petroleum engineers in Iraq work in an office. Instead, Amjad and Rawthan chose to work in the oil fields. These are not usual jobs for women from conservative communities. Petrochemical programs in the country's engineering schools are for students with the best grades. Both women were in the top 5 percent of their graduating class at Basra University in 2018.They are part of a new generation of Iraqi women who are going against tribal traditions.
"Many times my professors laughed, 'Sure, we'll see you out there,' telling me I wouldn't be able to make it," said Rawthan. "But this only pushed me harder." She hopes to help establish a labor rights group for Iraqi female engineers in the future. Rawthan, too, knew she would have to work extra hard to succeed. Once, when her team had to perform a difficult task, she stayed awake all night.
As for Amjad, to gain experience, she once worked for international oil companies, first in China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation and later the U. S. -based Schlumberger company as an engineer. She passed one difficult test after another. Asked if she was sure she could do the job, she said: "Hire me, watch."
Not only have Amjad and Rawthan faced inequality within the industry, they also face ongoing protests by local tribes and violence toward oil workers. But the two women are willing to take on difficulties, such as state corruption, poor services and high unemployment. They have little time to even consider these difficulties, for even at night they're often working.
    24. What do you know from paragraph 2?
    A. Amjad and Rawthan are of the same age in the same oil rig.
    B. Amjad and Rawthan both had excellent academic performance at school.
    C. No women have worked in the oil rigs before in Iraq.
    D. women engineers are treated equally as men in Iraq's oil industry.
    25. What do professors believe according to the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?
    A. Rawthan can't manage to do the tough work in the oil rig.
    B. Only man can do the work in oil rigs.
    C. Rawthan should give up the work in the oil rig.
    D. Rawthan must work extra hard to succeed in the work of the oil field.
    26. Which of the following best describesAmjad and Rawthan?
A kind and enthusiastic. B generous and considerate.
C honest and gentle. D Strong-willed and hard working.
    27. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To show the inequality in oil industry in Iraq.
    B. To Praise the two women engineers contributed to the country.
    C. To call on more women to work in Iraq's oil fields.
    D. To criticize the men looking down upon women engineers in the oil industry in Iraq.

Japan plans to release into the sea more than a million tonnes of radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear station, it said on Tuesday. Plant operator Tepco will begin pumping out water in about two years after treatment in a process that will take decades to complete.
Tepco has been struggling with the build-up of polluted water since bringing three reactors under control after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami knocked out electricity and cooling.
Efforts to tackle the problem have included building an "ice wall" around the damaged reactors and wells to draw groundwater away before it reaches the reactors. These measures have slowed, but not halted(停止)the build-up of polluted water. In 2018, Tepco admitted it had not filtered all dangerous materials out of the water, despite saying for years they had been removed.
Tepco plans to filter the polluted water again, leaving only tritium, a radioactive isotope(同位素)of hydrogen hard to separate from water. When ingested(摄入), it can raise cancer risks, a Scientific American article said in 2014.
Environmental groups, including Greenpeace, say the government should build more tanks to hold the water outside the plant instead of choosing the cheaper option of ocean release.
Neighbouring countries have also expressed concern. A foreign ministry spokesman in South Korea, which maintains restrictions on Japanese produce, said it "expresses serious concerns that the decision could bring a direct and indirect impact on the safety of our people and surrounding environment."
In China, a foreign ministry spokesman in October urged Japan to act with a "high sense of responsibility towards its own people, neighbouring countries and the international community". He adds that, "The radioactive leak caused by the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant has had profound impact on marine environment, food safety and human health. The Japanese government should conduct thorough assessment of the possible effect of treatment process for tritium-contaminated waste water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, disclose relevant information in a voluntary, timely, strict, accurate, open and transparent manner, and make cautious decisions after full consultation with neighboring countries."
    28. What has Tepco done to deal with the radioactive water?
    A. Releasing it into the ocean after a 2011 earthquake.
    B. Building a frozen wall to process contaminated water.
    C. Digging wells to prevent groundwater from reaching the reactors
    D. Removing all dangerous materials out of the water
    29. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 5 refer to?
    A. isotope B. tritium C. hydrogen D. tsunami
    30. What should be the best way to solve the problem according to some environmental groups?
    A. Bringing three reactors under control. B. Prolonging the period of release.
    C. Building more tanks to hold the water. D. Choosing the cheaper option of ocean release.
    31. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
    A. The attiude of the neighboring countries towards Japan's plan.
    B. The impact of Japan's decision on the world environment.
    C. The responsibility of Japanese government towards its people.
    D. The international cooperation to treat the tritium-contaminated waste water.
    D
QR codes, also known as 2D bar codes, are black and white graphs with a specific geometric figure distributed in the plane according to a certain rule to record the symbolic information of data. They have developed into one of the most popular encoding methods on mobile devices in recent years because they can store more information than the traditional bar code.
According to a report from People's Daily Online, China accounts for more than 90 percent of the world's QR code applications, while foreign countries only 10 percent. However, recently they have been stuck across pub bars and restaurant tables seemingly overnight. QR codes have made a triumphant comeback in post-lockdown Britain as businesses attempt to come up with ways to interact with customers at a distance. But why has this decades-old technology become such a vital part of the UK's recovery?
First invented in Japan by Masahiro Hara to track vehicle parts, QR codes evolved in the 2000s to be used alongside smartphones to scan real-world objects. But the codes were slow to take off.
QR codes are now being used as part of many Test and Trace set-ups in pubs and restaurants. Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight, says: "There is little doubt that QR codes are having a renaissance(复兴)as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The desire to abate infection risk is making the technology a much more commonplace occurrence.
While they are only just taking off in the West, QR codes have already started seeing success in payments in Asia. In China, QR codes have been hugely popular for years. Amid the coronavirus crisis, QR codes are being used in China as a way to verify people travelling.
It took social media companies, such as Snapchat, to reintroduce QR codes to millennial and Gen Z to promote their popularity in the West. QR codes have been given a further boost as they become easier to use.
"The difference is that now there is a huge motivation to use them," says Prask Sutton, chief executive of Wi5, which provides payments services including QR payments. "Scan this QR code for more information", was a "nice to have". Now, they are even necessary to order a coffee."
    32. Why does QR codes return successfully in Britain?
    A. Because Britain was locked down for a long time.
    B. Because Britain wants to check people traveling.
    C. Because Britain desires to do business without contacting consumers.
    D. Because QR codes are used to track components of vehicles.
    33. Which was the initial function of QR Code?
    A. Mobile payment B. Trace ability
    C. Information acquisition D. Advertising push
    34. What does the underline word "abate" in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. minimize B. fade C. increase D. improve
    35. Which word best describes the author's attitude to the future of QR codes in the west?
    A. Confident B. Worried C. Skeptical D. Conservative

Richard was very spoilt and completely self-centered. His parents gave him everything he wanted, knowing that he would throw a temper tantrum(耍小孩脾气)if they did not, he would scream and kick and lie on the floor drumming his heels. His parents always gave in, and they gave him unlimited allowance to meet his requirements, making him into a little "prince".
It was a usual day. Richard and his parents went to the beach to spend their holiday. On their way to the seaside· they passed a store where Richard noticed a cool swimsuit, and he was fond of it, insisting on buying it, regardless of its high price. His parents tried to persuade him not to, but in vain. Finally, they had no choice but to satisfy him.
Later, they were back at the beach-house, recovering from another tantrum Richard had thrown when they told him that it was too dangerous to go diving alone. "Dangerous?" he shouted. "You just don't want me to have fun. Nothing can stop me!" His parents sighed, but they have no more energy to have another argument with him. That was why Richard was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit which has taken a massive tantrum to get his parents to buy it.
"What are you doing here, my boy?" a voice asked. Richard was surprised. He did not know that the man was there until he spoke. "I'm going diving." he answered, pointing at his swimsuit, "Haven't you noticed that?" "You shouldn't swim today!" the man advised. "There is a storm coming up. It is dangerous to swim here." "You should mind your own business!" Richard replied and walked into the gentle waves, "Look! The sea is so peaceful now!" "Listen to me, young man. you'll be sorry for your stubbornness!" the man called after him.
